CrowdStrike's faulty update crashed 8.5 million Windows devices, says Microsoft. (The Verge)
It's the same number; there's something like 1.5 billion Windows PCs in use worldwide.
The problem is that the computers running CrowdStrike are the ones used in critical roles by large organisations. The 99% that went right on working weren't embedded in ATMs or airport terminals or healthcare providers.

The one claim not dismissed is that executives at the company lied about the adequacy of its security controls in public statement, which the SEC claims amounts to securities fraud, something the SEC does have the authority to police, since that's what the S stands for.

The same story comes up with James Cagney in his final film, the Billy Wilder One, Two, Three. Apparently JG was so exasperated by Horst Buchholz's attempts to upstage him that he retired after that movie. Of course he'd been in movies for thirty years, and may have felt it was time. But it's odd that Buchholz is in both movies. Perhaps he learned from watching McQueen the year before.
In the finished Wilder film, Cagney dominates his scenes without trouble.

I just finished reading Get Shorty, the basis for the John Travolta film. While it's entertaining, I don't get the "comedy" aspect; several people (mostly scumbags) get shot and killed. There's pretty good grounds for a lot of shareholder lawsuits about paying for Windows licenses on things that embedded Linux could handle better for free.
Also, the Crowdstrike problem didn't impact Linux or macOS because both of those operating systems have modern APIs that allow you to do what CS does without writing a kernel driver that can do null pointer dereferences.

The movie never dives into just what the script for "Mister Lovejoy" contains -- it is simply referred to as a "can't miss" property. The book, on the other hand, does delve into it and consequently ruins its mystique as Leonard did not write about it in a way that imparted its seeming irresistibility. That script was better left unexamined and thereby retain its desirability as something everyone wanted to be a part of.

She's a good show girl. She just turned two and she's still a year or so out of coming into her own.
Right now because of a leg injury suffered a year ago, she moves a little too close in the rear and really Ruth has a somewhat better front assembly, but Diana has a beautiful head and her side movement blows the competition away. It was politics and not a lack of virtues that prevented her from getting Best of Breed these last few days.

Also of really large companies relying on a single really large company to do their work for them.
Lastly, allow liability. Every single consumer that suffered - from cancelled flights, delayed surgeries, etc. - should be able to sue the company that outsourced their computer work to CrowdStrike.

I just happened to see a youtube clip last night. I didn't like the presenter much but watched the audio analysis to see what they had to say. I'd be interested in any links or names you've seen to read/watch more.
Also it was interesting to see that the water tower was also in the same direction and made a fairly tight cone in relation to the stage.
Oh, and Tweedledee and Tweedledum set up with a tree between them and the roof.
Fortunately the other counter snipers were in the window, though.

If those events were held in, say CA and TX, we'd expect the USSS to cover all of them, wouldn't we? So what difference does it make to USSS that they're in the same city? It would be a bigger strain on Philadelphia PD to support all three, but not USSS.

I'd have to argue against that. Their workforce is pretty skilled, and they have probably the worlds greatest history of experience to tap from WRT maintenance and engineering. I suspect the root cause is leadership focus on schedules and milestones, and the penalties for not meeting them.

I have the same perspective. For years the State of Washington told Boeing to pack sand when they asked for infrastructure improvements and when they weren't doing that they were using Boeing as a piggy bank. For extra credit the politicians would run around bad mouthing Boeing. Eventually Boeing had enough and that's when they opened the South Carolina plant and moved the HQ to Chicago. It is there when everything began to fall apart, management was disconnected from the company and they began to focus on playing one state against the other. Somewhere along the line the CEOs we're nothing more than corporate suits instead of being engineers first. The rest is history.

Some will not launch rockets, and others can't launch. Some people will not leave the ISS to go home soon or do spacewalks.
The originally scheduled Rocket Lab mission, "A Sky Full of SARs," which was scheduled for Saturday, July 20, has been postponed to an unknown date.
Rocket Lab announced on their X account:

So they can complete additional testing. With rockets ready, we’ll move to our next mission in the manifest with Synspective, which will fly next on Electron within the next few weeks."
The 4 scheduled Starlink missions by SpaceX have now been postponed several times. The reason is that the FAA needs to give SpaceX approval to launch the rockets.
So, the only fixed rocket launch is the Atlas V 551 by ULA, scheduled for July 30, but let's see what the valves are saying on the pad or the Atlas rocket.
And no, there is nothing new about the Starliner.
In addition, NASA ISS Spacewalk #91 has also been postponed to a not-yet-determined date.

For days the reporting is the distance was so close that a novice could have made that shot and then suddenly, when it was convenient to glorify the Secret Service, it becomes a one in a million shot.

I, too, complained about this yesterday. I've had the same issue as Wolfus where, if sedation is involved, the doctors' offices will mandate that you have someone not only drive you but sit and wait at the office during the procedure. The only people I know who are available to do this are employed and have to take time off from work. That's why I'll be skipping out on the anesthesia during my next scopage. If they *still* insist on that bullshit then I'll just not do it.
