The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln steamed into Naval Base Guam over the weekend for a port call ahead of its mission to the Middle East. The carrier arrived Sunday with its strike group, according to information posted on the Defense Visual Information Distribution System and Naval Base Guam’s Facebook page. “The carrier is making its first scheduled port visit for 2024 to Guam to provide the crew time to tour the island, get some rest and relaxation, and participate in several community service events,” the Facebook post said. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the Abraham Lincoln to the Middle East, where U.S. forces are assembling to forestall an attack against Israel, according to a Pentagon statement Friday from spokeswoman Sabrina Singh. Make no mistake about this, the scenes today in #Belfast are a historic moment. For Republican, Catholic Irish to stand shoulder to shoulder with Loyalist, Protestant English is something to behold and these images will be seen in history books to future generations. This is something to build on against a common enemy that is mass immigration of Islamic extremism. Irish and English are not targeting each others kids, they are not targeting our women on the streets and they are not killing our brave men taking up arms in the defence forces. Our governments in both the UK and Ireland have opted for divisive, race baiting, two tier polices and policing and it's only outcome is an impending race war, which is not something we've ever wanted. "It is now almost ten years since NASA handed Boeing a contract to develop a vehicle to transport crew to and from the ISS. In the meantime Musk has got a crewed ship docked at ISS and another on the way. But BOEING has the contract. "Meanwhile, a NASA spokesperson told Ars the US agency is "evaluating all options." Posted by: Ciampino - Si Ispettore, la cucina e pronta #07 at August 04, 2024 10:58 PM (qfLjt) The "Press" was a thing when the Constitution was written. Not a group of people. The "press" had nothing to do with the people, especially the "yellow journalists" of the Robber Barron era. The basis for the amendment was formed in the attempts to censor "The Press" from the first landing of a press in the Americas. I agree, to an extent, that the Weaponized Stupidity we see now is a direct result of giving idiots the same status as a labor intensive machine that, with shit tons of work could produce a document/pamphlet/book in 1775. Polynikes, I really really liked Fall Guy. I was sad it didn't do well in theaters, especially since Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt were both coming off Oscar buzz for Barbie and Oppenheimer. Great date film, lots of action, romance, and nothing too woke or inappropriate. The mystery/everyman in peril plot wasn't breaking new ground, but I don't expect these movies to do that, just be fun.
I was surprised they let the villain actually BE the villain. I get the sense the director (a stunt guy) is less woke that the rest of Hollywood and just wanted to deliver a fun love letter to the stunt people. Posted by: LizLem at August 04, 2024 11:48 PM (QAK8m) 398
7 Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick?
A 56 Buick, this year. Few things would be nicer than a fully optioned 56 Roadmaster, made of modernish rust resistance steel and powered by a circa 2005 truck V8 and automatic overdrive transmission. 20ish MPG on freeway, about 275 hp so fast enough, rides like cloud, has plenty of room, handles ok on near factory size modern radial tires, and lasts 200-250k with modern oil changes. What the future SHOULD have been. Posted by: azjaeger at August 04, 2024 11:48 PM (3/XaG) Posted by: Miklos suggests at August 04, 2024 11:48 PM (1CnH+) 400
One of my ongoing listens is The Complete Hot Five & Hot Seven Recordings, Vols 1 and Vols 2. In those recordings Louis Armstrong and his band utterly define 20th century Jazz. The recordings are profoundly original, profoundly defining, and profoundly musical.
I try to put my ears in that moment and grasp that I had never heard anything like that before in my life and that from this time forward nothing in music would ever be the same. I never succeed at doing that but what I have taken from the exercise repeatedly is some tack sharp ears for what comprises great music and great performance. Everything in Jazz after that was a variation and expansion of the bands music. One doesn't grasp that right away; you have spend a few years with them and then one day you wake up in bed in the middle of the night and go damn. Nobody is infallible. I didn't say he was. But he's also not the clown that many of his detractors say he is. I'm so old I remember when Ron was going to take him down in the primary. Ron spent $150 million to lose Iowa. Super. I don't agree with every move Trump makes and his ego is annoying but he also has shown that he has more staying power than any candidate for the biggest job in the world than any of us have seen in our lifetimes and that can't be denied. He came out of nowhere, no political family to carry him, no part of the party to support him, and one everything. If we didn't have such a biased media what he did would be widely recognized as one of the greatest political accomplishments in the history of this country and he's still going. I flatly reject the "Trump doesn't know what he's doing" because it's obviously wrong. I was told before the Biden debate Trump was a dummy for agreeing to debate on CNN and now Joe is history. The image which precedes the content of this thread which is only to be understood as open in the context of the night, is most pleasant. It is evident that the Autumnal Equinox has made its entry into the lives of the subjects, and all about is the beauty of an impending death in all its melancholy radiance. Soon comes the cold and the darkness of the abyss. These are stirring thoughts of good cheer for Werner.
Earlier this week, while I was visiting the grave of Mississippi's loathsome scribbler William Faulkner so that i might scream at and berate him for his disregard for punctuation and abominable indulgence of stream-of-consciousness run-on sentences that continue for pages (Absalom. Absalom alone is enough to merit his place in Hell - seriously, calling a character a "man-horse-devil?) I -wait, this sentence nears that which I would condemn. Curse you, Faulkner and your infernal influence. Werner must begin again. Shall we deem this comment one, with a successor to follow sequentially? The medical community didn't cover themselves in glory during the MkUltra business with the gubbmint contracts for "psychic driving" and LSD/Cattle Prod sleep deprivation experiments. Inmates were kept tripping for 77 days in one incident, and not allowed to sleep, and hypnotized, etc.

Military personnel, prisoners, etc. A lot of really weird stuff sort of followed these spook psychiatrists around, and this was in the early 1950s. So here has Werner resumed:
Es tut mir leid for the previous derail. Is it an empirically objective truth that Kamala Harris is running for the office of President in your republic? Granted, the current occupant is a dimly sentient potato, but are people in this nation really to accept that a cackling creature of uncertain attainments and an adversarial relationship with veracity seen as fit to serve? Werner is puzzled. I had long believed that Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was an experiment to see if the 14th district of New York would vote for and elect a Muppet, but some have assured me that she was real. At first I remonstrated with them, insisting that I would not fall for such a blasphemy again as I had done when all urged me to believe that the leathery cadaver known as Nancy Pelosi was human. Nein, I told them, I won't get fooled again. Then I donned a pair of aviator's shades while The Who blared "Yeaaaahhhh" in the background. David Caruso, thus are you avenged. If Ocasio Cortez is real, then the cryptid known as Kamal might be real as well. Werner needs cognac, and may have been remembering a CSI spin-off. I don't like judging parents solely by how their kids turn out. I know plenty of amazing parents with a bum of a son, a Fredo or a Hunter. Kids make choices. The big difference seems to be that Trump doesn't enable his relatives, he tries to help them but also expects accountability, whereas Biden and Obama don't with their kids. I remember hearing Ivanka say she didn't just get blank check for school trips or vacations, she had to earn the money for it herself. And all the Trump kids had to put in the work behind the scenes or on construction sites to be allowed to join the family business. Apparently the nephew(?) who just wrote the tell-all book did so because Trump family cut him off from the money trough due to poor choices and Fredo behavior, and the book is his hissy fit with a paycheck. 391 The new Labour Government is off to the worst start of any new British Government in history. 2 weeks and the country is racked with riots. If the idiots wondering about the lack of trust in the medical profession it might have something to do with things like at the height of the pandemic my third child was born in Atlanta’s largest hospital and only sign of the pandemic was the masks and insane social distancing rule. This lead to him joining Chuck Hickling's Tempus crew for the last years Chuck ran his boat (his last race was at age 60). Chuck was the last of Owner/Builders and after that Hydros became reliable, turbine powered, and boring as hell by comparison. Don't buy 50 pounds of Rice unless you already like Rice, and know how to store it, and make it. Brown rice will not keep longer term, it might tend to go rancid where a polished, white rice may not. Maybe a 20 pound bag of brown rice in the freezer. It is good stuff, I like it with red beans.
If you have real protein to go with, like Beef or Chicken, you're really doing well. Andouille is hard to get the good stuff. Rice and beans makes a "complete" protein, sort of, but you can feel your body working it. It must take an extra step or two in there to combine it. The big thing that struck me over time, even when the world is falling apart there ain't any Jubilee on interest payments or mortgages, or taxes, or utility bills or the mundane tasks that are always around.
Posted by: Common Tater at August 05, 2024 12:38 AM (+KIio) It's because of the relationship banks have with debt, there is no longer any link between assents in a bank via deposits accounts, and their loans, the loans instead are backed by the creation of credit via the Federal Reserve, and the more loans are created the more money is created out of thin air on the ledgers. banks have access to more money by loaning imaginary debt to a borrower, and the borrower creates the money by paying it back. However a seven year jubilee doesn't work well in a 30 year loan monetary system, where bankruptcy laws do far better. Jubiliees do better in a cash strapped society where most debts are "on ledger" and are carried against possible future debts instead of redeemable in cash. Good to see another shortwave fan from back in the day! I assembled a lot of QSL cards and first came across a few numbers stations during the Seventies. I wonder if shortwave as a broadcasting medium is anything close to what it was back then, or if folks have mostly moved away from it. Interesting aside - note that WOAI is a 'W' station - even though it is west of the Mississippi. There are a few 'K' stations east of the Mississippi, KDKA in Pittsburgh I think (again...memory). They were chartered in the early days before the K/W convention came to be.
Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at August 05, 2024 01:17 AM (QGaXH) Yes. In 1924 the rule that K meant a station west of the Mississippi and W meant a station east of the Mississippi went into effect. So, if you encounter anything different it shows how old your station is. I do not know the year WOAI was founded but it was definitely before 1924. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at August 05, 2024 01:17 AM (QGaXH) KDKA if memory serves is the oldest commercial radio station in the United States. Shows how international conventions are with the United States. Radio station call letters starting with D? Germany. E? Spain. F? France. G? Britain. X? Mexico. C? Canada. J? Japan. H? Switzerland (Helvetia). When it came time to assign a letter for the United States, naturally we got K. Oh yeah, you're big. You need another letter. W it is. (WTF?) Posted by: SFGoth at August 05, 2024 02:54 AM (KAi1n) - Bought glue traps once when we had more mice in the garden than usual. Caught one under the kitchen sink. That was that. Later used another one to catch a juvenile snake which found sanctuary in the most narrow space between a wall and a fixed cabinet. Fortunately, it was not a venomous snake. Posted by: SFGoth at August 05, 2024 02:54 AM They are efficient. Mice infested my garage. I caught 14 on glue traps and 2 on regular traps. I had so many mice that a neighborhood cat was hanging out on my porch. If it makes you feel any better, I checked the traps daily and used an hammer and wooden stake to quickly dispatch the mice. I have an ultrasonic device that does a pretty good job of deterring the mice. That and the little boxes of poison bait outside. Around here the mice will bring deer ticks into the house. Or find a way into your service panel and build a nest. So choice between disease or fiery death? Sorry, when it's kill or be killed they lose.
