The idea of corporations being able to donate money to charitable causes seems benign, but it obviously isn't. Perhaps a return to the first principles of business is in order. Stop all extraneous spending, and return all profits to the business or to the investors. Let them make the decision of where their charity goes!

Nonprofits should not be exempt from income tax.
Only property and sales taxes.
And no exempt status unless:
No salary permitted for board positions.
No total compensation in excess of 4x the poverty rate; including in-kind, benefits, or receipt of value from any connected source (e.g. donor pays for car/airfare/etc.)
Americans really need to discard the silly notion that nonprofits are all charities and churches feeding the hungry.
They are multimillion dollar money laundering and make-work jobs for the rich and connected.

The reason corporations have money to donate is because they accumulated it in the first place. The reason corporations are able to do that is because they enjoy legal protection to accumulate capital and spend that capital as they wish.

They are not.
They choke out funding to smaller charities on the pitch that they are better positioned to collect and manage donations.
Then they dole out meager distributions. Cause their overhead and favored char get the bulk.
But, they basically threaten donors to not donate directly.
Oh, and you want to get involved in the administration and board. Just need you to make this "voluntary" donation to United Way first. Naturally.

I have 4 charities I donate to and frequently check how they are spending the money.
The one thing I do dislike about charities is the effort they make and money they expend to solicit donations. My mom , rest in peace , had such a kind heart she gave to at least 3 dozen charities though just small amounts every month or so. I'm still getting solicitation mail and gifts from most of them 2 years after her death.

I personally believe minarchism in governments, business, and alleged charitable organizations, is probably the best way to preserve human liberty.

126 Pro tip on air conditioning. I bought one of those little table top "air conditioners" (actually a small swamp cooler) and in the event of a power outage it would get the job done. You can recharge it off the car USB. Fill with water, ice if you have it, point it in the right direction and it's a lot better than nothing. Tried it out in our high humidity area and it's OK.

And the coffee shops were attached to a real estate company. This was probably never a very profitable business and if I had to guess, was kept running to keep store fronts from being empty. Just not worth it to continue. Cut and run.

This! Some sort of sunset law for foundations. Use your original endowment for its intended purpose, and spend it down to zero. Salary caps for all employees. When the cash in the till is less than a year's salary for all the employees, declare a bonus for every employee, and close the foundation.

That all died and went away. What hasn't gone away - all the municipal funding requirements to keep everything going, that are no longer funded by the "middle class".

This topic brings up an issue I don't have a good answer for, and may have been out of the scope of thinking for many of the Founding Fathers.
What happens when individuals or companies have such extreme wealth and power that they rival the government, at least within certain spheres and domains. What happens when their goals are not in line with the government, or even the people?
Obviously similar entities existed at the time of the founding (the was West and East India companies and such), but they worked almost as a privatized extension of the government. Rich, troublesome individuals could be (and were) seized, arrested, and executed by the monarch if required.
Google, Apple, Amazon...they control information, shape public opinion by censoring some information, and boosting others, and get cover from the government because any politician running to reign them in will be horribly hindered online, with no recourse.
And let's not get started on OVERSEAS, FOREIGN entities doing the same thing against our interest.
What happens when individuals or companies have such extreme wealth and power that they rival the government, at least within certain spheres and domains. What happens when their goals are not in line with the government, or even the people?

My understanding was the shops were losing money and this made it worse. They would be facing a union busting charge if it weren’t the case. And if you don’t think a union adds cost - even if you lower wages in negotiations (which can happen) the waste on time spent in grievances, arguing whose job it is to press the green button because work now grieve later never works out the short term, and negotiations and contingency planning, all adds up. Not to mention they just got this union in, no contract exists at the moment.

That went away with the dollar devaluations, and the "oil price" shocks near as I can tell. The Milk Man was a career, and I suppose retire after 20 and get a gold watch.

I think history records JP Morgan, the man himself, had to bail out the federal government once. More or less. I had this discussion with someone a while back.
Those "Robber Baron" era guys were pretty philanthropic in a lot of ways. And if you compare their percentage of wealth compared to the GNP, this was a lot higher than some of the really wealthy today.

Similarly, the early Federalist papers contain a litany of why previous societies failed including the Articles of Confederation government.

From an earlier thread this morning there was discussion of American equipment being found all over the world. On a similar note I stopped at a house on I-45 about an hour south of Corsicana one time. The owner had a couple of old cars for sale along the highway so I went in.
The guy had all kinds of stuff on his property and an interesting specimen was a tiny Caterpillar dozer. I don't think it was even 6' long with a blade about 3-4' wide. He told me it was from the era of the TVA beginnings. They had brought in a whole lot of these tiny dozers to begin the process of gaining access to the forested hills of Tennessee in the 30s.

At my last job, there was pretty intense pressure by management to participate in the automatic deductions from your pay to let the corporation donate all that to the United Way. I wrote my name on the envelope for the form that got dropped off my desk, shredded the form, stuffed the shredded strands into the envelope, and returned it to our UW coordinator. I wasn't the only one either.
Did we get pressured in response? Sure did. Didn't bow to it though. If the company wanted to donate to the United Way and get all those social bragging rights, it could do so with its own profits, not my wages. I earned those, I get to say what they're spent on.

I wrote my name on the envelope for the form that got dropped off my desk, shredded the form, stuffed the shredded strands into the envelope, and returned it to our UW coordinator. I wasn't the only one either.
Did we get pressured in response? Sure did. Didn't bow to it though. If the company wanted to donate to the United Way and get all those social bragging rights, it could do so with its own profits, not my wages. I earned those, I get to say what they're spent on.

In my experience wildfires, Red Cross shows up with lots of stuff and people and does fairly little. Salvation Army did a lot, as did local charities.

Red Cross raises money for a specific disaster but a large portion of it is squirreled away for regular Red Cross business. Then there is the whole vampiric blood bank issue where they charge vast amounts to the hospital (and thus to patients) for blood but have adamantly refused to push states to change laws banning payment for blood donors.
I haven't thought well of the Red Cross since the 80's and they exemplify the worst of our mega ngo behavior.

The Mail man. Maybe the Coal man. Or the Ice man (same company depending on time of year). The Rag man would pay money for rags. The Meter Man would stop by to read the electricity meter. If you had oil heat the Oil guy would need to fill up. Then the Milk man would drop stuff off in the morning. The Paper Boy would deliver all the newspapers, sometimes twice a day.
Mail delivery was twice a day for quite a while, at least for businesses maybe. In London, they would have 8 deliveries. Gals at home would write "What do you want, we're having roast beef sammiches today" etc. Send a letter home to figure out what lunch is going to be.
One thing that would help a Barista (or anyone else) is to scrap the tax and "refund" system. Nobody who makes less than say, 500k owes any taxes. That's fair. No "refunds" or credits either.
My dad once suggested that they should only tax people who make under say, 200K a year. Sounds kind of devious to me, but that might work. Everybody would bust their ass to make sure they are earning more than 200k! That oughtta keep things humming along, right?

They earn over a million when they leave office for pension. I am here to tell you, as someone who had to sign off on exec comp structures, $400k for a CEO is nothing. A total package is going to be multi million for a company of any size, about $5-6m base and the rest stock up getting to about $25M/ year. This is average.
