When you look into Mozart, he's really a funny guy. His operas, the popular 'show' of the day, with cheap seats for the hoi polloi at the theater, poked fun at the very peerage who were his patrons. The audience would roar in laughter at the digs to the elite 'sitting in the front row'.

In the weeks after the debate the bottom dropped out of Biden polling. The numbers were so bad that no strategy could recover to get him close enough to cheat.

This same polling showed that while she was still losing, there was still a narrow path for Harris. That she polled slightly better in GA and AZ, while losing WI and MI. So while it is still drawing an inside straight, winning GA, AZ, and PA would get her over 270. If they caught a break along with the normal structural advantages they have, she could get to 274 by the skin of her teeth.
I still don't buy it, but now I understand the logic. Ultimately this is a game of avoiding a down ballot landslide, and maybe getting lucky.
I sm now very skeptical of those Fox polls.

I'm watching the Olympic opening stuff with a very critical eye. So far I've seen only boats and happy athletes and lady Gaga. The color theme is that really vibrant fuscia. I've seen a cabaret theme permeating performances. I've not seen the trannys or the blasphemous Last Supper.
Is NBC editing that out for the evening broadcast or have they not shown it yet?

I forget the whole context of Harris" " I was that little girl" speech, but obviously the picture from her campaign is supposed to remind one of the little girl being escorted to school under desegregation .
I consider this, the historical version of " Stolen valor". She isn't that little girl. She'd be too young and that woman had a real name which isn't Kamala Harris. In addition, she grew up in Canada not in the US. I don't think her campaign team is very smart.
Also, I understand the implication of Harris as an adult but in that picture she looks like she's praying. Maybe Harris is religious but I think it's more likely her god is the strange one of progressive politics

Of course this is touted as great news for Harris, since Biden was down 6 in the same poll.
The problem is that if that CNN poll is correct on election day, that is Trump winning 343 electoral votes. He would win all the battlegrounds plus VA, MN, and ME state. We would be counting late into the night in NM and NH.

In English, verse is often (not always) expected to rhyme. English is unusual in this.
Other languages are about meter, and word-play, which does not always translate well to English.
You can translate verse into English rhyme and meter, while losing the word-play and even the main sense of the writer.

Federico Garcia Lorca had been playing with bringing the English style foot into Spanish poetry, which traditionally was a syllabic type poetry meter. IIRC my Spanish lit prof described it as a way to break from what was becoming to be considered Spain's obsolete traditions that were dragging it down under centuries of past decisions. I can't remember if he was considered one of the "generation of '98" writers or one of the second wave of the movement.
Thank you Miklos, I know we disagree on economics, but it is nice to have a reason to remember those courses in Spanish Lit.

And I fixed a flat tire on the Dixon mower. Well the tire that was flat had reached end of life. Rips in the sidewalls, exposing the tube. One such rip had allowed a patch to peel off the tube, letting it go flat. Well that tire had to go. Removed it, found a pair of old mower wheels in the barn; tires one size bigger. Patched the tube, mounted one of the "new" tires, and aired it up. Swapped out the other tire, since tire diameters have to match. "Damn!" The patched tube went flat again. Busted the tire off the rim one one side, dragged out the tube, peeled off the failed patch, did it again. Seems to be holding now. Drove mower into barn.

That wasn't his only offensive, swear-filled song or example of being a dick to a singer, and in fact he combined both into one song another time. There was a tenor with a really strong accent that he screwed with by making Latin that, when spoken in that accent, sounded kind of like German swearing. So it looked perfectly fine up until he started singing....
