Quite a few decades ago I convinced a school library to go full tech and throw out their card catalog. Installed a Clipper program I wrote on a computer running NT. It was rock solid for two plus decades. But the school closed down. For now anyway. I fear the call I may get someday when the school opens up again and wants to use the library. Think about it. All we have is an image of a document with a hen scratch signature. Then (I think) a hastily composed tweet from some 20 year old campaign managerette saying Oh. Not being computer savvy, I have to ask why those OS are RAM limited?
Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at July 22, 2024 05:12 AM (YRsIm) It's because of the way the original IBM PC was originally designed. Memory locations above a certain address were set up to be read only or to do something as opposed to just being memory. Above 640k you had ROM BIOS and all your I/O. Also, the hardware could only address 1 MB of memory, so having more memory involved bank switching, where you'd have a memory area that was like a spot in a three ring binder where you could hold a single loose page at a time, but only one. The design team had no idea what they were building would be the basis for most computers four decades into the future, so they went with something easy to manufacture instead of something that would be easy to extend. If, way back when, you'd told them "Someday this will be extended into the gigabytes" they could have saved us a lot of pain. Posted by: Ace's liver at July 22, 2024 05:47 AM (B9Dv5) 93

We have 80% chance of rain today and tomorrow, dropping all the way to 60% later in the week. Which means lower high temps, but higher humidity. It also means I need to park at work on the side of the street that doesn't flood. That side gets hot afternoon sun, so I don't usually leave the car there, but better that that having it flooded out like the late lamented BMW 3 Series in 2019.

That's a really good question. The hardware supported up to 4GB, though you couldn't get that much at the time. But if you installed more than 512MB, the operating system failed in weird ways. I know there was an issue with disk caching that would corrupt your hard drive if you had too much memory. Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 22, 2024 05:5 Isn't this sort of like wondering about why a punch card computer can't run Windows 3.1. It's just something so far out that they can't conceive creating the framework to utilize it? I imagine Windows 3.1 is built on older shit which had a lot of those limitations in it. I mean don't we have a lot of stuff out there now that doesn't play well with 32bit operating systems since 64 is much more the standard? Posted by: Buzzion at July 22, 2024 06:12 AM (muqiQ) 123

Ken, monetary inflation is so ingrained for so long, most people aren't even aware that the natural order of things over time generally is for prices to go down. Not up.
They do bugger with the CPI and term "hedonistic adjustments" or something like that for things that get better over time. Posted by: Common Tater at July 22, 2024 06:15 AM (0KO+L) 125

A lot of people talk about their calculator having more memory than the spacecraft that landed on the moon.
Most of the computing power was on the ground. They had two floors of computers at mission control, each identical, one as a backup. IBM 360s, about a half dozen of them. I don't know how that compares to a calculator but they had some bit of computing power to bear. When Apollo 13 crisis hit, I read somewhere the government basically hijacked any university computer systems that had spare processing time to crunch numbers. That's one thing that really torques me about the inflation numbers. They don't take into account the massive cost reduction of electronic technology nor savings from manufacturing process expense reductions.
Electronics cause inflation to be massively understated. The way it works is they sort of pro-rate the price based on the new capability. Let's say the "basket" included a 50" television last year, and it cost $2000. This year nobody is buying 50" televisions, so they put the 60" television into the basket, and it also costs $2000. But since it's more capable than last year's television, they'll reduce the cost for the calculation, e.g. the screen is about 30% larger, so they'll reduce the price by 30% and pretend the price is $1400 before they run the numbers. From what I can tell the basket is also electronics-heavy, though I'm not sure if they're doing it to understate inflation or if other people just spend a lot more on electronics than I do. Date: 2024-07-22 04:59:32 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 22, 2024 STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN ON CLIMATE POLLUTION REDUCTION GRANTS "When I think of climate change, I think about jobs – good-paying, union jobs that put Americans to work, rebuild our nation's aging infrastructure, and support our transition to a clean energy future. As climate change continues to fuel more extreme impacts on communities across the country, we are using every tool in our toolbox to reduce pollution, lower families' energy costs, advance environmental justice, and make our communities more resilient. Today my Administration is empowering local communities across 30 states to cut pollution and fight the climate crisis – from curbing greenhouse gas emissions in Pennsylvania to flood-proofing infrastructure in North Carolina. Today and every day, I will continue working to protect American families from harmful pollution and build a clean energy future." Posted by: m at July 22, 2024 06:34 AM (64Zez) 154

Maybe I'll tell them my Uncle was eaten by cannibals and they'll take the hint. Posted by: Divide by Zero I am slowly getting rid of stuff no longer needed here. Last evening I was looking through papers and notebooks from my time at DuPont. It was strange and awkward at the same time. Why was I ever interested in that? I have no idea what this even means. That was some interesting work on a good idea -- it's too bad that I had reached the "I don't want to do this anymore" stage of my career and it died on the vine. And all this searching was me looking for the documentation (and maybe code) that I had done on a system in VBA that was a robust cleaner of measurements of color from the aftermarket that served body shops. I've found files related to that work, but not the work itself. Yet. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at July 22, 2024 06:45 AM (xG4kz) 170

In 2016, I had a client running still Windows NT 4 for their corporate NOS, and had many workstations in production running Windows NT Workstation. This was not a mom and pop shop. The company manufactured electrical transformers.
I upgraded them to Active Directory, which was a very challenging project. Their domain controllers were ancient Compaq Proliant and HP servers, and could not handle the minimum requirements of even Windows 2003.
