Hopefully you will put your .02 in regarding pot sales. Colorado's legal marijuana business is at least one toke over the line as a massive decrease in sales has led to store closures and layoffs across the state. Politico recently reported that Denver's 3D Cannabis dispensary, where Iraq War vet Sean Azzariti became the first person to legally buy recreational marijuana, has "temporarily closed." But the boards on the doors and windows and the dismal state of the parking lot make the closure appear much closer to permanent. Resident of the White House, MushHead decides to have a dick measuring contest with Israel. Yet Iran can do as it pleases. The White House canceled a high-level U.S.-Israel meeting on Iran that was scheduled for Thursday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video on Tuesday claiming the U.S. was withholding military aid, two U.S. officials tell Axios. Why it matters: President Biden's top advisers were enraged by the video — a message U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein delivered personally to Netanyahu in a meeting hours after it was published, two U.S. and Israeli sources say. Then the White House decided to go a step farther by canceling Thursday's meeting. "This decision makes it clear that there are consequences for pulling such stunts," a U.S. official said. However, a TikToker named Meagan (@ladyshreve) says that folks shouldn't be drinking them under any circumstances after her husband ended up begging her to take him to the hospital after he began experiencing chest pains. While there were some TikTokers who agreed with her in the comments section of her post, there were others who said these this instances usually only occur when people are pounding multiple energy drinks in a day along with other sources of caffeine. "My husband didn't really want me to talk about this it when it first happened but it's been six months and we're gonna go ahead and talk about it. This is the story about how I've become the obnoxious person that tells you that energy drinks are dangerous," Meagan says at the beginning of her video, letting everyone know that this is a topic she feels so very strongly about. The Colorado legal marijuana failure is yet another thing in which failure, just like with Joe Biden's pier, was utterly predictable to anyone with even a tiny knowledge of basic human behavior.
What they did in legalizing it was to get rid of all of the criminal penalties for dealing in marijuana; they also dismantled most of the enforcement structure. What former dealer, who wasn't scared of criminal charges, is now going to be scared at the thought of getting a ticket from the revenue police? They've got carte blanche to operate freely, PLUS they will always undersell the state stores because they don't pay the heavy tax burden. When the goods are the same, high cost producers are always driven out of business. That's Econ 101; astounding at how few people in power today seem to grasp something so simple. Ignorant Question: Didn't Mike Johnson and a majority of Rs betray We The People by agreeing to give tens of billions of debt dollars to both Ukraine and Israel? How is it that money allocated by Congress and signed by the Puppet can be optionally granted on whatever terms "President Biden's top advisers" sees fit? Balmy weather has its benefits, but it ain't balmy here in Mississippi. It is Hell Hot and the summer solstice hasn't even arrived yet. And it will get worse and worse as we head into September. The late-May to early October heat here is what Mrs. Drake calls a Southern citizenship requirement. It's coming, and you know it's coming, and if you can ride it out, you've earned your right to live here for another year.
The self-same Mrs. Drake told me last night we should move to Montana after seeing the forecasts for blizzards up that way. I can't really argue against the appeal of that, but we've got family up in Juneau, so maybe Alaska for the win? Two reasons this as not been a good news day:
1) The new FOX News poll is depressing. Biden has had a noticeable uptick, & there's no avoiding that by saying "but look at the internals" or something. It's a bad news bear. It's the top headline at FOX News right now for anyone who wants to see the grim details. 2) The news from Israel is even worse. There is a noticeable war of words between top IDF commanders & Netanyahu. Essentially Gen. Hegari is saying, "Hamas can't be defeated." I wonder if this will be the final straw that destroys the coalition war govt. Certainly Netanyahu's multitude of opponents were getting close to achieving this already. It looks to my untrained eye as if war weariness is setting in. Posted by: mnw at June 19, 2024 10:27 PM (NLIak) 94

There are a number of Colorado Morons here. Hopefully you will put your .02 in regarding pot sales.
It's been a disaster in Oregon, too. Marijuana is an agricultural crop - it's not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The market is oversaturated with pot shops, and not as many people smoke marijuana as the dopers would like to believe. They reconvene in September. If a decision to go to the early election will not be made by June 30, it will be moved to the next session in September, and by law, the election will take place at a minimum three months from the agreement, so at the earliest, it will be December 2024. The left and Biden want to have an election by September, before the American Election. So they've got 10 days to pull that off. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 19, 2024 10:38 PM (S6gqv) 124

It's almost as if when people see the effects of very high potency marijuana - higher schizophrenia rates, much higher rates of psychotic episodes, and how nonfunctional heavy dope users are, that discourages people from using. I've always laughed at the "legalize" crowd.
They were so lost in magical thinking they were incapable of seeing how it would actually turn out." It's like they were all high or something. Posted by: Tom Servo For a significant amount of time, the University of Mississippi hosted one of the very few legal sites for cultivating cannabis. It was tied in to the researchers in Ole Miss's Pharmacy School. There was a very high fence, and a guard tower, that, for a brief period, was occupied by an armed guard. Spotlights and all sorts of security doo-dads. Weed being Weed and college students being college students, there were a number of attempts made to snag a few of the plants. My personal favorite story of that is when a small group of Fraternity guys carefully cased the place and picked the ideal moment at night to use fly fishing rods to grab some herbage. Didn't work, but I admire their effort and originality. Fly-Fishing For Green Bud in Oxford, Mississippi - good title for an aspiring Richard Brautigan. It is for people who want something with more kick than coffee but doesn't make you as irritating as cocaine
There used to be that legal and cheap substance that on the continuum was somewhere between caffeine and cocaine as far as providing that "kick": Ephedra. Apparently Mormons could now get jacked up in the morning like everyone else by drinking Ma huang tea. But like all good things, the USG banned ephedra and legalized weed. Little old lady down in Vicksburg a few decades ago found herself surrounded by local PD and the State Narcotics Bureau, much to her confusion. She was a devoutly religious woman who never even touched anything caffeinated. And now they're calling her a drug dealer?
Their evidence - a beautiful garden of flowers in her front yard, bright red and most appealing. She tells the PD that she's been growing those flowers for years, just like her mother before her, and her grandmother, and great-grandmother. Luckily, there was one level-headed person there who was able to determine what had happened. Those were opium poppies, planted during the Civil War to aid the Confederate Medical Service. By the time of the lady's mother, that aspect of things had been forgotten. They just thought of them as pretty flowers. Given the high incidence of Weed-related topics so fat, I think it fitting to include a Southern alternative to cannabis - Old Sweet Balsam, aka Sweet Everlasting, but known to many in my old neck of the woods as Rabbit Tobacco.
It's a member of the Asteraceae family, related to Daisies, Sunflowers, and somewhere around 32,000 other flowering plants. You can recognize it by its yellow peg-shaped flowers and sweet maple syrup like smell. Rednecks learned from the Five Civilized Tribes that smoking rabbit tobacco could have a mild sedative effect, and even help with some respiratory disorders. It doesn't get one high, but there is a mild soporific quality to it, and it's a good alternative when actual tobacco isn't ready to hand. I have won the debate with myself and so will tell this story. I'll try and be brief. I've always been lucky, as evidenced my my still being alive.
I was at a Vietnamese farm house having lunch one day. I was accompanied by my counterpart, my medic and my interpreter. As we ate a jar of rice whisky, their moonshine, and a shot glass made rounds of the table. This shit would make you teeth numb. My medic didn't drink, so I had to take his shot. After that we played a game of "Spin the Ducks Head". Kind of like spin the bottle but whomever the bill pointed to had to take a shot. It all gets a little blurry after that. Evidently I made it up to the road, as some locals picked me up out of a ditch, put me in the back of a Lambretta three wheeler and delivered me to our team house. I had words with the medic when I sobered up a day or two later. Posted by: javems at June 20, 2024 12:06 AM (8I4hW) 316

The Gregorian's 400 yr cycle gives 97 leap days per 400 years. This estimates the tropical (cycle of seasons) year as 365.2425 days. The current value (as of epoch J2000) is 365.2417 mean solar days per tropical year (this is 365.2419 ephemeris days). Around 1900, when they got this stuff figured out to this high of a precision, the mean tropical year was about 365.2422 mean solar days. Thus the Gregorian is still adding a little too many leap days. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 20, 2024 12:18 AM (w6EFb) 341

If the mean tropical year remained constant, the Gregorian would be good to about 1 day in 3500 years. But because currently the tropical year is getting shorter (this is the long term dance of Milankovitch cycles), and the mean solar day is getting shorter, the Gregorian calendar will be about a day behind in the year 3200. Turns out that it work out to skip the 400 year leap year in 3200, the continue as normal through 3600 and 4000, but then switch to a 500 year cycle. That is drop add century leaps every 500 years. That would keep the calendar in sync to well over 10,000 years in the future. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 20, 2024 12:22 AM (w6EFb) 349

It is funny about language because a lot of people who think they speak it well come off as kind of weird. It is like the people who pronounces the t in often, But don’t pronounce it in glisten and soften. They think that is the received pronunciation, but they’re wrong. Now, if you do pronounce the tea often, no worries I used to do it myself and it is not a big thing.
The French use liaison constantly. The one thing about the French is they want to use as few words as possible and they want to sound as musical as they can. You learn from textbooks wrong because that’s not how they speak and I’m not talking slang on the street but how regular people in middle-class jobs talk and even how the highest in this society talk. We shouldn’t call them out for making their language so complicated because we do the exact same thing though to us it is just normal so we don’t notice it. English pronunciation is the same as the written word either and English is not a phonetic language just like is not. In fact, French is more clear on the rules of pronunciation than our own language. At least they have particular rules that you can apply so pronunciation is not a big thing in French. It is similar to an R, but more like a Korean R. Posted by: Kindltot Could be a dialect thing - in Hochdeutsch the umlaut is akin to an "urr," but some Deutsch speakers render the r more fully, while others sort of chop it off a bit sooner. If you're literally just making the sound for the umlaut O it comes across closer to an OOOO with the lips extended slightly, but once it's included within a word it gets the urr or near urr sound. 453, True there are several states that don’t allow any alcohol to be distilled above 151. True Everclear is 190 proof. If you ever wondered why there isn’t alcohol there is a higher proof. Quint, weren't you the one that recently observed that Spanish got more difficult as you learned more of it? Because that is true. Major league true.
I'll say this much for Deutsch, though - once you make peace with the cases and genders and get a decent working knowledge of the irregular verbs, it actually becomes easier. The only problem you face then, apart from slang, is the German tendency to smash words together and form these huge compound mega-words. Drove over it, checked it out and that didn't kill it. Forget how I finished it off, but I did. Later figured out it was a pair of spotted adders? that can sound, like rattlesnakes. The guy is a scholar on the subject, but you don’t have to agree with him, but his opinions on various words are hoot for me. That is one of my favorite books. And by the way to be clear, I don’t care how anyone pronounces anything. There’s no one rule but fun to see this guy debate and discuss various pronunciations of English words.

Water-ethanol form an azeotrope, at 96% ethanol per volume. That translates to 192 proof (just double the by volume percentage). That's the limit of distillation at 1 atm pressure. You can go to vaccum distillation and make the azeotropic point disappear. But there are other, more economical ways to get pure alcohol. 462, I did. For some reason, there has been a major Misconception in America, that somehow Spanish is the easiest language to learn., Sure, we are all around it and over the decades that is become even more so. But the reality is Spanish is a very complicated language.
American students in high school in college regularly tell their fellow classmates to take Spanish because it is easier than French. Language teachers will tell you that Spanish is easier in the first year or so, because the pronunciation is easier and we have been exposed to more of the Spanish words overtime. But the reality is French is inherently easier language because it gets easier the further you go into it the further you study it while Spanish gets more difficult the further you move into it. French pronunciation is actually simple. There are precise rules and once you learned them, it is easy. If you want to learn the French spoken on the street by regular people, it is even easier because once you learn those rules, you have to pronounce way fewer things.
I like learning Spanish and French. I enjoyed learning them both. But if anyone tells you Spanish is easier to learn than French, then you should know right then that that person knows nothing about either language. The reality is all foreign languages are difficult. There is not a single language to learn.. You have to have a serious serious dedication to learn foreign language. I love studying languages, but I wish I focused only on French or only on Spanish, but for some reason that is not who I am. Looking at myself personally, it makes sense because by nature, I’m always interested in the other thing. Sorry for the deep dive in so quickly, but I agree with you that is not easier than in fact I know people who teach those languages and they will tell you that. The "hottest" offering from the Jim Beam Distilleries is "Booker's", at 127 proof.
Got a bottle for my 40th birthday. THAT was a bourbon that absolutely required an ice cube in the glass, to settle down the proof, the heat and the bite. And it wasn't even that tasty, to boot. Jim Beam is a tasty, middle shelf Bourbon, because it is a TASTY, mid-PRICED Bourbon. Kind of does most everything right, and damn few things wrong. I can name a whole lot of brown liquors that do a whole LOT of things WRONG, and charge a whole lot more money for the privilege of discovering the errors of their ways. 479, there are high proof whiskeys there’s no question about that. But don’t conflict them with Everclear because Everclear is the scientific Way to strip beverage of all of its properties and make it into pure alcohol. High proof, whiskey or closer to what the distiller wanted to make the lower proof like 80 proof are the result of the accountant.
I will give you one great example. Laphroig 86 proof scotch whisky is good. The bear proof version of that whiskey is considered by many to be the best scotch whiskey of that age. It is more difficult to find the barrel proof but if you ever compare them, it is like you’re trying two different whiskeys. It is funny and weird, but very interesting to me that just adding some water to that Laphroig changes the character of the whiskey that much Posted by: Quint at June 20, 2024 02:59 AM (Du8mJ) 486

I say that because there was this thing there where to notice words and type their English equivalent really quickly like almost in a game, just tapping it, tapping and tapping. I have studied Spanish for years, but I tried it with Italian and did almost as well in Italian. No, I do not think that means I’m some crazy gifted language learner. Not a biased opinion, but Italian is probably the easiest European language because it has almost zero exceptions; what you see is what it sounds like. On a related note how did the port city of Livorno get converted to Leghorn in English? Also Genova lost its V in English to Genoa. Pronunciation went nuts: Ge-no-va became Ge-Noah. I have more. Of course Italian has also messed up foreign names: London --> Londra; Berlin --> Berlino Finally some fun: Chicago can be written as Ci cago which means "I shit there". If you didn't know how to pronounce Chicago in English then you would read it as Kicago since the ch has a k sound - always. I had this so-called Mid Atlantic accent myself. That shouldn’t come as as a prize because I grew up in the Mid Atlantic. I was also exposed to the deep south and both coast and a young age.
When it comes to pronunciation, this is a common thing in every language in every country, There is no one proper way to speak, though people do seek them out. I guess in the UK they look to the Royal family as the Received Pronunciation. In France, the Persian accent is what some called the correct one, But that is dumb because the country is huge and there are many different accents. In Spain, they will tell you there is the language or accent of Madrid. They say that because in the deep south of Spain, the Spain, we think of when we think of Spain, they speak very differently. In Italy, they would tell you the language of Florence or in particular the City of Sienna has the best diction. I speak like the man on the news as the old thing says, but that is just happenstance. When I find interesting is studying these things to me it is about learning and enjoying the endeavor. No one pronunciation is better than the other( It is literally retarded to think that that is so. Posted by: Quint at June 20, 2024 03:52 AM (Du8mJ) 528

The city in which I grew up.
NOR-folk is the typical pronunciation outside of the area. NOR-fuk is local version, the more common one. Typically English verbal shortening, too. Like the name 'Chomondsley' being pronounced 'Chum-lee'. NAW-fuk is the older version. I use the last two interchangably. There was also drama training at school and some years of radio announcer work for me. But yes, people are all different. Though when I was dating, hearing the classic "Yat" dialect ("Goin' to make groceries, dawlin'") coming from a girl made me, unfairly, deduct about 10 IQ points from my estimation of her. . . . .both Mrs. Drake and I were creatures of the Big Three networks (sometimes Big Two if the antenna wasn't properly adjusted - our family used a pipe wrench to do it) and I think that did shape us in a linguistic sense. Huntley and Brinkley along with John Chancellor later on were staples in both our homes, and add in some of the entertainment and game show programming, and I can see that having an effect.

At the tire store yesterday, it turned out I needed two tire pressure sensors. One had gone, and the battery on another was about to go out. They tend to last 8-10 years, I understand, and my car is somewhere around 8-9 years old, so it's not surprising. The TPMS has saved my bacon a couple of times. I'm glad to keep it working.

Posted by: Quint My brief time living in the UK introduced me to a number of words where the Brits just threw standard pronunciation out the window. A Mr. Menzies, for example, was to be called "Mr. Ming-ess." My personal favorite, though, since it was a common name where we were, was Featherstonehaugh. Brits pronounced it as "Fan-shaw." We also, slowly and unconsciously, picked up some of the local idiom, and while it faded once we were safely back in the Land of the Free, both the Missus and I sometimes find ourselves saying "I might do," or talking about going to "post a letter." We also got to see peak Nineties programming on the three available networks in our flat, which led to our discovery that the UK has (or at least had) professional Fussball tournaments. Yes, with the rods and the little soccer players. Eerie. Posted by: John Drake Is Now Rounding The East Coast Of The Caspian Sea at June 20, 2024 04:23 AM (u/Zei) 559
547; my mother was terribly intelligent, but could not ever understand English accents. I have always had a knack for accents so he in the Scottish brough meant nothing to me.
Some have a tin ear for four languages. There is no question about that, but that does not criticize their intelligence in fact and someways. It might make them more intelligent to filter out things that slide out don’t mean anything to them. I like studying for languages, but to be honest people have no clue how difficult it is to learn a foreign language. It is like people who want a black in karate and get Discouraged when they realize it might take five years. To really learn the foreign language conversionally and fluently in this country if it is not Spanish, it is probably gonna take you up to 10 years and that is doing it diligently every day. Spanish could be easier but at the same time you were gonna have to engage with people on a daily basis and in my recent experience, unlike back in the 1980s, they don’t want to speak Spanish with you in general. They are not impressed and they don’t care., I might sound harsh, but that is what I am seeing on the ground, People say Spanish speakers Posted by: Quint at June 20, 2024 04:23 AM (Du8mJ) 560

Get all excited when Anglo speak their language. That might have been true in 1980 but it is not true today.: Still, it is cool to know the Spanish language you get to know what they are saying about you or around you and if you’re in a difficult situation, you can speak with that person and communicate. I personally would tell someone who is just thinking of learning another language to not waste their time because it takes a crap load of time and I’m not kidding. Better to learn your language better better to study some literature and Poetry. Drelli is the rest of the world particular of the European world is studying English medley and they do it for one reason alone to make money.
If you still care about languages, go for it, I like French, but I also like Spanish. If there was nothing on the table, I would go with Italian because for sure that is the most enjoyable language to learn. In the end, if you really care about studying for languages, do it I’m not trying to dissuade you. But there is an argument to be made that improving. Your own language is better because the speakers of that foreign language would give anything to be better than English.. Posted by: Quint at June 20, 2024 04:28 AM (Du8mJ) 565

R soon as I heard Africa hot I knew exactly what you were referring to.
I recall being on a tourist bus in Seville, Spain, and it comes on you slowly, but you realize you are cooking:. The humidity is low, but the heat is very high as we went round and round on that bus I would check out the bank thermometer sign, and even in Europe that sign said 100 degrees. I have family in Austin and just as being a part of living there they pretend the temperature Is not what it is. It is the thing they do if you don’t acknowledge it it’s not happening. Where I live, we might get 100° once or twice in a five-year period. Even four or five days in a row in the 90s is weird and unusual. I never call out my Texas relatives because the sun is just much brighter there it’s not going to change and it is simply part of their life. I could never live in that heat again. I’ve done that I’ve been there but no way I’m going back to boil in that. Posted by: Quint at June 20, 2024 04:46 AM (Du8mJ) 574
