You should be out celebrating with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other. I had the pleasure of spending it with @RexValachorum and his family. If you don't know Rex, he's a Romanian who immigrated after the end of the cold war. He's an absolute beast on Twitter, gutting weak-ass commie simps like so many fish. It's not every year that you get to hang out on Independence Day with a guy who actually helped shoot a Communist dictator. Pretty inspirational.

If course, my Nazi township prohibits fireworks, except for the 24h before and after the ten desi acted holidays. So, 30 days per year, but not between 1a to 8a. Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at July 04, 2024 10:19 PM (ufFY8) 57

THAT NEEDS TO BE A T-SHIRT!!! One of my favorite memories of Christmas 1989. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 There's some great footage on YouTube of Nicolae Ceaușescu's final speech on December 21, 1989. He thought he would cow the gathered crowd and demonstrate he was in control. And it did not work. The crowd got louder and louder, jeering and booing the dictator, and you can see the confusion and fear on Ceaușescu's face as the preference cascade comes into effect. The next day, Ceausescu and wife fled the Romanian capitol in an abortive escape attempt. And of course, they were executed almost casually on Christmas day. A few years back two Romanians were arrested for driving a steel rod into the dictator's grave to make sure the old fiend was well and truly laid to rest. Well, you win some, and you lose some. In the "win" column today, I was able to start and run an old, old 110 volt DC light plant (possibly the backup to a farm wind generator; 110 Dc, was what the deluxe ones put out). Filed and gapped its ignition points, tried to service the carb, and couldn't get the main jet out, and swapped in a carb from a 30 years newer Briggs and Stratton. Wrapped the starting rope around the pulley (no recoil back then), and gave a tug: "bang, bang, pop, stop". Carb was flooded. Turned off the fuel petcock. Gave another tug on the rope: "bang, bang, bangity, bangity, zoom!" It ran for a minute or so until the fuel in the carb was exhausted, and got up to normal running speed, too. The voltmeter even indicated a little output. I will put a sediment bowl on the fuel tank, and try to fix the float in the carb, but it is nearly a runner, now. I promised to donate this old thing to the Dwarf Car Museum in Maricopa. The owner there, Ernie, is a cool dude, and big Trump fan. He will likely never run it, but it made me happy to hear it go bang! and make smoke.

I live on a cul de sac with great neighbors.
Every year on Independence Day there's an impromptu fireworks display that is a joy to behold. People show up from all over. There's probably a hundred people. Folding chairs, coolers, hooch, food, dogs, kids, the whole bit. And the fireworks. Ohmigosh what a conflagration. The best part: my driveway is aligned with the center of the action so I cranked up music from a playlist I created just for fireworks. So cool to see people laughing, dancing and having a good time. The bestest part: the music was playing from my almost new SUV I bought ONE WEEK AGO today! Kids, amateurs, gunpowder and alcohol. What could go wrong? I mentioned earlier, you win some, you lose some. In the "L" column for me today: my trusty Dixon mower shit the bed. I was mowing away this evening, and the engine sort a just up and died. Slowed right down, was going "pop, pop, pop" and just quit, after I had thrown the blade clutch out of gear. Cranking it, it pops back strongly through the carburetor. I think the intake valve has burned, or broken.
Good news is, a friend has offered me another Dixon mower for parts, on that has a good engine on it. This engine was getting real tired, and down on compression, so its demise was not entirely unexpected. New rings and valves would probably bring it back. 323 The Federal Reserve was created in 1913. Like most of the rest of the shit created between 1900 and 1920 ... it was a bad idea by the worst trend in American Politics I can see.
No one died before December 1913. Until the Federal Reserve came into being, words like “death” and “dying” did not exist because those concepts didn’t exist. Nor did economics. We didn’t need to study economics. Things like “inflation” did not exist before then either. If we get rid of the Fed, people will stop dying. And all economic problems will cease. We will enter into Eden forever when that happens. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at July 04, 2024 11:59 PM (8sMut) 345

I would laugh at my fellow Canadians who would scream how "undemocratic" it was that Trump became President with less than 50% of the popular vote, and point out that shitstain Trudeau had unassailable complete control over the legislature, with nothing like a House or Senate to oppose him, with something around 40% of the vote.

The Founders didn't trust it. Two Wolves and Sheep. I wouldn't, if a do-over was on the table, support Democracy as done here. Universal Suffrage is the problem. During the Depression - you had Feds burning crops and butchering livestock...
Posted by: Its Always Been This Way It was even worse than that - the Agricultural Adjustment Administration had the idea that cutting production would increase prices for farm goods, so they set out to purchase livestock and to pay farmers subsidies to leave part of their land uncultivated. That alone one could disagree with, but in practice, their efforts served only to enrich even further a few mega farms, mostly in the Mississippi Delta. Few ranchers or farmers saw any benefit, while the old "Planters" siphoned off the funds and the effort. Also, the subsidies actually continued into the 1970s. "We knew that we had created a new means of warfare, and the question as to what nation, to what victorious nation we were willing to entrust this brainchild of ours was a moral decision more than anything else. We wanted to see the world spared another conflict such as Germany had just been through, and we felt that only by surrendering such a weapon to people who are guided not by the laws of materialism but by Christianity and humanity could such an assurance to the world be best secured." For a significant period of time, militarism was key to the German character, an outgrowth of Prussian doctrines going back to Frederick the Great. Who won WWII in Europe? Did the 8th AF have any part in that, preparing the ground for the Soviet invasion?
Since you asked ... Eight didn't really get going until they sacked the first two commanders ... and that's really the story of America in WW II in all the forces. Spaatz and Kneper replacing Hunter and Eaker. Hunter had a great mustache - but no idea how to use modern fighters. He was playing WW I in WW II. Eaker was a pro officer - a middle manager. Re methane as rocket fuel. That's what Starship's Raptor engines use. That Raptor is one impressive engine. It's the first sucessful "gas-gas" full flow staged combustion engine to fly. Also, the methane and LOX are sub-cooled. Normally, you keep you cyro propellants right at the boiling point. With sub-cooling you chill the liquids even further down close to the freezing point. That increases density and you get more mass of propellant. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 05, 2024 12:52 AM (w6EFb) 480

I am reminded of an allegedly wise Latina during her confirmation hearing in the Senate, and the sole occasion that Al Franken said something that was honest and brilliant:
Sotomayor said that she watched Perry Mason as a young child, and the Hamilton Burger character inspired her to enter the legal profession and to become a District Attorney. While the rest of the committee is nodding their heads in approval, Franken pipes up and asks, "You do know that he lost to Perry Mason in every episode, right?" All of us 29 year olds watching thought the same thing, and he actually said it. Posted by: John Drake Is Somewhat Impressed By The Astrakhan Kremlin at July 05, 2024 12:59 AM (tmPIh) 487

I suspect the '92 election is the key moment in this. The American people elected a scumbag interested in enriching himself and assaulting as many women as he could. Bush 41 would have only been somewhat better - but the NatSec state would have just looked for something new to go after and I doubt it would have been the emerging jihadis. Buchanan though? Now that would have been interesting. He was a proto-Steve Bannon with a hate on for Israel. He might have actually roled the NatSec state back and I could see him giving the speech ending American involvement in NATO. Yes he would have likely done poorly in the Middle East but so did Clinton and on everything else he would have been better. Posted by: 18-1 at July 05, 2024 01:07 AM (oZhjI) 500

Not so sure about that. During the late cold war period American weapons easily defeated Soviet weapons pretty much every where they were deployed. The Iran-Iraq war is especially interesting where even without much support from the US the American equipment they could keep running kept annihilating the Iraqis... Look up the "Equation of Time". Right now, the day length, time between sunrise and sunset is getting shorter, but the middle of that window is shifting later relative to mean time. Here, and 34.7N latitude latest sunrise was the 28th of June. Sunset is getting earlier now, but only slightly, and most of the reduction in day length is on the sunrise side. Posted by: IRONGRAMPA Me too - it's too risky. Ian Fleming, in his capacity as a journalist, fluent in German and having spent time there as a young man before his service in WWII, wrote a lengthy article about the state of post-war Germany in the late Fifties. He was favorably surprised at the contrition he encountered among average German people. but he said that he still had a recurring nightmare where a camouflaged missile suddenly arises in the Schwarzwald and a voice begins counting down to launch time: fünf. vier, drei, zwei, eins. Re the Equation of Time. "Equation" there is an older sense of the word meaning "reconciling a difference", sort of the sense of balancing a checkbook, not a formula/mathematical equation. It is the difference between Apparent (or True) solar time, and mean solar time. Mean solar time averages out the variations in the sun's apparent proper motion, and uses an average, or mean sun that moves at constant longitudinal speed over the earth's equatorial plane. Plus my beach is all lit up. Interestingly enough, it all seemed quite civilized. I'm home now. The hot rods are starting their show. Posted by: nurse ratched at July 05, 2024 01:55 AM (agvh/) 552

After midnight here in central Mississippi and still no fireworks. This is not the norm here. I'm beginning to think that Rod Serling may show up, cigarette at the ready, and sum things up:
"Consider if you will, a small city on the brink of the Delta in the Deep South. A city where the Fourth of July is met, not by pryotechnics, but by silence. Many will wonder why, but the answer lies in the Twilight Zone." (Twilight Zone outro theme) (Just before fade to black, Serling is heard talking with one of the show's writers) "That was a pretty weak episode, Richard Matheson. Why didn't they have fireworks? You don't know?!? You wrote the script. Who green-lit this thing? You are making a maniac out of me, Matheson!" Look up the advantages and disadvantages of all the rocket fuels. It's complex, and the tradeoffs and all that are not simple. Elon wants to go to Mars, and generating methan "in situ" on Mars is possible. That may be his main reason, but liquid methane has many other advantages. Liquid hydrogen has a much higher specific energy (energy per mass) and resulting specific impluse , but a much lower energy density, requiring huge tanks. I heard only a few fireworks tonight in my area of southwest Kentucky.

The Outer Limits follows an uneven Twilight Zone. The opening narration begins:
"We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits." "Actually, we don't know why John Drake's hometown didn't have any fireworks either. It's odd. Yeah, we don't know where to go with this ...look, we'll cue up a little something where David McCallum gets dosed with cosmic rays and becomes a ruthless, sinister, alien genius. That's more our thing." "Yeah, that's coming right up - you would think that Richard Matheson, the guy that wrote the film 'Duel' and was the top talent on the TZ would have included a reason why there weren't fireworks. Yeah, we don't get it either. Sorry about that. We'll go to commercial now." Posted by: John Drake Is Somewhat Impressed By The Astrakhan Kremlin at July 05, 2024 02:22 AM (tmPIh) 567

The most efficient rocket would be the hypothetical "photon engine". You convert all your propellant mass to "pure energy" as Mr. Spock would say. You're not throwing off any rest mass. Your exhaust is "pure energy", exhaust velocity is c, the speed of light. A flashlight in space is a photon engine. But a very, very, very, very low thrust one that doesn't convert shit to energy. A real photon rocket would have an exhaust of some god-awful flux of gamma rays that would fry anything looking at the wake. But that could get you to relativistic speeds. The technology to do this is very, very far away. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 05, 2024 02:31 AM (w6EFb) 573

Imagine you have a perfect photon rocket. The trajectories you follow would be very much "non-ballistic", you could easily do powered, accelerated all the way. Now, if you limit acceleration to what humans can stand, 1g, you could make a trip to Mars in about 3 days. Accelerate toward Mars at 1g, sustained, then about halfway, turn around and decelerate at 1g and get into Mars orbit. Now, if you don't worry about g forces, you could make the trip in a few minutes, the limit of the relativistic speeds and and all that. The accelerations would be ungodly, though. 580, there was one of those recent mainstream media posts. I don’t recall which outlet did it, but they ranked Virginia as the most patriotic state. I don’t put much weight into those listings and that had nothing to do with my commentary here, I know where I live in Virginia American flags fly all over.
I personally don’t think of the flag as something you use for dissent , but I have seen more than once or twice upside down flags on car decals, etc. To me in the end, the American flag means something and when you fly it, you are saying something to the people that see it. It could be aspirational or historical, but in the end, we all know what it means. Personally, I wouldn’t read too much into it. To me, it is about those who came before us. And what we believe. I’ve heard people on both sides saying you should respect the flag because of veterans. I personally think that is a very narrow way of viewing patriotism, Patriotism is not just about veterans it is about Americans. I will continue to fly the flag even when hard-core left is still in charge. They hate to fly anyway. Posted by: Quint at July 05, 2024 03:44 AM (oQ8mt) 585

I served, but I still don’t think patriotism and honoring the flag is about veterans. It’s about America.
If America is so bad in the world, why does half the world want to move here? As far as I can tell, the only people that don’t want to move here are the French. Lots of old grudges there as the two nations that truly believe they have all the answers for everyone else. Sure, we have problems. The hard left is trying to warp us. But no way America is a harm to the world, Almost every leader of every country if you really made him, just tell you the truth would say they’re glad America is the one superpower.
