Evening and morning to all you early risers and late toilers!
Pixy your first sentence is a classic of twisting a cliche's tail and making it squeal. Had a pretty decent night's sleep, and am sipping coffee and a morning pipe; it's my day off from workouts after two days running. (Pun not included. I walk more than I run, and even the run is kind of a trot nowadays.) What be happenin'? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 30, 2024 04:09 AM (omVj0) 4

Oh, and I received my copies of the anthology, All Will Burn: At All Costs from Raconteur Press with my short story in it. It is truly astonishing to see your own writing in a professional paperback. ("Did I really write that? Wow.")
Now I have to read all the others in the collection to get some more idea of what RP wants in their anthologies. There's a current call for submissions, and I have several stories that might fit it. But I need to see what they actually accept in practice. A different editor, of course, may have different tastes, but I can but try. Elon Musk reposted a parody video of Kamala Harris and the usual suspects are rioting. Virtually. I'm so old I remember when the left supported parody. You see, Jerry Falwell was some sort of religious figure who got a lot of press. Larry Flynn published a magazine that a lot of people would consider pornographic. Flynn published something nasty about Falwell and Falwell sued. The US Supreme Court eventually ruled that the piece was parody and free speech. The left went orgasmic in delight. Hilarious when a SovCit in Ireland spouts US laws or US Constitution items which have no bearing there. 'Probable Cause' in the UK would elicit a Huh? There it is 'a reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed.' -- Sovereign citizens/moorish/mornish/ nationals/whatever sobriquet I would enjoy for once a cop or a judge to say: 1. If our laws don't pertain to you then why are you quoting various USSC cases? 2. Read all those rulings right through - they don't mean what you think they mean. 3. There were no cars when the Constitution was written and signed. That word 'travel' refers to 'on foot'. 4. Visitors to our land (hence non-citizens) have to comply with all US Laws, Federal, State, County and City. If you are a non-citizen then you are just like a visitor. I do agree on one thing: Being detained (often in cuffs) is the same as arrested, regardless of what the cops say. But these people keep me amused specially the fee schedules and the questionnaire they hand the cops. Posted by: Ciampino - I'm traveling NOT DRIVING! at July 30, 2024 05:50 AM (qfLjt) 87

I have never been approached by a police officer except for one time when some creep was skulking around the back yards of my neighborhood and the tracks in the snow went right around my house, and he was asking if our doorbell camera caught anything. It didn't, really, but hey, thanks for looking at least.

Sadly, not true: Former Attorney General Eric Holder and his law firm, Covington & Burling LLP, will conduct vetting of potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for the US presidency, sources say. . . His involvement in the vetting process may reassure Democrats a longtime political and legal hand is helping to ensure Harris’ pick, should she win the nomination, is free of major conflicts. Holder is a civil rights advocate and chairs the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which works to oppose Republican gerrymandering – efforts by politicians to redraw voting maps in US states to give their party an advantage. Kamala introduce the coconut theme into discussion herself:
But what does a coconut tree have to do with Harris? It goes back to May 10, 2023. That day, Harris spoke at a swearing-in ceremony.... "None of us just live in a silo. Everything is in context," she continued. "My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes — and she would say to us, 'I don't know what's wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." >>Look up "Kamala coconut tree speech."
Ah, thanks! The “coconut tree” meme originates from a May 2023 speech Harris gave at a White House event for advancing opportunities for Hispanic Americans. . . "Everything is in context," Harris said, before launching into the now-famous anecdote. "My mother ... would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, 'I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' " Harris said with a laugh. "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." The moment was first meme’d in earnest in February of this year, when for a period of time, one could not open X, formerly known as Twitter, without seeing clips of or oblique references to those remarks. Sounds. . . forced. Astroturfed. Posted by: Lizzy at July 30, 2024 06:35 AM (Pijte) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 30, 2024 06:35 AM (8ZJJb) 131
I feel like we live in a different world than this people:
But the meme took on new life this summer, after President Biden’s disastrous debate performance fueled speculation that he might step aside as the Democratic nominee. Harris’ supporters, also known as the KHive, were waiting in the wings. Since then, the moment has been remixed into Charli XCX’s “Von Dutch” and Britney Spears’ "Gimme More." Democratic operatives have spoken of being “coconut-pilled.” The meme flourished into 2028 debate fan fiction. Google searches for "coconut tree" started climbing in the U.S. in early July. Like all of us, the coconut tree moment exists in the context of all in which it lives and what came before it. Which is to say, it’s part of a larger set of memes surrounding Kamala Harris’ political persona. Harris has been spawning memes longer than she’s been vice president. We Did It, Joe, is likely the most well-known. But her laugh, her bus, her dance moves and her love of Venn diagrams have all become social media fodder. OK, the fact that the coconut meme has been mixed into pop star songs is a huuuuuge tell that this has been planted. Posted by: Lizzy at July 30, 2024 06:38 AM (Pijte) 132
