118 Blind; not mentally retarded [presumably]...

The painting depicts an impoverished blind beggar singing in the street to the music of his hurdy-gurdy, an instrument traditionally associated with street singers. The hurdy-gurdy, portrayed in great detail in de la Tour's canvas, works by means of a hand turned wheel rubbing against a set of strings, whose pitch can be adjusted by hand operated wedges.

The beggar's distorted face and worn clothing are designed to invoke sympathy in the viewer for his situation. The existence of a fly on the singer's doublet (above his right knee) gives the work its alternative name and, in its proximity to such a beautiful instrument, can be interpreted as a comment on the fragility of life.

149 Museo Del Prado, La Tour, Georges de
Vic-sur-Seille, 1593

In part, The blind man appears in profile playing his hurdy-gurdy, a stringed instrument with which he earns his living. Despite his miserable state, La Tour depicts him with considerable dignity, dressed in a cape that hides a chestnut vest and salmon-colored trousers. His face shows the mark of time, with tanned skin, deep wrinkles and an unkempt beard. His strong hands seem out of place for a musician but may recall the work he did before losing his sight. Amidst all of this roughness, the artist surprises us with a delicate yellow ribbon wound around the lower part of the instrument to bind the top of the wheel moved by the crank in his right hand. The space in the background is divided into three sections by clearly delineated oblique lines. The left section is practically black and is precisely the part that brings out the musician’s face, sharply silhouetting his features and reinforcing his solitude. The close physical resemblances between all of the beggar musicians painted by La Tour, as well as the one in the Musicians’ Brawl in Los Angeles, suggest that the artist drew repeatedly on a model over a long period.

160 The subject of the blind man is unattractive but the painting is brilliant. de la Tour often uses subtle candle light in his paintings but this one is brighter, nothing subtle to hide the man's plight or situation. His group paintings show very different expressions for each character. There is a feel of Rembrandt to me or what would become Rembrandt's style at a later period: individual characters, effective use of lighting and realistic situations. The "Night Watch" comes to mind.

I wonder if Heinlein had this in mind when he created the character of the blind accordion player in The Green Hills of Earth and referred to in a later book.

196 When I 1st glanced the painting, strong No for hanging. But upon looking at it in more detail, and a bit of reading about the artist and such subjects, it could be a possibility if there was hanging space. It's a very well done painting and might show the artist's compassion for such subjects.

Thanks.

These bribes were allegedly paid to obtain and retain business related to providing voting machines and election services for the 2016 Philippine elections and to secure payments on the contracts, including the release of value added tax payments.

I haven't read the story in a while, and my first acquaintance with it was long long ago. I presumed it was a guitar of some kind he was talking about.

According to RAH's biographer, he worked hard on the story, planning all the time to submit it to the Post. The lyrics of Rhysling's songs were the toughest part for him. They come off really well, though.

253 Trump holding a rally in MT (to help in the Senate race) is remarkable. He will win the state by double digits but he's using valuable time remaining in the campaign to make a stop there.

So either he's an idiot, or he's looking at data and believes (right now at least) that the race is over and he's now trying to generate a mandate.

I assume he'll go to Nevada again soon, that'll help him and the Senate candidate there, but let's see if he goes to Ohio (a Trump state similar to MT) or New Mexico (presumably a Kalama state) to help with those races

I don't think the officers kicked it away from the shooter although we'd need ALL the bodycam footage to determine that.

Youngkin Goes After Illegal Immigrants Trying to Vote
https://tinyurl.com/3uzvs2rv

Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order Wednesday implementing additional voter integrity measures ahead of the 2024 presidential election, including stronger protections to keep illegal immigrants from registering to vote and eventually casting ballots...
“We use 100% paper ballots with a strict chain of custody. We use counting machines, not voting machines, that are tested prior to every election and never connected to the internet. We do not mass mail ballots. We monitor our drop boxes 24/7. We verify the legal presence and identity of voters using DMV data and other trusted data sources to update our voter rolls daily, not only adding new voters, but scrubbing the lists to remove those that should not be on it, like the deceased, individuals that have moved, and non-citizens that have accidentally or maliciously attempted to register,” he continued.

Two powerful earthquakes hit off Japan: USGS
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook southern Japan on Thursday but no major damage was reported and only relatively minor tsunami waves lashed the coast.

The quake hit at 4:42 pm (0742 GMT) off the southern island of Kyushu at a depth of 25 kilometres (16 miles), the United States Geological Survey said.

The USGS had initially reported two strong quakes, with magnitudes of 6.9 and 7.1, but later said there had only been one tremor.

I use a disposal and an old sink in the back yard to grind up apples to make cider. the bottleneck now is processing the jars of juice and chopping the apples into quarters so they don't bog down the grinder and cause it to trip its breaker. It takes about ten to twenty minutes to run a bucket of apples through it

buy the biggest Horse power rating possible is all I say.
