  • A tiny flaw in Cisco's Smart Software Manager allows anyone to alter any user's password. (Ars Technica)

And by anyone I mean anyone - you don't need to be logged in.

And by any user I mean any user - without logging in you can change the admin password, and then log in.

I don't think the rate of data breaches is going to slow down any time soon.

  • More 9950X benchmarks at various power levels. (WCCFTech)

We already know there's no point running it at 320W, since it offers performance barely better than the default boost power of 230W.

This chart shows that you also don't want to run it at 40W. Below 60W the performance craters. You can probably improve on that by adjusting the clock details, but with the automated settings the sixteen core 9950X runs like a six core 5600X.

  • Checking out the Crucial P310 - a 2TB M.2 2230 SSD. (Serve the Home)

These drives are the size of a postage stamp, and fit in portable devices like the Steam Deck and ultra-slim laptops like Microsoft's Surface line.

This one is QLC and DRAMless, a combination I would generally recommend avoiding, but on these benchmarks it holds up very well. Read speeds up to 7GB per second, and write speeds up to 6GB.

Under sustained heavy write loads it will slow down, but in all other cases it actually looks good.

  • You can now run Windows NT on a PowerMac. (The Register)

I have a couple of PowerMacs in the garage. I'm not really inclined to try this out though.

  • Looking to build a mini-ITX storage server? This motherboard from (random AliExpress vendors) might be what you need. (Liliputing)

For $130 it has a four-coure Intel N100, two M.2 slots, six SATA ports, 10Gb Ethernet, dual 2.5Gb Ethernet, HDMI and DisplayPort, and the usual complement of USB ports.

    And one memory slot.

There may be an eight-core N305 model on the way if you need a little more power.

'Tis Thursday and the weekend is almost here. There's a gun show in a convention center in the western suburbs this weekend, and Miss Linda wants to roam unfettered through the department store outlet only a mile or two away from that, so . . . The problem: The outlet store does not open until noon. I hate the idea of running around in this vicious afternoon heat. Grrrr.

Watching the British Open. Typical weather for Scotland in July. Cold and rainy. I'm discovering why I mostly avoid live coverage and just record programs. Have commercials gotten worse? I'm used to just FF them. I mute the sound but even the visuals are either gross or annoying. Oh well, first world problems. Whichever ad man came up with those VRBO commercials needs to be shot.

19 Hi Fen. Usually cell phone batteries when they start to wear out seem to charge up OK, but they deplete very quickly, or have difficulty with the gauge reading accurately.

Charging is better than it used to be, driven by software. What the cell phone doesn't like is heat. It starts to cook the battery and can cause problems. So the intelligent charging profiles try to kind of ease into things at a slower rate. I try not to use an intensive device (like watching a movie or YT) and charge at the same time. The high temperatures aren't good for longetivity. If you replace your device often maybe it doesn't matter.

I bought a re-furbished cell phone from Walmart, of all places. I wrote the guy and asked about the battery and he said don't worry, and as it turned out in this case he was right. Fast charging isn't always what we want. Your device might have some settings where it will not draw as much juice as fast and/or will charge up more quickly.

28 On iPhone, it might setup a routine where it kind of "hangs" at a certain charge level for a long time, to keep the heat down. It sort of figures out your daily (or nightly) routine. If you get off your schedule, it might sometimes be inconvenient. Can force it to quick charge to 80%. The last 10 to 20% takes quite a while compared to the first 50% or so. 34 I had one cell phone, the battery started to swell and expand, and thus kind of crack the phone case. I forgot about it, stuffed in the console of my car. Some months later it had swelled up so much it looked like an accordion and was about 3 inches thick, if that makes sense. I try to keep it charged up well and then deplete it a little bit. Same with my laptop. If the battery is at 29% and I'm surfing the internet watching movies or something, if I plug that in it starts cooking like a space heater, and can hear the little cooling fan spool up and run.

Usually when laptop batteries get replaced, the integral ones, they are all bloated and swelled from the heat due to discharge (which generates heat) and charging (which generates heat as well).

The reason the cell phone bloated up like that, back in the day when using a cell phone for navigation, it would really strain the power output or something. The phone would be almost hot to the touch. Whatever caused that, doesn't seem to be a problem any longer.

I still use paper maps, because a 3" by 6" screen is BS, it works completely non-intuitive by scrolling to get more detail, it doesn't tell you what road you're on. LOL

41 After almost two weeks the maintenance people finally came to look at my A/C yesterday afternoon about 2 pm. By 3 it was blowing cold. But you know something? I've gotten used to my setup with my window unit and a fan to blow cool air into the bedroom at night. At 5 I turned the central air off and the window unit back on.

I'm curious to see if my power bill is lower next month. The window machine only runs 14 hours a day, compared to the 24 for the central unit.

My new battery powered self propelled mower arrived yesterday. Pleasant experience of cutting without a lot of racket or combustion fumes. Topped off the batteries last night and I'll get a better idea of run time on them today. New battery comes with a USB port so I can actually use it to charge some devices like cell phone, portable sound bar, vape pen, in power outage. Technology marches on in some good ways once in a while.

Yeah, I have a tractor but sitting on that riding around isn't much exercise. Also, the tractor easily uses a gallon of gas at $3.75 while these batteries suck up about .20 cents of electricity to cut the same area. With my portable solar panel the cost to recharge the batteries is zero.

51 On my drive home yesterday I saw two gas stations with $2.99 for regular 87. Most seemed to be $3.07 to $3.14. My usual Exxon station has $3.07, so with my card discount, $2.97. Usually I stick some ethanol-free in there, and that's $3.39. I probably don't see much if any monetary savings with that; my car seems to get about 10% better mileage on E0 than it does on E10.

Maybe, come Jan. & The New Trump Era (I hope!), we'll see less regulation and better prices.

What if FJB's COVID diagnosis is setting him so that he can have "long covid" and thus all of his problems between now and November will be blamed on that?

He resigns or relinquishes the nomination because of that illness and it's also used as an excuse to bring back the COVID panic and lockdown the country in favor of mail-in ballots.

53 I was impressed enough with the battery mowers to buy one over 10 years ago. I used it once, it weighs a ton. I used it the other day, not expecting much. Kept it plugged in the whole time. Golly if it didn't work. Seems like it weighs more.

The LawnBoy is sounding restricted, RPM is too low. Probably needs the exhaust port cleanout. It's 90 and 90 per cent humidity, and open lawn mower surgery was not sounding too fun particularly. So the battery mower to the rescue! It has a ragged cut, but it does the job.

In a central system the only electricity you use is a fan - which is likely in the 10 to 20 watt range. Your window unit probably is in the 150 to 700 watt range. I would guess, without engaging in early morning math your electric bill will be fifty dollars a month higher.

I'm thinking when Wolfus says central air that he does not have his own compressor, that cold refrigerant from some central location is constantly being pushed through the system. That was what my first apartment had. If I wanted cooling all I had to do was turn on the fan motor which had different speed settings. I had no separate bill for electricity.

That's so despicably contemptible... "Was he a marine"?

Stolen Valor is the left's game, but they got more projection than a graduate level textbook in algebraic topology.

It worked, didn't it?

Now the funny part to me is that Vietnam experience was considered a black mark in your life in politics. And then after 9/11, it was suddenly acceptable and HOW DARE YOU! question their service?

80 I'm thinking when Wolfus says central air that he does not have his own compressor, that cold refrigerant from some central location is constantly being pushed through the system. That was what my first apartment had. If I wanted cooling all I had to do was turn on the fan motor which had different speed settings. I had no separate bill for electricity.

No, each apartment has a separate roof-mounted unit with compressor. The fan switch is separate; I can circulate air throughout the two rooms that way. But I turn on the central -- by which I mean, vents in the walls and a compressor outside -- to get cold air. I set it for 75 or so while i'm gone, 70-72 when I'm home. But it will kick on periodically throughout the hot day. My bill last month was $85.

In contrast, the window unit I run at 72 for about ten hours a day, but leave it off for fourteen. The apartment holds the cool air pretty well, too.

81 46 New battery comes with a USB port so I can actually use it to charge some devices like cell phone, portable sound bar, vape pen, in power outage. Technology marches on in some good ways once in a while.

84 Pixy, I didn't know you were an old Mac guy. I have an assortment of older Macintoshes lying around. Currently I'm battling a G4 Quicksilver, which I've determined needs a replacement logic board (which I though was gonna hurt, but I found one on Used Mac for only $16 (America bucks, not your kangaroo money)

I sent you an e-mail a few weeks ago with a photo of my Mac SE loading up the Daily Tech News thread. Hope you got kick out of it, assuming it wasn't relegated to spam

UPDATE: It appears to be one way only. You can charge it through USB, but not take power out of it. I don't get it. More research needed.

87 I built a Mini-ITX file server back in 2012. Used a Jetway NF99FL-525 mobo and a Thermaltake Element Q case. The DVD drive slot was stuffed with six 2.5-inch SATA drives, and it runs FreeNAS on the Atom D525 CPU booted off of a USB FLASH drive. It still works, I use it as a backup for my main NAS.

88 You are so awesome! I don't believe I have read a single thing like that before.
So wonderful to discover somebody with original thoughts on this subject matter.
Seriously.. many thanks for starting this up.
This site is one thing that is needed on the web, someone with some originality!
