Gun Thread: Katana Komplete Edition!

070724 Samurai-and-katana scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

As I predicted last week, it's now July. Bet you didn't see that coming! With summer in full-swing, many of you may be taking a vacation. Is that you? Are you planning a vacation and are you vacationing from the comfort of home or are you going somewhere? How about a shooting themed vacation?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
So how are things going at the range? Do you feel like you are making measurable progress? Are you stuck in a rut? If so, how do you know? What system of measurement are you using to gauge progress?

You can focus on fundamentals and still have fun at the range. As a matter of fact I would argue that it's quite a bit more funner when you have a methodology in place to measure your progress over time. After all, you're paying for the range time and ammunition, why not realize a tangible benefit as a return on your investment? Why not enjoy seeing results of hard work?

070724 B-16 target scaled.jpg

OK, you can find a free printable bullseye target here which I found online with a quick search and avoiding the more goofy alien and zombie targets for simplicity. There are approximately a zillion free targets on the internet, and you can buy more 'official' targets printed on heavy paper such as the one pictured above . I encourage you to document your progress as you practice, by shooting for score on one of these targets at the conclusion of each range session. Date the target and use the margins or back for notes if you don't have a little notebook in your range bag. Take the targets home, and maybe even record the results in a spreadsheet. Notes should include what you focused on during that particular range session and what, if anything, kept you from achieving the desired results. Over time, you will have enough data to paint a fairly good picture of the areas requiring attention, and it's fun to see how far you have come.

One thing we haven't covered much in our fundamentals discussion is dealing with malfunctions. Notice the guy in the video is watch-less so it's no wonder he's having problems.

Katana Komplete!

WeaselKatana - Before

Welp, the WeaselKatana restoration polishing is finished! I received this email from our pal and togishi Dave this week. Again, if you're late to the show and missed the WeaselKatana backstory so far, click here to get with the program.

So, I finally have your wakizashi completed! In the final pictures, you can see the kissaki (point) and the burnishing have been finished. Sorry it's been a few days since the last photos, but the home stretch proved very difficult and took a few extra days to complete.

This blade is what is known as a bit "tired". That is a Japanese sword blade that has been polished down over the centuries to the point where some of the features have been worn away or some of the core steel or interior welds may be loose or showing. I guarantee that when you are 300-400 years old, you will probably be a bit worse for wear as well.

In the case of this blade, the biggest problem proved to be the kissaki (point). It had been ground down to the point where it was very thin and not particularly well shaped. Unfortunately the lack of metal meant that we pretty much had to go with what was there with only moderate room for improvement of the shape. Since the point had been ground down, the boshi (temper line around the point), had been completely ground off. This is actually very common in older blades. Most of the Kamakura era (1185-1333) tachi that you might see in the finest museums in Japan will have the temper line gone from around the point. With your blade, it literally faded right off the bottom edge of the point. Luckily, I happen to be exceptionally good at using some very fancy stone work to create a fake boshi, one that will fool most professional collectors. Finally, there was a karasuguchi. This is a crack right at the tip of the point. These are very tricky to work with because it makes the last millimeter of the point want to flake off with any type of mishandling. Given what I had to work with the final results are extremely good. This is important because the kissaki is considered "the face" of the sword.

The final step you will notice to have been completed in this last round of photos is the burnishing. The upper surfaces, shinogi-ji and mune, of a properly polished Japanese sword are burnished. This is where super hard steel burnishing blades and needles are used to compress the steel and close the pores in the surface. This is what gives the shinogi-ji and mune its distinctive mirror like surface and also imparts some degree of rust resistance. It is tricky trying to create a mirror surface my rubbing steel on steel. The burnishing tools used, migaki-bo, are generally hand forged and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. To facilitate the burnishing process, a very fine lubricating powder called ibota is used. It comes from the waxy excretion of a large cidada-like insect! Burnishing is one area where bad or amateur polishers can be easily identified, because they either have very bad and scratchy burnishing or they don't actually burnish at all.

First I want to share some photos of the blade showing the state of affairs before I sent it to Dave.

And now for the finished product!

<img alt=

<img alt=

<img alt=

<img alt=

<img alt=

Were you able to notice a difference between before and after photos? The change is quite subtle and nuanced, but if you study the photos closely even an untrained eye will begin to see the difference the restoration and polish made.

Kidding.

Sweet Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick and Holy F'ing Atomic Shitballs!
I should have the blade back from Dave in a week or so, but even the pictures of the finished product are stunning. Quite frankly I did not know what to expect, but this exceeds my wildest expectations whatever they were. Given it's original condition I think I was hoping to simply stop the rust and maybe make it a little shiny, but this thing belongs on the damn Art Thread. I can only imagine what it's going to look like in person.

My plans for the blade? I'm going to have a display case made and put it on the mantle to enjoy. I am not a sword collector, but I very much appreciate fine work and history. It would look cool on display if it had been made last week, but the age and history and connection to my dad make it absolutely priceless to me. Learning just a little bit, really only scratching the surface, about these blades has been tremendously interesting and something I plan to continue.

Finally, many thanks to my togishi and new pal Dave Hofhine. Honestly I had a lot of choices when deciding what to do with the blade, and it was Dave's philosophy on restoring these treasures that sealed the deal.

From Dave's website:

I always take a minimalist approach to foundation polishing, always considering the long term well being of the sword as primary. From the most humble and worn out blade to swords of significant historic and artistic merit, I always approach with the attitude of "wanting to do something great", the first question always being, what would I want done if it was mine.

I absolutely 1000% agree with this. Maybe even 1005% agree with this, and the results speak for themselves. I am so glad I waited the three years to percolate to the top of the wait list and have Dave do the work. I am often guilty of making profoundly moronic decisions, but in this case, I think I very definitely made the right call. Thank you, Dave.

Cigar of the Week

070724 rhomboid TX Lancero 2 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores yet again with this excellent review of the Alec Bradley Texas Lancero

A lancero is a classic cigar size, long and skinny, usually something like 6 X 43. It's a vitola that (in the normal form) emphasizes the wrapper leaf and its flavors (without violating an AOSHQ no-math rule, just consider the volume of filler vs. the amount of wrapper, as a cigar gets longer and skinnier). Well, Alec Bradley's sense of ironic humor served them well when they named the Texas Lancero - a 7 X 70 monster (insert saying about the size of things in Texas here).

A handsome medium brown Nicaraguan wrapper encases filler leaf from Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It's fairly dense (though not heavy in the hand), burns slowly and mostly with a good even burn line. It's got a very pleasant flavor profile - I get mostly just a very nice tobacco sweetness, though other reviewers (of course) get more, and the buddy who gifted them to me always talks about the citrus note. It's on the mild end of the mild-medium category, and just easy smokin'. Set aside a few hours when you light it up, as it will last hours - but it's perfect for when you're inspecting brass, resizing brass, polishing silverware, or just doing nothing and relaxing. I can see Weasel burning this stick down on the farm-o when he's engaged in 9mm forestry, or driving his tractor, or shooting. The Texas Lancero's available online for around $7-8.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

14 Wicked cool katana, Weasel. I'm uber jealous.

Congratulations, on a very nice museum piece. I love the idea of having it out where you can look at it and enjoy it too.

Met a decendant of G. Washington, yes that G. Washington, and got to hold his no shite real life m1835 saber carried by his ancestor in the war of Northern Aggression. Very cool weapon.

Weighed a ton too.

He used it to cut the Army birthday cake a few weeks ago here in North Alabama.

No range report. I did take a look at my rifle scope and managed to crank the elevation down much further.

Have you given any thought about what factors go into your choice of a carry gun and what your priorities among them are? Once you decide what things are important to you in making a decision, sorting through the bewildering array of choices out there should become significantly easier.

I can identify on lack of range time for the last two years. Parental units dying and going downhill along with my health problems plus retirement made it very difficult.

Figure out the location of where you want to holster it first, then select the firearm for the carry position. Nowadays, lots of good choices but pick a firearm that is essentially dehorned (no hard edges) for both easy holstering/presentation and concealable for yourself in your holster carry location.

For carry, simpler is better and a bit bigger is better than smaller as far as shootability.

Using a machete for brush cutting is tough work. Take a look at a Ditch Bank Blade (large hook billed 16 inch blade on a medium length handle. Easier on the back to use for brush cutting and pretty easy to resharpen as needed. Works great on snake beheadings at a safe distance as well.

Nowadays, power brush mowers were the tool for me until my arthritic joints got the best of me.

If you tried to use the Davy Crockett for the role it was intended for (stop the Russian armored hordes blowing through the Fulda and Hof Gaps), the maximum range given the terrain would often put the crew within the blast radius of the warhead. I understand that the when the Davy Crockett was decommissioned, the US Army recycled the warheads into the "backpack nukes" for the old 12E MOS (Atomic Demolitions Specialist).

Posted by: Ed L at July 07, 2024 07:25 PM (yRXSd)

55 The Davy Crockett did not actually have a blast radius more than its range. But it was very much intended to be last resort.

They decommed the launcher system which left them these small warheads. So they said, here's an idea, let's strap them onto parachutists.

No. Really.

Weasel, thanks for the gub thread and the Katana story, it is very cool. I will try to take it easy on the compliments, as I don't want to be called teacher's pet or have spitwads shot at me.

Early in the thread and already such cool info...Katana is complete, source of printable targets, cicada secretions, meeting a descendant of George Freaking Washington, vending machine ammo...oh man. Oh, and zoom meetings...arrggghhh

69 Dash My Lace Wigs, not to be an alarmist (well, maybe), but the time to do that is yesterday, if not today.
We are in uncharted waters now, and self defense should be moved way up the priority chart.
You definitely want/need time to get acquainted with concealed carry so that it is part of your everyday routine.
And then practice, practice, practice. Drawing from concealment, moving off the X, mag changes, etc.
As Zod would say, “Do it. Do it now.”

Appendix carry is a fast and increasingly popular choice for some. Just make sure that your choice has no sharp edges at the back of the firearm/grip area.
------
Some pretty good semi auto choices in single stack 9mm's that are out of vogue right now but a good single stack with 8-10 rounds plus an extra mag is still good medicine for most social situations. Then you get the more popular double stack that add a bit of thickness in return for more capacity.

Personally, I went to an XDS 9mm single stack because of the passive grip safety plus the trigger blocking one. Nicely dehorned and pretty inexpensive 8 and 9 round magazines plus the one in the chamber. The 9 round has a small grip extender that can make it more shootable but at the price of a little less concealment value.

79 I can be credibly accused of being a bit of a Sig fanboi - I own 6 - but for carry I don't think you can go wrong with a P365 (I own 2 - sra blaster's EDC and mine).

The original P365 has 12+1 9mm (well 10+1 with the flush fit mag) which is a lot of bullets for a little pistol.

Do try before you buy. You need to accept that in order to make gains in one area, you'll have to make sacrifices in others. As for getting both power and light weight in the same gun, I know personally that shooting .357 Magnum from a Colt Python snub nose (made of steel) is a very unpleasant experience that usually leads to solid misses and poor follow up shots. See my submission to the thread on a 3" barreled example from last year. For an extreme, S&W has a J-Frame that's not only chambered in .357, but is also made of titanium, so it's super light. I'm told that the recoil shooting that thing is extremely unpleasant and a painful experience because it really beats up your wrists.

81 So, range report: 1,000 yard and KYL contest.

First the 1,000 yard one point for every hit on a 10" steel disc. Massive failure on my part. Normally, I should put at least 1 round on 10" target. 0 for 10 proves me wrong. On the other hand, much more experienced shooters had just as much trouble as I did, though, we did have one guy pull 4 out of 10. But, this is also a guy who'll pull 5 in the X ring at 1,000 yards at our other match. Yeah, we've got two 1,000 yard ranges in our AO.

I did okay on the 500 yard KYL as the wind wasn't nearly as impossible to read as it was at 1,000 yards. Middle of the pack on that particular challenge. (KYL Know Your Limits. Steel, 5 targets, 12 shots, 2 Minutes, large to small and if you've still rounds keep shooting at the small target. 2" target. My last shot knocked if off the rack, which was amusing)

What fascinated me, though, was the guy shooting 300 PRC. Holy smokes is that a round. 215 grain bullet @ 2,900 fps. I didn't believe it until I looked up the specs. He got 1 on the 1,000 yard target, by the way. Shot lights out on the KYL, however.

Standard barrel length is 18.5 inches. There are short-barreled models (14 inches, I think) out there, but these require you to pay the NFA tax for a short barreled shotgun. These also give you only five rounds vs. the seven in the standard barrel length model I have.

I wouldn't pull the panic button. Go to the range. Try several pistols. Maybe even a revolver or two. Take notes. Go home.

Go to the range again. Try the top three you liked last time. Take more notes. Go home.

Go to the range again. This time bring your belly band or corset. Try your top two. Holster them (unloaded ). Walk around. See how they feel against your body. Take more notes. Go home.

Read all your notes. Make your decision. Then seriously consider your purchase.

It's an investment. Not an impulse.

95 I posted last time about my flight with firearms. Previously I found that flying with firearms was like having a special pass and you got better treatment. Not this time out of IAD to MCO on United. Had to wait in a long line to get the firearms checked in. Landing at MCO was trouble free - they called out my name to come pick up the case as soon as the luggage from the flight came out.

Flying from MCO to IAD, got to go in the "Additional services" line and bypass the long line, and then get escorted to the TSA scanner. Easy peasy. However, at baggage claim at IAD it took...a while...waiting for them to bring the case out.

If I were conspiracy-minded, I would say that United is trying to discourage travelling with firearms at IAD....

103 I got the chance to put a couple of cylinders through a Lipsey's Distributors exclusive S&W 432, a six-shot revolver in 32 H&R Mag. It has a number of nice upgrades, including nice sights (XS Front Night Sight with a U-Notch Rear), VZ Grips made of G-10, chamfered cylinder holes, and *no* Hillary! hole!

Aluminum frame, with a (guessed) weight of around a pound. Trigger felt ~9 to 10 lbs (it's DA only), and very smooth. I didn't fire for record, but keeping 6 shots on a 5" steel at 10 yards was a piece of cake. Recoil is very mild.

Looking at the ballistics, it's very comparable to the 642 in .38 Special, but the .32 Mag is more shootable.

I was impressed, and am thinking of getting one.

111 Speaking of fundamentals, I am now officially paranoid about double checking my zero before a match. I headed out to practice a bit and I could not tag the 500 yard target. I headed over to the 100 yard range, hung a target and I'll be darned if my zero wasn't 1/2 MOA off. Fixed that, but, from here on out, if at all possible, zero will be checked before a match.

I also noticed this last match I need to do a better job of getting behind the rifle. I've got everything set up so if I'm sitting where I should, the cheek weld and eye relief hit naturally with no effort on my part.

I might also add, the 1,000 yard target, the wind was variable and there really wasn't a good way to read it. I tried mirage, nothing. And, the wind changed direction enough the round was moving right or left, depending on the wind. Guy shooting the 300 PRC had the same problem and he was shooting a much heavier and faster bullet than I was.

115 32 H&R Magnum is a Rodney Dangerfield cartridge--don't get no respect. That being said, AH Lloyd likes them a lot and I have the older 32-20 in one revolver that is about equivalent. They are definitely a step above the old 32 S&W Longs.

Just one thing about them though--if empty brass and ammo is available--grab it right now as it is a niche cartridge prone to long droughts in appearance.

The part I found interesting was the "AI" facial recognition part of the machine. You put your ID in and it matches you to the ID so you can buy the ammo. (It's an age verification bit.) If we coulf bring back some sanity to who can buy ammo, and get rid of that part, vending machine ammo is really cool.

I've clean up brush with a variety of handtools over the years and the ditch blade is a peach. You can basically use a baseball slugger approach at the bigger brush and it is easier on the arms and back than using a machete for a long period. Plus, as I said, good snake killer.

40 volt or higher battery hedge trimmers are also the bomb and you can even get them with extensible reach poles. Acts like a handheld scythe mower against brush up to 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter. Again putting you at a safe distance from nasty snakes.

130 Hi All. It's been awhile since I posted around here. Anyway, to answer Weasel's questions, yes I'm taking a vacation, and yes it will involve some shooting. I'm going on a hog hunt with a very good friend of mine and will likely shoot a few rounds of trap with my brother-in-law. I'm taking an AyA SXS 20 gauge for trap shooting and an AR-10 "pistol" chambered in 375 Raptor (.308 necked up to .375) for the pigs. The Raptor will be suppressed and loaded with subsonic hand loads. Fingers crossed.

I've quit worrying about the listicles simply because of teh duncepack effect. The more data they collect, the less usable and less actionable any of it becomes. Note that decades of CCTV footage in the UK haven't made one dent stopping the increase of crime countrywide. Just means more bureaucrats watching CCTV for a job. Just one thing about them though--if empty brass and ammo is available--grab it right now as it is a niche cartridge prone to long droughts in appearance.

I have 32 S&W Longs and a 32-20 so prepped to add a 32 H&R Magnum. But, when the ammo was around, the guns weren't. When the guns were available no ammo.

Charter also makes a 32 H&R in their Professional Line that appears pretty nice and of course 32 Long is available right now.

32 Long is a fun low recoil and blast round that is actually better than 22 LR for teaching someone to fire a revolver. Less stiff trigger pull due to not having to dent a rim to ignite. I bought a 1906 Police Positive model with a bulge in the barrel but actually found a 6 inch replacement barrel of that exact same transition year that was unbulged to fix the revolver. Fun little revolver now to shoot and probably what I will take on the next range trip in the near future to reacquaint myself at the range.

I don't think it would necessarily be lethal to the crew that fired it. They know what's going downrange, and have a couple of seconds to take cover behind a berm, or a massive vehicle, or in a trench. Enough cover will shelter them from the blast and the prompt radiation. Whatever fallout occurs may ultimately get them, or not, depending on the wind.

I'm there!
Those preferences are what you will be figuring out by following all the "try it out" advice whig and others are dishing out. Some people like a hammer locked back, some prefer striker fired. Some just like a revolver better (they have pros and cons as carry tools). With a revolver, some want hammerless, some like a hammer.

Don't let people tell you as an absolute "You need a big gun" or "You need a small gun" or "You need to shoot this caliber" or "Never carry that kind of gun." Make them explain to you the why of what they're claiming, and to make it applicable to YOU. Make them explain why that gun would be a problem to conceal or to shoot for you.

And, mostly, try them out and you might find one that you end up saying, "Oh yeah, that's the gun for me."

218 Don't know if anyone else will care but I just learned that Thompson/Center is being brought back from the dead. They made the single shot Contender pistols and had a similar rifle in addition to some excellent muzzleloaders. S and W bought them out some years ago but didn't maintain the quality and customer support which had always been a big deal for the brand. Then S and W closed it down.

I read that the newer version of the Contender and rifle would likely be the first offerings sometime next year. I assume they won't go back to the muzzleloaders which is too bad since they were tack drivers and well built.

Contenders are versatile because once you have the frame it can accommodate any of their barrels to change calibers. Want to go from 22lr to 44 magnum, just swap out the barrels which is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a whole new gun. Contenders are a reloader's dream. And being single shot they are economical since you don't burn through ammo so fast. I like single shot firearms, in case that wasn't obvious.

If you don't know about them there are $50-$100 or so handheld stick scanners that write straight to an SD card. Yes, but be aware that "cheaper" is not necessarily the same thing as "cheap." Most Contender and Encore barrels run in the $300+ range even on the secondary market.

225 whig the range bans steel core ammo on the main range, but fortunately I still have Yugo lead-core surplus for that portion. 227 Dash my Lace Wig

Both GWB and Nurse have some good advice up there. Fortunately, firearms right now are pretty fair priced and ammo is available so no need to panic buy right now.

For a carry firearm (versus one left in the house for bumps in the night), it needs to be a combination of factors personal to you for it to be the right one. Also if it turns out to be a frog instead of Prince Charming, there are a lot of other frogs in the pound likely to be your prince of protection.

I would, however, consider something like a 380 ACP as the bottom floor for a carry gun due to ammo availability and modern design. You have a lot more choices in 9mm nowadays and it is a more potent cartridge for self defense.

In revolvers, hard to beat a plain 38 Special capable of shooting +p ammo and I would recommend at least a 3 inch barrel on it.

And, mostly, try them out and you might find one that you end up saying, "Oh yeah, that's the gun for me."

I'll add one thing to this from my personal experience: I have a couple of .38s and really like them, and the titanium one is my boat / snake gun that goes out with me anytime I'm fishing or on the water. Absolutely one of my favorite pistols.

That said, I'd advise against a titanium short barreled .38 as your first "real" carry gun. I've posted some of the really old ones to ancestry so that at least some people have an idea what their ancestors looked like. But now I have the remaining 15 or so photo albums plus a whole box of loose memorabilia of family trips, etc. gone by.

Most of the photo albums that I have to scan now involve my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. from family get togethers and trips gone by. I only have about two albums of really old 1870's to 1930's photos to scan. Have to dig through tax files though as my mother is in memory care and fading to perhaps skilled nursing care so I have to evaluate whether or not to sell commercial property for her to sustain her care. Gets complicated when selling a depreciated asset as far as cap gains taxes expected.

Agree w/ getting a 3" barrel for shooting .38 Special +P ammo. The extra barrel length, smaller muzzle flash and blast are worth the tradeoff in concealability. 3" would a minimum for .357, but I wouldn't recommend .357 ammo for a novice shooter using a snubbie.

Agreed. No idea what the new frames and barrels will cost when they appear. Since I get sticker shock every time I see the cost of new guns these days, 300 bucks or so seems reasonable for a new caliber. (As you can guess, I rarely buy new guns.)

It seemed to loosen up a bit by the end. It's a very different gun than I'm used to - heavier than a son of a gun. It also crushed my right thumb, the way it would recoil. I ended up shooting left-handed for a bit because it hurt.

I understand Hi-Point fits a certain market, and I think that's great. If I was hard up for cash and wanted protection I'd be all over this gun. But my old arthritic hands really took a beating and I was yearning for my 1911 by the end.

True, in most states, try to avoid probate period if possible by liquidating real property. Easier to handle a cd with beneficiaries than a 1957 Chevy in probate or grannies house.

Some states have an expedited small estate process that can help resolve issues.

Re gun trusts, two types but you will be named and fingerprinted now if you are on one. One is the share ownership of single item something like a NFA item like a suppressor.

The second is a slightly more complicated venture but allows more freedom in sharing firearms among its trustees and it is the titular owner of the firearms.

Get good legal advice if you plan to set up either one. But, it can avoid a lot of hassles in transferring firearms to loved ones.

Clips are... out of stock everywhere, but I will order as soon as possible.

So, a trip to NC is in order. Going to try and take my son and introduce him to the beauty that is the M-1 Garand.

CMP never did send me an email or anything, telling me it was on its way. But on the 3rd the money magically disappeared from my account, and I got a text from FedEx saying a signature would be required. I mailed my forms on 1 May, so just over 2 months.

If you want one and don't have one (or more) you'd best order soon.

Well, given the near-unity probability of Ace not being at his emotional best at 0700 hrs EDT on a Monday morning, since he had to roll out no later than 0657 hours to groom his pelt before the Zoom call, blaming Ace *to* Ace would be certainly be a bold strategy.

313 267 I only knew about the trusts for suppressors. That's a good idea about helping with probate. Any recommendations on what to look for?
Posted by: Moron Robbie

Basically a gun trust can be set up for a whole family to allow joint access to the firearms in the trust. To do that, each 'trustee' that handles the trust's firearms must pass the std. NIC background check and probably separate state checks in unfree states. For the most part, ordinary firearm purchases can be added to the trust once it exists pretty easily. NFA items though it is best for the trust itself to acquire and hold title. People don't realize it but an deceased individual with an NFA item has something that most individuals themselves cannot even touch legally once they are deceased. You often have to either have the police confiscated it for who knows what or somehow get it to a licensed FFL dealer that can handle NFA items and/or destroy it.

For something like a .22 LR suppressor, the problem can be greater in expense than the suppressor itself is worth.

Probate law itself is difficult enough and varies widely among the states. Gun trusts allow you to bypass that nasty process.

Not an expert on accurizing Garands but loose trigger guards are believed to affect accuracy negatively and unpredictably if you are shooting at the top of your game.

I've thought of having them -- because there's no one else I would trust -- restore my granddad's Colt Bisley that was shown on the gun thread a few years ago. But I'd have to wait for everyone in the family of my father's generation to pass before I did because they would hate me for touching it.

Posted by: Schnorflepuppy

Rust and fire bluing can be done at home fairly cheaply as far as resources---it does require time and practice to make it good though. Rust is better for whole guns, fire bluing is done on individual pieces like straw bluing a trigger or hammer.

A lot of the secret is in the prep work including polishing, etc. before you get to the bluing. Caustic bluing is a pain in the ass and deals with hazardous chemicals. Parkerizing is easy enough and tough finish when combined with paint for firearms or even automotive engine paints.

Brownells is a good source for all things bluing, painting, and finishing firearms.

You made a good choice (but you know that).

353 342 Thinking about a Steyr AUG. They're much less expensive than they used to be, Steyr is making a big push into the US civvie market, they have a production facility in Alabama now...and they're selling .300 Blackout barrels for them as well...it's super quick to change a barrel on one. Any morons have experience with them, good or bad?

Kind of a boutique weapon which I have fired once via a guy at the range. Disliked the trigger pull but it is designed specifically for Close Quarter Battle not hunting, etc. purposes. By all accounts, good enough for social work if you need one.

Expect high prices on mags, parts, etc. which might or might not bother you.

You are smart. If you really need a .460 handgun, I am glad people can buy one. With the possible exception of grizzly territory or bringing down a moose, fairly useless for even most handgun hunting in the lower 48.

A guy on Ammoland has a running tally of handguns versus bears and for the most part, it is the same as conflicts with criminal humans--the first rule is to have a gun (his investigation discounts bear spray as being as effective btw).

His findings indicate if you get up to a 40 S&W, a 357 Magnum, or a good ole 45 ACP, it will turn the tide against most bear attacks in the more civilized areas of the US and is probably overkill for panthers/cougars, etc.

Not surprisingly, most of those rounds are pretty decent human critter repellants as well.

362 Nukes have 3 ways of causing destruction: 1. Blast. 2. Thermal (burn from flash) 3. Nuclear Radiation. The World War 2 size Bombs had a balanced destructive radius of about 1 mile for all 3 destructive mechanism. A multi megaton H-bomb is primarily a thermal weapon; it can cause burn effects far beyond its blast and prompt radiation effects.

A nuke the size of the Davy Crockett is primarily a radiation weapon; its fatal radiation radius far exceeds the thermal and blast radius. It was designed to kill enemy infantry and tank crews within about 1/4 mile.

370 A caution to the unwary about .300 Blackout and 5.56. A Blackout cartridge, under the right conditions can chamber into a 5.56 so if you have both, I recommend having distinctive separately marked magazines for each cartridge and only bring one of those cartridges to the range at a time.

Putting a .308 bullet and sticking it into the throat of a 5.56 causes rifle rapid disassembly sequence aka kablooey.

You can have the same problems with other ammo if not careful. For example, shotguns--standard colors for shotgun cartridges are done in part to keep from firing the wrong gauge ammo in them.

Be careful out there folks.

IF you have a home defense issue, you use the handgun to get to the shotgun. I would personally start at a 40 or 45 in her case. Shotguns are the best medicine for an angry bear and if deployed properly with slugs, even a 20 gauge is pretty stout medicine for a grizzly. A 20 gauge firing slugs is equivalent in firepower to two 44 magnum shells fired in a handgun simultaneously.

Thanks whig. Heard the triggers are stiff but that is normal for bullpups although there are apparently kits out there from a number of mfr's that will improve it. They make it with two different stock packages, one that takes the original Austrian "waffle" mags or one that will take STANAG/AR mags. Downside to the AR mag version is you can't do the conversion for lefthanders. I've never had a chance to fire one...need to see if there is a local range that has one as a rental.

A simple firearm trust works for avoiding probate on common firearms. For any NFA item, it is more a mandatory thing to avoid legal issues involving transfers among people in the trust and avoiding probate headaches along with the ATF.

As Ed L said, they are collectible but there are several other bullpups out there that are more modern and cheaper to play with. KelTec has one in .308 I think and then the Israeli design is also being sold here now in semi auto.

If length bothers you and you like to hunt, 300 Blackout in an AR pistol set up for suppressed shooting is a honey. Parts, barrels, and magazines are dirt cheap due to all the legal folderol involving the illegal ATF pistol brace regs that are now defunct.
