Top Story

  • OpenAI got hacked, but definitely not by Chinese spies. (New York Times) (archive site)

    In April. 2023.

And they didn't report it until now. In fact, they didn't report it at all. One of their employees alluded to the event on a podcast, and was fired for his trouble.
Mr. Aschenbrenner said OpenAI had fired him this spring for leaking other information outside the company and argued that his dismissal had been politically motivated. He alluded to the breach on a recent podcast, but details of the incident have not been previously reported. He said OpenAI's security wasn't strong enough to protect against the theft of key secrets if foreign actors were to infiltrate the company.
OpenAI denies this - well, not the hack, nor the firing, nor the fact that Aschenbrenner leaked the information, but the causal connection, in an announcement apparently written by a special release of ChatGPT trained exclusively on modified limited hangouts:
"We appreciate the concerns Leopold raised while at OpenAI, and this did not lead to his separation," an OpenAI spokeswoman, Liz Bourgeois, said.
Liz Bourgeois? Obviously a made up name.
Referring to the company's efforts to build artificial general intelligence, a machine that can do anything the human brain can do, she added, "While we share his commitment to building safe A.G.I., we disagree with many of the claims he has since made about our work. This includes his characterizations of our security, notably this incident, which we addressed and shared with our board before he joined the company."
OpenAI is making no efforts to build AGI, safe or otherwise. OpenAI's focus is building something and then redefining the term AGI to claim they have achieved it.

Ouch.

We have been hitting within one or two degrees of record temps for several days now.

75.9 degrees outside right now with a 75.6 degree dew point.

One of the benefits of a relatively newer home is the insulation and vapor barrier requirements that have been implemented in recent years.

Even though it runs a lot during the hottest part of the day, the house holds at 75 degrees, and about 44 percent R.H.

Looking forward to mid-September when the heat and the tourists both begin to abate.

I always 'joke' about retiring 3 years after I'm dead. Considering the recent generations work ethic, that may come true.

Posted by: Puddleglum at work at July 06, 2024 05:34 AM (wh7vU)

56 What I witnessed, of the 'new generation' of employees:

Mostly, they were not educated well enough to succeed on their own merits.

And so, they relied upon victim status --whining to HR about perceived sleights-- to simply remove higher-ups, to clear the way for their own advancement.

Pathetic.

Fortunately my first (and second) mortgage days are over. If I get a plumbing leak that messes us a wall and insulation I tear out the drywall and insulation, fix the leak, then patch everything up myself. Good as new. Why pay so much every year when I'll probably never file a claim?

113 Evening and morning to all the Saturday morning and nighttime folken! I'm up after a decent night's sleep. The window A/C is wokring well. Last night I tried putting it in "sleep" mode, and found when I got up that it saves power, all right. It shifts the temp up to 76 and goes to "auto." That's okay, I guess, since the air is dry, and the fan I bought kept the cooler dry air moving across me all night. To use the "timer" function, I think I have to use the remote that came with it. We'll see.

Anyway! Has F. Joke abdicated in favor of Kamalala yet?

Looks like kennel cleaning is on the agenda for today. I've managed to talk Her Majesty out of a complete power washing on the grounds that that's a fall/winter job and can't be done in the summer.

Doing the numerous floor mats in the pens and the work area will be difficult with the wet weather forecast, as the usual method is to take them all outside for washing and letting them air dry.

WM in some locations here has dispensed with the in-your-face cameras too. I mentioned that to one of the staffers standing around while no doubt dreaming of her break. She shrugged and grunted. I wanted to say, "Just how closely related were your parents, anyway?" but didn't.

221 It's still Independence Day in this far NW Chicagoland suburb, which will still not put on its fireworks show.

The show is scheduled for tomorrow night, the 7th, three full days after.

Independence Day is one of the few fed holidays that's not been turned into a Monday one. Fireworks shows typically begin well after sunset, certainly after anyone's work day, unless they are a shift worker. Employers giving paid holidays almost all give shift workers the time off.

Having the 4th fall on Tue, Wed, or Thu doesn't mean anyone will not be able to see the boomboom show if the fireworks are blown up on the 4th.

But here, it's all about revenue for the town guv. They throw a festival into it, and the festival must begin on a Saturday FOLLOWING the 4th, and the boomboom show must then be Sunday night. Ten bucks a head to get into the festival, which includes third rate live music, and shitty food stands.

252 So AI is what we call every cockamamie chunk of code that these fucking nerds put out there to basically mine data and steal personal information.

As a "fucking nerd", these decisions to apply "AI" are almost always made at the organizational level that has nothing to do with actually making things.

Due to the high cost of everything, "AI" is a luxury idea that marketing is now wresting to attract investors and customers (mostly investors since the customer is tapped out).

LLMs have their place. The consensus of those who work with the technology daily is that AI is a very eager intern that lies a lot. I think most of the public sees AI generating heavily previous-art influenced music, text and art. It plagiarizes with amazing speed rendering its output as near worthless since it doesn't have the human aesthetic, creativity or ability to self-correct and properly adapt to its intended use.

This is why the output in legal, systems code and finance is close but error filled and can't be used directly but must be heavily edited by someone skilled in the area being addressed by the Augmented Intelligence.

275 AI will be less aggressive and malicious if we scale it up two orders of magnitude above teraflops and turn it loose in social media.

Currently its on the path to self-destruct.

For example, the music industry, in their usual greed and litigiousness as gone after EVERYONE who provides an AI service to generate new music so any retard with an iPhone and a data plan can fantasize about being the next Taylor Swift because the AI made the music. The music industry is dashing those plans - and will generate their own AI from their own signed artists and make endless music for $10/mo subscription.

Problem is, why generate new training data? So AI will be using dead data, yesterday's trends, and less than reliable sources. Then subsequent AI will train on the previous garbage accelerating even more the GIGO process.

I'm starting to see some of it now in the dropped quality of new code that AI engines "suggest". Also dead-linked citations, and refactorings that are amplified versions of previous reductions.

Its spinning apart, and will continue to spin apart as more people want to influence its already alien processes and as AI borrows more from previous AI hallucination

291 F. Joke would have been, what, ten when Ike was first elected president? He, Joke I mean, would have heard it a lot during his formative years as a little frog-killing bastard. (I presume, based on his character as an adult)

Odd words and sounds work like that.

I remember so many people were saying "Aaaaaaay" sometime into the first season of the sitcom "Happy Days". Dittos with the "Whazaaaaaaaaa-p" after popularized with the Budweiser adverts.

292 Certainly we should place AI in a position where it coordinates and controls all of our first strike and nuclear defense capabilities to gain those milliseconds above our adversaries.

293 One of the issues with the American Thinker article is the statement that the spud hasn't been diagnosed. Balderdash, everyone in his inner circle knows what the problem is and are covering it up. All those weekends in DE at the beach and no records of who visited, many doctors have seen him. The diagnosis has been in for a long time.

299 I think that, until an accredited physician examines the Old Man in person, runs a battery of tests, etc, and then makes an official diagnosis on the record, Joe's inner circle can contiunue to maintain that everything's fine.

IMO YMMV

303 Certainly we should place AI in a position where it coordinates and controls all of our first strike and nuclear defense capabilities to gain those milliseconds above our adversaries.

In all seriousness, that ain't gonna happen. Far too many people want to strut around claiming their role in the decision chain.

Furthermore, from a security standpoint, I'm not sure how it could be air-gapped, because if it isn't, in order to receive the myriad of real-time streaming inputs that need to be scored, sorted and ingested in the decision matrix, it would be vulnerable to all kinds of malevolent manipulation events.

Sort of like how Joe is air-gapped and how Trump likely was so that any world altering decision would be managed by the power-mad sociopaths who don't trust anybody except their own vain imaginations.

305 This is weirder than it looks, and that's saying something.

"We" knew Joe was a vegetable a long, long time ago. But we incorporated that into our worldview, and eventually ignored it, because "they" were ignoring it. It was part of the furniture to our political view.

It was like the hypnotist snapped his fingers on debate night. The spell has been broken! This is devastating to the media, or ought to be. The most amazing 180 turn we've witnessed in the "news" certainly.
