26 Re: my no. 11, the resemblance to a stage set is accentuated by the lighting, which highlights the bishop's face and the white portions of the outfit worn by the maid or housekeeper. The big screen reflects a lot of light as well. One imagines the footlights are just beyond the lower edge of the painting.

The bishop may be suffering from gout. One method to alleviate that, I think, was to elevate the afflicted foot.

27 The sniper is behind the easel...

During the Franco-Prussian War, Vibert became a sharpshooter and was wounded at the battle of Malmaison in October 1870.[2] In recognition of his sacrifice, he was awarded a Knight in France's Legion of Honour on 18 June 1870,[3] which was upgraded to the Legion of Honour rank of Officer on 18 February 1882.[4]

Actual bishops of the Catholic church considered this artist to be anti-clerical, and kept his work from being exhibited.

I'll bet Fen would have known that.

118 Interesting approach in the painting. The Bishop inhabits a small, bright space and enjoys simple pleasures of tea and books. But the huge dark room and worn carpet hints at earlier grandeur and activity. It is a startling contrast. The Bishop's life has contracted to to this pleasant, comfortable existence. Is it just the prelate or does this say something about the power of the church in the world? That bright screen captures the viewer's attention at first but then you start to notice the other details. Then the questions or suppositions begin.

BTW, Vibert did a series of scenes with church officers in rather domestic situations and shows a great sense of humor in them. Worth a look.

Imagine, if you will, a planet the size of Neptune. Now, imagine that it's smaller by some undeclared amount. Really, it makes you question whether it should be classified a planet at all. Although the shrinkage may have been caused by climate change here on Earth. -- Neil deLardasse Tyson

143 "mini-Neptune-sized" implies that many planets have been found with a radius of about twice Earth's radius (eight times volume), maybe ten times mass. Neptune is 17 times Earth mass and 3.9 times Earth radius.
There is a gap between the mini-Neptune class and the super-Earth class. Super-Earths (very very common) cluster 1.5 Earth mass and less than twice Earth radius. Still large but aren't coated in all the ices and hydrogen as a (mini-)Neptune.

From Politico.

NEW YORK — President Joe Biden has a new problem: a competitive race in deep blue New York.

Elected officials, union leaders and political consultants are panicking over polls showing a steady erosion of Biden’s support in a state he won by 23 points four years ago. They’re so worried they’ve been trying to convince the Biden team to pour resources into New York to shore up his campaign and boost Democrats running in a half-dozen swing districts that could determine control of the House.

Nope. You do you. I am firm in the belief that most bands who are widely "regarded", like - but not exclusively - Rush, are that way because everybody knows that they're just so, so good but they never actually listen to them.

Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Yes, etc. are the same. At least my favorite band is in a more peripheral genre and, at least previously, caught tons of flack even there.

224 Democratic Socialists Rescind Endorsement of AOC. Congrats AOC! Welcome to the Establishment!

@jacobkornbluh The DSA rescinds endorsement of AOC because she hosted an online panel discussion with two leading Jewish experts on antisemitism.

“This sponsorship is a deep betrayal to all those who’ve risked their welfare to fight Israeli apartheid and genocide.”

Yikes! I did not realize how overtly committed they are to antisemitism! Aoc gets the boot for talking to jews about antisemitism.

DSA suddenly got large and well-funded around 2014 or so. The influx of funds coincided with Putin's campaign against Ukraine and then Trump's campaign.

Many members of DSA identify as communists, and they admire not just Putin and Russia, but also North Korea. I hadn't realized that antisemitism was so deeply embedded in DSA and other groups. They'll tell you they're just anti-Israel, but their words and actions - like this one - show otherwise.

I've seen several videos where blacks are asked about their ability to get ID, where they use it and how they vote. The Democrat's narrative about them is full on racist. But the promise of free shit every year is a strong incentive to vote for that person.

I think that's beginning to change... slowly. The influx of illegals and the Democrats shifting over to them as the preferred minority class is pissing the blacks off to no end.

Overrated albums perhaps, but the Beatles had genuine talent if you like rock/pop intersection music.

Also George Martin has something to do with it as his recordings are far better sounding than a lot of the sixties trash producers. Berry Gordy at MoTown was a similar genius record producer where 60's dinky 4 Track recordings still sound great in a true hi fi era.

Read with some amusement about an early Bitcoin broker that collapsed when 85 percent of the bitcoins were stolen and never recovered. The remaining 15 percent of bitcoin investments ended up making all investors whole when the receivers finally closed up shop. That appreciation was in a decade or so.

Expect to hear very little about the shooting in Kentucky from this week. Here’s why: 7 people were shot and it appears this was only possible because a left wing Judge named Kathleen Lape gave a child rapist probation and no jail time.

The shooter is reportedly Chase Garvey. He’s a convicted child rapist who once lured a 13 year old from Snapchat to rape her. Left wing Judge Kathleen Lape gave him only 5 years of probation. It gets even worse though because she had a second chance to jail him.
Chase violated probation and she still only gave him 30 days in county jail when she could have given him a 5 year sentence. He should have been sentenced to much worse than that from the start but even just enforcing his full 5 year jail sentence for violating probation would’ve saved 7 people from being shot and 4 people wouldn’t be dead right now.

368 You know how the left intends to tax people on unrealized gains? That is why I recommend Silver Eagles, and Gold Eagles: A Silver Eagle is one dollar, no matter the price of Silver, a gold Eagle is 50 dollars: it says so right on the coin. So there is no unrealized gain with them. Same is true of 1964 and earlier dimes, quarters and half dollars. You accumulate wealth with no tax consequences unless you sell them. They are also nice for barter.

Four 1964 quarters, plus four 1964 dimes have one ounce of silver in them, which is worth about $32.

There is a youtube from a Boston concert soundcheck of More Than a Feeling. Delp's voice quite frankly sucked and the musicianship just was not there. Never saw them live but made me wonder if they were just a studio band that relied on fixing all the errors in the control box rather than musicianship.

As mentioned above, it's an investment in operation outside of the system. It's probably going to seem like splitting hairs since people view bitcoin as a type of money, but it's not. That's the "other than money" element that people are buying, and some people make money off of it and some people lose money off of it.

Sure. Vigorous primaries against incumbents are generally rare, and even more rare for incumbent presidents.

But it's obvious that many major power brokers didn't like Biden, didn't think he could win before the primary, and were pushing for him to get out as early as last year.

They chose to try and get rid of him through back channel pushing instead of the primary process. Because they don't think the people should have a say.

It will be scripted. First or second Joe will select a reporter who has agreed to ask a question about his debate performance and if he's still running. A friendly set-up for Joe. Joe will repeat he had bad night and is in the race all the way. Then he'll burn time reciting his standard anti-Trump stump speech. When he gets more questions about the debate, unscripted, he'll say he already answered them, then say he will only take questions about other topics.

Could work. Depends on how frequently he goes head-down for a long time reading his note cards and the binder that will be on the podium before he enters. And on him not going into Blank Brandon-face mode.

444 Right, but people use the word "investing" when it ain't no such thing. Gold, for instance, isn't an investment either. Gold is money. It is more or less a bet against the dollar, in terms of a currency. It is a form of currency speculation for Americans in that sense.

Bitcoin is definitely no investment. Recognize it for what it is, it's not a criticism of bitcoin, just an observation on the nomenclature. Words mean things.

-

Words like investment definitely mean things, similar to someone buying Bitcoin at $600 and - if someone wanted to purchase it in an exchange (and they do) - it now it being worth $57K to the original buyer.
