Stainless Steel my ass!

Well, I guess in China, "stainless steel" is a bit different than our domestic stuff.

Okay...the jar is used to store pickled onions, and that is an acidic environment. But still...do I really have to move to Pittsburgh or the Ruhr or Yoshida?

14 A friend of mine told me decades ago that he loosens that screw-top very slightly once the jar is sealed and the lid isn't coming off without applying some good pressure. It allows any moisture to evaporate and not cause rust like that.

26 Stainless, like any other steel can rust or corrode in the right conditions. As other have said, a lot of it depends on the specific alloy as those with more chromium in it are more resistant to rust.
Stainless alloys aused in the marine industry as salt water are usually the most resistant and ocean environments are huge rust promoters.

That being said, Chinese steel by and large sux in quality.

37 Working with stainless steel a lot at Dow Chemical stainless can still rust. Doesn't matter if its a hybrid or300/400 grade stainless. Stainless can rust if it has been touching regular carbon steel(cross contamination) or water combined with acidic contents which is probably why that lid rusted. I'm sure the lid isn't "food grade" stainless(bet it has a higher carbon content) so it rusted faster.

49 There are different types of stainless steel. 316 is one of the most corrosion resistant. However it work hardens instantly and is therefore difficult to form and even worse to machine. Titanium is easier to machine. Guns are not made from difficult to machine grades of stainless and are subject to corrosion, though less so than alloy steel.

Yes, the rings are unnecessary once the can is sealed. If the seal fails, leaving the ring on can help hide that fact but won’t help the food stay safe.

I do put rings on if I’m traveling with canned foods, just to protect them from bouncing around. But I always remove them again before giving them away.

This is usually for different kinds of foods. Jams and jellies are often sealed this way; they’re so full of sugar they don’t need the full sealing process.

That said, it’s fallen out of favor because (supposedly) the wax can shrink over time, letting moisture in, and the moisture on top can dilute the sugar on top, making a great place for things to grow!

The work involved in saving a canning ring probably isn’t worth it: I, at least, end up with a lot of rings, because they don’t need to be left on the can and unlike the seals they can be re-used. Every once in a while I go through all the rings and only keep the best.

I’m sure some day I’ll regret it when canning rings become the next unit of monetary exchange.

Steel is ferrous (i.e. mostly iron) and carbon. Most stainless has chromium added to the alloy (generally starting around 10.5%), and nickel. The 300 series are known as austenitic alloys.

There are a few alloys (H1, H2, and LC2000 come to mind) that replace the carbon with nitrogen, and are about as rust-proof as we know how to make steel at this point.

The 300 series are non-magnetic. The 400 series (known as ferritic alloys) are magnetic.

No, SS is still mostly Fe. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of grades of SS. That lid doesn't fit the definition of SS at all. It looks like mild steel that has been plated to prevent rust. SS knives will often exhibit a little bit of rust on them because SS doesn't hold an edge worth a shit so they lower the nickel content to get a better edge but this make it not perfectly rust proof.

You can buy 316 and 305 SS and fabricate things out of it, and it will not rust at all (even if exposed to acid) except where is was welded (the alloy separates out and exposes Fe). Engineers will try to give you the best mix of properties, but there is always a compromise.

Chinee metallurgy is shit. That's one reason why they can't produce a decent jet engine. Their flagship WS-10 series was copied from early 737 engines and modified for use in fighters. They tried to run them with Russian software, but they could never get it to work. It took the ChiComs about 20 years to write their own code. But the one consistent fault in the WS-10 and all variants is the shitty metallurgy, using alloys which don't even come close to Russian quality, not to mention Western metals.

Some dude on tv is pitching this product that you screw into the condensate drain of your A/C. Claims that it gets plugged up due to bacteria and this magic device prevents that. Don't know if it works or not, but I have heard that you need to check the drain often.

My central A/C went out a few years ago and i'm saving up to replace it. I've got the type where the condenser is in the attic due to my heat which is baseboard/hot water heat. The summers have not been fun I can tell you that.

Chop up the green apples (or quinces) and boil them until the chunks are beige and the liquid is syrupy. strain off the syrup and it in bottles and keep in the fridge, OR can it like juice. It is home made so you have to do the proportions by ear when you make jam, and you have to be picky about how long you boil it. It isn't the commercial "boil 2 minutes" sort of thing, you do need to get it to the soft ball stage.

When my grandmother died she had a basement full of home canned foods and nearly all of them had the bands rusted solid on them. Everything was in her basement in a root cellar so the humidity and temperature was pretty constant.

The guy thought they had used too small a coil. When they put in the furnace, they stretched the duct over and it separated. The house is poorly insulated. It will be harder to work on that. Back in the covid times, canning supplies were in short supply, so my buddy asked me to get lids and rings, especially lids as he could reuse rings. Well even though we live in different states, we had the same shortages. I found some of those plastic ones though, but he didn't want them. I don't know why, but probably because he didn't have experience with them. I don't can (jar!) so I don't have any preference. But I do recall them being more expensive than the metal ones.

SS agents may be allowed/ordered to shoot to kill to pre-emptively neutralize threats. Those state or local police may not have the same RoE. Even if SS offers to give them a letter stating cop will have SS/DoD legal cover for a pre-emptive shot, the local DA or state DA may say, nuh-uh.

No, not really. I got 3-4 quarts of cherries, 5 cups of sugar, a shot of lemon juice and a half a glug of vanilla essence. This is a typical recipe for jam. the hard part is getting it to jelly right, and that requires temperature reading or good eye for how it comes off the wooden spoon. You can also drizzle it on a cold plate, but that never seems to work for me for some reason in a hot kitchen.

I cooked the cherries until they foamed, dumped the sugar, pectin and lemon in, brought it back to a hard boil, and stirred it until it got to the right temperature on my candy thermometer, and added vanilla

Sure Jell pectin has a recipe booklet and that shows a good reliable recipe for a lot of fruits.

I went to the range for the first time last Saturday with RedMindBlueState. He let me shoot a .22, a .45 (which I am told I must call "God's own caliber") and an AR15.

I wish I had enjoyed it more, but it wasn't because of the guns or RMBS - who, by the way, is an excellent and patient teacher - it was because the weather was ridiculously hot and especially humid.

We're going to shoot again, and I hope the weather will be better this time.

If it's true the SS was understaffed trying to protect PDT then, the mistakes can be explained through exhaustion. The SS has to not only protect the day of, they also have to scout venues ahead of a rally. If they're not only scouting but also protecting it's a recipe for a disaster such as occurred yesterday. For me it's not so much understaffed as "these people have been coasting on their reputation and I wonder if they are capable any longer."

There was a sniper roost 200 yards away. They didn't have it secured. As was posted above, it could've been a couple of VFD 20 year olds with radios asked to climb up and help out. Sad to say but the easiest way to reinsulate exterior walls is the remove the interior drywall and if diy (use rockwool R15 or some such) and if no exterior vapor/wind barrier exists, use good ole tarpaper (30 lb preferable but 15lb is ok)next to the siding on the exterior. You can also seal gaps in the exterior siding that way.

Mineral wool insulation is impervious to water, cannot mold, critters including termites hate, hate, the stuff as it acts like diatomaceous earth on their shells, and it denser than fiberglass adding some sound as well as heat/cold insulation.

Easy to DIY.

The alternative is spray foam which is not really diy and creates some noxious odors for about the just slightly more R value.
