44 Moulin de la Galette - Wikipedia
The Moulin de la Galette is a windmill and associated businesses situated near the top of the district of Montmartre in Paris. Since the 17th century the windmill has been known for more than just its milling capabilities. Nineteenth-century owners and millers, the Debray family, made a brown bread, galette which became popular and thus the name of the windmill and its businesses, which have included a famous guinguette and restaurant. In the 19th century, Le Moulin de la Galette represented diversion for Parisians seeking entertainment, a glass of wine and bread made from flour ground by the windmill. Artists, such as Renoir, van Gogh, Ramón Casas[1] and Pissarro have immortalized Le Moulin de la Galette; likely the most notable was Renoir's festive painting, Bal du moulin de la Galette.

50 Bal du moulin de la Galette (commonly known as Dance at Le moulin de la Galette) is an 1876 painting by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

It is housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and is one of Impressionism's most celebrated masterpieces.[1] The painting depicts a typical Sunday afternoon at the original Moulin de la Galette in the district of Montmartre in Paris. In the late 19th century, working-class Parisians would dress up and spend time there dancing, drinking, and eating galettes into the evening.[2]: 121–3  Like other works of Renoir's early maturity, Bal du moulin de la Galette is a typically Impressionist snapshot of real life. It shows a richness of form, a fluidity of brush stroke, and a flickering, sun-dappled light.

72 The Catalan landscape artist Santiago Rusiñol y Prats absorbed the example of Impressionism. He began his studies in Spain and continued them in Paris, where in 1891 he exhibited together with the Impressionists and Symbolists. He was a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. He paid homage to Impressionism by painting Montmartre. His palette in The Kitchen of the Moulin de la Galette was unusually restrained.

101 DeSantis Vetoes All Arts Grants in Florida with no explanation. something that's never been done. Even in the lean years of the Great Recession, at least a nominal amount — say, 5 percent of the recommended total — was approved.

DeSantis gave no explanation for zeroing out the arts grants. His office said in a statement that he made veto decisions “that are in the best interests of the State of Florida.”

DeSantis is running out of ways to look like a hard ass so he's reaching for anything he can cut. Particularly if it hurts LGBT, People of Color, women disproportionately.

Bullies like him get joy by hurting people. DeSantis has done this to demonstrate his deep contempt for positive self-expression in any form. He has done it to show his power over artists, teachers, and communities.

It is as if he saw a group of children happily drawing with brightly colored chalk on the sidewalk and reacted to their obvious joy by stomping the chalk into dust, and by erasing the pretty pictures they had made.

110 From his home office in small-town Kentucky, a seasoned political operative is quietly investigating scores of federal employees suspected of being hostile to the policies of Republican Donald Trump, an effort that dovetails with broader conservative preparations for a new White House.

Tom Jones and his American Accountability Foundation are digging into the backgrounds, social media posts and commentary of key high-ranking government employees, starting with the Department of Homeland Security. They are relying in part on tips from his network of conservative contacts, including even workers themselves. In a move that alarms some, they are preparing to publish the findings online.

112 This would be a sort of 'meh' scene except that the use of light and wonderful detail captures the viewers' (at least this viewer) eye. The bright outside light contrasts with the well-worn interior and that echoes the dark, old woman sitting on the stair. She looks like she has aged with the kitchen. I like his use of perspective and realistic detail on the outer buildings. This isn't a painting I would usually hang but could spend a lot of time looking at.

Check out Santiago Rusinol's Wiki page for some of his other art. The way he uses color, especially blue, has a glowing look that reminds me of Maxfield Parrish.

131 Nearly half of American owners of electric cars want to switch back to traditional cars powered by internal combustion engines, according to a consumer survey released by McKinsey and Co. earlier this month.

The consulting firm surveyed consumers in multiple countries: the U.S., China, Germany, Norway, Australia, France, Italy, Japan and Brazil. Between all of those countries, 29% of electric car owners want to return to driving internal combustion cars, with 46% of surveyed American electric car owners wanting to do so.

This surprised the consulting firm, cutting against received wisdom about people’s switch to electric.

160 The property where I live has been in my family for close to 200 years. There has been a house on this part for 150 years. For most of that time, there was a cellar. Situated underneath a building that functioned as a summer kitchen, a smokehouse, and eventually a storage shed, the steps down into the cellar were cut stone slabs. None of them were the same height. All of them were worn "wavy" from use. A four inch step down followed a ten inch step followed a six inch step and God help you if you stepped on the spot that was worn down two full inches below the rest of that same step. A trip down to the cellar for potatoes or some onions was dangerous.

But in this unit, we try to foster a spirit of unity and esprit de corps. By not wearing the pride patch, it makes it seem like you are excluding and maybe not supportive of your fellow soldiers. While you don't HAVE to wear it, understand that people will view you as someone who is not supportive of all members of the unit, and it may give you a reputation which may have impacts on your career advancement. "The East German Stasi encouraged children to turn in their parents for "anti-socialist thinking." We're not close to that point yet. But we're a lot closer since Joe Biden became (pseudo) president."

This is wrong. The state leans on your kids very heavily to snitch on you for all manner of things. They also, unlike the Stasi, lean on your kids heavily to chop off body parts and hand out hormone blockers in the school nurse's office, claiming you have no right to your child's medical records and no right to be informed or object.

This is significantly worse than the East German bullshit, when you also factor in the county I'm finally GTFO'ing shortly has a full time staff of about a dozen whose literally full time job is to browse social media and file red flag complaints.

The law allows a defense that a statement could be “reasonably inferred” to be a statement of opinion, or if it were retracted with an apology within 14 days. If guilty, the politician would be disqualified from being a Senedd member.

282 They used to issue members triptiques, the series of maps for a trip with flip-over pages so that you could see in detail where you were and where you're going. The last time I asked my local office about that, they said something about "It's all online now." Well, online doesn't help if I'm driving by myself and can't look at the e-map on the phone, now does it?

Could I print the maps out, though?
Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at June 24, 2024

I guess if you can see them online, you could, or at worst do a PrintScreen, open the image in Paint or a similar app, and print from there. I haven't taken a road trip since the Birmingham one, certainly not a recreational trip, so I haven't asked them about the triptique (sp? "triptyque"?) service in a long time.

285 >>Well, online doesn't help if I'm driving by myself and can't look at the e-map on the phone, now does it?

When I first got out of school I had an outside sales job that had me on the road pretty much everyday of the week. I also had a book of maps by my side.

I still do a lot of driving in places I don't know. 2 weeks ago it was Baltimore and Syracuse and last week it was Southern Georgia. My iPhone is way better at directions than books of maps. Even gives up to the minute traffic information.

Get one of those windshield suction cup phone holders. You will never get lost.

286 Hubbymayhem is a truck driver and uses GPS. However, he always has a good old fashioned paper atlas with him.

I suggested that after the girl spawn goes to college, we should pick a direction and just start driving. Let me have the map and I choose what roads we will take. Doesn't matter which road I choose as long as we continue going in the agreed direction.
His expression was a fun combination of amused interest and fear. He knows I'm not good at reading a map.

Just goes to show that our government does nothing but launder money.

Musk does it better for a cheaper cost. NASA contracts the dumpster fire that is Boeing to do something, hands them billions and they fail, miserably, and EVERYONE knew it would.
