IN RE: TP roll.
We have a cat. She longingly gazes at the rolls. We put them on "under," so that she continues to merely long for them, instead of unfurling the rolls throughout the house. A few years ago we had a family over fur supper, dad, mom, three kids in late teens, early 20's. The eldest has "anxiety." After supper, I excuse myself and use the toilet. The tp was reversed from the way we hang it. I just changed it back, but to this day I regret not sitting at the table and saying, " whoever changed the tp obviously had never had a cat, so go and put the roll the way you found it. " Alas, I am too polite. Posted by: Question Authority bumper sticker at August 05, 2024 10:05 PM (Rbu5d) 40

Lant Pritchett: "The way to secure the border is to create a legitimate way for people and firms to get the labor that the economy really needs in legitimate, legal ways, and until we have that, the whole debate over the wall and stuff is just silly."
Define "really needs". According to the US Chamber of Commerce, they "really need" endless, cheaper labor. And they need the US taxpayer to subsidize that labor via increasing taxes while lobbying for corporate tax relief. And what about criminals, drug trafficking, national security (terrorism)? How is a pathway to cheap labor going to stop those? Screw him and the research lab he rode in on. We're a sovereign nation, not a macroeconomic model of widgets. If William Wilberforce had taken the position that the way to abolish slavery was to create a way for people and firms to get the labor that the economy really needs in legitimate, legal ways, and until we have that, the whole debate over slavery is unresovlable, we would have barracoons and auction blocks in a network from Africa to Louisiana, Havana and to Sao Paulo. Human trafficking and human smuggling is slavery. Calling it mere economics is obscene.

Having in the previous thread announced the launch of my upcoming documentary Ace The Enshelfaning, a chronicle of the existential struggle of an Ewok with the despair of home improvement, I now compile the data necessary for the project. Those of you who know the blogger, does he use conditioner, or is he given to vaunting his furry carapace in scorn of hygiene? And if he does, would he go with something generic? We must save funds so that we can properly fit out one of you as Krampus, and also for song rights from Kraftwerk.
One further concern - craft union rules regarding food and drink are limiting. Given that, what would be a reasonable amount of hobos to assemble? Does he prefer to prepare them for his own consumption, or would he accept the tender ministrations of Linda, who has been in the industry for years and is no longer capable of being shocked? Is he rendered uneasy by Italian deserts? This I ask so that I may comment in my narration, Leave the Ewok, take the cannoli. New potassium-ion battery technology could soon replace lithium-ion
It holds great promise for electric vehicles ************* Didn't these people take an introductory course in chemistry? Potassium will burn nearly as strongly as lithium if exposed to oxygen. I guess it isn't quite as dangerous from a neurological view, though I'm not a doctor, so if this is true, then potassium would be a better choice than lithium, though I wouldn't want my vehicles to have these batteries in them. Ach, Werner meant to say "Italian desserts" rather than "Italian deserts." But upon consideration, Italian deserts is an interesting consideration. Would it be a reference to Abyssinia, or another area within the reaches of the Maghreb? Might we take it to apply to regions bereft of Italians? For that would be tragic, as a society bereft of Italians would be a depressing place.

Off on a bit of a tangent but crime is one of the top election issues. Recividism is high in the country because the Left always makes excuses for the wrong people and coddle them. Criminals continue to do crime because going back to prison ain't a deterrent.
Prisons should be work camps and run in a military manner. Prison sentences could even be shorter if we did it this way. Also prisons should separate prisoners by their crimes IMO. Posted by: polynikes at August 05, 2024 11:16 PM (B1dzx) 294
The way to secure the border is to create a legitimate way for people and firms to get the labor that the economy really needs in legitimate, legal ways, and until we have that, the whole debate over the wall and stuff is just silly
This is the opposite of the problem we face. The point of "people and firms", labor in general, is to benefit the citizens of that nation. Even if the open border was not bringing in crime, even if it was not bringing in socialist votes, we would still be obligated to close it. The point of a nation state, or at least the United States of America, is not to enrich the elites tied to our politicians in the name of goosing nominal GDP numbers. Having done Grizzly Man, I think I may have the courage to face her iniquity. Obviously I shall have to budget my time, and also budget industrial grade Bear Pepper Spray and vodka, her two known weaknesses. There shall also be need of a drone to confront Hilary Clinton at a safe distance and to chide her over her failure to prevail at anything save liquor and multiple suicides. Hilary, I shall say, how do you reconcile your failures with your inconsequential status? A greater alcoholic than you has seized your thunder and looks to blunder in ways which even you should not imagine. Also, what the Hell is your husband doing there, Jack Daniels Princess? Will you not spray him and the young trailer park maiden with a garden hose? This is unseemly.

Zaf Iqbal became emotional as he declared: "I am proud of the fact I am a mackem. I am proud that I am English."
Did you become culturally english? You know boring, Christian, and with an aversion to spicy food? People int the west are tired of seeing their culture and heritage thrown away for the benefit of their elites. And frankly after a recent immigrant went on a murder spree of children. CHILDREN. You should be begging those protestors for their forbearance. Let's play a game. Let's ask what would happen if thousands of Brits moved to...Saudi Arabia. They demanded the government enforce their Christian religious practice including with tax payer dollars. They demanded welfare. They demanded everything be available in English. And then they went about murdering and raping the locales. How do you think the Saudis would react? And would they be wrong to do so? Posted by: 18-1 at August 05, 2024 11:21 PM (oZhjI) 309

The left tells me in one breath that income inequality is the most important issue of the day, then that we need immigrants to do the jobs native born Americans won't do in the next. Well, guess what happens to the salary of a job when no one wants to do it? It goes...up. This is basic economics. I saw a clip of a former Fox contributor, a black gay guy. He described how the Dems, and whoever else is pulling strings, 'bathed Kamala in blackness, just as they did with Obama'. Sent her to Howard, had her join an elite sorority. Then sent her to CA to bathe her in more blackness in Oakland/San Fran; Obama was sent to Chicago and 'community organizing' to bathe in blackness. Then she went onto the state job and beyond. But they made her black as she was never black. And that dude from Fox explained that she's not African-American in the sense that her family history is not American slavery and all the baggage that has; mentioned his Granddad couldn't get the GI Bill after WWII, Jim Crow, things like that. She also went to an elite middle and high school in Canada (as a dot Indian) before going to Howard. She was never black, until the commies decided they need to bamboozle the black vote once more. Kamala Harris is a complete avatar. Totally fake. Just like Obama.

The Consolidated B-24 and the Martin B-26 never get any respect. They had flaws but they and their crews did their jobs in WW2.
More B-24s were produced than any other US bomber. A B-26 nicknamed "Flak Bait" flew the most combat missions of any USAAF bomber, 202. It is in the Smithsonian National Aerospace Museum. Built in 1943, Flak-Bait lived up to its name by being shot with over 1,000 holes, returned twice on one engine (once with the disabled engine on fire), and lost its electrical system once and its hydraulic system twice. Despite the level of damage it received, none of Flak-Bait's crew was killed during the war and only one was injured. Over two years of operations Flak Bait accumulated 725 hours of combat time and participating in bombing missions in support of the Normandy Landings, the Battle of the Bulge, and Operation Crossbow against V-1 flying bomb sites. Because, those two airplanes are remarkably similar in every external aspect as to layout, planform, silhouette, etc. To be sure, they're vastly different in construction, engines and every other detail. But it'd be great to get some piloted paragraphs on the qualities of each, how they handled, performed, endured. I had a small crowd visit me today. Back in June, at a car show in Three Hills, I talked to some folks who have GMC coach, RV conversion. Model 4104, powered by Detroit Diesel. I told them about the Flxible coach I have here, and invited them to drop by. Well, out of the blue today, I got a call. "We're on the way home from Camrose. Can we stop in?" I said, "Sure. I happen to be in midst of work on the Flx, as it happens, too."
Well, around 4:00, not one, but two GMC 4104 coaches show up, park on the road out front, followed by a Chevy Astro van. The whole family piles out of these vehicles. We had a nice visit, they got the grand tour, and I fired up the Cummins in the Flx for their entertainment. > Metals and treasuries are a hedge against really bad economics
Metals, yes... treasuries? Maybe not. Depends on just how bad things get. I've seen a 2 billion mark postage stamp from the heyday of the Weimar Republic. By that point they'd given up designing new stamps in favor of just overprinting the new value on old stamps in heavy black ink. Story: a wealthy German man died, dividing his fortune between his two sons. The frugal son invested his money in safe German government bonds, while the spendthrift son blew his on wine, women, and song. After the collapse of Weimar, the frugal son found that his government bonds were completely worthless, while, due to a major glass shortage, the spendthrift son was able to sell his cellar full of empty liquor bottles for a tidy sum. the benefit if treasuries is that they are spendable when your stocks take a puke and need time to recover some value, and you need to, say, replace that HVAC system now, or you suddenly want to put some money into a stock during a dip and you want to do some bottom feeding.
they also earn a bit of interest, unlike stuffing a pillow with twenties. They aren't really a good investment, but as a bit of liquidity to get you through a tough patch, they have some merit. Posted by: Kindltot at August 06, 2024 01:00 AM (D7oie) 424

385 I would love to see a head-to-head flying comparison of the Martin B-26 (in it's most produced form), vs. the Japanese "Betty" medium bomber, also in it's common variant.
Biggest differences are all going to be about design philosophy. Japanese plane idea was to make them as light as possible. Saved material, gave more range and maneuverability. Drawback was comparative flimsiness. Also completely collapsed when we got much more powerful engines so the advantages were negated. So then the Japanese had flimsy planes that couldn't outperform opponents. Disaster ensued. Posted by: azjaeger at August 06, 2024 01:50 AM (3/XaG) 455

Posted by: Hour of the Wolf I don't believe that was a crewed ship. It's for resupply. They're now pushing the astronauts return out to late August or potentially even mid September. They haven't committed to how that will happen. Gambling with the Aston lives is apparently still on the table. Posted by: Sock Monkey * unburdened at August 06, 2024 02:13 AM (5W5fc) 466

The Northrop Grumman Cygnus NG-21 cargo spacecraft is not for return to Earth. It gets filled with trash and 'cesspit' stuff and sent down, where it will burn up on reentry, using the atmosphere and the high velocity to generate an incinerator in situ. It has no protection from the heat generated. I'm sure you all knew that. Posted by: Ciampino - Si Ispettore, non ho trovato la sveglia #12 at August 06, 2024 02:14 AM (qfLjt) 467

There is a crew module at the ISS. Remember the 3 (4?) astronauts we watched go up a couple of months ago. I think it was a Russian capsule. It's kept there for emergency use in case the ISS needs to be abandoned in a hurry plus it is there as a ferry to Earth in case ..... I would not want to use a possibly crippled craft to return to Earth. I think that those two have privately told NASA no way they are going back by Boeing so please make other arrangements. NASA is foot-dragging to avoid losing face but the longer they drag this out the worse they will look. They should have made a Falcon rescue mission public within a few days of the problems becoming public. That would have looked both professional and nonpartisan. Hello Friends. I think you should let the toilet paper hang the way you want it to.
I prefer 'under', hubs prefers 'over'. Classic house divided. Posted by: ALH If the issue isn't cats using it as a toy, but a classic "he rolled/she rolled" argument, then the solution is simple. Go to the home improvement store, buy a second TP dispenser. "His and hers." Fixed! If you've got mounting surfaces on both sides of the throne, this can also fix the problem where you both want it to roll the same way, but one of you is right-handed and one left-handed. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at August 06, 2024 02:24 AM (ny95y) How? Commie parents. Both Kamala's and Barry's fathers is/was commies. Why make her 'black'? The black vote, of course, just like with Barry; that's why they really didn't talk about his white mom, keep him black. Right or wrong, being dot Indian is not a selling point to be president of the United States. Obama ushered in a commie coup. He's still calling the shots for somebody or bodies. In 1983, I was elected by my local precinct to be the 2nd youngest ever (alternate) delegate ever sent to the Republican State Convention (Ft. Worth) for the '84 election cycle. In that same year, I received in the mail, a very richly packaged envelope of materials, including an invitation to join the Council of Foreign Relations. I was 22 years old, and had only left the USA once before, on a day trip to Rosarita Beach, MX. THAT is when I smelled the skunk. And have never been proven wrong, since. Vivek is sounding the alarm again...
Vivek Ramaswamy @VivekGRamaswamy If we stay one step behind, we’re going to lose this race. Last summer, when Ronna McDaniel made GOP presidential candidates sign the “Beat Biden” pledge, I said it was silly because we weren’t going to be running against Biden & he wasn’t really even the President in any real sense. I said it again on the debate stage last November. The hard truth is that Democrats lured the GOP into spending 18 months of financial & political capital criticizing Joe Biden, which proved not only irrelevant but counterproductive. Instead, our own strategy gave Democrats the cover to swap in a candidate who avoided saying things in a primary that could damage her in the general election. At the same time, the media won artificial “credibility” in the eyes of independent voters because they publicly excoriated Biden, which makes it harder for Republicans now to allege partisanship when they prop up Kamala. Posted by: Mister Ghost at August 06, 2024 02:41 AM (TGPs7) 477
We were caught flat-footed, and that caused us to say unhelpful things in recent weeks. Calling for Biden to step down as President is senseless & self-defeating. Criticizing Kamala for locking up too many people as a prosecutor makes her sound “tougher” on crime than she actually is. Alleging that Kamala covered up for Biden’s cognitive deficits contradicts the allegation that she staged a coup: independent voters aren’t persuaded by either of those arguments anyway.
Here’s my concern now: our latest strategy of repeatedly labeling Kamala a radical leftist will soon fall flat too. Tomorrow, she’s going to announce a VP who will be undoubtedly presented as a “moderate” which will undermine the claim that she’s a Marxist. There will be “far-left protests” at the DNC, which will only make the ticket look even more moderate in the eyes of independent voters. Kamala is changing her policy positions daily to appear more centrist. The media will cover for her at every step; the fact she said some crazy stuff in the past won’t really matter by comparison to what she’s saying & how the press portrays her now. Posted by: Mister Ghost at August 06, 2024 02:42 AM (TGPs7) ++++++++++++ My concern is that labeling someone does nothing. So it's a label, so what? And it's pointless anyway. If Kamala calls someone "far-right," I know they're fine. We call someone "far left" or "radical left," Kamala's followers think it's great. Morning, fellow insomaniacals! Back to the regular routine, up early with coffee. Oddly, since I have a new tobacco blend that just came today, "Cowboy Coffee," I have no desire for a pipe. The weather is so oppressive even now at 3 am as I sit in the A/C, and the sun so hot against my windows in the afternoon, that it somehow does not seem like pipe smoking weather.
Maybe I just need a break so I won't (pun incoming!) burn out. . . . Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 06, 2024 04:10 AM (omVj0) 494
