Gun Thread: Pre-July Edition!

063024 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the end-o of June-o? July is only a day away!

Q: Weasel, we realize you were screwing around yesterday and not writing the Gun Thread, so may we pleeeeze have lite content tonight?
A: Why yes, if you insist.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Progress continues! Let's check in with our pal and togishi Dave Hofhine and see what's up with the restoration!

063024 koma-nugura scaled.jpg
koma-nugura stone - click to make more bigly

Here you can see the koma-nugura. This is the last of the "middle" grade stones. Following the komo-nagura I use a special nugui to remove any remaining super fine scratches and give a very uniform and smooth surface, something of a blank slate, to begin the finishing steps. Nugui is a hand ground polishing compound with various minerals and stone dust mixed with oils to achieve different effects. The next steps will bring up the hamon (temper line), hada (grain pattern), and other forging features.

For those wondering why I chose Dave to perform the work on my blade, the following fairly sums it up.

063024 hadori scaled.jpg
hadori stone - click to make more bigly

This picture shows the blade after kanahada nugui which brings out the hada (grain) pattern in the ji (body) and hadori stone work which whitens and shows the crystalline details of the hamon (temper line). Sorry this is taking so long to complete. I have to take a lot more breaks than when I was younger to prevent tendonitis and joint issues. In Japan, most polishers my age have long since stopped doing full time polishing. Once they get their official license to polish swords, they will bring on several apprentices and the apprentices will actually do most of the grunt work with the polisher acting more as a supervisor. The fact that I've been doing this full time by myself for 32 years straight, and part time for 5 years before that, means that I probably have more actual sword on stone time than just about anybody else on earth at this point.

Still not convinced?

Here is a page from Dave's website documenting a fun world record set by a blade he sharpened and polished.

Really? still not convinced?

This page has details of the Wake Island surrender sword he polished for the National Museum of the United States Navy in Washington D.C.

I am confident I found the right guy to do the work and I am sure you will agree. I'm looking forward to sharing more updates as the blade nears completion!

12 Went to the range to get some shots in for two new Colt Pythons I've picked up: a 6 inch barreled blued version and a 2.5 inch snubby in stainless steel. Writeups on both are forthcoming to the gun thread in the (hopefully) near future.

13 Hello Weasel and hello horde...the range schedule has resumed now that the family visitors have returned to the west coast....But I'm still struggling with consistency. Starting to be able to diagnose my problem issues (stance and trigger finger), but again, results not demonstrating the consistency I seek. And advice re stance? I've tried a number of them, but I still find myself tending to wobble at times.

No range report. Have done nothing firearm related.
Will have a few days off in mid July. Plan is to hit the range (outdoor or indoor is up in the air.

Will take a look at my scope Thursday as I do have the day off to celebrate the founding of this great country. Hopefully it is something I might be able to fix. If not will contact Vortex to see if they can do anything.
I only paid about $380 back in 2020. Do not want to spend to much more.

I hiked down a portion of the Caprock Canyon Trailway today. Finished right at 11 before things got insanely hot outside.

LOVED seeing “No firearms” on the info board for the beginning of it. Last I checked firearms are in fact permitted in TX state parks. I hope that’s just an old, out of date thing.

29 Evening, folken! I don't often get the chance to hit the Gun (and tobacco!) Thread. I've got several ranges in my area, and I'm off on the 3rd and 5th as well as the 4th, so I may go check them out. Plus there is a gun show on 7/20 and 7/21 about twelve miles from me.

It's been a long time since I fired a gun -- probably not since 2005, when I visited a friend in TX and we fired his handguns off on his property. Years ago I had a Ruger Single-Six and a Remington Nylon 66 rifle, both for casual plinking. But I sold 'em in '86 and haven't owned one since. It'll be neat to get reacquainted with 'em and find the right firearm for me.

You may be over thinking it. Make sure are engaging your core and leaning into the direction you're shooting. Last time I shot with weasel, he caught me on my back foot. Drop your shoulders. Have a firm grip, but not a death grip.

Relax a little. You'll improve steadily with practice and attention. Maybe write down how you felt and what you were concentrating on and where your shots were on the target.

45 Posted by: Grateful at June 30, 2024 07:08 PM (IQ6Gq)

Grateful, to see if your stance is a problem, try this. Take up your shooting stance (sans firearm, of course) and get as comfortable as you can. Have TRex get in front of you and with one arm, have him push against you at about shoulder level with slow, steady (but not too much) pressure. If you either 1) have to take a step back or 2) lose your balance, your stance needs work.

For your trigger finger, try loading your pistol w/ snap caps and concentrate on your front sight as you squeeze the trigger. Watch what happens when the trigger breaks and you hear the "click" of the hammer or striker dropping. If your front sights visibly move or wobble, that's an indicator your trigger squeeze needs work. I recommend doing this at home and not at the range. The muzzle blast and recoil make it difficult for you to diagnose this problem when using live ammo.

Looking at a Tikka T3 TACT A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor. And as much as I would love to get a Night Force scope I am looking at another Vortex. Maybe a Razor HD LHT with a FFP.

But I will not be buying anything until next year (unless Biden wins again) ;-)

66 Yay, Gun Thread!

Continued with the weekly range trips, with one miss for flu.

I try to have one or two things that are at the forefront of my mind to work on that week. This time one was predictive shooting, trying to get the second shot off at the right moment, while the pistol is still returning to zero, instead of waiting for it to get there, pausing to stabilize and firing. About the third range trip I've been playing with this, and I'm getting better, but still not as good as the old, slower way. There's a lot of gradual progress in these things, I guess.

The second one was simple and I feel stupid for not doing it before: when shooting with a red dot sight, look at where you want to shoot, not at the meandering dot. Forget gradual progress, that one tightened up my groups from the very first time I tried it. To my surprise, it also helped me do another thing I was trying to get better at, observing where the dot goes on the recoil, so I can work to make it straight up and down. Very unexpected. I should have known to do this all along, because I used to ride a motorcycle, and the rule is to always look where you want to go, never at the obstacle you're trying to avoid.

69 Something gunny for this week: traveled to Florida on United Airlines. Traveled with firearms. This has usually resulted in speacial treatment - getting directed out of line straight to the "Additional services" counter.

Not this time. Get in line with the rest of the third world.

Up until this trip travelling with firearms made the experience better. Perhaps just circumstances, they seemed a bit overwhelmed. Last time I flew on United with firearms out of Dulles they had a supervisor come over and do a checklist and a third person countersigned and it was a whole thing. This time the supervisor came over and I was opening the case to show him the contents and he said "I don't need to look in there."

Interesting.

76 You read my mind.
I was going to suggest buying a different blade if you were.
Paul Chen makes some very nice ones. At least he was 20 years ago.
Was also going to suggest starting with a bokken. The wooden ones Tom Cruise got beat up with in Last Samurai.
No edge to shoot your eye out with, you see.

If I had that blade of yours I wouldn't be able to resist pulling it out for some Iaido kata once in a while. Sure wouldn't do any cutting with it though.

The Benelli M4 in its law enforcement/military configuration. Collapsing three position stock, seven shot tube magazine, equipped with an Aimpoint Comp M5 red dot sight. I saw one at the last gun show in Chantilly a couple of weeks ago for $2,899. First time I've seen one on a table for sale in over four years. If you can afford it, pick one up if you see one. You will not be disappointed.

When I flew to Dallas from Newark last year I did not have to open up the case at the counter like I did the first time I flew with firearms back in 2020.
They just checked the rest of my luggage, had someone escort me over to the TSA where I opened the case, they inspected, closed the case and took it from there.

Maybe they do not want to freak out the people in line.

82 That Katana is coming along nicely, just gorgeous. I've dabbled in polishing, but it turns out I don't have the patience to get decent results. You need tons.

84 I did not come to Florida to shoot, though. I came to organic tree farm. Seriously. I planted some trees and I cut some down. It was hot and sweaty and sandy and tiring and I really enjoyed it.

Rethinking my tractor situation. Used a quad for getting about on the property it was quite useful. We aren't going to be planting any row crops any time soon so maybe the tractor is not what I need - I might just need a skid steer with loader.

And I surveyed (not officially with a transit and theodolite and whatnot) the area for the range. I think I am just going to hire a forestry mulcher and have him knock down the area. A skid steer would be useful for stacking railroad ties and dumping sand.

Posted by: blaster at June 30, 2024 07:42 PM (cvZX6)

85 Much as I'd love to handle a Katana, I'm not sure I'm smart enough to resist swinging it around and suddenly finding I've removed an appendage, whether one of my own or someone who had the misfortune to be in the area while I was doing my best Kill Bill.

Lin-duh, I recommend that you save your pennies and buy the real deal law enforcement/military model rather than try to convert a neutered five shot civilian mode with a fixed stock to the seven shot military model with the collapsing stock. First, you'll spend a lot more $$ trying to source the parts than you would just buying the thing. Second, the parts you'll really need (the seven shot tube, magazine spring, collapsible stock) are notoriously difficult to obtain. In particular, the collapsible stock and the rod it's mounted on have become unobtainium in recent years. Prices on the stock alone have increased to over $1,000. Such is the allure of a Benelli M4 in its USMC configuration.

Yeah, I've gotten to the point I put some rounds downrange and shoot just over a 1 MOA group, I think "buckshot."

I know I can push the 178 grain bullet to 2,800 fps and shoot around 1/2 MOA. Whereas I think max load for the 208 grain bullet is about 2,650. but, I don't know if I can match the groups I get with the 178.

We shall see. All in the interests of science, of course.

144 "In Japan, most polishers my age have long since stopped doing full time polishing. Once they get their official license to polish swords, they will bring on several apprentices and the apprentices will actually do most of the grunt work with the polisher acting more as a supervisor."

Atelier systems are still very much a thing in quite a few Japanese industries. Up until the last 5-10 years, manga was generally published this way; when you read a manga by a particular artist, (e.g. Yuu Watase) the named artist was generally only responsible for the storyboarding, pencil work and writing (unless there was a.separately named author). The rest of the work (inking, pencilwork erasure, cleanup, screentone application, etc) was done by unnamed assistants/intern mangaka hopefuls.

I'm using the past tense because most manga isn't made this way any more, thanks to Clip Studio Paint. The big publishers seemed to come to the conclusion that even though they wouldn't be able to churn out massive tankobans with 18-page chapters each week with only a single artist digitally doing the work of 10 people, they would save much more money all around.

My session was a bit frustrating as I was center left about a third of the time. Not low. MAE and LazyMessenger suggested I had too much of my trigger finger on the trigger and was gently pushing left.

I will have to work on it.

157 My father had a ceremonial sword from when he was in the Navy, so I guess it dates from the 1940s. I reckon it is a cutlass. There is a rectangular shaped location for a name but was never engraved. There is a scabbard, a cloth bag, and a leather case.

I had it on display for about ten years, but recently passed it to a nephew who I knew is interested in that sort of thing as I am in the midst of radical downsizing.

If your handgun has the real estate on top of the slide to do this, try the dime drill at home. Take up a good shooting stance after chambering a snap cap. Have TRex place a quarter on top of the slide. Try to squeeze the trigger without knocking the quarter off with your finger movements. If you're successful, substitute a nickel for the quarter and repeat. Try to progress from the nickel to the penny and finally, the dime.

Currently only Rock Island Armory catalogs firearms chambered in 22TCM: a 1911 style semi-auto pistol (also available with optional additional 9mm barrel and recoil spring), and a bolt-action rifle (which reportedly can use the same magazines as the pistols)

Well I am in Texas so that wouldn't be a problem. The issue with Civil War and American Revolution reenacting is most of us have aged out of the hobby and there is not enough new blood to take over.

Any period of military reenacting is expensive and most people either don't have the extra money or the inclination to give up a significant portion of their free time for the hobby.

Add a double stack mag well with 17-round capacity and the TCM MS Rock Standard earns respect for delivering a constant high velocity payload. [/i\

167 Just in from a long car trip and recovering so few comments from me tonight.

However, generally speaking guns that have experienced high temperatures are not something you would want to shoot in the future.

If you have firearms in a firesafe and there is a fire, remove them from the safe asap when safe. The drywall components release hot steam when heated which accelerates rust along with the water they spray to put out the fire.

Intense dark bluish finish on a firearm recovered from a fire is no longer safe to shoot. Basically heat enough to char wood or melt plastic will affect the firearm adversely even in a safe.

175 Hullo morons, don't mind the barking. The dogs are in their kennels for once during the gun thread.

I have been doing my range trips, mostly testing 147 gr JHP from Magtech (all good so far) and 230 grn JHP from S&B (very unreliable out of anything but a Glock).

I had a breakage last week. My PSA Dagger which has a little over 35k rounds through had a part of the frame break when I was swapping PSA slides. Now, this is a gun that cost me under $300 and it's a gun I've carried, shot IDPA with and put a lot of rounds through. And I've had more expensive guns break as well (Looking at you CZ 97. Again.) but it is disappointing.

It's worth the thinking: for $600 I can get TWO full PSA Daggers or one Glock 19 (sales and etc effecting final price). Is it worth the extra money to have a gun that isn't likely to break? I'd say yes, but I have to admit, I have several Daggers because they are so cheap (and because they work. Mostly). So while I'm waiting for warranty support to fix the issue, I have another gun assembled and ready.

So how is everyone doing?

I'm OK w/ going the PSA route vice Glock if that's what you want to do. One question, though: do you intend to repair the frame of your broken PSA (assuming it's repairable) to make it functional again? If not, you might want to take it to an FFL and figure out how to do the paperwork to permanently destroy it as a functional firearm. This would allow you to 1) get rid of deadweight that serves no useful purpose, 2) cover yourself legally on getting rid of a firearm that's damaged beyond repair, and 3) clear out room in your safe for something that's useful.

The 6,000 round endurance test for the acceptance trials for the M1911 was set because that's how long the steels of that era were expected to last. Technology has improved in 100+ years, but 35,000 rounds is pretty impressive for a polymer frame that costs a fraction of the original Colt M1911 when inflation gets factored in.

I own one of the surplus test model M17s and a recently produced commercial M17. I don't think there's a deadly sin associated with blowing stuff up, is there? Maybe we just let July be a venal sin month.

212 Current gun project: Savage 99. Manufactured 1926, per ser number. Birthday present from Son last fall. Presented as receiver, barrel, and ziplocks of parts. Needs new furniture. No, he did not remember how to reassemble. "You know guns, Dad."

Originally, 303 Savage. Rebarreled to 375 Win. Action is cleaned and properly reassembled. Bought some nicely figured walnut. Now am carefully sanding....

213 Good evening all and a big thank you to Weasel as always.
No range time. Just thinning out the things playing predator in my vegetable garden. Gamo whisper with the right pellets is good for 30-50 yards

215 The military contract P320s all have manual safeties.

Looking it up it is not the military contract pistols that were the subject of the lawsuit.

There were some reported instances of P320s firing when trigger not pulled. Some drop instances, some holstering/unholstering. The lawsuit involved an unholstering.

When I say "some" its very few considering how many P320s are sold. But there are a lot of people spooked by it.

We have a couple of them and they have not shot us yet.

216 I still have not been to the range. Over six months now without firing a shot. I need to remedy that.

217 Currently only Rock Island Armory catalogs firearms chambered in 22TCM: a 1911 style semi-auto pistol (also available with optional additional 9mm barrel and recoil spring), and a bolt-action rifle (which reportedly can use the same magazines as the pistols)
Posted by: blaster at June 30, 2024 08:21 PM (cvZX6)

Thanks, blaster. So, since no one is saying "Oh, hey, I could use that" it looks like the only option is to buy a new gun....

Do you mean you bought an inletted replacement stock or you bought a slab of raw walnut and made a stock from scratch? Because I'm not sure I even have the patience for the former but the latter would be damned impressive!

Or am I out of luck because they're cold-blooded amphibians?
Posted by: GWB at June 30, 2024 08:43 PM (AWrpC)

They will likely be colder than ambient. If your sight's sensor is sensitive enough, you should see them. They will be warmer than background sky. Recommend alternating between white hot and black hot as you search for targets. (Advice from a former Turret Tosd)

249 What I want to know is which GunTuber is going to assume the role of Paul Harrell? Paul is actually making a few appearances in recent videos but Roy is the main character and so far he doesn't seem to carry the same gravitas as Paul. I am praying for a full recovery for Paul but Ppncreatic cancer is a bitch so we need a miracle for him here. In the meantime, there is no one who can fill his shoes.

The former. About 3/16" oversize. The harder part is the forend. It's inletted for 303 Sav and the 375 Win has more meat around the chamber. And I need to drill that for the anchor screw. The forend is truly "workmanship of risk". I'll start taking pics.
