It's more then a little confusing but sometime around 2020 post election Trump is talking about Crowdstrike, Ukraine, and the DNC.

Is it all coming together yet?

Damned if I know.

No, it affected Windows 10 as well. But only if you had CrowdStrike installed, and it's something mostly used by large corporations and government departments.

CrowdStrike is also the company that "investigated" the DNC hack and blamed Russia.

When questioned under oath much later, they admitted they had no evidence at all implicating Russia.

I guess I have a similar question. Is the Crowdstrike problem dependent on the version of Windows the company is running. I know we were always running a couple of versions behind at my former employer.

Dmitri Alperovitch is the chairman of Silverado Policy Accelerator, a geopolitics think-tank in Washington, D.C., and a co-founder and former chief technology officer of CrowdStrike. Alperovitch is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Russia who came to the United States in 1994 with his family.

19 The company where I work was completely taken offline from the CrowdStrike debacle. Around 1,000 employees, all working remotely. Not untill mid next week do they expect to get all thier server environments and everyone's machine up and running. The tricky part was that they also had Bitlocker installed on people's machines, meaning they couldn't even get to the command prompt to delete the offending CrowdStrike file needed to fix this. And of course the server that lets people get thier passcode to unlock Bitlocker protection was also down due to the CrowdStrike bug. I think it kinda serves the company I work for right, as their DevOps guys are paranoid with security... forcing developers to log into virtual machines to do thier work and other obnoxious inconveniences.

I actually read that report when it came out. About 200 words into it I went this thing is complete BS, all they're doing is saying things that sounds scary and technical to gloss over that none of it had any facts behind it. It was something of a revelation about what had been going on and from that moment on I knew that the Clinton campaign was up to no good which caused me to read everything I could get my hands on very carefully. Shortly thereafter it became clear that the Clinton campaign, the FBI, hell the whole federal government were out to get Trump for real.

22 The manager of every IT department that allowed an update to be applied to hundreds or thousands of PC's without first testing it thoroughly on one PC (of each type, with each OS variant) should be out looking for work today, preferably as a street cleaner. There's no excuse for what happened.

I handled change, problem, performance, and capacity management and planning for three data centers a good while back. It would never have happened there.

25 My cousin flew out of Minneapolis today. It was a complete disaster. Her original flight and a number of other tries at getting on different flights all got canceled. Somehow she managed to get a plane out and was only 6 hours late getting to the destination.

How I got alerted to the crowdstrike thing is she called me up to yell at me about Microsoft. This was entirely reasonable since I'm always poking fun at her for being an Apple fanatic. All in all it was a pretty good morning because of that phone call.

What happened in Butler, PA, based on current information, is shockingly close to, if not exactly hitting the bullseye of negligence or criminality by indirect intentionality. By this I mean, nobody directly conspired with the shooter but they were so sloppy about how everything was handled that those in charge knew they were creating a situation where an assassin could be successful. With this in mind, I'm curious if somebody in the intelligence community hadn't already picked up that this guy was planning on trying to shoot Trump.

What they know about firearms wouldn't fill 1/8th of a thimble.

My father used to own a scoped K98 Mauser rebarreled to .308.
At 200 yards off a bench we easily shot the center out of the target.
It was actually boring it was so easy.
We the switched to shooting at a cast iron plate they had at 300 yards, but that wasn't much of a challenge either.

I can't fully wrap my head around putting odds on a shot.

If you aim the bullet and send it and it hits the target, it was a one- in- one shot. If you miss, it was a zero in one.

If you're Gunnery Sergeant Johnny "ruin your whole day" McBadass, it's the former. If you're Master Civilian Warai "which end do the little splodey things come out" Otoko, it's the latter.

But in “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance rejected the “cultural movement in the white working class to blame problems on society or the government.” Instead, he argued, there are lots of small-town white Americans who have nobody to blame but themselves. They’re lazy: “You can walk through a town where 30 percent of the young men work fewer than 20 hours a week and find not a single person aware of his own laziness.” They’re poorly educated, not because of a lack of opportunity, but because they aren’t motivated: “We don’t study as children, and we don’t make our kids study when we’re parents.”

The image would help. Your description implies there was someone injured in front of Trump as well as someone injured behind Trump (with "in front" and "behind" being from the attempted assassin's perspective). That's not impossible but weird during a rally. I'd recommend NEVER using "shooter" but "attempted assassin" in describing this stuff, but that's me.

Well, from her perspective, she's had to live in a shittier home (the White House) than Trump provided earlier, in a place full of people who hate her because she's married to Trump (I can't believe NYC is better in that regard), and Trump is actively trying to go back there. She signed on to be the trophy wife to rich guy that wasn't actively hated. Since he's in the cross-hairs, she is as well as the son she had with him. Melania grew up in Yugoslavia and should have an idea of how living in a place with various people who really hate each other works out.

I don't think that she's thought this through. The mere fact that she coupled with Trump will put her (and Barron) on the kill list.

Yes, that was one hypothesis.

And, after a week of silence on the shooting, the public used the crass and vulgar method of publicly asking questions in order to determine that it wasn't.

Didn't Earn It, contract outsourcing, and excessive H1B hires that don't literally give a shit.

The tech industry has basically shot itself in the head same as Boeing for much of the same reasons. The executives are there primarily to loot the company and push stock prices up (and their options) and do not literally care when they drive the company into the ground.

They float away on their golden parachutes to despoil another company while the workers, suppliers, and those long term buy and hold investors in what they thought was a stable growing company get screwed.

Fun fact, Crowdstrike CEO was the former Chief Tech Officer at MacAfee where the same bad update bricked computers worldwide happened.

This is managerialism at its finest.

Modern cpus are agglomerations of past ones so the problem is not necessarily checking every logic gate but often manufacturing techniques.

Intel is having its current problem because they fell at least one generation behind AMD (due to a failed CEO and their own inhouse chip fabrication problems) and thus are having to ramp up the power loads on their cpus to stay competitive in benchmarks. That being said, if you stay away from the bragging rights top of the cpu stack for gamers and benchmarks, Intel cpus are gtg.

For the most part, the sweet spot in technology is about 2-3 years behind the bleeding edge and usually results in higher reliability and much better pricing. Pretty much goes for a lot of car models too.

Windows will allow you to adjust your settings to only charge off of ... I'm not sure what, exactly, but you'll save the planet, dangit.

Anyway, one of the settings was to maximize battery life by pausing telemetry for X amount of time. All of that stuff that goes on in the background that has nothing to do with you or your needs, but is entirely MS grabbing data to sell.

My battery life went from just over an hour to six hours when I paused it.

Having been an early AMD adopter since the Athalon, been mostly Intel, while also working with Apple's M2 Max recently, Intel has been falling terribly behind and while my usual Go-To Dell XPS or Precision (the Alienware is NOT professional) has been usually reliable because they check most of the boxes other than the keyboard, the Apple M3 Max and now the latest AMD to come out look to be far better choices.

I was looking at the latest marketing as to why NVMEs are so important to the average consumer and it reminded me of the original IBM PC sellers making the pitch to sell a $10k computer to a household averaging $30k so that one could keep and store kitchen recipes.

As far as the fast processors, I'm wondering if the real reason for them is so that the consumer can resume normal operations without the obvious impediment of the myriad of spyware apps slowing them down. NVMEs on the consumer notebook seem to have far more value to those keeping the microphone and camera open for ongoing live processing than for a true practical consumer benefit.

In other words, wear pants, not only to the book thread.

Interesting hypothesis.

I can say with some authority that the superfast NVMEs are needed on top of the line video cards because slower ones bottleneck immediately and start causing stutters and lags. I had a decent recent one that wasn't *quite* the same specs (although it was the same generation) and it couldn't keep up when I did a fresh Windows install on it to not have to deal with bloatware from the factory.

---------
Corporate buyers don't really care and Intel is a safe choice to defend from the top. Intel has some good buys on cpus and motherboards if you stay off the bleeding edge stuff and that includes their laptops. Intel no longer gets their premium price that they used to on their lower performing cpus and integrated stuff because AMD has eroded Intel's pricing power.

For the most part, software is usually about 2-3 years behind benefitting from whatever the current hardware is. Now that includes even gaming--at a certain point, it is more a bragging thing on benchmarks than an actual playability situation and graphics cards (and their drivers) often matter far more than your cpu.

242 Personally I think CPU's are getting faster because they can. It's just the way it is. Plus, a lot of AI, VR and the rest of the consumer apps are consuming more RAM and CPU cycles just to run. (Sloppy code, mostly)

I use NVMEs more for power consumption savings and running quiet. Also takes up less space in the computer case so why not. I also hate to wait on bootup and it is the same reason I max out ram when I build a new computer. Built them since the nineties and turns out you can have a very reliable system that lasts for decades if you get to pick and choose what you put in them.

Desktop power supplies ain't sexy but one of the biggest reasons that desktop computers get fried along with never cleaning the innards. Laptops, by and large, are meant to be disposable anyway.

4) She went down as far as she could just like everyone else

5) She didn't have a sign in her hand and didn't signal anyone

6) She was taking videos off and on up to the shooting and even was doing selfies

There was nothing strange or unusual about her behavior. All that from one single viewing of the video. Sad.

If Melania knows of broken ribs it sort of explains how she approached him, almost gingerly. The defiant Trump, fist raised in air? That pain will really piss you off. I know the first day I said the word 'fvck' about ten thousand times.

Also, the way the SS helped him down the steps.

The shooter is reported to have flown a drone over the event area earlier in the day.

The think he hid his rifle in the area earlier too.

A drone in highly restricted airspace? Wow. People can't even fly them over podunk local county drunk tanks.

248 240 Video games have always driven PC tech. They push the hardware and software more than anything else. I suppose AI is taking that over now.

Neural processors have been around for awhile but AI is a large tech bubble that is in the slow motion process of bursting. Remember the block chain fad a couple of years back. AI is useful for some things but generalized IQ and replacement for people, it ain't. Play around with an AI chatbot and you soon realize that it is not that big of an improvement over LISA back in the day.

Simply put, probability based guesses are going to always be based on your 'prior' knowledge and when new data is incorporated, the AI systems using LLM go slowly or fastly insane depending on where it is drinking in its new data. It doesn't 'think' but fills in the gaps using probability algorithms and the dataset it was trained upon.

Bayesian statistical models are pretty amazing at first until you realize that the 'prior' depends on a whole lot of background information that is not in the formal model. Bad background information produce a bad prior and then unreliable statistical analysis results.

That fairground is right next to the Pittsburgh-Butler airport. Which would have been a safer venue but it was booked for something else.

This statement is true. Very true.

Most often at the local FBI branch office employee parking lot.

Posted by: Ben Had at July 20, 2024 07:00 AM (5MvGY)

Late but o.k.:

We're looking at his face and we see the bullet traveling (from our right) toward the left side of his face.

That bullet is pretty far back at the back of his head; it would've entered his head (from the left) if he had stayed like that.

BUT he turned to his right! That put his right ear in the bullet's path.

259 I've loathed Microsoft for decades, going back to the early days of MS-DOS, which still lies at the heart of the Windows OS. The only Microsoft product I own is their 4K BASIC interpreter that runs under CP/M on my ancient Kaypro II. That the entire world, just about, should be running on Microsoft's piece-of-shit operating system amazes me. But as Nietzsche pointed out, "Against human stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain."

262 From what we know about the Zen 5 chips, they're using the same process node as the Zen 4 chips, but are physically smaller.

And the X3D stuff sounds like it may run much closer to the non X3D clock speeds as well.

It is quite possible that AMD may price Zen 5 less than Zen 4, to grab Intel Market share while they can without reducing their margins.
