4 Intel has entered the phase where it is a shrinking business. That they've managed to do it in a sector of the economy that seems to have unlimited demand Is a stunning feat of incompetence.

Boeing misinterpreted matters and decided somewhere along the line to be like Intel. If Elon Musk gets tapped to rescue the astronauts at the space station that's a PR problem that they may not be able to get past. Toss in all their other quality control problems and they too could become a shrinking business.

American industry. Building on incompetence for a better future.

5 The lives of 2 astronauts seems like a small price to pay to establish a DEI culture at Boeing.
I mean, unless you're 1 of those 2 astronauts, in which case it seems like a pretty fucking huge price to pay. But hey, eggs/omelets.

6 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers! 'Tis Friday at last. I've got a heat index now of 97 F., so I've done my calisthenics and stretches, and am now taking it easy in the cool of the window A/C. The trouble is, the weather won't be any better on Sunday or next week either. Maybe I'll have to do walking only -- which means longer sessions.

Anyway! What have you got planned for the weekend?

10 As I mentioned on the ONT, I have a couple of free copies of The Washington Examiner, which seems to be a conservative version of Time -- same glossy pages, same division of articles into categories, editorials, etc., but all with a R-positive spin. Anybody read it?

11 Today is Joe Bonamassa day in Albuquerque! A mere 3-hour drive from Las Cruces where I'll stop at Costco and load up on crap, get a bite to eat and go hear one of the greatest guitarists on the planet.

For the next 10 days in Las Cruces we're going to have highs of 102° and 75° for the lows. I'm hoping by mid-August the temperatures will start mitigating and if not in September they definitely will and everything will be perfect.

Our hundreds will be the heat index, which I know you don't have. On Weather Underground, the SW corner of Indiana, which I'm still looking at as a retirement bolthole, is having highs between 86-93 this next week. But by Sept., historically anyway, they will start seeing highs in the low 80s, and by October -- when I hope to drive up and actually see the place -- in the lower 70s. (In this dump it will still be 90 or close to it.)

66 I never considered that as Sec Trans, Bootyjuice is the Secretary of the Merchant Marine. Surprised he doesn't prance around in Admiral regalia.

Historically, Merchant Mariners have never received the same recognition as US Navy sailors. However, previous secretaries have awarded Merchant Marine Expeditionary and other medals to those in combat zones. These recognitions are crucial as they unlock federal burial benefits and are the first step for Merchant Mariners injured or killed in action to obtain VA benefits. Buttigieg’s refusal to issue awards, or even to take five minutes to thank these mariners in a video address, is denying them their hard-earned benefits.

95 Guys, the Starliner flight is a test flight. It wasn't supposed to be eight days, it was supposed to last until they finished the test card. The fact that they can remain docked at the ISS until the batteries run down means they have the luxury of time to gather data about the problems that they find, and they're going to find problems because DUH! It's a test flight! Finding problems is the purpose of the exercise.

All of the problems that they've found have to with the service module, which will be destroyed upon reentry. Since they're losing access to the parts that have the problem, they're gathering as much data as they can before returning to earth.

Look, there are a lot of things to criticize about Boeing's Starliner, but most everything you read about it in the news is just dumb.
