  • An AI product without so much AI in it: Gigabyte's 2TB AI TOP 100E SSD has an endurance rating of 219PB. (Tom's Hardware)

I don't know what changes they've made to achieve that, but that is a lot. A typical drive in this category has an endurance rating around 1PB. With the Gigabyte drive you can use the entire disk 100,000 times before you have to start worrying about it wearing out.

Pricing not yet available, but if it's horribly expensive you'll know why.

  • Meta (that is, Facebook) has announced a method to watermark AI-generated speech. (MIT Technology Review)

The code - available on GitHub - adds markers to an audio file that are inaudible to humans but easily detected by the same program.

Which of course means you can simply run the program to delete the markers, but who would do that?

  • If you were hoping for an Arm model of the Framework laptop, sorry, but here's a RISC-V motherboard for it. (Liliputing)

With four 1.5GHz CPU cores it's not going to set any records though. Also, unlike regular Framework laptops, you can't expand the memory or the storage.

It's really just for people developing software for RISC-V embedded systems. Not a huge market but I'm sure they'll welcome this.

  • I'd sooner swallow a wasp: An AI app called Butterflies promises to destroy social media forever. (The Verge)

When you sign up, you create an AI personality called a Butterfly that can post text and pictures on your behalf, and interact with other Butterflies on the platform, so that you can log out and go for a walk while your account that has all your personal information attached discusses homeschooling with an FBIfly.

Uh-oh, it's another one.

I wasn't expecting HoloEN Gen 4 this year, certainly not before HoloID Gen 4.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

The backstory is that they're a team of investigators dispatched to track down HoloEN Gen 3, whose backstory is that they're escaped supercriminals.

That will last for about 0.3 milliseconds before it devolves into chaos.

Uh, yeah, that's one of our terrifying supercriminals there.

Since most of you don't follow the vtubing scene I try to add a disclaimer that vtubers are live broadcasts using animated avatars, rather than anime which is scripted and pre-drawn. But Hololive is also an anime, so they are really not helping.

Also, if you're looking for Reiny or Shizukou, two British indie vtubers who retired earlier this year, you might want to check Globie.

Disclaimer: The doggo and the racing giraffe, respectively.

Vtubers aren't technically anime, though they certainly borrow a lot of anime tropes.

It's live broadcasts using animated avatars.

Though to confuse matters, hang on, I'll add another video.

I'm off today, though with a slate of stuff to handle. Car needs a tire pressure monitor sensor (or maybe only a battery) on one wheel, I have to get some stuff and hope to find some other junk at Lowe's, and I need to hit the grocery. On the good hand, I get to nap for a bit this p.m. Howzabout you?

16 The less than stellar gaming performance was mostly expected, right? As for everything else computing, the thin reporting so far seem to be saying, these are pretty snappy for daily driver tasks and get pretty great battery life which is the primary design metric here, right?

If past is prologue, the the tech writers will pound Prism emulation into the ground over the next few weeks for not being x86 with respect to gaming and dredge up how awful Microsoft's first ARM Surface Pros from 2012 and conclude the new Snapdragon's are same song second verse with a few complaining about the demise of Windows Phones. Plus Apple. Always plus Apple.

What I am getting is these new CPUs are not a bad first truly serious whiff at making ARM an equal with x86 on Windows. You have to start somewhere and this is that moment. In a couple years when it is time to replace my Surface Pro 8 I can't imagine I won't end up with an ARM box.

Now if Microsoft would just put a stake into Recall everything would be much better.

My day is going to be spent deep cleaning the house. Ugh. I will hate every second of it and then when it is done I will go "dang, I love how nice the house is. I should do this more often." The reward for this, because the house good to go, is on Thursday I going to take the new Trail 125 motorcycle on its first expedition to Chopes, est. 1906, in Le Mesa for the greatest bowl of Red Chile Colorado on the planet. The ride down and back will be through the pecan orchards, past the farms, down the dirt irrigation canal roads, and at times along the Rio Grande. It will be a lovely day especially since the temps should be in the 80s instead of the recent 100+ temps.

40 We lived in Southern California in the late 70s back when Republicans were in charge locally and even in the governorship.

My mom wanted out of that place so fast it if her hair was on fire. She just knew the one place she didn’t want to be was there and this was a location. Many would say was great and they would want to go to. Even in a so-called well off neighborhood in Orange County, the teachers there who taught English told the parents they couldn’t spell, so don’t worry too much when they graded the kids.

Even back then, in the 1970s California was gun grabbing they always had crazy laws they were anti 2A.

I have always heard San Diego was great in the 1970s, but I lived in California in Orange County the place that to many is the quintessential California. Even back then, there was a rot about the place, The public schools in particular were horrible.
It is a shame because California is a beautiful state. But if people want to pine for a time when it was a great state, they have to go really really back.

I doubt we ever bring that state into our fold. It is more likely that we simply have to oppose them.

48 At Lowe's, I'm told, they may actually have some of the window blinds that will fit my windows here. It's not the size; Walmart had that. But everything they have now is cordless, and their brand won't fit my current window-blind brackets. Yes, they come with their own. But it looks from the instructions that I'd have to mount the new brackets into the window glass -- clearly a no-go. I'm hoping some older hardware guy at L's will have some decent advice for me, if not an actual blind unit I can use.

I need a plunger and some drain cleaner; might as well get them while I'm there.

59 Ruidoso, NM has been evacuated due to a massive wildfire that is now within the city. Ruidoso is about 2 hours east of Las Cruces in the Sacramento Mountains, elev. 7,000 ft. I mention the elevation because the area is full of junipers and pines; the city and the forest are mostly one and the same. 74 To be clear, many Texans fought bravely and well in the Civil War of course that’s the truth. The most revered units were in Robert Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia although there were also units that fought in the west. But the state of Texas itself was not an area where there were major campaigns from the enemy army, So it was a bit easier, not surrender.

That doesn’t preclude that Texas was majorly involved in the Civil War. In fact the border with Mexico was probably more active than it is today as people supporting the north and south and people making money off the Civil War. We’re all over South Texas. 75 Very few folks in Texas give a shit about Juneteenth and I know I sure don't.

Just more fake ass nonsense from the federal government. Hopefully when the federales are abolished that will be a holiday to celebrate and remember.

Call it Federalteenth.

76 Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday because they hate Trump.

So we've got that going for us.

We got Juneteenth because there was no Federal holiday in June, and federal workers want less work for more money. IMHO, there should be only 5 federal holidays.

Yeah, back in Ohio when my Spectrum went out that the first thing I did. Unplug, wait a couple of minutes and plug back in. I have Xfinity now and haven't had any unexpected disruptions and they are gracious enough to text you if they have to take the service down for any length of time. My old Spectrum service kind of sucked.

93 89, I am surprised they didn’t try to make it into a three day weekend. Yeah, you can say well. It’s based on the specific day but so we’re a lot of other holidays like George Washington’s birthday. Our government is actually twisted and the more weird things. They do the more likely those will always stand.

Juneteenth will always be with us not even Trump would take it back. That’s the thing about the hard left they know when they do crazy stuff it is permanent. People barely even remember the Republican Revolution of 1994, Nothing permanent about that glorious victory.

104 I don’t wanna get weepy here, but since I did bring it up, I shouldn’t have to lay it on the line, but I want to be clear about the one thing. My mom was old-school and all she cared about was her kids and nothing else. In California, she had a great life. I won’t get into it, but my parents did well..

She hated California with the hatred of 1000 sons and the only reason was she thought her kids were not being educated properly. The only reason she wanted to get out of that beautiful place was to give her kids the best chance they could have.

I probably shouldn’t get into personal stuff but there I did it, Maybe it’s better now, but I seriously doubt that, Places don’t normally get better.

Juneteenth is just another progressive Hate White People day. It could be something very different, but, no, it has to be The-Struggle-Must-Go-On and How-Much-There-Is-Still-To-Do. Same with MLK Day: it isn't to honor MLK, it's to tell us what a rotten country we live in.

114 @86/"Perfessor Squirrel":

Related story about having to unplug to reset: At least you don't have one of the DOCSIS 3 modems with an Intel Puma chipset where it loses its mind (and connection) every 24 to 36 hours. I was with a major provider in my area and upgraded my connection from an old DOCSIS modem from Arris to a Hitron, and it came with a Puma 6 chipset.

After a week of putting up with having to turn it off and on again at some random point throughout the day, I had enough and took it back to the provider's storefront and asked for another. The replacement did the same thing.

Back again, and this time they replaced the Hitron with a faster Arris. The old Arris had been a reliable workhorse so I was hopeful. Nope. Same issue.

Looked it up and sure enough, both modems had Intel Puma 6 chipsets, and the issue is documented here:
https://is.gd/YakqXU

The provider tried to play dumb about the issue despite hundreds of reports to them in their forums. I jumped providers, and went with one that could give me a modem with a different chipset entirely. No problems since. Back to reliable which is what I really want.
