I bet there's going to be a developing crisis with this fetishization of "intelligence", too. Intelligence is ultimately not much more than pattern recognition. There's far more to humanity than our ability to put square pegs in square holes. There's discernment, "empathy" (for lack of a better word), etc etc. Raw intelligence stripped out from the rest of humanity is like saying that we know a cake has baking powder in it, so if we can synthesize baking powder in a lab and eat a spoonful of it it'll be the tastiest, cakiest cake you've ever had.
And now everyone is chomping on their spoonful of horrid awfulness and grimmacing out an exuberant "Mmmmm tasty" because they spent a billion dollars making it and need to sell the snake powder somehow to salvage this whole stupid fiasco. Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 25, 2024 04:22 AM (BAEGB) 17

I'll bet there's some interesting sociological parallels to the rise of mechanical technology in the 19th c.
Sure, machines are awesome and amazing. From modern assembly robots all the way back to steam powered jacquard looms. It's amazing what you can do with a little innovation and cleverness and luck. But the spasmodic pop-culture dream that human labor would be completely replaced by robots was always nonsense. Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 25, 2024 04:27 AM (BAEGB) 23

If you buy a book at the bookstore, you own it. You can take it home, scribble in the margins, put in on the shelf, lend it to a friend, sell it at a garage sale. But is the same thing true for the ebooks or other digital goods you buy? Retailers and copyright holders argue that you don't own those purchases, you merely license them. That means your ebook vendor can delete the book from your device without warning or explanation—as Amazon deleted Orwell's 1984 from the Kindles of surprised readers several years ago. Evening and morning to all again!
We have a 60% chance of rain today, which may knock the high to a dizzying low of 88, and about the same tomorrow. But tomorrow's rain may come in the early morning. Then, for the weekend, back up to 90-92. Stirling and Dagny have been fed, and so have I. Two more days to slog through. Have a genuine tech question here...
Do ANY search engines allow the use of boolean anymore? I have tried just about everything, and nothing seems allow exclusionary terms or anything that would "tighten" a search. Google claims that using "" is better than using +, but even that doesn't work. What is the reason for this seemingly industry wide step backwards? Posted by: Taft at July 25, 2024 06:06 AM (D5zge) Somehow, they always want to broaden the search results. I wonder if it is so people who have no idea what they are really looking for and cannot spell might get something that makes them want to click on an ad at least. You end up essentially explaining what you are saying in a search. I was looking for the 'longest service rifles' and ended up having to use 'longest production rifles by length' to even get a reddit post that seemed to know what the hell I was looking for. Do ANY search engines allow the use of boolean anymore?
What is the reason for this seemingly industry wide step backwards? Posted by: Taft' Not really, and it's industry-wide. I've noticed it in Archive, where search terms that previously brought results now don't. As for why, I assume: illiterate users, which really started with 'smart'-phones when any doltish fat-fingered retard could get on the internet; and, I note, the overwhelming majority of people I work with and know don't even use typed-in search, they use the voice inquiry exclusively. The other part I think is 1) ad-clicks, and 2) control of information. Posted by: LenNeal at July 25, 2024 06:53 AM (bFId9) 139
Yandex is pretty good for searches but, to really use it well, it requires Russian input! Which is a little cumbersome when looking for something arcane or using specific technical terms. It doesn't like misspellings, it's not as self-correcting as say Google.
I miss Alta Vista. That was my favorite search engine. Posted by: LenNeal at July 25, 2024 06:55 AM (bFId9) 140
