My checking-account bank was unaffected by this worldwide burp Friday; at least, not the ATM. On my Windows 10 desktop at work, only one platform had a hiccup: Part way through my creation of a form to transfer some funds, the screen (on Oracle Applications) hung up, then went black. I dreamed something about bringing my current car to a body shop for some work. Peculiarly, I had two of my former cats with me, one pure black and one white, and there were difficulties keeping them in their rolling carriers. I got to the shop early, before they were open, and parked on the street nearby. A little black kid in a red T-shirt raced over and stuck an arm into the front passenger window, which was half open, and I couldn't close the window until his mother came and whisked him away.
Then the shop was open, but I had to drive up a steep ramp from the street -- the shop floor was about ten feet above the street level (!), and it was tricky to maneuver the car, like driving along the edge of a cliff. I got out of the car, and the cats were loose; the shop owner helped me stuff them back into their carriers. Then I woke up. Today is "Magnificent Seven" day on Grit, with the original 1960 film running at 9 Central. Before that, though, there are two Randolph Scott flicks, Comanche Station (1960) and The Tall T (1957), which is based on an Elmore Leonard novel. Richard Boone plays the villain in that one, which he always did so well.

From what I have read, Yul Brenner was greatly irritated by Steve McQueen's acts to upstage him in scenes they had together in that movie. Posted by: Our Secret Service -- Still Slope-Averse! at July 21, 2024 *** True . . . but in the finished film, YB dominates all the scenes he's in, just fine. The same story comes up with James Cagney in his final film, the Billy Wilder One, Two, Three. Apparently JG was so exasperated by Horst Buchholz's attempts to upstage him that he retired after that movie. Of course he'd been in movies for thirty years, and may have felt it was time. But it's odd that Buchholz is in both movies. Perhaps he learned from watching McQueen the year before. In the finished Wilder film, Cagney dominates his scenes without trouble. One "One, Two, Three" version is that Cagney had a good deal of trouble with the famous Bucholz "transformation" scene, which is a very long take. When he finally got through it, he decided he was done. I love that movie and it is never on TCM. Posted by: sal at July 21, 2024 06:01 AM (4lnL8) 68

Contacting them was impossible by phone and as we tried to book online you couldn't book fast enough with flights basically disappearing before your eyes. We were able to rebook for Tuesday. Now instead of arriving for a vacation with family starting later today we arrive Tuesday evening, have a 3 hour drive to our ultimate destination. Now Sunday to early Friday has become late Tuesday to early Friday. Too old for this crap.

These founders feel this way because Trump is an advocate for a number of policies that could be harmful to people of color. Trump has spoken about, for instance, using force to deport 15 million to 20 million people — a fierce anti-immigrant policy for the tech sector, which relies on a lot of immigrant talent.
Nice bait and switch. Black Americans aren’t immigrants, illegal or otherwise. During Trump’s last presidency, he banned DEI at the federal level. He’s threatened to remove federal funding from schools that offer curricula on topics of race and racism. None of which means jack for actual hard working blacks, just race grifters. The Republican platform under Trump also has no interest in addressing climate change (which disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities). Climate change isn’t impacting jack shit. Or rather it has the same impact as the Easter Bunny because neither thing exists. Posted by: Ian S. at July 21, 2024 06:06 AM (FD5dr) 72

The problem is that the computers running CrowdStrike are the ones used in critical roles by large organisations. The 99% that went right on working weren't embedded in ATMs or airport terminals or healthcare providers.
There's pretty good grounds for a lot of shareholder lawsuits about paying for Windows licenses on things that embedded Linux could handle better for free. Also, the Crowdstrike problem didn't impact Linux or macOS because both of those operating systems have modern APIs that allow you to do what CS does without writing a kernel driver that can do null pointer dereferences. I just finished reading Get Shorty, the basis for the John Travolta film. While it's entertaining, I don't get the "comedy" aspect; several people (mostly scumbags) get shot and killed. The movie never dives into just what the script for "Mister Lovejoy" contains -- it is simply referred to as a "can't miss" property. The book, on the other hand, does delve into it and consequently ruins its mystique as Leonard did not write about it in a way that imparted its seeming irresistibility. That script was better left unexamined and thereby retain its desirability as something everyone wanted to be a part of. On hold with Delta customer service, it's 31 minutes and counting. Hoping that they can work out something to get us to our destination earlier then the flights we booked late last night to replace our canceled flights. At this point I would be ok just canceling the entire trip. The family members that arrived early, before the IT meltdown can enjoy CA without us. CrowdStrike needs to be sued into oblivion. So how do we avoid a repeat of this?
Break the monopoly. Mainly of Windows. Stop the copyright baloney and treat it as an invention, not a novel. And it's well past its patent running out for older versions. People should be able to copy it and tweak it up themselves and resell it. Then you'd get actual competition - and one aspect of the competition would be a Windows that didn't suck at security. Also of really large companies relying on a single really large company to do their work for them. Lastly, allow liability. Every single consumer that suffered - from cancelled flights, delayed surgeries, etc. - should be able to sue the company that outsourced their computer work to CrowdStrike. Speaking of the Trump shooting, people are trying to do acoustical analysis of the day. There were possibly three (maybe four) weapons at multiple distances before the the shooter was shot by the feds. Which, if the photo of Tweedledee and Tweedledum would be any indication, was through a suppressor.
Interestingly the (ahem) "counter sniper" team's 2nd story window was only about 50 feet away from the shooter and almost directly behind him in relation to the stage. The CrowdStrike fiasco got my wife and I to realize how lucky we are to be retired from the IT world. Had we still been employed we'd have likely been called in to deal with the mess and spent the weekend in the office. Basically staring at a BSOD and waiting for the network crew to open up the lines again. The government's response to situations like this is always FUBAR. So my five (or so) year old Bialetti Moka pot finally gave up (my fault, but my dumbassery does not merit repeating here) So, I got an inexpensive one from amazon, boy, that didn't' work out. Second day the handle disattached. Also, thing feels cheap. So, I went and got a replacement Bialetti, and mornings are American again.

I'd be interested in any links or names you've seen to read/watch more. Also it was interesting to see that the water tower was also in the same direction and made a fairly tight cone in relation to the stage. Oh, and Tweedledee and Tweedledum set up with a tree between them and the roof. Fortunately the other counter snipers were in the window, though. NY Post: Secret Service honchos denied Trump additional security for 2 years before assassination attempt...The ex-president, 78, asked for more agents and magnetometers at large public events he attended, as well as extra snipers for outdoor venues...The Secret Service initially denied claims that someone from Trump’s camp asked for more help ahead of the deadly shooting as “absolutely false.”...a spokesman for the Secret Service, [later] admitted that the agency had denied Trump’s request for additional security, but claimed it had only learned about the new information in the wake of the tragedy.
Oh. For 2 years? Only learned about the denials after that assassination attempt? The roof was too sloped? Local law enforcement screwed up? What the Secret Service did for 2 years was willfully create the conditions for an assassination attempt. I can't imagine that Biden's hatred of Trump and RFK Jr. didn't directly fuel all this; that toxicity had to have spread far and wide in that administration. https://tinyurl.com/4ykhrvte Posted by: Alteria Pilgram at July 21, 2024 07:59 AM (G8tt9) 213

That doesn't make any sense. If those events were held in, say CA and TX, we'd expect the USSS to cover all of them, wouldn't we? So what difference does it make to USSS that they're in the same city? It would be a bigger strain on Philadelphia PD to support all three, but not USSS. The only difference it makes to USSS is that it makes it easier to transfer personnel from Trump to the others on the fly. Posted by: Methos at July 21, 2024 08:01 AM (Dnobf) 216

One thing that people do not appreciate is the amount of interaction between the ground and objects near the ground and sound "waves". Depending on what the sound has traveled over, a sound can be drastically transformed. A sound from a rifle fired close to a roof and then the acoustic wave diffracted over a roof edge is going to sound very different from a rifle fired at shoulder height from the ground in free air. In addition, this difference will depend on where the listener is standing. Acoustic propagation in the real world is amazingly complex. Posted by: pawn at July 21, 2024 08:16 AM (QB+5g) 244

At 2:19 there's a cartoon reproduction of where Tweededee and Tweedledum were stationed on their roof. Notice the trees blocking the shooter. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead I have the same perspective. For years the State of Washington told Boeing to pack sand when they asked for infrastructure improvements and when they weren't doing that they were using Boeing as a piggy bank. For extra credit the politicians would run around bad mouthing Boeing. Eventually Boeing had enough and that's when they opened the South Carolina plant and moved the HQ to Chicago. It is there when everything began to fall apart, management was disconnected from the company and they began to focus on playing one state against the other. A lot of these companies used to use home grown systems. They built it and could support it. But they decided to hand it off to vendors. Now they get to sit on the phones, talking to a call center in the Phillipines, hoping they can get someone to take a look at it. And that would be okay if it wasn't garbage. SPACE NON-NEWS
Some will not launch rockets, and others can't launch. Some people will not leave the ISS to go home soon or do spacewalks. The originally scheduled Rocket Lab mission, "A Sky Full of SARs," which was scheduled for Saturday, July 20, has been postponed to an unknown date. Rocket Lab announced on their X account: "Launch update: Our next Electron launch will move to a later date at the request of mission partner Ccapellaspace. So they can complete additional testing. With rockets ready, we’ll move to our next mission in the manifest with Synspective, which will fly next on Electron within the next few weeks." The 4 scheduled Starlink missions by SpaceX have now been postponed several times. The reason is that the FAA needs to give SpaceX approval to launch the rockets. So, the only fixed rocket launch is the Atlas V 551 by ULA, scheduled for July 30, but let's see what the valves are saying on the pad or the Atlas rocket. And no, there is nothing new about the Starliner. In addition, NASA ISS Spacewalk #91 has also been postponed to a not-yet-determined date. We will keep you updated about all the ongoing events here. @271 rhennigantx-just by my wild ass scientific guessing first three shots were the assassins, a single shot then the string of four or five rounds that were maybe follow up shots from a semi auto platform(?) Then there's the audible last shot you here by the guy doing the acoustic analysis. I watched the video where people were screaming and the guy tells people to "look out he's turning there way" and you can hear that last shot. Im guessing maybe the fourth shot and the one at the very end of the acoustic analysis was from the same rifle(maybe a bolt gun?). So yes, three shooters total.

I don't see this talked about on Twitter much. At the very end of the RNC, after the balloon drop, an opera song started playing.
It was Nessun dorma by Puccini. Which was featured in the Tom Clancy movie Sum of All Fears, about a president who is nearly assassinated and goes medieval on the cartel responsible Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at July 21, 2024 06:41 AM (evvc2) Trump's use of Nessun Dorma has nothing to do with the assassination attempt. He used that at the end of the RNC in his last campaign when the fireworks were going off. Its use probably has more to do with the lyrics ending the song "I win! I win! I win!". The WSJ initially reported that the shooter on the day of the event flew a drone in a planned pattern over the site and hid the gun. I haven't seen any additional articles refuting or expanding on that since then.
One news article quoted some unnamed source that the killshot was one in a million. Apparently the snipers target consisted of the shooter's scope, the shooter's eye and forehead. I find the one in a million characterization to be nonsense. For days the reporting is the distance was so close that a novice could have made that shot and then suddenly, when it was convenient to glorify the Secret Service, it becomes a one in a million shot. Dunno." All solutions begin at the same point: stop farming out code to retarded Indians. Full stop. With a billion and a half of them there are of course large numbers of talented individuals, but in the aggregate they fucking suck and their culture fucking sucks and everything they touch turns to shit. This was a failure not just of Crowdstrike but on Microsoft's end as well. On the Crowdstrike end, there apparently has been indications for months due to prior fuckups that they have retards pushing updates directly to production from their individual workstations. This is insane. I'm not buying the 8.5 million figure. We had about 2k machines go down, and I'm aware of several local institutions that had 10-20k *each* go down - that's just within 15 miles or so of here.
