A friend of mine told me decades ago that he loosens that screw-top very slightly once the jar is sealed and the lid isn't coming off without applying some good pressure. It allows any moisture to evaporate and not cause rust like that.

Stainless, like any other steel can rust or corrode in the right conditions. As other have said, a lot of it depends on the specific alloy as those with more chromium in it are more resistant to rust.
Stainless alloys aused in the marine industry as salt water are usually the most resistant and ocean environments are huge rust promoters. That being said, Chinese steel by and large sux in quality. Posted by: whig at July 14, 2024 02:07 PM (mIs2x) 27

Working with stainless steel a lot at Dow Chemical stainless can still rust. Doesn't matter if its a hybrid or300/400 grade stainless. Stainless can rust if it has been touching regular carbon steel(cross contamination) or water combined with acidic contents which is probably why that lid rusted. I'm sure the lid isn't "food grade" stainless(bet it has a higher carbon content) so it rusted faster.
Posted by: JROD at July 14, 2024 02:09 PM (IlL6s) 38
BTW, don't want rust, try using something like vaseline, oil, etc. on the surface. No air and moisture getting to the surface of the steel--no rust.

There are different types of stainless steel. 316 is one of the most corrosion resistant. However it work hardens instantly and is therefore difficult to form and even worse to machine. Titanium is easier to machine. Guns are not made from difficult to machine grades of stainless and are subject to corrosion, though less so than alloy steel.

Yes, the rings are unnecessary once the can is sealed. If the seal fails, leaving the ring on can help hide that fact but wont help the food stay safe. This is usually for different kinds of foods. Jams and jellies are often sealed this way; theyre so full of sugar they dont need the full sealing process. That said, its fallen out of favor because (supposedly) the wax can shrink over time, letting moisture in, and the moisture on top can dilute the sugar on top, making a great place for things to grow! Most stainless has chromium added to the alloy (generally starting around 10.5%), and nickel. The 300 series are known as austenitic alloys. There are a few alloys (H1, H2, and LC2000 come to mind) that replace the carbon with nitrogen, and are about as rust-proof as we know how to make steel at this point. The 300 series are non-magnetic. The 400 series (known as ferritic alloys) are magnetic. Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 14, 2024 02:23 PM (LJYWu) 108

82 Stainless Steel is supposed to minus the Fe, yes?
--- No, SS is still mostly Fe. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of grades of SS. That lid doesn't fit the definition of SS at all. It looks like mild steel that has been plated to prevent rust. SS knives will often exhibit a little bit of rust on them because SS doesn't hold an edge worth a shit so they lower the nickel content to get a better edge but this make it not perfectly rust proof. You can buy 316 and 305 SS and fabricate things out of it, and it will not rust at all (even if exposed to acid) except where is was welded (the alloy separates out and exposes Fe). Engineers will try to give you the best mix of properties, but there is always a compromise. Posted by: Lemmiwinks at July 14, 2024 02:34 PM (OCc3z) 144

I trudged all over the hotel looking for a vending or ice machine with a bottle opener. There were none. I went to the hotel front desk and restaurant for a bottle opener and neither had one.
I discovered this while in New Orleans a couple of years ago. Didnt have my combo knife because Id flown, without checked luggage. Discovered that bottle openers in convenience stores are stupidly expensive. Ended up finding a cheap refrigerator magnet bottle opener in the shape of a saxophone in their tourist section. Commonly SS corrosion involves acidic solutions containing chloride or other halide (fluoride is the most potent but unlikely in food LOL). So brine or other high salt content solution can be a problem. Normally SS is pretty resistant - sulfuric acid is transported in SS road tankers as is food grade phosphoric acid.

With the MFM running cover on all of the left's verbal and written attacks on Trump and his voters and their still not-insubstantial hold on the minds of over half of the country, I expect them to begin making the case that an attack like this is bound to happen again, and that, if Trump is elected, violence will explode across the country. You can refrigerate the left overs for a few days but that's about it.
That depends a whole lot on what youre canning. Jams, jellies, ketchups, most relishes, anything thats either high sugar or high acid or both, will keep for a long time. I was thinking about doing this with some store-bought Raniers this year. I've just got some old Betty Crocker and similar books that are great and will guide me fine, butt do you have anything in particular you followed or something you learned?
Posted by: Moron Robbie - FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT at July 14, 2024 03:17 PM (08Sk0) No, not really. I got 3-4 quarts of cherries, 5 cups of sugar, a shot of lemon juice and a half a glug of vanilla essence. This is a typical recipe for jam. the hard part is getting it to jelly right, and that requires temperature reading or good eye for how it comes off the wooden spoon. You can also drizzle it on a cold plate, but that never seems to work for me for some reason in a hot kitchen. I cooked the cherries until they foamed, dumped the sugar, pectin and lemon in, brought it back to a hard boil, and stirred it until it got to the right temperature on my candy thermometer, and added vanilla Sure Jell pectin has a recipe booklet and that shows a good reliable recipe for a lot of fruits. #Trump, audio analysis reveals 0.22 seconds between the impact and the rifle report
1037 HealthRanger @HealthRanger SHOOTER DISTANCE CALCULATION BASED ON SOUND: The speed of sound, give or take based on ambient conditions, is 1,125 fps (feet per second). The speed of a 5.56 rifle round, give or take, is around 2,500 fps from a typical 16" rifle barrel, although it slows immediately after leaving the barrel and gets slower the farther it travels. We could hear from the reports that this was a semi-automatic rifle, not a bolt-action, so the barrel length was likely 16" or 18" at most. If we are recording the event very close to the point of impact, then we will hear the impact of the bullet first, followed by the report of the rifle shot. The time between these two audio events gives us a fairly accurate answer of the distance of the shooter. In the case of the assassination attempt on #Trump, audio analysis reveals 0.22 seconds between the impact and the rifle report (I just checked this myself). If it's true the SS was understaffed trying to protect PDT then, the mistakes can be explained through exhaustion. The SS has to not only protect the day of, they also have to scout venues ahead of a rally. If they're not only scouting but also protecting it's a recipe for a disaster such as occurred yesterday. People who are worn out due to stress make poor decisions. It doesn't matter how professional one is, it's going to happen. If indeed the SS is understaffed for PDT, then I'd say the people in charge were perfectly content to put in play the conditions needed for an attempt on PDT's life. Unfortunately, I think it's quite common. Hoffman has many millions to spend, and seems to want to be more involved than simply writing checks. How 'Project Birmingham' Spread Misinformation In The 2017 Alabama Senate Election "[Project Birmingham] was a disinformation campaign that really resembled some of the tactics that were used by the Russians in 2016 involving fake Facebook messages. Twitter was used as well. And the idea was to undermine the support for Roy Moore and to bolster the support for Doug Jones using social media in a way that was, frankly, quite deceptive. So the definitive account of this, at least as far as we've been able to turn up, is a document that was handed out at a secret meeting here in Washington back in September. And what they were trying to do is figure out, you know, what would make people vote either for Jones or against Roy Moore? For example, arguably the most controversial tactic that's in the document speaks about creating fake evidence - what they call a false flag - that Russian bots were supporting Roy Moore.. . The house is poorly insulated. It will be harder to work on that. I'm going to replace all the windows too.
Posted by: Notsothoreau ======= Sad to say but the easiest way to reinsulate exterior walls is the remove the interior drywall and if diy (use rockwool R15 or some such) and if no exterior vapor/wind barrier exists, use good ole tarpaper (30 lb preferable but 15lb is ok)next to the siding on the exterior. You can also seal gaps in the exterior siding that way. Mineral wool insulation is impervious to water, cannot mold, critters including termites hate, hate, the stuff as it acts like diatomaceous earth on their shells, and it denser than fiberglass adding some sound as well as heat/cold insulation. Easy to DIY. The alternative is spray foam which is not really diy and creates some noxious odors for about the just slightly more R value. Posted by: whig at July 14, 2024 04:05 PM (mIs2x) 559

Posted by: Nova Local at July 14, 2024 03:48 PM (exHjb) You cannot criticize me until you attend a cop’s funeral. Actually, even then, people like you should be shot to death by police. Posted by: You're On Your Own Nobody Is Coming To Save You at July 14, 2024 04:14 PM (/U5Yz) They are 100% factually and objectively correct. Trump's "rhetoric" goes against the blob. The blob meets all challenges to its authority as an existential threat, which automatically merits violence. Trump's rhetoric therefore causes violence. Trump's Violent Rhetoric. I guess this is the live thread...
One thing I got wrong, I thought the man who was killed was on the bleacher to the left. Apparently he was on the bleacher to the right, so the shot that hit him looks to me to be way off target... if Trump was the target. Lots still unfolding..... I'm very, very far from an expert in such things, but aren't snipers generally going for a shoot-and-scoot approach? You get your one shot, then you roll up and GTFO.
so an assassin who doesn't care about scooting is likely to mess up on the follow up shots, when everything is helter skelter and targets are moving all over... because those are difficult, which is why actual professional military snipers don't do that... I really have no idea Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 14, 2024 04:23 PM (BAEGB) 582

@CollinRugg BREAKING: A local police officer found the Trump gunman but retreated down the ladder after the suspect pointed the rifle at him. According to the Associated Press, the suspect was discovered by an officer who retreated, allowing the suspect to fire at Trump. "Rallygoers noticed a man climbing to the roof of a nearby building and warned local police, according to two law enforcement officials," the AP reported. "One local police officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer. The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump." "588 Guy could've registered as Republican so he could fuck up the primary vote."
Bethel Park is a very Republican area at the southern edge of Allegheny County. There are so few Democrats that the Democratic Party did not even field a candidate in the 40th House of Representatives district in which the shooter lived, in the April 2024 primaries. Many very partisan Democrats in closed primary states register as Republicans in these Republican dominated areas so they can spoil the outcomes of Republican primaries. They think of themselves as genius political strategists. Posted by: 10x25mm at July 14, 2024 05:16 PM (cnCff) 591
The magnetic (ferritic, e.g. AISI 430) stainless steel grades do not perform well in acetic acid (vinegar) service. The nonmagnetic (austenitic, e.g. AISI 304) stainless steels do perform well in acetic acid service, but only if they have been passivated after final forming and machining operations.
Austenitic stainlesses usually have 8% or more nickel, a very expensive alloying element. Passivating is an expensive and time consuming surface chemical treatment that produces some toxic waste. So the manufacturer thrifted your jar lid. Posted by: 10x25mm at July 14, 2024 05:22 PM (cnCff) 592

You can use the echoes recorded off of other flat surfaces to actually triangulate a firing position and therefore the time of flight. Posted by: pawn at July 14, 2024 06:08 PM (QB+5g) 594
