He'd been gone almost 11 years and I didn't know until now.
He was a good guy, well liked, and a credit to his community.
Died in a small plane crash.

My high school class has a page on face book. It got to the point when I saw a notification in my email I stopped looking. I was in the hospital for 8 days earlier this year. A good friend from school that I hung around with went into hospice just as I got into the hospital, and was dead by the time I got out, and another from that group died 2 weeks later. We seem to lose a few every year. I have a reunion in 2 weeks. Part of me is not looking forward to that because they always have an absent friends list.

I discovered AOShq in early 2017. Up late one night with the paterfamilias, who had recently come to live with us. My son and I share a love for music. He is a talented musician. I can barely play the radio. I had been giving my son crap about metal music. He suggested I listen to a song by Moterhead called "Ace of Spades". I found this place instead. I'd have to agree. In about the 6th grade, the nuns had one of my classmate's father give us a talk. He was on the Bataan Death March. He was a former Marine with a bad back. Walking very straight and stiff, he explained the bad back was due to Japanese torture, without going into explicit detail -- but enough. A quiet bunch of kids that day. This was only 20 years after the war, same distance in time (unburdened or not) as from now back to 9/11.

Lame is such a nice word. My son used to retreat into his room when I had ticked him off, plug in his guitar, and serenade us with Megadeath. Always ended up with me pounding on his door and telling him to turn that damn thing down. Every time I swore I could hear my father. Motorhead in general seems kinda lame. My son and I connected on a lot of different types of music. Metal was not one of them. Fortunately, he spent more time playing the classics on piano. I enjoyed that.

Sad but true. Korea was the Forgotten War and those guys are still Forgotten. Another sad but true. Dad, WWII and Korea 22-year vet, died in 2004. So yeah, Korea's the next group of vets from one of our miserable wars after 1945 to pass. WWII vets are passing pretty much without a whimper; i don't think there's many left since it's 80 years back to just the end of the war, 98 being 18 in '45. No one hails them on their way out. It just pisses me off. And I never served. But I do appreciate the bikers who form corteges just because.

Avanti with a Brand X power train. (Chevy 283, and turbo 350 transmission) The starter was giving trouble; it would start cranking slow, and then slowly come up to speed, and the engine would start. Until a couple of days ago, when it didn't. Needed a boost to start up. And the battery is fully charged and in A-1 shape.
So, I put it on the hoist this afternoon, took the starter out. It was a mini gear reduction starter, made by Dixie Electric, and was all soaked with oil. Found another starter that came out of a '98 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 350. Another Dixie Electric starter, same part number! Cleaned it up, put it in the car, and it starts like a brand new car. Guess I will try to get an overhaul kit for the bad one. Acts like the armature is dragging the field poles.

I grew up a little south of you, Nawfuck. My freshman roommate at Va Tech was from NOVA, Alexandria IIRC. Had family in Springfield and still have in Silver Spring. I remember when that area blew up. My earliest memories of visiting Springfield (not too far away from the stop on the train line) are from around 1961 or so. I remember some tall buildings but pretty wide open spaces. Even into the '70s when I was driving, it wasn't too bad but getting there. The last time driving there was like '90, and that was passing around on the Beltway toward western Maryland/Gettysburg.

These gear-reduction mini-starters are the shiznit. Half the weight and bulk of the old direct-drive jobs, and they have more torque. Particularly useful in cramped spaces. Standard on most late-model vehicles, now, but will retro-fit many older cars and trucks. Somebody probably makes one for a Model T.

My Dixon mower does that sometimes. It is a flaky plug on the back of the ignition switch. Reach under the cowling, tug on the wire, and it fires up.

That is a thought! On my Dixon mowers, that switch is only active if the blade clutch is in gear. You can leave the seat if the engine is running with the blades stopped. But not all are necessarily wired that way.

It was a reinforced concrete barricade with anti-climbing tubes along the top, fronted by a series of ditches, cowtrops, explosives, barbed wire, sentry towers, and heavily armed cops.
It's tough to tear something like that up. But it's real easy to set up the first run of fence and barbed wire and shock everyone into the submission you need to build the rest of that evil shit.

Well, if the blade clutch is mechanical, worked by a lever, the seat switch would more or less have to be independent of it. The Dixons used an electromagnetic clutch for the deck drive, very similar to the clutch on an automobile A/C compressor. An expensive part, if one must replace it.

The "safety features" on these riding lawn mowers are getting ridiculous. It's all about "marginal" improvement in safety. At some point, the extra cost in terms of money and actual usability greatly exceed the marginal improvement in safety.
My latest has a anti-reverse behavior by default. If the blade is engaged, backing up will kill the engine. But they realized that would be unusable, so the ignition switch has a "backup" override position, allowing you tor reverse.
That's your government at work.

I can't stress how impressive the Raptor engine is. It's a full-flow staged combustion (gas-gas) engine.
The Raptor is the only such engine that has every flown. There have been other attempts that have reached the static test firing, but Space Daddy's is the first to actually fly.
Full flow staged combustion is hard. Very efficient, but hard to do.

The F1 engine on the Saturn V 1st stage (S-IC) was only 55,000 HP.
That was an inefficient "open cycle" gas generator. You diverted a little fuel and oxidizer to run a fuel rich combustion which drove a turbine which drove the LOX and kerosene fuel pumps.
This was wasteful, as that didn't add to the thrust.

If you're wondering why I'm so impressed with Space Daddy's full flow stage combustion Raptors, here's the gist:
With such a liquid fueled rocket, you've got this. You have cryogenic fuel and oxidizer in tanks. Your "turbopumps" pump that liquid into the combustion chamber at some god-awful rate, burn them, and produce the massive thrust required to send a payload into orbit and beyond.
I mean, it's a ridiculous rate, and you do that without blowing up into smithereenies.
Now, Space Daddy's raptors do this as follows. The fuel pump is a fuel rich gas generator. You squirt a little oxidizer into the main fuel flow, burn it, and dump the output into the main chamber.
On the oxidizer (LOX) side, you squirt a little fuel into that flow, burn that, and dump the output into the chamber.

Now, the oxidizer rich side of that is impressive, a little fuel into the main oxidizer flow. That's hard to do. Very corrosive, etc.
So, what this full flow design does is take the god-awful flow of fuel and LOX, and completely "gasify" (I hate that word, but that's what they call it). So some god-awful mass flow rate of liquid propellants gets fully gassified and dumped into the combustion chamber, at ridiculous pressures.
This makes for very efficient rocket engines. Big thrust per input, very little wasted.
But's also very hard to do without blowing the whole thing to smithereenies. Space Daddy has done it.

Another thing about the Raptor. It uses "deep cooled" or subcooled cyro propellants. Rather than, as normal, you have LOX and the fuel at about their boiling point, you cool them down further to nearly their freezing point.
The LOX and methane go in the tanks at near their freezing points. This makes for greater density. Doing this adds to the complexity and difficulty, but makes things even more efficient.
The Raptor is a damned impressive engine.
