THE MORNING RANT: Federal Government to Slaughter 500,000 Barred Owls after Logging Bans Didn’t Save the “Northern” Spotted Owl

Barred owl in Flight.JPG

A famous lie promulgated by anti-logging activists to save a regional “subspecies” of spotted owls (the “northern spotted owl” ) has now evolved into a federally orchestrated slaughter of a different species of owls – barred owls. A compendium of falsehoods in service to the 20th Century environmental agenda has led us to this place in the 21 Century at which “greens” are now the ones fervently calling for the mass-sacrifice of raptors, whales, and other magnificent creatures in order to appease their angry climate God.

“To save spotted owls, US officials plan to kill hundreds of thousands of another owl species” [AP – 7/03/2024]

To save the imperiled [northern] spotted owl from potential extinction, U.S. wildlife officials are embracing a contentious plan to deploy trained shooters into dense West Coast forests to kill almost a half-million barred owls that are crowding out their cousins.

For decades, the operational excuse for the decline in spotted owls in the Pacific Northwest was that timber companies were felling “old growth” trees, which was the only habitat that spotted owls could live in.

The barred owl plan follows decades of conflict between conservationists and timber companies, which cut down vast areas of older forests where spotted owls reside. Early efforts to save the birds culminated in logging bans in the 1990s that roiled the timber industry and its political supporters in Congress.

The old growth forests were saved! So why did spotted owl populations continue to decline? It turns out the situation had nothing to do with spotted owls preferring “old growth” trees versus younger trees, it was due to barred owls extending their North American range into the Pacific Northwest, and somewhat displacing spotted owls.

The proliferation of barred owls in recent years is undermining that earlier work, officials said. The shootings would likely begin next spring, officials said. Barred owls would be lured using megaphones to broadcast recorded owl calls, then shot with shotguns. Carcasses would be buried on site.

Lovely. What about the possibility that spotted owls might be mistaken for barred owls and shot by mistake? These two owls pictured below are a barred owl (left) and a northern spotted owl (right). On a gray day from 40 yards away, I’m sure there is no risk of misidentification of one of these birds amidst the branches, leaves, and twigs.

Barred Owl and Spotted Owl.JPG

Yet spotted owl populations continued declining after barred owls started showing up on the West Coast several decades ago. Across the region at least half of spotted owls have been lost, with declines of 75% or more in some study areas, said Katherine Fitzgerald, who leads the wildlife service’s northern spotted owl recovery program.

Unsurprisingly, now that logging cannot be blamed for the spotted owl’s decline, global warming is being identified as a factor. These eco-communists are so predictable.

Researchers say barred owls moved westward by one of two routes: across the Great Plains, where trees planted by settlers gave them a foothold in new areas; or via Canada’s boreal forests, which have become more hospitable as temperatures rise because of climate change.

Climate change. Is there anything it can’t do? Related, those devastating western wildfires a few years back were blamed on climate change, of course, but forest mismanagement was the major contributor, driven in large part by the spotted owl vs logger battles.

“Wildfires and the spotted owl hoax” [Bonner Cohen – CFACT – 10/02/2020]

Rapidly spreading wildfires have laid waste to hundreds of thousands of acres of timberland and grassland, destroyed homes and businesses, and killed dozens of people in an area stretching from western Oregon south to Napa and Sonoma counties in California’s wine country. The fires took advantage of the region’s hopelessly overgrown forests, which provide combustible fuel for the destructive conflagrations. And that’s where the spotted owl comes in. As a result of the owl’s being placed on the federal Endangered Species List in 1990, severe restrictions were placed on the cutting of trees on millions of acres in the region’s national forests.

Mr. Cohen then debunks the notion that northern spotted owls could only exist in “old growth” forests, but also note again the use of the term “subspecies,” to which I am going to circle back again shortly.

The environmentalists’ claims rested on the argument that the northern spotted owl, strix caurina occidentalis, one of several subspecies of spotted owl, was in danger of going extinct because its primary habitat, old-growth forests, was threatened by commercial logging. As the drama unfolded, the term “old-growth forests” became a staple of the debate over the owl.

But owls also thrive in younger forests, where their favorite prey, the northern flying squirrel and other rodents, are abundant. That the owl’s survival depended on millions of acres of timberland made off-limits to logging was an unfounded notion spread by environmentalists.

The Fish and Wildlife Service declared the northern spotted owl endangered in 1990, and draconian anti-logging practices were implemented. But they had no impact, because logging was not the enemy of the spotted owl.

In truth, the spotted owl was coming under pressure, but it had nothing to do with old-growth forests and nothing to do with logging. Barred owls began moving west from forests in Canada and Minnesota in the early 1900s and had made their way into the Pacific Northwest by the 1970s. Larger and more aggressive than the spotted owl, the barred owl successfully invaded the smaller owl’s territory and began winning the competition for prey and thus survival. In fact, the barred owl was known to be causing problems for its smaller cousin at the time of the debate over what to do with the spotted owl, but this was swept under the rug in the rush to save “ancient forests.”

But there is more to this story than the “old growth” fabrication. Another misrepresentation is that the northern spotted owl is a unique species at all.

Endangered “northern spotted owls” are a “sub-species” of spotted owls, which means they are, in fact, the same species as California spotted owls and Mexican spotted owls, which also live on the west coast. Their difference is that geographic distance and separation have caused some differences in plumage and appearance. To call these spotted owls a different “sub-species” is like stating that Norwegians, Koreans, and Nigerians are different subspecies of homo sapiens. The notion of bird “sub-species” is actively rejected by many in the ornithology community.

This research piece from the Cooper Ornithological Society makes it rather clear that the spotted owl is all one species, noting that the northern spotted owl’s identifying features are based on a specimen from Puget Sound in Washington, while the California spotted owl is based on one from Southern California, but the identifying features of spotted owls gradually morph between the two locations.

The original descriptions of the Northern and California Spotted Owls were based on a small number of specimens, taken from Puget Sound and southern California, respectively (Merriam 1898 ); specimens from intervening localities were not available at the time of the original descriptions. A subsequent morphometric analysis of traits cited in the original description of the Northern Spotted Owl revealed only subtle clinal variation in size, plumage pattern, and color among population samples from throughout the range of the species (Barrowclough and Flesness 1996); thus the original recognition of the races was apparently due to sampling of individuals from distant ends of clines, which differed in color and spot size.

In summary, two great lies are at the root of the environmental damage that has been done in the name of the spotted owl: 1) That logging was responsible for their decreasing spotted owl population in the Pacific Northwest; and 2) That there is even such a species as the “northern spotted owl.”

But hundreds of thousands of barred owls are now going to be killed in perpetuation of these lies. Considering that the “green,” anti-carbon advocates of the wind industry defend the senseless killing of millions of eagles, raptors, and migratory birds as a necessary religious sacrament, this proposed owl slaughter is consistent with the 21st Century environmental movement.

22 From a friend who works at Dep of AG out in Northern CA:

Quick history

Historically, barred owls ranged from the east coast to the plains, where the lack of trees made it inhospitable. As more towns and cities were built and trees planted, they extended their range to the western forests, where the tree density made it inhospitable (their native habitat is open forested). As western forests were logged and fragmented, it allowed expansion to the coast. They hit Washington early 80's, Oregon in the early 90's, northern California late 90s. Being bigger and more aggressive than spotted owls, they will chase them out of territory and even kill them. They also cause genetic pollution, which is not a nazi reference but rather they will breed with spotted owls and produce functionally sterile young ("sparred owl") that further reduces spotted owl populations.

Now for the facepalm part.

When I was an owl biologist in the early 2000's, we argued in favor of killing barred owls which numbered a few dozen pairs in northern California. We were shot down (yes pun intended, need you ask?) over concerns not of necessity nor effectiveness, but public perception. A quarter century late

41 My older brother bought a house that borders right on a national forest more than thirty years ago. From the beginning, one could stand on his property and see that the density of trees in the forest was too high to be healthy. Of course, the feds couldn't thin it out - they tried numerous times but every time the environmentalists would tie the proposal up in courts and it wouldn't happen.

So, just last year, the state intervened and thinned out the trees to something much closer to a healthy density of trees. I don't fully understand all the legal wrangling that the state had to do with the feds and courts to get this done, but it happened.

Environmentalists disgust me to no end. Conservation is not a desired goal for far too many of them. It's simply a means for them to screw society over.

These networks of individuals migrate to newer and more stupid causes in order for funds, conferences, political power, and all the other trash that accumulate with senile organizations with no real reason for continued existence.

For this reason, 'non profits' should be taxed and regulated just as regular businesses are including universities, etc. We are approaching the same problems that led to the French Revolution in the government fisc---too much is not taxable (due to political power and wealth) and the burden can no longer be borne much by the middle class which is being impoverished in favor of the favored welfare classes from below and financially raped in the marketplace by those cloud people above that run society via market manipulation, oligopolies, cheap labor outsourcing and H1B replacements, etc.

interestingly there is enough genetic difference there that in any other animal population they would be classified as at least a different sub-species

101 Yes, and the dirty little secret is, when logging was an industry in this country they were generally very responsive to fires and maintained their own fire fighting capabilities.

Once all that went bye-bye, it devolved to the state. And the "state" is full of greenies and watermelons. The predictable result is forest mismanagement, and lots of really bad fires.

Which are blamed on Republicans, or "Global Warming". You have to admire in a grudging way, the whole mind fvck they have done on everybody.

169 CAPRADIO, To save spotted owls, US officials plan to kill hundreds of thousands of another owl species
Friday, July 5, 2024 | Sacramento, CA

In part, "Because barred owls are aggressive hunters, removing them also could help other West Coast species that they've been preying on such as salamanders and crayfish, said Tom Wheeler, director of the Environmental Protection Information Center, a California-based conservation group.

Public hunting of barred owls wouldn't be allowed. The wildlife service would designate government agencies, landowners, American Indian tribes or companies to carry out the killings. Shooters would have to provide documentation of training or experience in owl identification and firearm skills.

The publishing in the coming days of a final environmental study on the proposal will open a 30-day comment period before a final decision is made."
-----
Sounds a bit like DIE and nepotism, like most government programs. Anyway...

So get on the Federal Register within the 30 day comment period and register comments regarding this proposal by the The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

I have never been as enamoured of Ike as a person nor as a general as a lot of other people have. Fred Greenstein got it right with the "Hidden Hand" presidency.

Patton, however, saw right through Ike but was so desperate for combat that he accepted humiliation after humiliation from his 'best buddy' and Ike's entourage like Bedell Smith.

Patton noted Ike working a crowd of soldiers midwar and in an aside to an aide, told the aide Ike was going to run for the presidency.

— Biden stepping down as the Democrat nominee in mid-July, announcing the new system, with support from Vice President Kamala Harris;
— potential candidates having a “few days” to throw their hats in the ring;
— the Democrat Party beginning a primary “sprint” in which the six candidates with the most votes from delegates pledge to run “positive-only campaigns” in the month leading up to the convention;
— weekly forums with each candidate moderated by “cultural icons” such as Michelle Obama, Oprah, and Taylor Swift in order to engage voters;
— the nominee being chosen by delegates before the start of the Chicago convention on Aug. 19 and being announced “with plenty of fanfare on the third day of the gathering”;
— the nominee being unveiled on stage with Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton; and
— Biden being celebrated as a “modern-day George Washington.”

And Rs will NEVER bring the impeachment vote until they have every D signed off on voting for it b/c they won't bring more members than they have to do so. After the ugliness of the Biden Cabinet member votes and the Senate's refusal to do anything with them, Rs are correctly sitting back, for once in power, saying "not my problem"...we'll see how this summer continues to go.

I do expect a Constitutional amendment being passed in 10 years limiting a president (and VP) to no more than 80 years old...possibly even no more than 75. How come there's no requirement for a 6 month study on how many humans will be impacted, how many will have their careers ruined? Just a snide "Learn to Code" from our betters in the "news".

Did anybody get to vote on any of this? Fuck no. I always like it when my lefty friends say "You can't do that, they are public lands!", my reply is "What if the public wants to mine and log the shit out of it. What then?" They'll drop their martini.

Illustrating the point what they mean by "public" is all I'm trying to do there. They mean "under their control" when they say "public".

Good news? The antenna tower didn't suffer a single glitch or twitch.

244 230 I do expect a Constitutional amendment being passed in 10 years limiting a president (and VP) to no more than 80 years old...possibly even no more than 75. 246 Species develop and go extinct -- especially in certain specific locations -- all the time all over the globe. Why are we interfering with this?

I do believe certain animals should be protected from human poaching and hunting, as that is not a normal natural phenomena. The big African animals come to mind. If they weren't protected, hunters would hunt them all to actual extinction in a decade or less.

Same as in certain protected areas. In my recent trip to the Galapagos, it's teeming with wildlife not found anywhere else. And the wildlife is all dumb as shit. They have no fear of man. They walk (or fly or waddle or swim) right up to humans. Literally. If hunting or animal capture were allowed there, it would wipe out very rare populations that aren't prepared for contact with predatory humans.

State polling is much harder to do than national polling but generally follows national trends.

You basically need the same large sample sizes as for the nation but much harder to do at the state level to get a representative sample of that state's electorates. Refusals, partial interviews, area codes on cell phones not corresponding with state or district, not being the right demographic to fit into population models, and so on. So to get a good representative sample somewhere like New Hampshire, you would need probably to make at least 5000-10000 interview calls to get the needed 1200 or so sample size needed for good accuracy.

Very expensive and media is not going to pay for that sort of polling. Candidates, however, can and do.

297 One thing I haven't seen is how the CW in the Dem party will affect their willingness to release the Hur transcripts. To date, Merrick Garland has refused to do so, presumably because it would cement in people's minds that Biden truly is unfit. OTOH, there are factions who want Biden gone, and this would be one very large straw on the camel's back.

I'm anticipating leaks of the transcripts.

307 285 Is it common to publish political polls during election "season" in the rest of the world? No idea - but I'd hazard to say it's probably illegal.
Posted by: Common Tater

Polling is pretty much universal in the West. Much of the rest of the world, it reflects the party in power rather than preferences.

If you can find it, back in the 60's, probably funded by State and the CIA, a group of political scientists investigated how to apply polling to various third world nations. I think Seymour Lipset was one of the investigators among others and they produced probably one of the better artifacts of research indicating problems when polling across various countries that often have a very low level of trust in society.

When I was a kid I was walking along a forest road in Silver Gate, Montana, when I suddenly felt that something had flown overhead, Just a few feet over me. I looked up and saw the silhouette of a great horned owl against the stars. It made another pass. I could not hear its wings, but felt the wash. Completely silent. Scary as hell, but also really cool.

Most of the movies from that era are terrible. But they captured a fleeting moment where America was very curious about that very white, affluent demographic. And like today, they had the right "influencers" and corrupt critics to promote them with propaganda.

You want to watch a worldwide sensation of a movie that today is barely watchable? Saturday Night Fever. It was before my time, but it took the world by storm. Watching it now, it's so seedy and sleazy -- not to mention misogynistic and racist -- you need to take a shower after you watch it. I have no idea why it was so popular at the time.

366 Ike always hated 'politicians' (ironic, considering how good he was at power playing) and Nixon was considered to be one of the most emblematic of the breed. And, when Nixon went ahead with the Checkers speech rather than resigning like a good, whipped-puppy GOPer and basically forcing Ike into keeping him on the ticket, Ike never trusted him again.

Ike was passive aggressive in personality and he dealt with some of the biggest egotists in the political and military system. MacArthur, FDR, Churchill, 'Betty' Stark, Patton, and Montgomery, plus Alan Brooke, the Dulles brothers, etc.

He was the perfect example of a staff man made good by diligence and brownnosing when in an inferior position while probably bottling up massive anger and resentment over his past treatment.

372 "Crowd sourced" polling is useful - provided the people employing aren't up to unscrupulous purposes. Just like anything else.

I think it was popular in the Army, at least, at one time. When Sergeant Floyd died on the Lewis and Clark expedition, the men voted on who they wanted to replace him.

NASA did similar routines, where doctors would "rate" the candidates for selection without naming them. This is still unknown who they were talking abou, though there are some guesses. Just candidate "A" thru K" or whatever. They also asked the astronauts who were selected, who THEY would rate as number 1 and so on.

That's how they ended up with Shepard, Glenn, and Grissom. Not just test scores, but "polling" as it were. I think some of the snake eater service selection schools have a "rate your fellow soldiers" kind of thing going on as well.

377 Is retirement mandatory at age 70?
Age Discrimination Legislation in the US

The amendments that were signed into law 1978 expanded coverage under the Act to workers age 70, implicitly abolishing mandatory retirement at the most common age, 65. In 1986, the upper age limit was lifted altogether, outlawing any form of compulsory retirement.

378 The Memory Care Moron, J. Robinette Slidin' Biden, had his chief of staph Hunty dial up Joe and Mika for him, during their morning show today.

It went so sideways they had to send out the Coast Guard to retrieve it.

It's getting more grotesque each day. Before the "debate," it took pouncing by Trump, or team members, or conservative pundits, to highlight the lies and gaffes.

But it's gushing like knocked-over fire hydrants everywhere, soaking the low-info bystanders, impossible to ignore.

The huge fireworks display last night in this farflung Chicagoland suburb went like I think the dems' convention might go. Began 20 minutes early, not even full dark, and less than 5 minutes in, it looked like the whole huge raft of mortar bombs launched at once. Then silence. For a full fifteen minutes. Then it began again but it was apparent because of a lack of continuity, that the control of timing and sequence had been destroyed. Seemed like the fire chief was running around the barges randomly, a Zippo lighter in one hand. 40 boring minutes of big aerial bombs, time gaps, and an ending like what happens with microwave popcorn.

Like, is it all popped yet?

That'll be Chicago.

503 Aykroyd is an outright crazy person.

He needs someone else there to take his 400 page long scripts, find the good stuff, and cut out the rest.

It's what happened on both The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters.

Its pretty common for quality to suffer when the writers outgrow the editors and nothing can be cut. I read the first several Wheel of Time books which was a boilerplate LOTR but the books kept coming and getting longer in text but shorter in events. I called the last one I bought "Rand al Thor's Breakfast" because nothing happened in its 500 pages or so.

504 Where's the Audubon Society when the Owls need them? The Audubon Society was created to Protect and Save Birds. Have they replaced it with Politics and this Global Warming/Climate Change Scam?

505 So does this mean when a new group moves into another's territory and starts crowding out those who lived there already, it's government policy to shoot the newcomers? Someone tell the DHS, stat!

Funny how this concern over invasive species crowding out the natives only seems to apply to animals and plants, not to human cultures, at least not in our present time.

506 decades of conflict between conservationists and timber companies
