Daily Tech News 5 August 2024

Top Story

  • Venture capitalists have flushed $1.6 billion down the drain trying to make lab-grown meat a reality. (Tech Crunch)

The most optimistic proponents are now hoping to someday capture 0.03% of the global meat market.

Farm grown meat is cheaper, tastes better, is readily available, and probably won't devour the world in a Gray Goo apocalypse.

Though the chickens might try. You can't trust 'em.

  • Please let me know if the blog is loading slow for you, and if it is, what kind of device and browser you are using. Several reports of this over the past 24 hours but it's hard to track down.

Tech News

  • How to run DOS on modern hardware. (Tom's Hardware)

The way the economy is going this might be useful information.

  • Adding RAM to an RP2040. (Dmitry)

This is the chip used in the Raspberry Pi Pico. It doesn't have a memory bus in the usual sense, but supports external serial (SPI) ROM and has an onboard cache to keep things fast.

You can also wire up SPI RAM - but it will be read-only because the RP2040 is expecting ROM, not RAM.

You can get around that, but it's, uh, interesting.

  • The Breville Oracle Jet is a $2000 computer that makes coffee. (The Verge)

    Okay.

  • KOSA - the Kids Online Safety Act - is dead. For now. (TechDirt)

I haven't linked TechDirt much lately since Mike Masnick went insane, but he seems to be having a lucid day. He praises the House GOP for killing the train wreck bipartisan Senate bill, and approvingly quotes Rand Paul's scathing letter.

  • Need for Speed: SSD Edition. (Serve the Home)

This is Kioxia's (formerly Toshiba) latest datacenter drive aimed at low latency rather than transfer rates. It's about twice as fast as typical SSDs - access times of around 25 microseconds vs. a more typical 50 microseconds.

It's intended to replace phase-change drives in heavy workloads, now that Intel and Micron have abandoned phase-change memory entirely.

Intel's Optane drives could get access times down to 10 microseconds, but they were power hungry and expensive, and ultimately not commercially successful.

3 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers! Yes, yes, 'tis Monday. But if you're on the right side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?

4 Good morning everyone.

Pixy,
The site has been loading slow though it's mostly the photos or pictures that are a problem. I'm using a new iPad Air.

Posted by: Tuna at August 05, 2024 04:19 AM (oaGWv)

5 Right after the Book Thread yesterday, I discovered I had a quarter inch of water in both my kitchen and bathroom floors. I had to spend most of an hour mopping, and damming the leaks from next door with towels once I found the entry points. This is right on schedule; I've had a leak like this nearly every 18 months since I've lived here.

The water has either ceased to flow, or the flow is so minimal that the towels are holding it back. (Obligatory: I am so sick of this place --!)

On top of that, I have to fast this morning, and no coffee either, in prep for a blood draw at the dr.'s office. I'll go exercise in a bit, which will take my mind off being hungry, and can have coffee and a microwave breakfast bowl when I get back to work.

6 Same here. Pics. Win 10, Brave browser, everything updated. Only noticed this as of about 5 hours ago after I woke up and turned on my Lenovo notebook.

7 Pixy, I thought the blog, maybe only the loading of pics and videos, was a little slow to refresh yesterday morning. I'm not seeing a problem now. I'm on a Mac Book Air, running the Brave browser.

12 Oh good. The Nasdaq's only going to open 650 points down. That's quite an improvement from nearly a thousand points a few hours earlier. I'm feeling all optimistic again. Maybe I'll go get that timeshare I've had my eye on for the last month.

56 CNET: Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro Review: Better Than the AirPods Pro 2

Articles like this are stupid. If you have an iPhone the chances of you buying something other than AirPods is vanishingly small.

And if you have an Android phone, what are the odds that you're even going to know what an Airpod sounds like? Not to mention airpods are probably crippled on an Android phone making them next to useless.

If this showed up in computer shopper it would have a headline like Even Bill Gates and Eddie Van Halen agree: Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro have turbolicious tweeters and and woofers so tasty your mom would serve them for breakfast.

We were at Target on Saturday to get the last of the baby items on our list (7 weeks out!) and wanted to buy a baby monitor. I don't want video, I don't want an ankle monitor that gives the baby's heartrate, and I certainly don't want something that's going to hog all my phone data and battery as it sends my baby's vitals to China. So, we decided on the $20 audio monitor, and it was double-locked to the shelf. The electronics guy was baffled, because Airpods are their most stolen item, and they aren't locked up at all. But an audio baby monitor is apparently the store's most valuable item, or something.

Deodorant sticks are easy to sell? A lot of people here do not seem to care about how they smell.

And no, no Cajun in me. I'm part Swedish, German, Ruthenian, and a little Irish. I've never felt that I belonged here in this swamp, and less and less so every day.

This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy and strengthening alliances. This is an incredible day.”

Last night's ONT wouldn't finish loading, ever. Never finished, somehow, loading comments of the week (that section was left blank, I thought at first it was a joke, which would be kind of funny), and never loaded the final pic in the thread.

119 Hi Pixy,

As to slow loading, mine is an extreme circumstance, but may be useful. I have a 2017 item iMac running OSX 10.14.6, 16GB RAM, Safari 13.1.2. I use an iPhone 14 as my internet connection. In the last couple of days this site has loaded very slowly, especially graphics, but today I have read the morning report and your column, am now writing this note, and the sidebars have yet to load. Good lock, and thanks for all the fish.

iPad mini4

I’ve been assuming it was some sort of thwarted ad load or privacy intrusion / blocked data collection.

Site works fine on multiple Win10 PCs and Win11 laptop, various browsers.

121 Locked up on Edge browser running on iPad. Can’t close, must shut down to get out last night. Today opened for about a minute without displaying, clicked stop loading and it showed what was loading. When I didn’t do this it would continue to load indefinitely while I viewed but would not scroll or haltingly.

Have been having trouble loading this site for years. It’s either very slow loading or it flat out crashes my stuff. I’ve been trying to tell you guys about this for years but it never gets any better.

I’m sure it’s hurting Ace’s eyeball count and this has always been my favorite blog but I can rarely access it.

Cheers and good luck
