Posted by: davidt at July 22, 2024 *** By flags with agreed-upon meanings, I'd guess. Later there would have been lamps to flash Morse code, and then radio. Something about the old sailing ships always makes them great subjects for art. Even if the art is definitely a commercial piece that hung in the office of an east India Company executive. This is not to denigrate the piece, which is excellent commercial art, and shows both a nice working harbor, and the power of the State-owned company that fueled the engine of empire.

The level of realistic detail and perspective is incredible especially for such a huge vista. It draws in the viewer as more and more items are revealed on inspection. The colors seem true to nature, not romanticized making the scene feel more real. It is very effective in giving a sense of what the Indian trade entailed and looked like.

“Ketchup” comes from a Chinese word. I think it was a mushroom sauce.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at July 22, 2024 09:48 AM (XHLnT) ++++ Depends on which theory on the origins of ketchup you subscribe to. The Chinese origin is that it comes from "kechiap," which is normal Chinese fish sauce. Mix it in with a new world vegetable - tomatoes - and you get something relatively close to modern ketchup. "Mushroom ketchup" is British and is a totally different think, with no fish component until much, much later. Ketchup is an oddity. It sprang up during the age of empire and has many potential origins. I subscribe to the "China Origin" theory of Chinese fish sauce being blended with other fruits of empire, but there are many potential explanations. ===== The East Indiamen were armed, since they transported valuable cargo. A wise captain saw to it that his crews practiced with the cannons and small arms until they had some skill. Bon Homme Richard had been a French East Indies company ship before being given to John Paul Jones. Taking one would require some effort, or a man o' war that could make a fight a truly bad choice. Old cemetaries are interesting because they often have original pre-settlement trees. There's a couple a botanist friend of mine showed me, we took a special road trip just to see those basically.
The riverboats needed fuel going up the Mississippi, and the Missouri (I think they can get all the way to Great Falls back in the day) and so anything was cleared out along the waterways. Everything. Plus everyone needed to use wood heat. Then, the railroads had an enormous appetite for railroad crossties. They cut down just about everything they could, because they needed the wood What we see in our deciduous hardwood eastern and midwest forests today, is often the botanical equivalent of a new recruit haircut after it grows out for a couple weeks. The cemetary oaks I mentioned earlier, had branches that were bigger than any oak I had ever seen. What was cool, they grew horizontally for quite a ways too. Just enormous trees in good soil. Can you expand on this? Go back to the 2022 election and look at the pro-life v pro-abortion Rs. Little difference with a small bump for pro-life. Abortion is a states rights issue. Don’t like the policy in one state- move to another. In that environment, Democrats love them some abortion right up until birth. It’s axiomatic to say Republicans believe the opposite. They are for shorter timeframes and are for certain exceptions. It is the essence of liberty, where we can disagree as a populace about an issue, but permit the people of each state to decide what they feel is warranted. Republicans also don’t believe in using the federal government as a weapon against those who disagree with them on this issue. It has been decided that abortion is not a constitutional issue, ergo the federal government has almost zero role in it. Democrats, as they have shown many times, want to use the people’s government against them. It is their strongman, their enforcer, their jailer.
So if Democrats and their new lead buffoon want to have that debate, let’s have it. But I dare say there are far more important things on people’s minds Posted by: Truthbomb at July 22, 2024 10:21 AM (TkpK/) 231

Some will not launch rockets, and others can't launch. Some people will not leave the ISS to go home soon or do spacewalks. The originally scheduled Rocket Lab mission, "A Sky Full of SARs," which was scheduled for Saturday, July 20, has been postponed to an unknown date. Our next Electron launch will move to a later date at the request of mission partner Ccapellaspace. So they can complete additional testing. With rockets ready, we’ll move to our next mission in the manifest with Synspective, which will fly next on Electron within the next few weeks." The 4 scheduled Starlink missions by SpaceX have now been postponed several times. The reason is that the FAA needs to give SpaceX approval to launch the rockets. So, the only fixed rocket launch is the Atlas V 551 by ULA, scheduled for July 30, but let's see what the valves are saying on the pad or the Atlas rocket. And no, there is nothing new about the Starliner. In addition, NASA ISS Spacewalk #91 has also been postponed to a not-yet-determined date. We will keep you updated about all the ongoing events here. "Full Responsibility"
LOL, yeah no. What a leftist means here, allow me to translate "This matter is closed, we shall never speak of this again". Is this yet another "Didn't Earn It" ("DEI") hire? Who knows, right. This is a pretty good point here, the election should be a referendum on this, right now everything is falling apart because key leadership positions are held by lunatics. By framing everything around immutable racial or sex characteristics they have winnowed the available pool by political reliability instead of demonstrated competence and integrity. As a consequence a casual observer would tend to believe the very worst stereotypes and have good reason to do so. Thanks a lot, Democrats. Well, I guess it's time again for Trump to remind voters he referred that issue to the states. Those states that want legal abortion can have it. Those that don't want it can forbid it.
- Yep. And I think that makes a good demonstration of our problem. If gun owners won that same decision it would be the biggest victory for 2nd Amendment supporters in 100 years. The pro-abortion folks get that level of victory over something that is nowhere in the Constitution and are furious that baby-killing is removed from federal control. There is no common ground in a culture when the same thing is understood so differently. DC can no longer be trusted with the "ongoing investigation" immunity. Our representatives have to do something about that.
How did this cheese-dick affectation start, anyway? Is it some "law"? Worse, it is contagious and once the local county through state politicos heard it said, they eagerly adopted it. It's poison. Everybody else in local government has a dodge, in schools and taxpayer paid stuff. "We can't comment on personnel matters". Sure, Jan. Of course you couldn't comment on anything, really.
