  • To avoid sea level rise, some researchers want to put barriers around the world's most vulnerable glaciers to slow them down. (Science)

    Uh.

    What?

In 2008, the Ilulissat Glacier in Greenland had a calving event in which it shed a single iceberg covering three square miles. It sheds 35 billion tons of icebergs in the average year.

And moving glaciers don't leave much of anything in their wake, except rubble.

I mean... Okay, it's not impossible. If you want to build an anti-glacier barrier, go right ahead. Yes, I'll make popcorn, but if you succeed I'll gladly give you credit.

Update: CBD points out in comment #17 that that part of the plan isn't to stop the glaciers moving but to block warm currents that would melt them more quickly. And the part about drilling holes in the ice is to pump out water so they move more slowly. Paragraph five explains it better than the first four.

43 Evening and morning, satellites of the Great Blog! How are you?

An anti-glacier barrier . . . seems to me , even if it worked, the glaciers would build up behind it, creating more and more pressure, until BOOM! and a decade's worth of ice would go streaming away from the poles. Not good.

Unless the barrier were heated somehow, to melt the glaciers . . . but then the resulting melt would increase the sea levels, exactly the kind of thing the enviro-whackos are trying to prevent.

55 I'm not sure we in America have crossed a Rubicon. We've had presidential assassinations, and even attempts on candidates like Teddy Roosevelt and a pres.-elect like FDR. There used to be a "tradition" that presidents elected every twenty years since, what, 1840?, would die in office. Certainly we had Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley; Harding died in office of natural causes, so did FDR, and JFK was shot, as was Reagan. He broke the mold; he did not die in office, and Bush II is fine. F. Joke might croak before he leaves office, though.

61 I wonder what kind of comments I will get when I print out the Trump-Iwo Jima pic on glossy paper and put it up over my desk. Most of the people at my work are horrifically liberal. One has had a notice on his door calling for the impeachment of Bush II since 2004 or even earlier.

63 The difference is that political speech hadn't been shut down, like it is now. It's not just demonizing the candidate. They demonize the supporters too. I am seeing a lot of folks on the internet that are fed up. But the Left hasn't gotten the memo yet. Some of them will get to talk to their boss about why they were cheering on murder. People are being called out for their behavior.

64 Back from my workout. It was not quite as horrible out there as usual: 81 F. instead of 85 or more, and a heat index of only (!) 90 instead of 95. Still, I took it easy.

We're supposed to get rain nearly every day this week. I'll believe it when I feel it.

The local Fox outlet had a minute to remember Shannen Doherty. Despite being way out of the demographic for that show (and I happen to know I wasn't alone), I enjoyed 90210, not least for Shannen and the ongoing drama with Luke Perry as Dylan. Odd that they're both gone now.

Fox TV and, later, the WB did some very innovative and memorable programming, didn't they?

102 - Me? Use clear packing tape?
You want to risk a rift in the space, time continuum?
At the very least I'm liable to spend hours getting it stuck, then unstuck, from one hand to the other.

103 Come to think of it, doing so might violate the Terms Of Service.
We wouldn't want to get the lawyers involved. Forget I said anything.

Delegates vote him into the role on Wednesday and he accepts the nomination on Thursday if past conventions are any guide these days.

105 Thanks for sharing good news. Why are you making a quilt for the Lutheran Church organist?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 15, 2024 06:31 AM (VqDXL)

In our tiny town, everybody is connected some way.
She's a member of our Prayer Shawl group and has been the organist at one (there are five or six) of the Lutheran churches around here for over sixty years. I worked with a bunch of members from there at the Thrift Store, one of whom is giving me a hand with it.

107 90 The Anne Applebaum article in the sidebar is perplexing. I my even have to read it, even though I would rather give no clicks to Atlantic. My problem is I just can't figure out why someone thinks electing Trump is the end of the American Republic. Lower taxes and fewer regulations do that?
Posted by: Huck Follywood at July 15, 2024 06:28 AM (hj1Oi)

Thanks for pointing it out. I had missed that. She does not in any way answer your questions!

Reasons not to worry about the plan she sketches out:

She's promoting "Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Vice President Harris" LOLOLOLOL

and no one reads The Atlantic.
