I'm too young to have any familiarity with tubes, but I have a faint recollection of seeing a testing table when I was a kid. I wonder whether there are any significant uses for tubes nowadays? Of course the stereophile lunatics duke it out all of the time over the burning question of whether tube amps are superior, but that is about as niche a use as I can imagine.

I remember using one of those tube testers at my local hardware store.
My dad was working on getting an old Zenith floor model radio working. I spent several interesting years listening to shortwave broadcasts on it. BBC, Radio Moscow, Radio Prague, Radio South Africa and Radio Berne from Switzerland. Lots of fun and pretty educational. Gave a remarkable perspective than the news on TV allowed.

Back in college (I'm 29, so this was around 1991) they used to have free outdoor concerts at noon on Wednesdays, and one day the Goo Goo Dolls played. I'd never heard of them and there were maybe 5 other people in the audience, so apparently nobody else had heard of them either. I thought they were fantastic. After school that day I went to Tower Records, bought their latest CD (Hold Me Up) and listened to it nonstop for about the next 6 months.
Then a few years later their next album came out, and my musical tastes had changed and I thought it was kind of meh, but that's when they started to get popular so what do I know.

Timing can be everything, Anna. If the eastern scout force had known about a IJN cruiser squadron in the area, they might have been in a pattern to catch Mikawa's force. Still, there might have been a chance, although a successful sighting & report might have been very hard luck for the DD. Might have been a better result than CA x4 in Iron Bottom Sound, though.

There's a theory that before a certain point, ad buys are basically worthless (to the extent that they matter at all). Maybe the idea is that with the Olympics, no one (aside from partisans; no one semi-persuadable) is really paying attention.
Then there's the DNC convention, which may reset things or be a dumpster fire.
There should be *some* counter-programming and pushback IMO, but I wouldn't expect the big offensive to occur until mid-September or so. You don't want to wait *too* long-- even setting early/absentee ballots aside (and the obvious , of fraud), people usually make up their minds well before Election Day. Timing is key, but of course a lot of it is guesswork and luck.
And, of course, the inevitable October Surprises, though it's unclear how much they really matter overall. A humdinger of a doozy could, I guess.

Trump has been more restrained the entire campaign season. I remember before the Biden debate people here were freaking out that Trump would be too aggressive and blow it. He was very restrained and let Biden blow himself up with just a few well placed throat punches.
Trump became a billionaire by marketing not constructing buildings. I expect he is happy to keep his powder dry and let the Harris campaign punch themselves in the face until he decides to use the massive war chest he has accumulated to finish the job.
Harris has completely botched her first decision, picking a VP, and it is hurting her campaign and Trump hasn't said a word and given the media any ammo to blame him.

99% of the time, a replacement tube in a radio or amplifier is a waste of time. What smokes vintage electronics is a defective power supply, many now expensive rectifier and audio output tubes are ruined this way. It is important to test for a shorted tubes, before operating a piece of equipment.
Tubes are pretty tough and reliable. They were used briefly for proximity fuses for artillery rounds, shot out of cannon. The Heathkit and Dynaco and McIntosh (and Collins) gear was outstanding, the height of the tube era before sand took over. Always wanted an R-390A

Yeah, aside from some kind of attack or other event, which are usually not what people think of as October Surprises. Usually they're some kind of scandal or opposition dump (like Bush's DUI).
Trump's already been vetted-- I assume there's nothing left to mine from his past, unless the Dems try to resurrect something that failed before. As far as Harris, Walz, or Vance-- in this day and age, there's no real incentive to delay any bombshell you might find. Maybe if something juicy happens to get uncovered, but as you say, it seems unlikely. Lookit all the stuff we've learned about Walz, who very very very few of us had even heard of before this week.

Those drugstore tube testers are pretty rudimentary. All they can do is measure cathode emission, and compare it to a standard. They cannot tell you if a tube will actually amplify. You need a mutual-conductance tube tester for that, which the TV service dudes all used.
Tubes are cool. Look into them, and you can practically see the electrons boiling off the cathode, navigating the maze of grids, and landing on the plate.

Anything old Western Electric - globe tubes - can be serious coin.
Russians and Chinese make reproductions for many of the audio output and rectifier tubes (which are subject to more rapid wear). Supposedly a few Japanese guys in the 1980s or 1990s armed with a rental van and phone book yellow pages criss crossed the US hitting up old TV repair shops buying up all the audio tubes they could find. Huge cult following for old electronics. Go figure.
Most vacuum tubes used in Television weren’t desirable then or now. Guitar amp tubes - and Stereos - some small signal tubes are desirable.

For those not familiar with getters, they are a type of vacuum pump made of a highly reactive metal alloy (Ti, ZrAl, etc.), that reacts with active gases. They'll pump down almost anything (O2, N2, H2O, CO2, etc.) except noble gases.

While the average tube-based, consumer-grade console were quite often mostly static-generators, with weak-framed, under magneted, thinly wired speakers and other "compromises" from the chassis up.
What made the "Silver Face" classic audio era (late '60s/all 70s/81~2, then finis), of Solid State circuitry, with real resistors, capacitors, huge transformers, toroidal chokes, discrete filtering circuits, etc... SO DAMN GOOD.
Not because they were better than the tube systems, but because you could buy one right off of the shelf, and it WORKED, and that, for a couple of decades or more.
Oh, and save for the Monster Receivers, most were affordable. More Hi-Fi, into more homes, than any era before or since. And just in time for the real Hi-Fi LPs, Dolby circuits and other niceties!

There is a round circuit board with the LED's in some series-parallel arrangement, with a (+) terminal and a (-) terminal. Last vintages I bought off of eBay were Azzaro Pour Homme EDT and Caron Yatagan. Listened to everyone rave about vintage Azzaro and finally got my hands on an old/new bottle. Gotta say it lives up to the hype. Wore several times this past winter. Same with the Yatagan.

I wear Yatagan a lot once the weather cools! Vintage is divine, but I find the newer stuff is still great and cheap! I mean, I haven't bought a bottle in a few years, but it used to be very reasonable on thd discount sites like FragranceNet.
The Azzaro is delicious on most people, but I have smelled it on a few that went very wrong. Not sure if it was a batch issue or body chemistry.

Well, to be fair, the solid-state stuff mostly does work better, if you get a quality product. Vacuum tubes need a lot of power to run. A five-tube table radio needs about 18 watts just to keep the filaments warm.

Well, initially, I applied power directly to the LED array, which is 40 diodes in some sort of series-parallel network. The regulator board says "2007", the date, and "10-30 volts DC". Once I had jumped the various dark diodes, they lit and stayed on, and when I switched the battery to the input of the driver board, it performed as it should...connect power to "stop" diodes light brightly, disconnect power, diodes go out, connect power to "tail" the diodes come on at reduced brightness. It's like the LED's just needed a jump start.

Heh. That is a benefit. Seeing as vacuum tubes normally run hot, they can sustain a massive overload for short period of time. Fair amount of thermal mass, and they can cool themselves by radiation.

Polynikes , yes, things can smell different . I personally think it's usually a matter of dry skin versus oily skin, freshly washed or not showered in a few days more than actual skin chemistry, but
many of my perfumes do smell completely different on one of my dearest friends than they do on me, especially the woody ones.
I wear Old Spice ( vintage) Grey Flannel ( also vintage) and especially Drakkar Noir and Geoffrey Beane ( yep, vintage) all the time come Winter.

I went to electronics school when tube equipment was being replaced by the transistor, so I learned about both. Yeah, knowledge about both was quickly obsolete because of micro circuitry, IE... integrated circuits. At least it taught me how to learn quickly if nothing else.
