When does Intel start selling off assets and then become a virtual company whose sole purpose is to sue other companies over patent infringement. I'm thinking I need a new office chair and I bet they have some good ones.

G'Day everyone
Wrecked my phone screen tabs yesterday. Tried to get a QR code reader because parts I have to put together have no instructions. It made QR reading the most important thing my phone does and wiped out icons for what I do with it. So trying to figure out how to find my email and stop turning my phone into a only QR reader Posted by: Skip at August 03, 2024 04:10 AM (fwDg9) 7

Pixy,
I have read that Intel is going to have a microcode fix for their 13th and 14th gen CPUs before the end of the year. What I haven't read if that this is a guaranteed fix for chips that haven't already been damaged. Any additional insights or information here? I've been setting aside money to pick up a 14th gen at a discount after the 15th gen's hit the market. I guess I'll have to wait until the code is out before I'll know for certain. I may end up just buying a 15th gen and avoid the whole thing. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at August 03, 2024 04:22 AM (G8tt9) 11

Wife and I went out to lunch recently and the waitress knew nothing of the Trump proposal to stop taxing the tips of waiters and waitresses. Something that would save her thousands of dollars a year. How could she not know? Biden proposed eliminating student loans and that got a lot of press before the 2020 election. It could even have amounted to the razor thin 3 am victory. If the technology exists to deliver a semi-warm slice of pizza navigating a quarter mile of sidewalks and handicapped ramps, why isn't the same bringing me my chicken fried steak, green beans and cinnamon apples at Cracker Barrel instead of the lovely and gracious tattooed and pierced Lydia who forgot my iced tea? Speaking of restaurants, I thought wait staff were going to be replaced by robots.
-- It's just a matter of time. You can already get a glimpse of it at McDonalds. Ordering is at kiosks, and the person who brings your food out looks for your number at a table. The little number tent already has an RFID housing in it already, too. Related and before it happens fully, this system allows them to hire people who speak no english whatsoever. The kiosk sends the order back, the workers heat up the food, and then it is either placed on the counter/ handed to you while the employee struggles to say your name or the same employee walks out to find the number on your table. No communication or customer service required beyond the ability to count to 20. -- I only recently saw it for the first time. We were travelling and stopped at a McDonalds for the first time in a couple of years to get the $5 meal deal they had advertised (because I'm not paying $12 for lousy fast food). It was shocking how much they had changed, and this one was a relatively rural one where I'm sure people insist on SOME degree of human contact. I can't imagine how urban ones must be now. That whole COVID great reset scheme destroyed so many things. The idea that this type of thing was so quickly put in place and acceptance shoved on consumers is disgusting and disturbing. In-N-Out is the gold standard for how a fast food restaurant should be run. Other ones of note is Burgerville in the Portland Oregon area, Blake's here in New Mexico and Whataburger in Texas and New Mexico. None of them use kiosks and all the food is cooked fresh. That shouldn't be too much to ask but it apparently is.
In the Tucson area the McDonald's no longer have cash registers, you have to use the kiosk. I refuse to patronize those when I'm traveling through that area. I don't know about all Taco Bells, but the one here in Las Cruces is set up the same way and I've refuse to go there too. I've never been a big fast food customer but the changes made by the big chains has it curtailed that even further. I will never use these order kiosks. I don't find the McDonald's menu to be at all intuitive.
Granted my first kiosk experience was a decade ago at WaWa and they have a much simpler menu, and they're not 98% focused on the drive thru, but still. The "inside dining" experience at Mickey D's seems to have exited the scene. The counter has pretty much ceased to exist. You stand there and stand there hoping to be noticed by LaQuisha talking on her headset to the 12th car in the drive thru line. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 03, 2024 06:03 AM (dg+HA) 82

Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ satellites! (I'm reading Arthur C. Clarke's Imperial Earth, so Saturn's Titan is very much on my mind. Methane, ammonia, the whole schmear.)
I dreamed about locating a pipe and tobacco shop. (I dream of it in real life too, they're so rare, but that's beside the point.) I was in CO again, in a mall, looking for a shop whose name I'd forgotten. They were still there, and at first it seemed a small shop. Then I began to wander, and realized it was much larger inside than it seemed -- with more customers and staff than I remembered. They didn't keep all the pipes together in one spot, nor did they keep all the tobacco tins and jars together, so you had to traverse the whole shop to see what they had. And there were gadgets and other things, sort of like the shop out in front of a Cracker Barrel. Whatta start to a Saturday! I had a jumbo seared burger on some sort of fancy roll with fresh lettuce, ripe tomato, and pickles. Huge, brought some home. Fantastic pile of french fries which we killed. Wife had Ahi tuna wraps, three of them. She brought home two. It was nearly 95 degrees outside and we sat under a huge canopy but the view overlooking a mountain stream was magnificent and cooling. We drank three Yuengling lagers on tap between us. Fifty bucks without tip. The experience of the location, the serving size, and the attention to detail made it worth the money. We don't go out much and when we do it's usually to a cheaper place on a day they have specials but this is our once, maybe twice a year place. On the good news front, state wildlife has changed the blue cat length and creel limits.

Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) chief Ronen Bar told Netanyahu at the meeting, "We feel that on the one hand you are sending us to negotiate, but on the other hand you are making changes to the plan. If the meaning is that you are not interested in the outline on the table, tell us."
... Netanyahu lashed out at the heads of the defense establishment and said, "You are feeble. You don't know how to conduct tough negotiations. You are weak, you are putting words in my mouth. Instead of pressuring the Prime Minister, pressure [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar." Posted by: Braenyard at August 03, 2024 06:11 AM (DwQxJ) 97

Posted by: Ben Had - I'm similar and I think that's one reason it irks me. I get the cokes, what with licensing and what-not. But I know how easy and incredibly inexpensive tea is to make (and with zero actual cooking skills or monitoring required), and the idea that it's the same price as some multinational corporation's sugar water is always off-putting. I go out to eat quite a bit because I live by myself and cooking for myself is a pain in the butt. Plus going out to eat is also for the social interaction.
I have a certain expertise in knowing where really good inexpensive food is to be had in the Las Cruces area. I can get a nice meal for under $10 at multiple places; they won't be fancy. Say a really nice big burrito with lots of good ingredients in it; A knockout bowl of posole; A la carte carne asada tacos to die for, and so on. The more complex meals that I used to get for $12 are now pushing somewhere between $18 to $20, those I rarely order anymore because of the price. And yes, I now cook at home a lot more than I used to say. Maybe 50% of the time. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at August 03, 2024 06:15 AM (9ICrH) 101

So if I wanted to build a mid-tier gaming computer what should I look for in specs?
-- This site will be very helpful for getting a feel for things: https://pcpartpicker.com/ Radeon offers slightly better bang for the buck but Nvidia will be much more day-to-day user friendly. It will also likely allow more potential for AI image generation if that's something you've got any interest in. Nvidia 4060 and Radeon 7600XT should both be around $300. If you can swing the extra $100 for the 4060ti or 7700XT it would probably be worth it. Best bang for the buck (and also runs stable diffusion great) is the $250-270 ARC770 card, but for tip-top performance you'd need an Intel processor and MOBO that supports... resizable BAR, maybe? AMD has something similar and will support the 770, too, but I think intel gives its own equipment a slight edge, of course. Get as much RAM as you can afford, and buy a motherboard with four slots for future upgrades. That said... I think the real smart money is on something this (link goes to ebay): https://tinyurl.com/bpku63by There's a 3080 for $955, too. I'm sort of tempted to buy that one. Yes it's an intel, but it's already built, has a 3070 (a great video card) has a two year warranty. You'd have a hard time building for that price, especially when video cards are $300-400 and you might not have an old case or all the little things that add up quickly in a build. acer's refurbished store has lots of other similar deals, but I wouldn't be swayed by the real cheap stuff with the GTX1650s and other old cards. Get at least a 30XX or 40XX. https://tinyurl.com/mudp43y8 Posted by: If Moron Robbie wanted to see trannies abuse kids he'd go to a kindergarten at August 03, 2024 07:07 AM (6JA25) 193
Gordon, who is likely to play a central national security role in a Harris White House, was the co-author with Tabatabei of at least three opinion pieces that the lawmakers said had been “blatantly promoting the Iranian regime’s perspective and interests,” claiming that sanctions against Iran would create “catastrophe” and cause Tehran to “lash out.”
Cotton and Stefanik also claimed that Gordon was “closely associated with the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), another Iranian influence organization that allegedly collaborates with Tehran.” Yet more explosively still, the two lawmakers added that Amos Hochstein a senior energy official who has become an unofficial envoy to Lebanon, “allegedly passed intelligence about Israeli airstrikes to Hezbollah potentially as recently as this weekend.” https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/393995 Posted by: Braenyard at August 03, 2024 07:08 AM (DwQxJ) 194

>>Educate me please. If PDT wins isn't there a possibility of a mortgage interest rate drop? I don't think interest rates are dropping for the forseeable future. What will happen if Trump wins is that he unleashes American Energy Production and the price of oil drops substantially, which means instead of paying nearly four dollars at the pump, we're paying closer to 2.50, which would have tremendous knock on effects. Plus his program is generally business friendly and America centric, so I would expect economic conditions to improve substantially within 6 months. But that presupposes he wins and the GOP retains the house and wins the senate, anything that deviates from that scenario is simply rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. We have talked about your move before. Jump now, like a Heinlein character, and get accepted as part of the local community. Small towns of less than a thousand would take good works to speed the process, and larger communities are problematic because of the Left. Once a town is over 50,000, even using students, is when the Feds take over the running of the town, IMHO. Posted by: NaCly Dog at August 03, 2024 07:27 AM (u82oZ) 225

Posted by: Divide by Zero Unless there's a catastrophic failure in the economy, housing is never going to be cheaper than it is today. Remarkably here in the United States you can pin that cost permanently through the use of a fixed rate 30-year mortgage, for example. Effectively you will be your own landlord which is a hell of a lot better than having a landlord. That right there takes care of a lot of the inflationary pressures. After that comes property taxes, which if you pick your state right can be pretty stable and then home insurance prices which happens to be a three-ring circus right now. Short version is this is a no-brainer decision provided you don't get in over your head on the monthly mortgage costs. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at August 03, 2024 07:28 AM (9ICrH) 228

Ireland’s small Jewish community is in turmoil after a British rabbi who had been hired to circumcise local babies was arrested and charged with practicing medicine without a license. I guess someone called into a tip line. Posted by: Divide by Zero at August 03, 2024 08:35 AM (RKVpM) 342
I have an electric push mower. 80V/2Ah. It's got 2 speeds. When I use it it typically runs at the higher speed and exhausts the battery in about 20 minutes or less. It's fine for around the deck, pool, garden and tight spaces the tractor can't get into. But it's no substitute for a gas mower. It's just easier to maintain... until the Li-Io batteries die. Those cost more than the mower.

"I think electric motors are rated in horsepower."
They are, but I don't think electric mowers are. It's easy enough to figure out though if you know the amps and voltage. For comparison, a 15 amp 120v plug in electric mower (the kind with and extension cord) makes about 2hp. A battery mower is going to have a hard time achieving that without a whole bunch of battery aboard. My neighbor has an electric mower he uses to mow about 1/3 acre. He is unable to mow the entire thing on a single charge. So every day he mows for 20 minutes.
I get on my JD X304 and I have my 1 acre done in an hour. I'll keep my ICE. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at August 03, 2024 08:37 AM (2AW7/) 346

Posted by: Martini Farmer" The one I got for Mrs fd maybe 6 years ago uses lead acid batteries like in a UPS, 36 amps total. I've replaced them once for about $100. They are heavy though. It's good for her to use to trim the garden and such. Posted by: fd at August 03, 2024 08:40 AM (vFG9F) 352

I have a lot of Greenworks products for landscaping, the same battery for five years now. So I had no fear of buying the battery mower. It has space for two batteries, although both slots are not wired, only one. So I cut for about 35 minutes on the new 5.0 ah battery, then swap and get another 20 minutes on the older 4.0 ah battery. By then I've had enough. It's mainly an exercise thing for me. I'd rather walk around exercising behind a mower for an hour then stand on a treadmill for the same amount of time going nowhere doing nothing. Some might say it was dumb to pay off a 3.75 loan early, but I'm don't care. Not having that debt hanging over me was worth it.
Posted by: fd - I'm there with you. Not having car or house payments is a great mental thing, even while also knowing "I could be making and additional 0.73333333333% on this in the bank" Posted by: If Moron Robbie Plus the additional cash flow from not paying principal and interest. I have a very favorable interest rate and a very inexpensive mortgage payment but I still want to get it paid off which I'm working on right now. The tricky part for me is I make more money leaving the cash invested compared to what it costs me to have a mortgage. Which brings me right back to my first premise: cash flow. I have a mower that I've never gassed up. I bought it because the guy that mows my lawn hadn't shown up and I thought I'd have to start doing it. Then he showed up. He charges me $30 to do it with his zero turn.

*Biden boards hostage plane*
The truth is we don't know that he might have simply decided to go aboard and thank the pilot and crew. He walked up the stairs fairly briskly (without falling this time) and came down fairly briskly. There were plenty of people standing around watching to go retrieve him if he were doing something inappropriate (including Doug Emhoff's wife) and none of them did. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt this time. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 03, 2024 08:48 AM (dg+HA) 359

Watch DE's wife during the episode. She keeps smiling at Biden and turning her head around with a "I can't believe it" look on her face. In fact watch everyone's faces, it's a huge WTF? Biden just took one of his famous spontaneous little hikes to let everyone know he's so focused. Posted by: pawn at August 03, 2024 09:10 AM (QB+5g) 363
I have an extended family member who works for (used to?) Intel. More on the software side of things, though. Total brain in specialized field so can likely get hired by a competitor fast but they would have to bump someone else out of a senior position. (Sorry vague on details but must)

From what I understand, the investors are only barely aware of the Intel Raptor Lake problem and may be marginally aware of the legal hazard the foundry side openness itself up to. The 30% drop at this point appears to be mostly from their Arc disaster, losing market share and profit on the data center side and missing the AI hype train.
This is looking like the beginning of the blood bath, not the end of it. Posted by: Voyager at August 03, 2024 01:31 PM (nmL8W) 365

I suspect people who found the ad offensive thought that the Olympics opening ceremony was completely normal and appropriate. Posted by: Ralph at August 03, 2024 02:29 PM (TysyT) 367
Since Pixi asked, the "crush" add is the one where a bunch of old tech was placed in a giant crushing machine and squashed. Leaving an Ipad behind. The idea was the Ipad could do everything that stuff could do.
As I recall, several people where upset about this add. Even some people I thought would be above this. Apple apoligized 2 months ago. Posted by: doug at August 03, 2024 02:43 PM (eWTLq) 368
