meltdown.jpg

Airline/air space meltdowns have happened before, and they will happen again. USA Today published a timely article in May, 2023 with some helpful tips about how to survive a meltdown should be unlucky enough to get caught in one.

Another airline service meltdown is coming. It's not a question of "if," but "when" it will happen. And this one could make last holiday's airline problems look like a minor delay.

Well, buckle up Horde! Here we go!

Summer, 2011--SPIRIT:

"Spirit has canceled more than 2,000 flights since Sunday due to a combination of staffing shortages, bad weather and technology problems."

Winter, 2022--Southwest:

"Southwest Airline's cascading failures have checked a veritable bingo card of travel nightmares. And while every airline faced bad weather and cancellations last week, only Southwest fell apart."

Summer, 2023--United :

"In short, Kirby traces the issue back to bad weather at Newark Airport (EWR) that limited flight operations, causing a domino effect of disruption across the system. Let’s take a look at the specifics:"

Winter 2023—The FAA:

“Our preliminary work has traced the outage to a damaged database file. At this time, there is no evidence of a cyberattack...The FAA said Thursday evening that the data file “was damaged by personnel who failed to follow procedures.”

Summer, 2024—Delta:

"With so many planes and crews now out of position, and the system used to schedule them still languishing, it's questionable whether Delta will be a reliable airline by the weekend, Potter said."

The Great Meltdown du jour

It should be obvious that the first three involved weather among other issues. On Friday July 19, Crowd Strike pushed one bad line of C++ code to worldwide workstations using Crowd Strike's security software. The weather was not a factor. Pixy has provided some great explanations and links about this disaster.

My son is a software engineer, and he complains about how companies never seem to put enough value on the QA devs who test all code before publishing. He did note that one of the bigwigs at CS came from McAfee--remember that "essential software" that would mostly suck all your computer's resources? Also, CS laid off 200 employees earlier this year. So, accident? Purposeful, like sabotage? "Press to Test" for the literal Great Rest? We likely will never know.

What we do know is that Delta was the goat this time (Note, not as in the "Greatest of all Time" GOAT.). Other carriers recovered relatively quickly but Delta dug itself a hole within the first hours. By not cancelling enough flights soon enough, the whole dispatch system "bricked". Combine that with all the workstations locked in BSOD, nothing could be done to move any aircraft or crews anywhere.

Flights that were not cancelled stayed in the system and piled up to the point where nothing could be pushed through. Dispatchers, load planners, crew scheduling could only stare at the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) until an IT person rebooted the system, workstation by thousands of workstations*. Gate agents were able to process some passengers if they remembered their "DeltaTerm" language, which is basically DOS commands. But, there were no crews to man the jet, if the jet was even there. And even if the jet and the crew were there, there was no way to generate the dispatch release, flight plan or load plan.
*Actually, I saw an estimated 8.5 million workstations worldwide.

Like most major airlines, and service companies in general, procedures to cope with major service disruptions are created. In defense of Delta, the blizzard of 1993 initiated, at no small investment, the creation of their Operations Control Center. If you haven’t seen it, take my word for it, it rivals NORAD. Delta has been very good at anticipating problems and irregular operations by proactively “thinning” the schedule to help protect the schedule and, therefore, the passengers. But, in defense of Delta’s ops folks, it's hard to manage airplanes, crews and passengers if you are the person responsible and you are looking at a blue screen of death. This creates the question applicable to all of us: what's your plan B when the system goes down?

Delta will recover at a huge cost and maybe some learning is occurring concurrent with the loss of revenue and customer loyalty. But in the meantime, it's not a good look. Like Delta 9994 was supposed to go to Air Venture on July 23rd. It was to show off the TEAM USA livery.

teamUSA.jpg

Oh well, Air Venture 2025, here we come!

remember.jpg

The Great Political Meltdown: Now it seems the demokkkrats have openly endorsed assassination as party policy. They will strive to gain total control of the government so they may escape any accountability. If you think the "cheat" was big in 2020, you haven't seen anything yet. I'm thinking that we should just do away with elections. We'll just make whoever grifts the most money out of donors the winner. What do ya think?

Speaking of meltdowns: bye, bye, Kimmie .

[slightly edited] “I have, and will always put the [DEI] needs of this agency first. In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director,” Cheatle wrote in the letter,".[Besides, they have just finished my anchor desk at MSNBC.]

More melting! So much melting! Can I mention the opening ceremony? The creators literally invoked Revelation 6:8. Now of course they deny any religious connotation but we know what they are up to. And, amusingly, the "City of Light" became the City of Some Light. At least the horse seemed well illuminated.

parishorse.jpg

As one poster noted though, the athletes were not part of the design process. Boycott or support as you see fit.

The Military Meltdown from CDR. Salamander:
How is the Red Sea Fight Going?

"So, in essence, we’ve expended all of 2022, 2023, and part of 2021’s procurement in just nine months."
Against. A. Sub-4th Rate. Non-state. Actor.
As the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, General Michael Kurilla, USA, recently sent a classified memo to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warning that the strategy to stop the Houthis’ disruption of shipping routes is “failing.” (Well, it's online so I guess it's not that classified.)

Kurilla...hmm…there can't be too many guys with that name walking around. I wondered, and thanks to Al Gore's amazing interwebs, I remembered a Michael Yon post from another war ago:

Gates of Fire

“I’m hit three times! I’m shot three times!”
"With his leg mangled, Kurilla pointed and fired his rifle into the doorway, yelling instructions to the soldiers about how to get in there. "

Here is then Col. Kurilla in 2005 in Mosul, returning fire after having his femur shattered by a 7.62x39 bullet.
kurilla.jpg

You should read the whole post. Yon has had his ups and downs during his wild career, but this was one of his better dispatches from the war zone.

Here's an interview if you are so inclined: Q&A with Michael Yon.

Stay frosty, Horde! No melting!

29 I was caught in the CrowdStrike Delta meltdown. Delta cancelled our flight at 9pm Saturday night for a 5:30am flight the next day out of a smaller airport, Missoula MT. We thought we were golden when we made it through Saturday and we received the email about checking in. Of course you couldn’t get through to them by phone and their online reservation service was a mess. We booked a replacement that would have left 2 days later and seriously shortened our vacation. Next morning I stayed on hold for 4 plus hours and finally spoke with an agent. To be continued

Delta made it work, gave hubby nec and I 25,000 air miles as compensation. I know that they had to give hotel and food vouchers to those stranded and have a plan in place for you to request reimbursements for hotels, rental cars, etc. How this doesn’t cost them millions is a mystery to me. I’m amazed that they could have alleviated some of the mess.

58 Some news from the day:

1) looking strongly like Harris will pick Shapiro to try to win PA. This makes some sense since there is no scenario where Harris gets to 270 without PA.

2) second choice is Tim Walz, who Obama is pushing hard for. Interesting to me since no one is considering Minnesota to be anything but a blue state this time around. If we are discussing MN on election night being close, it will because we are seeing how far over 300 Trump will go.

3) Rasmussen posted their latest poll. Trump leads 50/43. Hitting 50 is generally a major benchmark since there is no way to get undecideds and make up ground. In 2020, Rasmussen final poll was Biden 48/47.

4) WSJ posted their latest poll. Trump leads 48/46. WSJ final poll in 2020 was Biden 52/42.

I'm thinking of buying stock in paper mills, Dems are going to need a lot of fake ballots.

5) Video dropped by Harris fanboys of the line to get into Harris event in Henderson NV. The line is about 30-40 people long. The commentary about how MAGA should be afraid was amusing.

STATEMENT
following the sacrileges and scandals
of the Paris Olympic Games

It is no coincidence that the one sponsoring this revolting carnival is an emissary of the World Economic Forum, Emanuel Macron, who passes off a transvestite as his own wife with impunity, just as Barack Obama is accompanied by a muscular man in a wig. It is the reign of mystification, of falsehood, of fiction erected as a totem, in which man is disfigured precisely because he was created in the image and likeness of God.

Shadow of Ezra
@ShadowofEzra
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who was excommunicated from the Church by order of Pope Francis, has come out strongly condemning the satanic Olympics in Paris as a vile attack on God by the anti-Christian elite who want to undermine traditional family roles.

He says these satanic rituals are a recurring theme, previously seen at the 2012 London Olympics, the 2016 Gotthard Tunnel opening, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

He was disturbed by the following:

- Transvestite and effeminate dancers
- A parody of the LGBTQ+ Last Supper
- Holograms of the horsemen of the Apocalypse
- A decapitated Marie Antoinette celebrating the French Revolution

He even called Emmanuel Macron’s wife a transvestite and described Michelle Obama as a muscular man in a wig.

“Emanuel Macron, who passes off a transvestite as his own wife with impunity, just as Barack Obama is accompanied by a muscular man in a wig.”

He ends by advocating for Christians to unite globally and boycott the Olympics and its sponsors.

Oh, indeed, Erdogan's behavior is appalling because, until he came along, Turkey was a close ally of Israel. This goes back centuries. There is a Jewish Quarter of Istanbul where Jews settled after being kicked out of places such as Spain. For all the crap they had been through, when they got there and found all they had to do was pay the dhimmi tax and the authorities would leave them alone, they found that to be a good deal. Hence, Turkey and Israel always were friendly towards each other. Until Erdogan.

146 @132 the book A Savage Beauty refutes just about every story about Cobb being a racist. The belief came from a book in the early sixties by a reporter from the Atlanta journal constitution. The book I cited puts every story in perspective and is backed up by police reports and newspaper reports at the time Cobb was playing. Cobb barnstormed with black players in the off season. Cobb was a miserable SOB but he was that way with everyone unless you were a friend.

151 Curious if you have fake balloting on your modeling?
---
I tried modeling once, but gave up on it. I know the theory, but I don't have access to the right data sets.

Now I just look at polls and poll trends to see where the electorate is going.

I don't even try to figure out what cheating will occur. The best I can do is look at the actions of the Democrats. In 2020 they were cool as ice while not campaigning at all. I couldn't figure it out and was making me insane. Learned why, they had a plan in place where they didn't need to campaign, they were ballot harvesting.

This year they are replacing their candidate 100 days before an election. The basement strategy was available to them, but instead they did lawfare, a hail mary debate, attempted assassination, and now candidate replacement.

So who knows?

But as of right now Trump is on track to get 85 to 90 million votes.

193 but how hard is it really when you control the media and the ballots in purple state cities? Joe Biden say on his ass in his basement in 2020, ran a pathetic excuse for a campaign, and is credited with receiving a record # of ballots
----
I actually have an answer for this.

Ballot cheating takes logistics and is actually hard. Look at 2000 Mules. That took months of work to stuff enough absentee ballots into the drop boxes. You can't just fire up a laser printer in the backroom and bring them in on a forklift to a precinct. They have to have numbers and tie to a voter on the rolls.

Even with the late night antics in Detroit, they had teams of people having to hand fill out ballots using names of people who hadn't voted.

The more legitimate votes Harris can get, the easier it is to get to a viable level of cheating. It also helps to keep Trumps numbers down with a good campaign, because you can vote using the ballot of a Trump voter that is sitting home.

The simplest check, which you *always* do, is do an install and see if the system reboots. Yet they couldn't have done even that. For a company to entrust their data - their life's blood - to a provider who is that careless is suicidal. Yet here we are.

203 The Venezuelan elections have been an echo of here, in many ways: the leading opposition candidate was charged w made up crimes and determined ineligible to run. Then, the country rallied around the next candidate and Maduro pulled his security. The opposition attempted to have poll watchers in all election halls, but many were barred from entering and now many who were permitted are being removed before they could count the paper ballot back-ups. Opposition was destroying Maduro in polls, like 69 to 31%, but we all know how that works.

The current narrative I'm seeing is Christians are just so stupid and egotistical, they can't understand the subtle nuances of a Greek based Dionysus baccanalia scene. That any Christian is dumb for thinking it was the last supper.

Never mind major news outlets reported it as a last supper homage, and they lost a sponsor because the sponsor saw it as an attack on Christianity.

I have a theory about the painting/art history aspect of that, that ties it definitively to the louvre. It might be out in left field. I'm going to mull it over and post thoughts in the arts thread tomorrow.

I have Charles Moore's three volume bio of Margaret Thatcher. In it, there is a picture of her, at a campaign stop, reading from the 1983 Labour manifesto. This was the document called "the longest suicide note in history". Trump can, and should, do something similar. Broadcast his opponent's speeches and statements far and wide. Whether it be Harris or something else.

sounds like Maduro lost big and is now going to move to phase 3 of Socialism.

Simon Bolivar wrote as he was dying waiting for the ship to take him to exile: "This country will fall inevitably into the hands of the unrestrained [mob] and then into the hands of tyrants so insignificant they will be almost imperceptible, of all colors and races; [o]nce we’ve been eaten alive by every crime and extinguished by [viciousness], the Europeans won’t even bother to conquer us. He was a theater auter that had designed a bunch of shows for high profile French venues, like opera. If anything, designing a controversial Olympics will be a resume booster!

I'll admit, I loved the mashup of heavy metal Gojira with an opera singer doing Bizet's Carmen. With the backdrop of headless Marie Antoinettes in that gorgeous building. It was a stunning visual. But it was too gory for a supposedly PG show, and for the Olympics was completely off brand.

I think that UK opened the door for this, when Danny Boyle directed the opening ceremonies, and put in those stupid hospital beds as propaganda for their socialist medicine.

300 The Mondale discussion is interesting. The little bit of campaigning Harris is doing, she is leaning right into her leftist followers. The primary is where you lean left to get your base solid, then move to the middle to gain independents.

Want to know where Independents are? Trump leads them 54/40.

She is still in the primary, and the Dem convention is going to be a wokefest.

Reminds me of Mondale rolling the dice and promising to raise taxes. She is leaning into all the things the voters hate.

323 Hey Berserker, if you're around, what kind of guitar pickups do you like? I have a git with Di Marzio super distortion that I have to change (they're yellow and git is black) so I was thinking about exploring other types of pickups. I use humbuckers. I play rhythm, don't play metal (listen to it though) but I like a good, thick sound with a bit of crunch to give it presence.

Posted by: SFGoth at July 28, 2024 10:49 PM (KAi1n)

Not sure how much longer I'll be here so I'll just leave this here. The style of guitar is going to dictate things. My own preference always revolves around either the Gibson 500T, or the Seymour Duncan Distortion. Anything gibson, or anything like a gibson that has a tune o matic style bridge, or made from mahogany, or wood with similar characteristics usually gets the 500T. If the guitar is resonant and louder while being played unpluged its getting a 500T. IF...the guitar is like a jackson, or has a floyd rose style bridge and is made from a denser wood, its getting the duncan distortion. Thats how it is in my world for what I do. Again, I really need to know what guitar and amp you're using to get you in the ballpark.

A good take I saw was that for the debate, Trump just needs to throw her off balance, so she does the annoying laugh she does when she gets uncomfortable, as a defense mechanism. Then if he's lucky, while flustered she'll say something dumb.

He has to be careful though in how he plays it. Tulsi thrashed her good, but she had the woman card to play. He needs to stay focused on task and presidential, so any accusations of sexism or racism can't be overplayed by the media.

As the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, Kurilla recently sent a classified memo to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warning that the strategy to stop the Houthis’ disruption of shipping routes is “failing.” Kurilla pushed for a more aggressive U.S. response. The Journal quotes an official as stating that “many people found the tone of [Kurilla’s] memo to be a bit shocking,” suggesting it effectively warned that “U.S. service members will die if we continue going this way.”

403 Humbuckers have two coils in them, running opposite directions to block out any interference. I used to play rocksmith in front of a large tv and needed this protection. Two pickups on the guitar is standard but I have often seen three.

The Fender type pickups are three in a set and they are single coil. You can get more jagged raw sound out of them. The switch has five positions:

1 Bridge
2 Bridge and mid
3 Mid
4 Mid and neck
5 Neck

The mid coil runs the opposite direction, so the 2 and 4 positions are similar to humbuckers.

430 the book A Savage Beauty refutes just about every story about Cobb

The book title is "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty" by Charles Leerhsen, published 2015

From the blurb: "After his death in 1961, however, something strange happened: his reputation morphed into that of a monster--a virulent racist who also hated children and women, and was in turn hated by his peers.

How did this happen? Who is the real Ty Cobb? Setting the record straight, Charles Leerhsen pushed aside the myths, traveled to Georgia and Detroit, and re-traced Cobb's journey, from the shy son of a professor and state senator who was progressive on race for his time, to America's first true sports celebrity. In the process, he tells of a life overflowing with incident and a man who cut his own path through his times--a man we thought we knew but really didn't."

Sure! I have a kingsize comforter to wash, too!

We put in our soap & coins, get coffee & wait.

Mom, looking sheepish, says: "I have a confession to make... my comforter had dog pee on it."

Me, laughing: "Mine had cat barf on it."

There are a lot of factors which have gone into making current air travel hell. But IMAO, it all started with airlines trying to cuts costs sometime in the late '70s-early '80s. Some accountant genius said if they removed one of the two black olives from their in-flight salad, they'd save x number of bucks. So they did. And the cost-cutting never stopped. Leg room went out the window. Fees for luggage. Smaller seats. More puddle jumpers so less seat availability. Less flights. And it still continues. Next thing you know, they'll be adding a meal service charge fee for each flight, including a mandatory 20% tip.

So I blame everything bad with air travel on the loss of one black olive in a salad.

Well, it seems to be gibson like, even has the same scale. I'm thinking a gibson 500T for the bridge position and 496R for the neck position. The 500T is a ceramic magnet pickup like what you have now, but much better. The dimarzio can be a tad muddy sometimes. The 500T has serious nads, but has a little more clarity and serious crunch. Roll the volume back and it gets very clean if needed. This..this is assuming you want to keep the thickness you got with the dimarzio, but improve on it. If you want a slightly darker sound than the 500T go with the duncan distortion, both are ceramic magnet. The duncan distortion is a tad more extreme, and the 500T may be a wee bit more of a universal solder. If you're looking to back off and get more of a classic rock sound then there will be other choices to make, like maybe the Duncan 59. I have had great luck with the 2 pickups I mentioned and probably have a dozen of each in guitars. They slice like a hammer.

I've read more than a few of his books. I find he has a great beginning and middle in his books. But endings always feel rushed and unsatisfying, as if it's 4:58 p.m., he looks at his watch and says, 'Well, time to wrap this up. Cocktails at 5.'

The one book, well books, I enjoyed were the 5 serial book story 'The Green Mile'; I still have the five smaller paperback books. It was a good marketing strategy. But the story was also good. I don't know, somehow supernatural in a more human way.

Asimov, too.

It's funny, there have been many great authors in their period but who fail the test of time. Someone like Sinclair Lewis, e.g. (His first few books were great but then they turned into potboilers.)

There's Twain and Poe. Or Mickey Spillane. I'm trying really hard to think of great American authors from the past who are still read today. I know 'the great American authors', like Willa Carther, but still read? It's difficult. Schools no longer require most of them so 'hunting out those books' vs. video games, video games always win.

Toughest read for me, over many many months, after stopping for a while, too, was 'Bleak House'. Some Dickens is just dense.

'Gulag' took a long time to read, as well, but that's because there was so much to take in, to comprehend, that you needed a little time to process it.

"New footage emerged showing Amas launching attack on two female officers"

"Fahir (pictured) is seen punching a female police officer in the face, breaking her nose, before knocking down a second woman officer"

It's interesting to notice that you're supposed to pretend they're equals and just police officers right up until the point where stuff starts happening and then you're required to treat the female officers differently since they're women.

658 So while we were visiting our two month from now new kitten at the home the litter is growing up in, Mrs VIA casually mentioned that the little guy really seems attached to one of his sisters in the litter.

Wait....did I say 'casually'?

Yeh, they both will be coming home with us in September.

665 So yesterday was one of those rare Charleston days where the temps were not that high, and the humidity was about 20 points lower than usual.

A perfect afternoon for going down to our little Single-A ball field, and watching the River Dogs play ball.

When you get free parking, and tickets are $8.00 each, you can actually enjoy baseball.
