Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Periodic Aviation Thread [Roger Ball]![]() Greetings Horde! It’s the weekend and I’ve been blessed to provide a midday thread for your entertainment. And a great day it is, but not as great as tomorrow! Tomorrow is the opening day of the biggest, best airshow on the planet: the Experimental Aircraft Association AIR VENTURE. So let’s go! The banner photo was taken by Laurie Goossens who does nice work. I’m not shilling for her, but I like this photo because it takes me back to 1979 on the USS Independence (CV-62). In those days, aircraft carriers had their own COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) aircraft. The Grumman C-1 Trader was adapted from the S2F anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The C-1 would allow pilots assigned to ship’s company to maintain their flying skills and retain flight pay while providing great service to the ship by transferring people, cargo and mail as needed. Any officer from the CO down to division officers, if they could find the time, could get checked out. I was a junior LSO in one of the CAG-6 squadrons, so I had the opportunity to wave that airplane and ride as a passenger several times. She [the airplane] was affectionately named “Miss Bell”, which you may be able to make out below the Liberty Bell on the engine nacelle. Air Venture is the most amazing immersive experience anyone remotely interested in aviation can have. In fact, even if you’re not particularly interested in aviation, it is still a huge party with food, music, light shows and people from all over the world. You never know what you will see or hear. Careful planning must be considered if one plans to attend, otherwise there is a risk of being quickly overwhelmed and exhausted. Why, this year, you might even win an auction for a 1970 VW Kombi. How cool would that be? And you don’t have to know or care anything about airplanes!![]() The EAA was “founded in 1953 by a group of individuals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who were interested in building their own airplanes. The EAA expanded its mission of growing participation in aviation to include antiques, classics, warbirds, aerobatic aircraft, ultralights, helicopters, and contemporary manufactured aircraft.” There were over a quarter of a million pilot and builder members as of spring 2024. The organization is a treasure trove of knowledge and talent as well as providing preservation of antique, classic and warbird aircraft. And, by its “experimental” name, the EAA is the largest organization supporting “home built” aircraft which are in the “EXPERIMENTAL” aircraft category. For some spectacular visuals, check out the Air Venture flickr album. In fact, on February 15, 1977, I flew my very first Navy flight from NAS Whiting North in this airplane: ![]() ![]() Air Venture News and Multimedia website. There is plenty there to occupy your time with your favorite beverage or two. In fact, you don’t have to wait until tomorrow. You can browse the various webcams placed around the field right now. My favorite predictably is the Warbird Plaza camera. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Dang. I always wanted to go to the EEA flyin.
I grew up at a little airport in Vancouver WA called Evergreen. There was a flying club there that was mostly antique airplanes. My dad joined when he was learning to fly. What a great time to be a kid. I helped to rebuild old aircraft including a Waco, Tiger Moth, Globe Swift, and a Hawker Hurricane. It was awesome. Sadly haven't flown in ahhhh...29 years. My late first husband was an A&P mechanic for a crappy little cargo airline. He was all about the airplanes. They had to replace a cockpit window and he "salvaged" the cracked old one. My dad and I turned it in to a side table.
Hubbymayhem and I built a steampunk lamp that has an old altimeter in it. And many moons ago I had the "cup" part of a piston from an airplane engine as an ashtray. I have also been to the Patterson Wright Air Force museum in Dayton Ohio. That's my sum total of airplane knowledge. Although I have been on a couple of long haul flights. One to Germany and one to China. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at July 21, 2024 12:12 PM (4XwPj) 16

Ha! We'd just PCS'd to NTTC Corry Field in Pensacola from Gander, Newfoundland. We were incredulous at the panic over snow that wasn't even sticking to the streets and sidewalks. It was barely a layer on the grass. Schools shut down in the middle of the day it started snowing around 1-2 PM. I was bused home from middle school, but my brothers and sister in elementary school weren't allowed to walk home by themselves. Someone had to go get them, so Mom had to walk to their school and get them. When we'd left Newfoundland that December, there was a couple of feet of snow on the ground, and the drive to the ferry to the mainland at Port aux Basque was in a blizzard almost the entire way. 1/4" of snow in Florida is Snowmageddon.

I'm trying to remember the context, maybe it was an American Legion meeting, but within the last few months Pooky ran into someone who used to be a fuel crew chief at the last base Pooky was stationed. Their times didn't overlap, but the guy had to pull Pooky aside and asked, "Okay, what the hell did your plane DO? Cuz you guys had weird fuel requirements!" So Pooky had some fun explaining the plane's mission to someone who actually understood the mechanical side of things.

I don't recall the airline, but a number of its employees took to social media (X) to bitch about the "American flag pin" rule for them. Seems a bunch of them are terrorist loving commies and were sporting the "Palestinian flag" on their uniforms. Some flyers bitched. The airline made a change... so good for them.

Usta live about a nine iron from Langley AFB. Pairs of fighter jets are in the air practicing routinely. Inevitably when you're at a kid's soccer game or some other outdoor event, a pair would fly by and suddenly the sound of afterburners would smother the sound of every conversation, referee whistle or concert musician.
Then inevitably when it stopped, some yenta would complain about it. Then, inevitably and without fail, a veteran would proudly proclaim: "That's the sound of freedom!" Posted by: Quarter Twenty at July 21, 2024 12:32 PM (dg+HA) 41

I remember the first time I flew in my late teens. I worried about how I would dress for the plane ride. I decided on upscale. It was a good choice because everyone on the plane looked suitably attired. Last time I flew it looked like the cast of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' was onboard and Nurse Ratched and the late Richard Simmons were our 'flight attendants'. Never again. This B-25J lives at the airport that I live in the landing pattern of. I've had the opportunity to do an impromptu tour of it about 15 years ago as a buddy worked at the factory it's hangar is attached to. I spent the next 2 weeks in awe. Literally stunned by being inside and able to go into and strap into the tail gunners ball turret seat. I spent about 2 hours with the owner (now deceased) listening to his stories. Cool guy in his own right. Invented something that allowed Natural Gas to the masses. His son owns it now I think. There is an Airport festival thing going on there soon I hope they roll it out for it this year. I'd love to take my Grands to see it. That thing is beyond fucking awesome. I live in a rural area about 35 miles from Oceana Air station, so seeing Navy jets flying to/from Dare County Bombing range, or just practice flying is normal. There is also aerial spraying of corn/soybean fields as a normal sight/sound. I was riding my bike one day about 3 years ago, and heard the sound that kinda sounded like a crop duster, but it didn't sound like a 300 HP single engine. Kept hearing it, but couldn't see anything through the trees. Got to an open area and saw what it was. Navy E-2 Hawkeye diving down, flying 60-80 feet off the ground for about a mile, then hitting the gas and climbing, going around and doing it again. I suppose they were practicing a carrier wave-off.
About a month later, an E-2 crashed into a cornfield on the Eastern Shore, crew ejected safely, aircraft complete loss. It was mentioned once on the news and never again. I assume they were doing a similar stunt like I witnessed. Posted by: Sweet Terra Firma at July 21, 2024 12:50 PM (V5BDR) 70

The Grumman S2F Tracker was built to replace the Grumman AF-1 Guardian which operated off the carriers as hunter/killer pairs. The Tracker combined both functions into one plane. The bomb bay would carry torpedoes or depth charges.
One of the unique features of the S-2 is the rudder which is actually in two parts. First part is the normal rudder but if the pilots needed more authority the second part could be engaged thus increasing rudder size. One S-2 Tracker was lost off the coast of Vietnam. The last flight I was on was back in 2019 for our daughter's wedding in Vegas. I think we were on Frontier. Lousy flight out but the flight back was worse. Bitterly cold, seats were hard as rocks and we had forgotten to get water and snacks before boarding.
Plus we picked up some sort of bug at one point and ended up being sick for a week after returning home. Not sure I'd fly again unless I was going to get the star treatment and be chauffeured everywhere, first class, all the way. Posted by: Martini Farmer at July 21, 2024 01:01 PM (Q4IgG) 89

Pappy Gunn's home brew strafers lead to the D-1 and D-2 mods for the B-25.
D-1 means the Mitchell is fitted as a strafer: 4 .50s in the bombardier nose with 4 more as package guns on sides. D-2 refers to defensive firepower modifications. A single gun was fitted under a canopy similar to the H/J tail guns. And two waist windows with guns were fitted between wing trailing edge and top turret. These were Pacific only mods. MTO B-25C/Ds had different mods to increase defensive firepower. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 21, 2024 01:08 PM (06nk1) 95

I do have some nice recollections of flying, but it was decades ago. Boarding an L-1011 (pretty sure) in Honolulu for flight to Chicago and connection back to Philly. Plane virtually empty, we're early. Pilot walking toward us. I laughed to myself because I knew damn well what was coming. My wife is dressed nicely, sun kissed face, wearing a hat, looking like she just walked off a Playboy photoshoot. He stops, says hello, how was your vacation, blah, blah, blah. He's obviously 50's, signs of grey, distinguished looking, probably ex-military flyer. The kinda guy that nailed a stew every night the past decade with his looks. He couldn't help but hit on the pretty girl. I just smiled 'cause she's mine but enjoy that look in her eyes. A couple minutes later a stewardess arrives with a bottle of champagne for us, courtesy of the Pilot. Geez, maybe I should add more details about later that night and submit this to Penthouse Letters. Posted by: Divide by Zero at July 21, 2024 01:14 PM (RKVpM) 98

We won't have Olbermann to kick around anymore!
Keith Olbermann, who got fired from MSNBC over a decade ago, claimed he was in talks with NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell and news boss Cesar Conde to return to MSNBC and take over Rachel Maddow’s 9 p.m. time slot, according to a report. Maddow told her viewers on Jan. 31 that she would be taking a hiatus to work on a series of projects, including films, and would be temporarily stepping away from her primetime gig. But any fleeting dream of former “Countdown” host Olbermann returning to MSNBC was squashed when Maddow stepped in personally to veto him as her successor, according to a report from the Daily Beast. - Too crazy for Madcow? Went to NAS North Island for nuke and SERE school, then on to the P-3 RAG (VP-31) at NAS Moffett Field. Upon completion of training, I moved across the field there to an operational P-3C squadron for four years. Back to NAS Whiting Field as an instructor pilot for a couple of years before submitting my resignation letter to fly commercial. Now retired living in Pensacola.
