For West, who has since posted multiple videos from his raw flights (including his longest, a 21-hour slog from London to Perth, Australia), the practice simply resulted from how much he has to travel for his work in the music industry. “I got sick of watching the same movies,” he says. West likens flying raw to meditation. “Visually, you are kind of impaired. You only get to look at the seat in front of you, to your right or left if you're at the window. All you hear is that drumming sound of the engine. It's just white noise.” But West and others have also come to see rawdogging flights as a kind of challenge, like the Tough Mudder or No Nut November, the goal being to see how fully participants can deprive themselves of creature comforts, up to and including free snack and drinks and even bathroom visits. A true rawdogger takes no indulgences.
All that coffee has to go somewhere...................

A $400 suicide drone designed and assembled by a Ukrainian engineering student can take out a $10 million dollar Russian tank (Russia has even more drones).
Apparently both Ukraine and Russia go through tens of thousands of drones per month.
I’m surprised I’m not seeing a lot of coverage of the dramatic shift away from traditional military equipment like tanks and attack helicopters in Ukraine, and a rapid adoption of FPV (first person view) drones.
We’ve all seen horrifying footage of these drones taking out individual soldiers (very depressing), but there’s been very little talk about the strategic shift going on and what it means.
The implications of this massive paradigm shift are significant.
It appears to be as big of a shift as the move away from horse cavalry in WW1 to mechanized warfare (tanks, airplanes, machine guns, submarines, gas, etc), and we are in the very early stages.
Ukraine has apparently stopped asking the US for tanks and other expensive traditional military equipment and wants supplies for suicide drones and loitering munitions.

We could see swarms of millions of suicidal drones wiping out hundreds of military targets (including aircraft carriers) in a single morning. A 21st century version of D-Day.
Imagine AI doing most of the work of identifying and locating a target, then phoning home to a drone operator to pull the trigger. Drone operators will shift away from “flying” drones and locating targets, and instead will be preoccupied with switching to various drone screens on ready to attack targets dozens of time throughout the day.
And because hard targets like tanks will increasingly become sitting ducks (even with sophisticated jamming that can be overcome by “signal boosting drones”
there will eventually be far fewer hard targets on the battlefield to attack. The primary targets will be humans

The US military... perhaps the Air Force IIRC is toying with the idea of a "loyal wingman" type drone or UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle.) It would fly, mostly autonomously and be able to do things like jam enemy radars, shoot long range air to air missiles or anti-surface missiles at targets designated by the "manned" craft. The Navy is also looking at the tech.
Several demonstrators are already flying.

Saw a video from Ukraine yesterday. A soldier, unknown whether he was Russian or Ukrainian, was running and being chased by something that was out of frame.
He was clearly terrified and kept looking over his shoulder. Finally he stopped running and a small drone flew in and stopped in front of him. The guy just laid down in a ditch and the drone moved in right over him and exploded

Except they're really susceptible to jamming, being confused with lasers, microwaves, etc. Even with a person on the controlling end.
Despite our military leadership being fucktards, the tech we've deployed is, pretty stout. Whether it's used properly is another story.

I took the mens and having no bike tools here, drove it to a shop for new tires, tubes, and a tune up, probably paying more than I could get one off CL, but maybe no because this bike is mint. As in, right out of a time machine, back from the shop.
Here is the coolest thing about it, the bottle dynamo that fires the headlight and taillight. Spindle tilts against the tire.
The incandescent bulbs were no good so I got some 6v 3w LEDs which are LIT LIT LIT. You only need to go like slower than walk speed for the dynamo to power them top bright.

Training drones, that can fly and maneuver like the real hostile ones, but which are armored enough to not take damage from low-energy ammunition being fired by the troops being trained. Maybe the propellers get shot out, and the drone crashes. It gets fitted with new cheap plastic props, and back in service.

Then cut the tops and bottoms off the celery, then cut length to fit the container, rinse the celery, put in the container, put in the ice box and you have crisp celery when you want it.

Talk about going limp... About a week ago, I bought a couple of very healthy-looking strawberry plants from the garden center at WalMart. Even had small green berries on them. They were in hanging baskets, which doesn't work here, because too windy at times. So I transplanted them into my garden bed, potting soil and all, and they appeared to do well for several days, and then one morning, they were all wilted and droopy. I think it was frost got them. Would watering them with Viagra perk them back up?

It is not a good design, if only because it leaves one round in the cylinder at all times and it doesn't have a positive ejection. I don't think well geometrically, and I have looked at possible actions like the magazine lifter from the FN P90 and some sort of rotor with the profile of a truncated cone instead of the cylindrical on, but they all get really complicated when I start trying to draw them out.

I have been informed that the shape is "trochoidal" which I think means it is a rouleaux.. The arc of each side is supposed to fit into a prescribed arc of cylinder and that is one way to guarantee a good fit.

Part 1 of a tour of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, by a guy who overwintered there back in 2021. It was Dec of '21 when he filmed this, I think, or posted it. Anyway, the summer season was just about to begin, and he was soon to ship back home:

He's a medical assistant, if I got it right. I think he said 39 people stayed the winter that time. They have a hydroponics "garden" in there for fresh vegetables and greens.

Up in wonderful WI to see Dad for his 88th tomorrow. So my list to get tomorrow is so far bourbon and Im adding ant traps.
Tho with his consistant low bp we may just stop at the ER. He always waits until Im here for these health issues I swear.

I wondered what time zone they use there. At the poles, there is no time zone, really, it's whatever you want it to be. Just turn around in a circle and go through all 24 time zones. The sun just spins around in a circle, only slowly getting higher and lower over the year.
They use NZ time zone, UTC+12/+13(DST). The reason is McMurdo station, their main "hub" there, is aligned with NZ, as that's where most of the supply and transport comes from.

It's been soggy everywhere in MN, I think, but I'm not in the Minnesota River valley. So safe from this dam break, at least.
The Minnesota does join the Mississippi in Minneapolis.....

.....after running through the south suburbs, but I don't think the additional flood risk from the dam carries that far? The high water is already closing roads bridges without that, though.

The two astronauts that went up to the ISS recently, are sort of stuck as the Boeing Starliner, sits 6, has orientation thrusters leaks. Possibly would be rescued by a SpaceX Falcon 9. Great that we have thw capability now, something unavailable in the Apollo and Shuttle eras.
