The Saturday Night Joke

A man is laying in the hospital, waiting to be the first person in history to receive a brain transplant.

A doctor comes in and says, "Congratulations! But unfortunately, since this is a new procedure, your insurance isn't going to cover it all. So we're going to give you 3 choices for brains and you can decide which you can afford."

The man says to the doctor, "Okay, what are they?"

The doctor says, “Well, first there's the engineer brain, that's $100 an ounce. Then there's the astrophysicist brain, that'll cost you $200 an ounce. Finally, there's the politician brain. That's the most expensive at $1000 an ounce."

The man looks at the doctor, surprised… “that's absurd! Why is the politician brain so expensive?"

The doctor turns to him and says, “Sir, do you have any idea how many politicians it takes to get an ounce of brain?" (H/T Hrothgar)

I've never heard of the following restaurant let alone eat at one. I have no idea if they are top 10 material or not.

Del Taco has been named by USA TODAY as America's No. 1 fast food restaurant, ending Chick-fil-A's nearly decade run as the top chain.

The Mexican restaurant chain was selected by readers as the nation's best, followed by KFC and Chick-fil-A.

"This popular taco stop, which serves all kinds of satisfying Mexican fare including burritos, quesadillas, and nachos, also offers burgers and fries. In addition, Del Taco has a dedicated breakfast menu, as well as a vegan and vegetarian menu," USA TODAY wrote.

Del Taco, which is based in California. is reported to have 594 total locations in just 18 U.S. states. USA TODAY's full list of America's top 10 best fast food restaurants is included below:

I suppose if QDPSteve were lurking he would know.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Eulogy Emporium

John Mayall was a great musician. And many of his band mates went onto bigger stardom such as Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. RIP John Mayall.

I received the following note earlier this week.

MH,

John Mayall has passed. The NY Times wrote a lovely obit about Mr. Mayall.

He truly was a Blues and Rock and Roll titan.

I first encountered him through the Bluesbreakers with Clapton album. My friends and I literally wore out few copies of it while learning the music. It was life changing and became a musical anchor point over the decades.

Many years later, when I was living in downtown Seattle in a small studio apartment, I would often walk to Jazz Alley to hear many memorable musicians such Chick Corea, Dr. John, Christian McBride, and of course, Mr. Mayall. It was a lovely venue, two tiers, all seats up close or on top of the bands. The audiences were all smart, civil, and knew their stuff - the exact opposite of drunk shitheads that go to clubs and arenas and spend their entire time watching the show through their cell phones.

Mr. Mayall came through every June or July for 4 nights, 2 show each night, and I made it a point to hit a show a day, sometimes both. Over the years I lived there and before I moved to New Mexico, I must have seen him 20 times. The bands were always tight as hell and during each set there would be moments of stunning greatness where everything fell apart, got loose, stopped being music, and become pure sound energy that reached right into you – Mayall got that out his bands, it was stunning.

The Jazz Alley merch table was located right where patrons would enter the main floor. Each night before the show, there would be Mr. Mayall at the merch table, his mind a million miles away with his eyes blank, until somebody would come up, far fewer that you would expect, and he would then instantly spring to life. He would personally sell them a CD, autograph it, have a few nice words, take a pic with the fan and as soon as they left, he would revert to that other state. I came to love watching that part of the show and sometimes I would hang back in the shadows soaking in those moments.

I only approached him one time at the merch table, and it was to thank him for that album, how I wore out a few copies as a youth, how it completely changed how I thought about blues and rock and roll, and that I still pull it out with some regularity. Instead of snapping to life as I have explained he sort of pulled back, slightly shocked, slightly not sure what to do, he then said, “you don’t want a picture with me?” I replied, “Mr. Mayall, not needed, I am just happy to have had this moment to share with you how much I have appreciated your work over the decades, and that I get to come to Jazz Alley every night you are in Seattle.” He didn’t directly reply, instead he looked down for a moment in thought, paused for a few seconds, and then his head came up and uttered, to me, the ever-immortal words, “It did have some energy, didn’t it?” I agreed, shook his hand and found my seat.

About mid-way through that set, he stopped to discuss that next song was one he hadn’t played for a live audience for decades and that he hoped we wouldn’t mind listening to something that old. He then counted off, 1, 2, 3, 4 and the band launched into a blistering extended version of “All Your Love” from that album. It was then my turn came to be shocked and not sure what to do; I do recall having a few tears right there on the main floor at Jazz Alley, a couple tables back from the band. That is the only time he ever called a tune off that album in all the shows I got attend. It was a moment.

Great live performance can be like that.
Regards,

Altaria Pilgram, formerly known as the artist, Lost in Space.

That is a phrase, like "leftover bacon," "illegal knife," or "Marxist government" that should not only have never been coined in any language, but should also be totally alien to human capacity to create. 78 The Last Supper insult was a sideshow. People seem to be unaware that what they were doing was recreating a Dionysiun drunken orgy, with a little girl right in the middle of it, standing next to a guy with his junk hanging out, while ol' Dionysius himself was on the other side of her, wearing nothing but blue paint and some garlands of fake flowers, singing a song about being naked.

In all fairness, they are now claiming that what looks like testicles is merely a rip in the guys tights, and that may be true. But we still have the little child in the middle of an homage to orgies.

Then of course we had the little tableau of 3 bizarrely dressed characters, cleary strangers to each other, who meet in the library and go off to have a threesome, shutting the door to the apartment as they start groping each other and the two guys start kissing.

Can't imagine why anyone was offended by any of that!

81 Don't expect Christians to act like muslims when insulted. That's not happening. God will punish sinners. That's how it works. Modern Christianity is a mess. Dead in Europe, mostly dead in America, but not completely dead. There are churches that still preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world, which is the Great Commission. It's not going to get easier for Christians from this point forward. What the IOC allowed in France is the norm now. Persecution will increase. Prepare accordingly. What you see around you is explained in Romans 1:18-32.

86 Word is, the IOC hired a radical homo activist to come up with that opening ceremony

I think it is part of a concerted effort by the unhumans to destroy the West, and by putting this propaganda out there for the entire non-Western world to see is deliberate.

The Islamic world can point to this utter depravity and justify their continued assaults to save the world from these infidels, the BRICS nations can be encouraged that their main economic competitors are self-destructing and nations on the fence who are debating on whether to hedge their bets on China or the West are seeing this cultural rot and the drive towards violent totalitarian Marxism and looking at China as the better option.

I stopped watching the Olympics 40 years ago because it was no longer about sports but an endless series of emotional stories of the athletes. If I wanted that, I would subscribe to the Hallmark Channel.

88 81 Don't expect Christians to act like muslims when insulted.

He has smoothly pivoted to hitting Kamala where it hurts, without missing a beat. He calls her Border Czar Kamala.

Also noted he did Kirk's faith conference in Palm Beach last night, Bitcoin this afternoon, and University of Minnesota tonight. Harris was at a senior center in Philadelphia with 60 attendees.

He is smoking her.

He's also right up front saying the Dems are going to rig the election, if you don't vote they are going to cheat.

Many people in the West are at Stage IV reprobation, all that follows is death.

Dr Jason Lyle wrote an apologetic that posited that God is the quelle of wisdom, logic and reason.

For me, I extrapolated that with Romans 1 such that at each "turning over" the miseotheist distances himself from the Divine and thus is further removed from wisdom, logic and reason.

Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat "whom the Gods wish to destroy they first make insane."

And those who are most easily assumed to be demon possessed sound insane when they speak.

For those here who are not Catholic/Orthodox, the Eucharist is e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. to them. It's the culmination of every Mass service. Priests have been known to break into their burning churches and retrieve not the valuables, not even the Bibles but the consecrated Host.

135 The Last Supper insult was a sideshow.

157 When I lived in Rio Rancho New Mexico we had a Del Taco around the corner from where I lived. I used to go there all the time when they had the value tacos on sale. They were like $0.79 each. I called them the old people meal deal. Then I moved to Las Cruces and apparently we can't have nice things here but Alamogordo can. It's not fair. They're only 1/3 size the Las Cruces. So the last time I went through Alamogordo which I try to avoid cuz they're just punks over there I stopped in at the Del Taco and they got rid of the value tacos old people meal deal. I've been depressed ever since and I blame my heavy drinking on this.

224 Not sure if anyone saw this since it went on the open thread really late.

Decision Desk (yes, Meathead's place, but they have a really good poll aggregation methodology) posted a table of state poll results before and after the switch. It show that Harris is getting very little improvement over Biden.

Nationally there is no change, she picked up 2 in Georgia, 1 in Arizona, and one in Pennsylvania. That's it.

But remember this is compared to Biden's numbers AFTER the debate and after the assassination attempt.

If you compare to his numbers BEFORE the debate, she is a shitshow.

So they did a hail mary debate to try to get back into a race they thought they were losing, blew up their entire nomination process, and wasted 5 weeks of the campaign just to end up worse than where they started.

They would literally have been better off hiding Biden in the basement until November.

The age of the bull doesn't matter. Leftists love recycling.

It's of a piece with everything else they did, Trans Supper onwards. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but if it's found in a box of dildos, expect Bill Clinton.

273 I don't do tacos at home, I do burritoes. Talk about easy. Make a seasoned meat filling (I use beef or pork), mash up a can of Goya red beans adding seasoning, add sour cream, grated cheese and roll up in a tortilla. Other additions are optional; mine is sliced black olives.

Buying burritoes, like tacos, is a waste.

I agree with the earlier comment: I buy things out I can't make at home. Since I don't fry at home, that leaves a lot of other options than tacos or burritoes.

Kind of funny how that cartoon changed the culture. Everybody thinks rabbits are addicted to carrots because of that cartoon, when it was added to specifically parody Clark Gable in It Happened One Night.

Also, "nimrod" is now pretty much synonymous with "loser" these days because people didn't get the reference to the biblical Hunter when Bugs saw Elmer in his hunter's gear and called him "the great Nimrod."

371 EvrR - Nevada I believe. Governor is now Republican.

Arizona is interesting, the entire election infrastructure R and D are under investigation, as is Abortion Mouse (for election fraud no less).

But with Trump over 51% there it's not going to be a problem for him. Lake will have a problem though, they are going to cheat like hell to make her lose.

But after that with NV, AZ, and GA, Trump is at 268.

NE CD-2 gets him to the tie. PA, MI, WI or statewide ME gets him over 270. Dems have said outright they don't like their chances in MI, and Whitmer best outcome from the election is for Harris to lose. That makes her most likely to be 2028 nominee.

And don't discount Whitmer in 2028, she is more formidable than most realize.

So your argument is that it does not matter whether or not something is constitutional? That force majeure and will to power is the only conditioning elements on legality? This is an odd position to take.

I don't think you would like where that leads. As a definition it doesn't appear to hold water since you don't seem to be able to tell me the difference between the current Fed system of creating money via debt and the gold standard, though I suspect you will try to work in a definition of "the velocity of money" as well as a discussion on the evils or benefits of a bimetallic monetary regime as a cautionary parable to support your explanation.

If—
By Rudyard Kipling
(‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

My international travels are decades ago, Canada, Argentina and Japan (as a Boy Scout), well before the deliberate global population redistribution to bankrupt the First World. Reparations.

As a kd, Japan was astounding! That was '71. I found Montreal to be lovely when I went. I also enjoyed The Maritimes (Halifax), taking the car ferry to and from Maine. Buenos Aires is beautiful. It's called The Paris of South America for a reason. Though I might add, with the crazy paint jobs on some of the smaller buildings, there's a touch of the color of Ancient Rome, too, though that paint has long since faded. (We marvel at the beauty of those old marble statues, how pristine and captivating they are. But they would have had a serious paint job when they were made. The Romans didn't live a monochrome life.)

People love to talk about cryptocurrencies as the future and to me they are far from it.

For here's the thing: people are desperate to overcomplicate things. But truth of the matter is that no matter how much you hate central banks, the Fed, or whatever, people still use the dollar because People Like Using it. It's not rockey science. And money is JUST a medium of exchange, nothing more.

If people are unwilling to go along with changes to currency, it will not happen. Not even NORTH KOREA could do currency reform. Yes, they tried, and yes, they failed.

If people find they like cryptocurrencies and like using them, and other people like taking them for payment, and people understand fully how it works, it has a future. Not until then.

eh, you can be debanked tomorrow if anyone cared, and your account can be hacked and cleaned out if you have dollars and Euros, too. If there is a CBDC that really does mean your money is not yours. As it is right now, most of the money in circulation is not real bills and coins, it is digital entries on databases handled in a system that is supposed to be high trust, by actors who are very influenced by political whims. "Safe as money in the bank" has a different connotation to a Canadian Trucker Protester today.

I don't know what bug is up catch thirty-tr33s nose, but the definition of money is more to do with being a store of value and it to be universally transferable. Bitcoin and to a lesser extent Etherium seem to have the first part down, just as much as IBM stock does. You can use them in a limited way to transfer and exchange value. but cash is easier for the moment. Where there is an exchange available, crypto is faster than a bank transfer.

540 when I said that Crypto would do to banking what email did to telegraphs, telephone and postal services is that thing about the ease of transfer of value. Instead of giving it to the bank or Western Union to hold for 2-5 days to verify and then credit it to a ledger to a distant bank, the crypto goes peer-to-peer on a shared ledger. This is why we send texts instead of post cards today, and when we send post cards it is for a very different reason that why we sent then in 1999.
El Salvador is an interesting test case, it seems to work but not the way it is supposed to. El Salvador is terribly undercapitalized away from the main cities, and there are no banks. Everything was being done in physical dollars or barter because the local currencies were trash and dollars held value better. No financial infrastructure means everything is done by barter and IOUs in a low trust environment. Crypto takes the need to trust out of the system - The risk the money is no good is the same as before, but there is no need to trust a faceless banker in San Salvador who is a thief.
Nothing is perfect in Central America, but it seems to be less worse, and it might get better.

590 Marie Antoinette is much maligned, horribly so. It's very sad. And her death goes to my point about the innate barbaric nastiness that seems to infest French culture now and then. The 18th century is too modern a time for them to be dragging women through the streets and chopping their heads off. I realize the guillotine was meant to be more humane, but those bastards went beyond crazy with that shit. They could have exiled her, and the others.

You get the dollar backed by gold once more, and Bretton Woods make s a comeback, etc. You get upset over "fiat corrency" yet you are more than willing to turn over the control of the value of currency to the gold market. Which I would argue is just as "fiat" in a real sense as you throw the currency to the tender mercies of the gold market.

The mimes are part of this, I think. They puzzle and unsettle Werner. Yet can it be in your land that fuzzy happiness that is the cat, beloved of the Egyptians and worshipped by them as the Goddess Bast, has been married with the use of firearms?

How do they wield such implements? I doubt not their intelligence or their willfulness, but lacking an opposable thumb must impair their aim, if not also the discharge of their weapon. Which would be tiny and cute. Oh, kitten, that tool of death with which you disport yourself is adorable. Who's a lethal kitty. You're a lethal kitty. Werner has a treat for you. Partake not, though, of the catnip. We do not want to impair kitten's trigger discipline. Hypothetical and figurative cat, shall I name you Goethe, or Commander Star-Sprinkle? Is this dark? 651 ARiK, Insty has a link to a tweet making the claim, with a picture of Sacre Coeur lit up while the building in front of it is dark. Have you seen otherwise?

654 637 The French revoltinaries did terrible things to nuns and priests during the revolution, and desecrated churches in obscene ways. Very ugly chapters in their history, all the way back. All countries do, of course, but the French seem to have this weird dichotomy of great artistic achievement parallel with horrendous behavior.

I have to wonder what disgusting spectacle they have planned for the closing ceremony.

655 Del Taco has a couple nice cheap things on their menu, but a lot of the rest is just garbage. They also serve fries for some reason, and they aren't even good. It's more of a Burger King/ Jack in the Box tier fast food. Zero chance it actually belongs on a top ten.

The whole list has to be incredibly suspect, given there's almost never a single car in line at a Del Taco, meanwhile every In-n-Out usually has 10+ cars in line plus tons more people inside at all times.

Know that they are French, and that thus it will be preciously twee and annoying, as well as an affront to nature. Watch it not, for it encourages them, and they begin to think they are people. See it not, for once seen, it cannot be unseen. I will cover the eyes of Commander Star-Sprinkle, my hypothetical kitty, that their debauchery does not impair his feline innocence. Werner has seen too much of Froggy exhibitionism and the cognac was definitely over-indulged.

658 Our money is backed by the country.
Our country is Exxon, Texaco, Chevron, Microsoft, Tesla, 3M, Nvidia and on and on. All of these companies are part of Full faith and Credit. All of them are in dollars and they aren't going to let the dollar fold. Most of the country is invested - has ownership in these companies. It's not fiat as long as these companies exist. I thought I was supposed to hate Microsoft because Windows 11 supposedly sucks balls.

660 When I stopped drinking North Dakota’s average beer consumption dropped by half, if Jim stops Mormans will have some competition.

661 There was a Del Taco on my Navy base 30+ years ago. After the first time I ate there, the only reason I went back (and that was only a handful of times) was because it was a short walk from the barracks and was open late. I have never gone to one again since I moved to off-base housing. So if I was hungry, it was basically the only option. It was entirely mediocre. So, unless the chain has made a massive transformation, it is inconceivable to me that it ranks in the Top 25, much less #1. It's better than Church's Chicken, but that's about it.
