I had the pleasure of spending it with @RexValachorum and his family. If you don't know Rex, he's a Romanian who immigrated after the end of the cold war. It's not every year that you get to hang out on Independence Day with a guy who actually helped shoot a Communist dictator. Pretty inspirational.

I tend to regard the Constitution as a bit more important, in that it set out exactly what kind of country America would be. But it's impossible to imagine our history without either one.

Yes, but.... The whole amazing part is that they took the principles from the Declaration of Independence and then built the Constitution to make a country out of it. It wasn't perfect and they knew it. But it was the only place that had ever been founded on those principles. And that's pretty dang cool.

There's some great footage on YouTube of Nicolae Ceaușescu's final speech on December 21, 1989. He thought he would cow the gathered crowd and demonstrate he was in control. And it did not work. The crowd got louder and louder, jeering and booing the dictator, and you can see the confusion and fear on Ceaușescu's face as the preference cascade comes into effect.
The next day, Ceausescu and wife fled the Romanian capitol in an abortive escape attempt. And of course, they were executed almost casually on Christmas day. A few years back two Romanians were arrested for driving a steel rod into the dictator's grave to make sure the old fiend was well and truly laid to rest.

1) The US Flag should not be worn as clothing (which includes capes).
2) Stars are always on the flag's right side facing frontwards when the stripes are oriented vertically, so I would assume the flag would be facing off her back, and as she is standing, the stripes would be vertical, so the stars over her LEFT shoulder, the flag's right side.

Every year on Independence Day there's an impromptu fireworks display that is a joy to behold. People show up from all over.
There's probably a hundred people. Folding chairs, coolers, hooch, food, dogs, kids, the whole bit.
And the fireworks. Ohmigosh what a conflagration.
The best part: my driveway is aligned with the center of the action so I cranked up music from a playlist I created just for fireworks. So cool to see people laughing, dancing and having a good time.
The bestest part: the music was playing from my almost new SUV I bought ONE WEEK AGO today!
Kids, amateurs, gunpowder and alcohol.
What could go wrong?

Could make a welder with it. I think it only puts out about 30 amps, though. This thing is 1930's tech. Even the fan shroud on the Briggs and Stratton engine is cast iron.

Administrative law is that quasi-judicial manner that agencies use to enforce their rules. In Oregon all the agencies have tame ALJs that are used supposedly to "speed up the process" instead of sending it to the courts.
It really is the way that the agencies get to be judge, jury and executive. which is the goal there, of specialists administering the law that they make up and enforce, for efficiency.

Hoover and Congress rejected free trade in favor of protectionism. This turned what would have been a very deep recession into the Great Depression. Coolidge wanted as little government interference in the economy as possible.

Coolidge had a very sharp recession in 20-22 that followed the money expansion and war spending for WWI. He did very little, the Federal reserve got caught out and couldn't figure out how to react, so all the malinvestments washed out of the economy and it immediately recovered.

Hoover and Congress rejected free trade in favor of protectionism. This turned what would have been a very deep recession into the Great Depression. Coolidge wanted as little government interference in the economy as possible.

The worst part was the lack of human contact. My understanding is they would let the children scream and cry all day and night. My friends told me how heart wrenching it was. Hundreds of children basically warehoused. Even now you have to be careful about touching her. She loves hugs but I always ask first.

Occam's razor. The leaked internals give plenty of explanation. They were behind in the polls, after blowing $300 million trying to drive Trump's numbers down with the "convicted felon" and failing.
They needed to shake things up, and hoped they could put out Scranton Joe, recreate the first debate from 2020, and claw back into contention.
It backfired spectacularly, and they have lost more ground. Hard to think of what they can do to change the trajectory of the race now.

Great prank, is to take someone who's expecting the Texas City Buc-ee's (52,000 sq. ft. store, 254 pumps out front, etc.)... to one of the Small Buc-ee's, and watch their underwhelmed reaction.

Not to run down Braun, or the VfR, but the Mars orbit and the Mars conveyor concept were developed by Hermann Oberth who was also the technical advisor on The Woman on the Moon by Fritz Lang, and had the initial concept of the Ion drive. He also proposed running rockets on methane and Oxygen.
His book Rocket into Planetary Space was the first serious book on space travel and came out in the early 20's. Willy Ley thought it was a wonderful book.

It was even worse than that - the Agricultural Adjustment Administration had the idea that cutting production would increase prices for farm goods, so they set out to purchase livestock and to pay farmers subsidies to leave part of their land uncultivated.
That alone one could disagree with, but in practice, their efforts served only to enrich even further a few mega farms, mostly in the Mississippi Delta. Few ranchers or farmers saw any benefit, while the old "Planters" siphoned off the funds and the effort. Also, the subsidies actually continued into the 1970s.

Just reading a quick history of how we "acquired" Von Braun. He was at the top of the list of people we wanted. Also at the top of the Russian's list.
The Russians actually tried to kidnap him away from us. The plot failed. The Brits also interrogated him, trying to get info they knew we wouldn't give them.

I’m in agreement, the Federal Reserve ain’t all that great but I’m not smart enough to figure out what to replace it with. I got ideas on how to change it, like ditching the full employment requirement. Restricting its responsibilities to one thing: stability of the currency with strong Congressional oversight (and no, an audit will do not one damn thing. That’s all bullshit.). They can have fewer people as fewer out of state checks are written these days. Fewer checks period for that matter. But anyways, not to the point where I am some person who just hates central banks to hate central banks, and not to the point of being an absolute total crank.

Re methane as rocket fuel. That's what Starship's Raptor engines use. That Raptor is one impressive engine.
It's the first sucessful "gas-gas" full flow staged combustion engine to fly.
Also, the methane and LOX are sub-cooled. Normally, you keep you cyro propellants right at the boiling point. With sub-cooling you chill the liquids even further down close to the freezing point. That increases density and you get more mass of propellant.

Another time I want to ask you - I notice that since June 21 or so - sunrise has moved later by a few minutes but sunset remains stuck at 8:06 PM now for almost two weeks. I think I know why but would like to hear from an expert. I wrote 'another time' because it's late and the beers are kicking in so maybe we can discuss on another ONT.

Look up the "Equation of Time". Right now, the day length, time between sunrise and sunset is getting shorter, but the middle of that window is shifting later relative to mean time.
Here, and 34.7N latitude latest sunrise was the 28th of June. Sunset is getting earlier now, but only slightly,and most of the reduction in day length is on the sunrise side.
The Equation of time is what governs this.

The Germans don’t scare me they bore me, but they don’t scare me. You look at all that is going on in European politics over the last 20 years or so and Germany has done nothing new. There are really interesting conservatives in Spain, Italy, and the UK and some other countries, Not sure what Germany is doing. The military is probably fourth or fifth best in western Europe. They do make some really good knives and other small appliances though.

Germany's military strength was built upon the foundation of it's economy and manufacturing capabilities. It has been cutting its own throat in that aspect. Its Achilles heel was and still is petroleum. It's a different world stage now and it's doubtful they could ever rise to the level of their past. Re the Equation of Time. "Equation" there is an older sense of the word meaning "reconciling a difference", sort of the sense of balancing a checkbook, not a formula/mathematical equation.
It is the difference between Apparent (or True) solar time, and mean solar time. Mean solar time averages out the variations in the sun's apparent proper motion, and uses an average, or mean sun that moves at constant longitudinal speed over the earth's equatorial plane.

I just walked across the street to check it out. It's INSANE how many big fireworks are going off! I could see the huge professional show in downtown and across the bay there were tons and tons. Plus my beach is all lit up.
Interestingly enough, it all seemed quite civilized.
I'm home now. The hot rods are starting their show.

The Raptors use Kerosene, though the Mars project is supposed to use Methane since it is easier to generate on Mars. If they can generate it on Mars they can carry more onboard on the way out instead of return fuel.

Look up the advantages and disadvantages of all the rocket fuels. It's complex, and the tradeoffs and all that are not simple.
Elon wants to go to Mars, and generating methan "in situ" on Mars is possible. That may be his main reason, but liquid methane has many other advantages.
Liquid hydrogen has a much higher specific energy (energy per mass) and resulting specific impluse , but a much lower energy density, requiring huge tanks.

The most efficient rocket would be the hypothetical "photon engine". You convert all your propellant mass to "pure energy" as Mr. Spock would say. You're not throwing off any rest mass. Your exhaust is "pure energy", exhaust velocity is c, the speed of light.
A flashlight in space is a photon engine. But a very, very, very, very low thrust one that doesn't convert shit to energy.
A real photon rocket would have an exhaust of some god-awful flux of gamma rays that would fry anything looking at the wake. But that could get you to relativistic speeds.
The technology to do this is very, very far away.

Imagine you have a perfect photon rocket. The trajectories you follow would be very much "non-ballistic", you could easily do powered, accelerated all the way.
Now, if you limit acceleration to what humans can stand, 1g, you could make a trip to Mars in about 3 days. Accelerate toward Mars at 1g, sustained, then about halfway, turn around and decelerate at 1g and get into Mars orbit.
Now, if you don't worry about g forces, you could make the trip in a few minutes, the limit of the relativistic speeds and and all that. The accelerations would be ungodly, though.

I personally don’t think of the flag as something you use for dissent , but I have seen more than once or twice upside down flags on car decals, etc.
To me in the end, the American flag means something and when you fly it, you are saying something to the people that see it. It could be aspirational or historical, but in the end, we all know what it means.
Personally, I wouldn’t read too much into it. To me, it is about those who came before us. And what we believe. I’ve heard people on both sides saying you should respect the flag because of veterans. I personally think that is a very narrow way of viewing patriotism, Patriotism is not just about veterans it is about Americans.
I will continue to fly the flag even when hard-core left is still in charge. They hate to fly anyway.
