The Optimistic Quote of The Day

Quote I

"We've been through a lot of simulations...and I think where we are right now…I feel confident that if we had to, if there was a problem with the International Space Station, we could get in our spacecraft, we could undock, talk to our team and, and figure out the best way to come home." The ONT does not recommend tour bus rides in India.

BUS PLUMMET Watch horror moment passenger films tourist bus veering off road and plunging down gorge leaving two children dead
Watch the above video to see the final moments before the horror crash

CHILLING footage has captured the moment a tourist bus lost control and plunged down a gorge in a horrific road accident in India.

The fatal crash, caught on camera by an onboard passenger, has so far killed two children and severely injured 20 other people.

If Ted Kennedy was alive he would be a perfect candidate for tour bus driver.

Some people go to Arizona to escape cold and snowy winters. Some just want to go to The Poozeum.

WHAT'S A POOZEUM?!
The Poozeum is an extraordinary FREE museum and gift shop located in the heart of Williams, Arizona – The Gateway to the Grand Canyon! Visitors will immerse themselves in the fascinating world of coprolites, or fossilized poop, while indulging in an experience that goes beyond the ordinary – it's instructive entertainment at its finest, and is suitable for visitors of all ages.

Marvel at the sheer magnitude of thousands of real fossilized feces, including the eye-wateringly huge “Barnum” – the largest ever discovered! Snap unforgettable selfies next to a 4-foot-wide titanosaur poop replica, explore coprolite wonders through vibrant carnival banners, and be awestruck by "The Stinker" – a bronze masterpiece capturing the whimsy of a thoughtful T. rex perched on a toilet.

Women accused of murdering alleged ‘sugar daddy,’ using his severed — and still missing — thumb to make app purchases

Police have arrested and now charged two women, Tiffany Taylor Gray and Audrey Miller, for the April murder of Fasil Teklemariam, a 53-year-old man from Washington, D.C., who was hit over the head, stabbed repeatedly and then had his thumb cut off and allegedly used by his killers to access his accounts and spend his money on Uber ride-shares, marijuana and alcohol.

I had/have to keep my albums in band name alphabetical order, then album release date when there are multiple albums of a group (like Jefferson Airplane/Starship, plus solo offshoots, and Ten Years After). If I didn't, I could never find a particular album when I wanted it. It's easily a couple a hundred albums plus, heavy on the plus.

But Fragile is a great album, with so many good songs. I really enjoy 'Heart of the Sunrise'.

If the Dems knife the both of them, then they have to start fresh with campaign donations. Without either on the ballot, campaign monies for Biden/Harris cannot be used by the new ticket.

These certainly are interesting times. I'd like a little less interesting, thankyouverymuch.

Yeah, there was/is a culture or ethnicity that originated there maybe, you fought for it, you won it, fair enough that is the Way Of The World. The effort deserves recognition. You are a Nation.
God did not 'bless you', there is no further religious meaning beyond simple territorial conquest and consolidation. Again, fair enough, it is the Way Of The World. If Israelis perceive a persistent threat in an aggressor, well then they can do whatever it is they need to do.
None of this is complex. I really, truly, personally, genuinely, believe monotheism did not handle its collision with Darwinism and Modern Science very well. I'm working on this in my Orthodox Church, and I'm not too inclined to play touchy-feely with so-called Jews obsessed with obsolete ideations.

It is fascinating.

Some are publicly saying Joe Must Go! But most of these are low ranking Dems hoping to earn some cred when Joe Does Go to shore-up their election or re-election chances in their purple districts and states.

Some are publicly saying We Must Support Joe Forever! These are hedging their bets; they do not want to suffer the Wrath of Joe is he does not go. They will get on the Joe Must Go bandwagon when they calculate it is totally safe to do so.

The bulk of the Dems are terrified, IMHO. They want Joe To Go, ASAP. But are waiting to see if there will be Safety In Numbers against the Wrath of Joe if he does not go. They know that if they sign-on to a failed attempt to force JoeJillHunter out, JoeJillHunter will use every tool available to the President and Party Nominee to get revenge. Not a good position to be in as a senior Dem Representative or Senator with a goal of remaining in office until age 105.

152 Heritage Foundation working on election legal challenges in case Biden pulled from DNC nomination
https://t.co/bNEDcNKiWf

Heritage has already identified multiple states in which a switch away from Biden before or after the nomination could mean serious trouble for the Democratic Party.
Heritage points out that many states — including swing states such as Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin — might not allow a replacement on the ballot.
Wisconsin does not allow a candidate's name to be withdrawn from the ballot except due to death. Nevada allows changes to its ballot up until 5:00pm on the fourth Friday of June in the election year — it also allows special consideration for if nominees die or are determined to be mentally unable to proceed.
Other states have restrictions on timing and the reason for withdrawal from ballots, while others have no procedures on the books, making the prospect of switching Biden out an even more perilous legal minefield.

160 On the FJB theme, theory: I don't know if Joe picked Kamala or she was foisted on him but I go along that she was insurance that Biden would not be removed by whatever means. She was 'black' and a woman so that placated a large number of the base. However she was never meant to be the First Woman nor the First Black Woman president, that was reserved for another/others.

I read something today that was both quite chilling and , I think, quite possibly a way out for the Democrat Party dilemma. Barack Obama is Biden's "running mate" as VP. It's all a nod and a wink. Once elected and inaugurated, Biden resigns, and Barack is President. The amendment for Presidential term limits only states that someone can only STAND for election two times, being elected both times, limiting an "elected" President to two terms.. Nothing would prohibit Obama from being Pedo Joe's running mate, and then becoming President when Joe resigns.

Scary, huh? Would keep the asshole leftish Democrats in the fold for the election.

He proclaimed his everlasting loyalty to Biden for 12 minutes. (Yawn)

I can't figure why Fetterman wanted to do that appearance. What's in it for him? He acknowledged that he knew his listeners on FOX were millions of conservative Republicans.

His message is hardly going to resonate with that audience. He went on & on about Biden being one of our greatest presidents; all Biden's accomplishments, etc.

He did say that Trump was going to draw a yuuge crowd in Butler, PA, & that he expected PA to be very close in Nov.

He's worked his horrific stroke impairments all the way down to a slight stutter now, btw. Nothing else. Good for him.

They combined.

Alexander Campbell founded the American Restoration Movement in the early 19th century. He was pretty hardcore early on but became a little more ecumenical later in life so his movement split into the Churches of Christ and the Disciples of Christ of which Campbell mostly associated with the Disciples.

Meanwhile a guy name Barton Stone was spreading a gospel restoration message of his own and his churches became The Christian Church. Eventually Stone and Campbell joined forces and later on the Disciples and Christian Church formally united sometime in the 20th Century.

The Disciples went all in on liberalism.

427 Speaking of Italian. There are records about this and for sure there’s a website that lists the most common foreign language spoken at home in US household over the years. In the year, I was born the most common spoken foreign language at home in the United States was Italian. Now I think it is around nine or ninth or tenth.

They also say that Italian is almost dead as a language in this country. It is good that Italian immigrants made sure their kids spoke English, but is also kind of sad to me, They should’ve passed it on as a second language. It is a beautiful language. They legitimately say Italian is almost gone here.

That is unusual indeed - I don't think there's a German idiomatic expression that features that wording. Could it be from Deutsch fans of the Ispettore looking for a particular line from the series?

431 Quint -that is depressing. I figured Italian would have lingered on further here, and it's sad to see it going. Then, of course, you've got the reverse situation, where there are more Portuguese speakers in the Americas than in Portugal itself.

I wonder if it was a matter of dialect with Italian? Would families that spoke the Calabrian dialect, for example, feel a pressure from academic Italian and Italian language media to move away from their preferred forms of discourse?

Posted by: Quint at July 11, 2024 01:56 AM (Fy2d7)

435 431, I’m not sure about that one about Calabrian. I’m no expert by any means, but in my understanding, the vast majority of Italian immigrants to the US came from Calabria, Sicily basically southern Italy. Sure, northern Italian cuisine had a hey day in the 90s, but what Americans have traditionally considered to be Italian is much closer to the food of southern Italy or at least the immigrants from that area.

Many people say the general dialect in Latin America is much closer to that of southern Spain, the region of Andalusia, than other parts of Spain. They say the reason for this is it was the Southern Spaniards, who came to the Americas on the boats. A lot of these overarching themes can seem really simple, but I think there is something to it. If you look at the Spanish spoken in Andulacia, it is much closer to Latin American Spanish than the Spanish spoken in Madrid.

436 The French don’t move here en masse. You have to give them at least that much credit. Even the Portuguese moved here in a major way years ago. I have heard the Greeks since so many to America that half of all Greeks live in America.

By the way, the French do move to the UK like everyone else. The French economy is stagnant. The only one worse is Spain even people that love Spain will tell you their economy is terrible and is a horrible place to try to get a job no matter how much people love visiting.

That does seem to be the evolution. I wonder how many customs and beliefs persist despite long intervals. For example. my mother's family has lived here for nearly three hundred years, and they managed to assimilate quite well in that time.

But there were practices, beliefs, recipes, and the like that I now recognize were holdovers from Baden-Wurtemberg that came up again and again, although without them being seen as from the Old Country.

One example - my Mom was a diehard Protestant, yet when she saw a black cat cross the road in front of her, she would make the sign of the cross. (In a weird way, doing a circle with each of the four points.) She didn't see this as religious, or foreign, but simply something that "people did" to avoid bad luck.

440 One of the most significant finds to have emerged from this period in recent years is undoubtedly the bronze drinking vessel near the village of Kladina in Eastern Bohemia that dates back to around 1,000 BC. Traces of the liquid that were stored in the vessel allowed archaeologists to reconstruct this several thousand year old drink, which turned out to be a type of herbal millet beer.

Chemist Lukáš Kučera from the University of Olomouc, who was able to brew this ancient beverage, described what it tastes like to Czech Radio last year.

“The beer has a characteristic acidic flavour that will remind you of cider or wine, rather than beer.

It has the colour of beer, it smells like cider and tastes a bit like lemon.”

444 442, good point They held at least half the nation at one point, not the nation, but the continent. They sold it cheap too, but I guess they had the reasons.

People also sleep on the French making hay in Mexico, right up till the American Civil War.

The French played a major part in North America, but they seemed to play their hand poorly. They are great at infiltrating areas as they have done so all over the globe. But they have been beaten back for many years in East Asia, and now in Africa, Not that that is a good thing regarding Africa.

In someways the French expansion around the globe is more interesting than the British expansion. Many places even today still are happy to be under control or at least part of the French speaking world. But it looks like internationally the anti-western forces are more anti-French than even anti-American. You see in Africa countries that are switching official languages from French to English, But they are aligning with China and Russia, so we shouldn’t be too happy about that.

445 Speaking of booze, Cider which I love is a type of wine. It is made from fermented fruit, so it is a wine. Sakai Is often called by many “rice wine”. But it is made from grain, from fermented rice so it is actually a type of beer.

Posted by: 13times at July 11, 2024 03:17 AM (n/VGw)

447 I know the French do their thing in Africa because they think they are trying to hold back Isis. That’s a good reason and I respect them for at least trying to do that. But there’s a part of me that says the western world should give up on Africa and let China, Russia, and India take over. The western world has spent untold billions on Africa since the 1950s and very little has been accomplished. Even liberal writers who actually studied that regions say the exact same thing that is where I’m getting it from.

There is a point when you should say enough is enough. You’re not going to fix a place that doesn’t want to be fixed and if you fly a French flag or later, they’re going to tear it down and burn it. They would do the same to Americans to the Brits. I say leave it to the Chinese and Russians because I guarantee sooner or later the people were going to turn on them for the same reasons they turned on the West. Some things simply can’t be fixed.

My mother’s family were apple growers and my mom talked about applejack, but I’ve never tried a true homemade cider. Shame on me! Those grandparents were teetotaler‘s and I doubt they brewed booze.

451 My parents dabbled with wine-making, in the 70s and 80s. One sibling brewed beer as a hobby.

But I've never cared much for either beer or wine, so couldn't say whether any of it was 'good' or 'bad'.

452 Alcohol often inspires creativity. When one of my cousins was in Pharmacy school, he convinced a few of his friends to help him built (and conceal) what was essentially a still in one of the labs where he and other more senior students had keys and unquestioned access. They actually pulled it off, but their brewing in such a high-tech environment resulted in the liquor being so high proof that they didn't dare to drink it.

My cousin summed it up as, "we were trying for shine but made rocket fuel." Still, it was quite a stunt, and doing it right under the noses of their professors was a major achievement.

454 One of my favorite stories is one of the major labs in the US started making George Washington’s famous recipe for eggnog. If you google the recipe, you can easily find it and it is very full of booze. These medical laboratory people would make it from time to time and infuse it with salmonella just to learn how long it would take for the alcohol to kill the salmonella. They learn that even if they put salmonella into the recipe, the booze would kill it off over a period of time. Then they would drink the eggnog as if you kept it cool that egg dog would keep a long long time like up to a year or more, And they did raw eggs.

Not sure if this story means anything, but I love history, Booze, And booze history.

I have made the George Washington eggnog recipe a few times for Christmas.

457 My bad I made a mistake there. The booze killed off the salmonella within a few weeks. The high alcohol eggnog would last and be OK to drink for a year or so.

Posted by: Quint at July 11, 2024 03:50 AM (Fy2d7)

458 And they would drink the eggnog at every Christmas. Some people are still afraid of raw eggs, which is weird because unless you are majorly immunocompromised, that is not a concern. It would be like being afraid of pork that isn’t well done sure that made sense in 1950 but not today.

I don’t mind people that slightly cooked the eggs for egg dog, but it isn’t to make them safer. If you do it exactly right, it might actually be better than raw because raw can give a flavor some don’t like. Again, let’s be honest this is America and 99.9% of people buy eggnog from a store.

Posted by: Quint at July 11, 2024 03:52 AM (Fy2d7)

459 Quint, Pat Conroy came out with a cookbook a short while back, and he included Washington's recipe for punch. And it was very much in keeping with the egg nog you describe - if it was ready to hand and brewed or distilled, it made its way into the punch.

The Founders' generation definitely had a higher tolerance for liquor than most people do today - my impression is that, at least in part, it's a carry-over effect from the need to find a safe substitute for water, which seems to have been a concern even with the Puritans who settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and one reason why even children of the era drank low-alcohol brews.

George Washington did like his boobs. There’s no question about that. I re-created the George Washington eggnog a few times and did it exactly to the recipe as he prescribed specific things like Jamaican rum, Spain, Sherry, and I think Madeira from the island of Madeira.

It is fun to re-create history and if you can drink it so much the better. The funny thing about George Washington is, I don’t think people study him enough. We all know him and love him, but we don’t study him enough. There is a crap load you can learn about life and how to live it if you spend more time studying George Washington. That’s just my opinion.
