Greetings, HORDE! Lest the banner picture lead you to believe I have a strange fetish about old Grumman airplanes*, let me put your minds at ease. It is fire season and the theme of this ONT is airborne firefighting or, in the industry lingo, “air attack”. Also, if you’re not “ aeronautically inclined”, or time limited, skip all the airplane stuff and head south to more traditional ONT fare.

*Well, full disclosure, I did fly the A-6 Intruder and who doesn’t love all the Grumman cats?

So, let’s go!

First, the lineage of the S2F “STOOF” started with entry into service in 1954 as an anti-submarine warfare platform. It then became the WF-2 Tracer “STOOF with a ROOF” or the “Willy Fudd”. Heh. (Navy guys, you know, lots of time at sea and no women or beer. Nowadays maybe more women and soy lattes.)
(Note: if you don’t understand the early Navy aircraft designation protocol, don’t worry about it. That’s for another time and another thread.)

stoof.jpg

It also was used in Training Command as the advanced multi-engine trainer and allowed E-2 pilots to CARQUAL before going to the expensive airplane. And finally, the subject of my last ONT, it was the C-1 Trader COD aircraft. It was powered by two Wright 1820 cubic inch radial engines and was a rugged bird in the best Grumman tradition. It was phased out in the late 70’s and most were sent to the bone yard at Davis Monthan. However, Marsh Aviation in Mesa, AZ developed one of the great repurposing programs for the STOOF. With no small amount engineering imagination and expertise, they turned 23 of the aircraft into air attack firefighters. It is now known as the Marsh/Grumman S-2FAT Turbo Tracker. (No, not a "FAT" Turbo Tracker, "F" is for Grumman (don’t ask) and “AT” is for Air Attack.) You should not be surprised that the Grumman Tracker has its very own outstanding and thorough website because…uh…aviation geeks. Here’s Tanker 88 as an example. You will see “her” again shortly.

tanker88.jpg

I’ve often thought that air attack would be a cool job. It involves lots of equipment, coordination and planning and takes place in a threat environment. And you get to “enjoy” it while nobody is actually shooting at you, although obviously there is lots of fire involved. What better way to learn about the job than to talk to an air attack pilot? I found a video Juan Browne made last year at the Grass Valley, CA air attack base. He talks to air attack pilot Abbie Crews for almost 30 minutes about her career, the mission, the airplane and the lifestyle. She presents herself as a cool, professional experienced pilot and, I think, would make a credible subject for Red Friday. Here’s a taste:

Here’s the full interview if you are so inclined.

If not, no worries. Ace hosts a busy HORDE so here’s the short story:

Abbie went to the Air Force Academy, flew C-17s and MC-12s. After leaving active duty she was searching for her next flying job and airlines were not very attractive to her. She got the job with CALFIRE, starting out in the OV-10 and then moved to the Turbo Tracker. The schedule is 10 on, 5 off. If it’s an active season, she could be working 10 hours a day or more. The pay is commensurate with major airline pilot pay. The air attack pilots even have a union or "association" as we like to call it. I learned a lot in those 30 minutes, and it still sounds like a pretty cool job.

The HORDE dwelling in the western US know that this has been a busy season so far. Thankfully the current incidents are not as bad as >the Camp Fire in 2018, but the current Park Fire has burned up over 400,000 acres, destroyed hundreds of structures, incalculable wildlife and displaced hundreds of people although, miraculously, no fatalities.

parkfire.jpg

From the CALFIRE PARK FIRE website: 6588 personnel, 40 helicopters, “numerous” air tankers and 192 dozers. If you watched the video, Abbie noted that the dozers are one of the most effective pieces of firefighting equipment. Makes sense now but it would not have been my first guess.

firedozer.jpg

And all that fire…what could it be? ‘Global warming”? “Global climate crisis”? Nope, sorry fans, just an idiot with a prior arrest record and a burning car.

Ronnie Dean Stout II, 42, of Chico, was arraigned Monday in connection with the Park Fire, which has quickly become one of the largest recorded wildfires in California's history. During his first court appearance, he was charged with felony arson with an enhancement of special circumstances due to prior convictions… Stout was allegedly spotted just before 3 p.m. PT on Wednesday pushing a burning car down a gully…

Aerial firefighting is a great application of the airplane enabled by imagination and engineering excellence. WW2 bombers like the B-17 and PB4Y started out being the “heavies”. Then C-130s, DC-6/7s came along. The amazing Air Tractor 802 Fire Boss is used all over the world. Same for the Canadair CL-415, the B737s (not MAXs, btw) all the way up to B747s that could show up to a fire if required. And that’s just the fixed wing. Helicopters could be a whole other thread!

firecomp.jpg

Even the DC-7B, Ship 717, now parked in front of the Delta Flight Museum used to be Tanker 33 for the International Air Response company based in Arizona.

Ship717.jpg

Aerial firefighting is a cool job but it’s not without risk. Y’all may remember seeing this one in the news?

C130crash.jpg

CALFIRE lost one of their own Turbo Trackers in 2014.

…while on approach, Tanker 81 struck trees with its left wing. Following the impact with the trees, the airplane entered a descending left roll, and it then impacted on the top of an approximate 800-ft-tall rock cliff. A fire erupted during the impact, the airplane fragmented, and the main wreckage was projected over the cliff and scattered over a wide river valley below the cliff face.

That’s tough stuff and thankfully a rare event.

Assembling this part of the thread has been very educational and has given me even greater appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters in the air and on the ground. (MCGRUFF, saluting you sir!) Like I like to say, I’m glad they are on our side. Of course, good forest management might preclude the need for all the effort, but that should be covered in another thread. Now, on to...

Traditional ONT fare

First, it’s August 06. In 1945, it was a “brave new world” moment when Little Boy detonated over Hiroshima. Whether you think it was a good idea or a bad idea, my study indicates that it brought a prompt end to the war. The emperor mentioned the bombs specifically in his statement to the people. If the Allies had proceeded with Operation Downfall, I have no doubt the death count would have been in the many millions. My dad was on the staff of the 20th AD which was the first reserve afloat (in other words, the second wave) for the second part of Downfall, Operation Coronet, which was to target Tokyo. He didn’t talk about it too much but he did say they all thought that if they had to set foot on Japanese soil, none of them would survive. I am personally okay with the boys not having to test that theory.

Three years earlier, The 1st Marine Division was moving into place for the amphibious assault on Guadalcanal to take place on the 7th. At least the Marines didn’t have to worry about the next item when they hit the beach, although they did have “other concerns” at the time.

Extra stuff at the beach? A couple of weeks ago, beach goers at the exclusive islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard were greeted with shards of fiberglass and chunks of foam material.

…“the largest turbine in the western world.” It was supposed to be one of the 62 turbines that would make up the first large-scale, commercial offshore wind farm in the United States.

But just nine months later, the project has been suspended by the federal government after the now infamous turbine blade failure on July 13th that left Nantucket’s beaches and the waters surrounding the island littered with fiberglass and styrofoam debris…

windblade.jpg

As John F’n Kerry might say, “Mon Dieu! Mon agenda vert!” I am familiar with the Cape and Islands, and I can’t even imagine 62 of those abominations sitting offshore. As if living on those islands isn’t expensive enough already, now we must add man-made environmental disasters? BTW, Vineyard Wind is just the latest hustle that took over after Cape Wind folded up.

But it may not be over yet. Perhaps adults will step in…

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said all operations are shut down until further notice… The turbine blades are made of non-toxic fiberglass. Fragments can vary in size and are usually green or white.

Vineyard Wind said that while the fiberglass is not hazardous to people or the environment…

Well, that’s a relief. Not hazardous, unless you get a shard of fiberglass jabbed into your foot. And who are those “adults”? Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement which was established in 2011 under "BarryHO's" Department of the Interior. (bold mine)

Since its establishment in 2011, BSEE has been the lead federal agency charged with improving safety and ensuring environmental protection related to the offshore energy industry, primarily oil and natural gas, on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The Bureau vigorously regulates oversight of worker safety, emergency preparedness, environmental compliance, and conservation of resources.

I’ll bet they really enjoy being vigorous, eh? And I get it. This layer of government was added in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. I was in Orange Beach about a week or so after the spill started, and the fumes were pretty bad. Never let a good disaster go to waste. The T-shirts and memes came out quickly, “We’ve been BPeed on” and such. So even amid the disaster and fear pron, humor still found a way and abundant life returned to the Gulf.

Speaking of life, “life finds a way”
This is a watermelon vine growing out from under the office at my local airport, finding a way. Heh.

watermelon.jpg

So, great HORDE of hordes, go forth and grab life by the, the, you know, the thing!

His lieutenant, LT Armour (of the hot dog family) got orders to ship back to the States for 30 days leave and then report to San Francisco to ship out as a replacement in the Pacific. He said LT Armour sat there and cried, that he had won one war and they were sending him to die in another. My dad said he felt bad for him, but he was kind of glad that they didn't need privates.

Funny thing about that. More people died in the firebombing of Tokyo than died in the two atomic bomb drops. Really overlooked stat.

Still, it is a tragedy for tens of thousands of Japanese that died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There is a newspaper in the Air Force Museum that states "20,000 killed when Hiroshima Army base bombed". The fire bomb raids on Tokyo and Yokohama earlier in the year were actually more deadly, but the bombs were total destruction. The average Japanese probably supported the Emperor and such, but they didn't "vote" for the war. War is always tragic, which makes it something to be avoided.

My sorry F-89J Scorpion fighters are not dealing with the Soviet Tu-16KSR-2-11 (Badger G's) that are after my surface ships. They're armed with AS-5 "Kelt" anti-radar missile that far outrange my defenses.

And the anti-air missiles of this era really suck donkey balls. As does my current strategy.

78 1987 Carson City Nevada.
Parents had just bought my brother's family home.
We were standing on the porch watching a fire in the mountains West of us. It was getting close to some really high end houces on the side of the mountain.
B17, Boray bomber we called them. Came in for a sweep. Maybe 100 feet off the mountain side. Drops a concentrated load of retardant along the back fence of the houses and tries to pull up.
We watch him disappear beneath the horizon all Oh Fuck!!!
He was heading straight for us when he vanished.

Few seconds later we hear the roar of his engines and see him full emergency throttled as he goes over the top of us maybe 40 feet off the ground. Just above the houses. You could see the veins in his neck as he was pulling that fucking bird up with everything he had in his being.

He made four more runs that evening and that pass saved those houses.
I sort of envy you people who don't have to deal with wild fires.

That was part of the problem with Japanese leadership - they really didn't think there was anything the Glorious Japanese People could not do and their Glorious Japanese Imperial Army and Navy could conquer any foe. And anyone who spoke caution generally got slammed down quickly. It spoke of the incredible respect for Yamamoto and a couple of others that they continued their careers despite being wary of the giant.

Remember it basically took the Emperor stomping all over his military leadership to get them to surrender after the second one.

That is why the bombs were so necessary - it wouldn't have just been millions of American and Allied soldiers dying to conquer the islands, but every last Japanese man, woman, and child in the islands.

200 15 It doesn't seem like an airplane could carry much fire extinguishing chemicals. Those fires cover a huge area.

As I understand it, they do not try to extinguish the fire, but retard its spread so that other slower means (bulldozers, crews) have the time to clear fire lines (zones free of burnable vegetation) that will ultimately stop its spread. Then within those zone boundaries, the fire is allowed to burn itself out.

My Dad also served on a supply ship in the Pacific. He had met my Mom, though, with one kid. But there's a better than decent chance I might not be here if the invasion of the Home Islands had occurred. As stated above, it would have been a bloodbath (in the real and not metaphorical sense). Literally tens of millions of people on both sides.

The atomic bombings saved so many lives.

The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy were not going to leave the Philippines in US possession. They calculated that as soon as the Japanese moved on the Briitish and Dutch possessions, FDR would built-up air and surface ship and submarine forces in the Philippines, creating a huge threat to Japanese shipments from the captured territories. The Japanese knew the Luzon Strait was a potential crippling shipping bottleneck for them. As it became later in the actual war.

My parents were coming of age in 1941 (Dad was 17, Mom was 20), and they recalled that most people knew "war was coming". They all knew it.
The US Government imposed an oil embargo in October 1941, to starve the Imperial Navy of fuel oil. At the beginning of the embargo (the US was a major oil exporter at the time), it was estimated that the Imperial Navy had about a six - week reserve of fuel. They all knew SOMETHING was going to happen, just didn't know where.

What you typed actually reinforces my point, i.e., that the Imperial Japanese govt made an enormous & unnecessary strategic miscalculation on a global scale.

SCREW Luzon (yadda yadda)! That could've been a POTENTIAL problem for a future day. There was no need whatsoever to attack Pearl when they did, if their strategic goal was to gain oil/rubber resources immediately.

The Japanese knew that attacking the Philippines meant war with the US. Meaning the US Navy would execute War Plan Orange, sending the Pacific Fleet to protect sea lanes to the Philippines and to seek-out and destroy the Japanese fleet.

The Japanese Navy knew it could not win a battleship slugfest with the USN in late 1941. Yamato had not yet been commissioned and Musashi was a year from commissioning. So the Japanese Navy formulated and executed the Pearl Harbor attack to whittle-down the USN battle line. The Japanese strategy was a string of military necessity dominoes falling once they Japanese decided it had to conquer the Dutch East Indies for its resources.

I believe the US and the rest of NATO were as surprised as Putin that the Russian war machine wasn't nearly as good as expected. Especially against the Ukraine military. Everything since the Russian failure to take Kiev in the first week has been ad hoc strategery by both sides. Once Joey dug in his heels against Putin, logic in the West went out the window. It is not written on stone tablets that the 'Good Guys' win every war. At least not the first stages of every war.

310 I don't know much about tbe Taiwanese boxer, but I do feel for the Algerian one.
No business boxing with women, but she was raised female. Her parents might not have even known she wasn't female for awhile;
usually in this situation, there is very little external gentitalia, or it's ambiguous, at best. Do you raise a son without a penis? What if there's an ever so slight proturbance, but a complete vaginal canal?
I totally understand the xy chromosome thing, but if her parents didnt have that checked and just figured it would be easier to raise a girl with messed up plumbing than a boy, I understand that, too.
I'm just saying this isn't one of those cases we typically see, when some guy just decides he wants to win medals, so he says he's a woman.

An XY "male" whose cells don't respond to testosterone, etc, develops as an almost-completely-normal female. Shorter stature, female muscle tone, female lung capacity, vagina, breasts, etc. But no cervix, uterus, or parts beyond.

The biggest problem we have with talking about this idiotic war of choice is that after all this time very few seem to understand what caused it. Many people seem to understand that the issues in the Middle East are complicated but also seem to believe that the issues in Eastern Europe are just that Putin started this war for no reason.

Russia didn't start this war. NATO did. Started one in Georgia too for the same reason but nobody cares about that because it didn't get much media coverage.

Two things can be true at the same time, Putin is a murderous thug and our own foreign policy isn't any better.

You probably want to write down a list of actions that are war crimes, and then write down what the Ukes accuse the Russans of, and what the Russians accuse the Ukes of doing, and see if any of the lists match/ Then figure out if there is any support for the claims.
If they match you have the joy of knowing that you understand what is going on and have the receipts. If they don't match you can rejoice that you have reached an incomplete spot in your understanding and you have the challenge of learning something new.

Re Intersex. You'll see it claimed recently that the intersex birth rate is about 1.7%. That's a deliberate attempt to inflate the numbers. They include things like Turner's and Klinefelter's and others that are chromosomal abnormalities that mess things up but don't cause a real divergence between chromosomal sex and "phenotypic" sex.

The true rate of the latter conditions is just about 0.02%.

And there are many of those in that tiny fraction. Sex differentiation is a very complex process, with many steps. It starts with a master switch on the Y chromosome that turns on. But that causes many other switches to flip and if one goes wrong, something get messed up.

Pretty much. You can look up the details. They will be "phenotypically" female. External female genitalia, but usually a short, "blind" vagina. Instead of ovaries, they'll have non-descended, not fully developed testicles.

They will most of the time have no uterus, cervix, or fallopian tubes. There is some hormone the testicles produces that turns off the "Mullerian duct" system that becomes those internal lady parts.

In some very rare cases however, that won't even work, and they'll have a uterus and the rest, but no ovaries.

Another really weird, and very rare thing is a XX-XY chimera. It's sort of the opposite of the identical twin process, where one egg splits into two.

Here's two fraternal twin sygotes, one male and the other female merge into one embryo. That then has a mix of genetically different XX and XY cells.

Anything can happen there depending on which cells turn into the relevant systems.

There is another one I'm trying to remember, something crazy. Some woman had a child, which turned out to have something wrong which prompted testing.

Turns out the mother was some sort of crazy, one-in-a-billion (if even that much) sort of intersex. She should not have been able to reproduce, but she did. And they couldn't understand why. They wrote it up, and had various experts come in.

So, Mrs. X, not only shouldn't you be able to reproduce, you shouldn't even exist. Yet you do. You're a freak of nature that challenges everything we think we know. We want to take you and your whole family tree in and test, poke and prod and figure this out.

Understandably, that wasn't received to well, and they weren't allowed to study them.

Posted by: Tom Servo at August 06, 2024 10:30 PM (W4qJF)

One of the problems with air tankers is they get modified, sometimes with questionable means. That particular airplane had some airframe 'surgery' in the region of the wing box, for some additional tankage, IIRC. A dear friend is an FAA IA, (inspector authorization), who worked at Lockheed Aircraft Services in Ontario, on C-130 mods. He knew that airplanes history, and said it was horrible. Regretfully, he didn't know that info beforehand. (Lockheed Ontario was not involved with its modification).

Yep, I thought I remembered it. There was House episode back in 2006, "Skin Deep" that was about a CAIS patient. Long story, but basically a beautiful teenage model has some strange problems.

House goes through various rabbit holes of this and that (Lupus or not, etc, etc). Turns out she has cancer, but where. Turns out to be her testicles. She is CAIS. House immediately starts calling her a he. (This was in the Before Tranny Time, and wouldn't be allowed today).

She refuses to believe it, yanks off her gown, "See, I'm a girl, I'm beautiful!' House replies, "That's just the cancer talking. Put your clothes back on, and then I'm gonna cut off your balls. You'll be fine".

"Encore" or "Vissza, Vissza" in Hungarian were less succesful.

436 The A-10 Thunderbolt II (low & slow) Warthog FTW!

--------------

While working as a federal contractor (Ford Aerospace operating "electronic AAA threat sites") in the late 80's, was out on the The Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) when I saw an A-10 Warthog go down in the desert.

Also knew an F-117 Nighthawk pilot (living in Las Vegas) who told me one night (in 1986) that one of these had recently crashed in Sequoia National Forest, California.

The U.S. government quarantined the entire area, and the Air Force attempted to keep the identity of the aircraft secret -- replacing the wreckage with that of a McDonnell F-101A Voodoo.

Depending, Thursday it may get a little breezy here, and maybe 1 - 2" of rain. I'm right of the edge of where she'll get. Could be more, could be less, depending on just where Debby decides to go.

You can reduce stress tremendously. You'll have to flip a swish.

You need to become selfish. I don't mean selfish as in taking candy from a baby.

I mean selfish as in putting the plane's oxygen mask on your face before applying it to your child.

You need to fully recharge yourself first before expending physical and mental energy on others.

The best is if you do this right, you'll have better energy to expend on others and simultaneously be less stressed out.

Don't let everything and everyone else drain you out. Stop that!
