Val news, willowed from the Pride thread. Val went to the vet today for a follow-up. They took more X-rays that they sent to the radiologist for evaluation. Val's temperature was normal, there was no elevated white-cell count and his breathing was unexceptional. I tried to explain that it's difficult to determine the depth and rhythm of a Borzoi's breathing because when they're on their side, it's difficult to tell if they're actually alive. The vet thought it would be all right for him to go back out to the kennel on restricted activity, as the place is air-conditioned and there's a guillotine door that can be used to close the pen in. It's the wrong kind of Pride for this blessed and holy month, but we're the kind of clients our vet loves. The dogs are in good condition. They're well socialized and easy to work with. Her Majesty and I know their general condition and can spot when something is wrong but we don't go to pieces over it. We can explain clearly why we've brought them in. We do the follow-up faithfully. And, if God forbid, we're faced with That Decision, we face it with sorrow but not hysterics. And we're there for them when they go. Libertarianism died as an ideology in the 90s, ironically as the LP achieved some minor relevance.
In "reaching out to the youth" they stopped focusing on liberty and started focusing on drug legalization. Yes yes there is an argument for drug legalization but out of all the things the government did then, and the far more it does now, drug legalization flat out does not matter. But they won over their stoners and now the LP seems to be just another socialist party...but focused on pot. So if you like your 15 minute city/prison...but with a nice selection of types of weed, well, the LP are certainly your people... Posted by: 18-1 at June 14, 2024 10:14 PM (ibTVg) 42

Posted by: gKWVE That's not how they work. The field is focused right at the point where your head/body is in the 'doughnut' ring. When turned on anything that is attracted moves at great speed to the focal point of the magnetic field. Very early in MRI machine use someone was getting their brain scanned and someone tried to move an O2 bottle (full size) through the room. The bottle and head 'merged'. Wheelchairs become modern art now and then too if anyone leaves them in the room when the MRI is turned on. PSA: take off everything that isn't *you* when you go to get an MRI. On the eve of the so-called "Peace Conference" in Switzerland (which Russia wasn't invited to) Vlad Putin made the following peace proposal: 1. Ukraine becomes neutral, and never joins NATO. The author of the guns and civilization piece, Marko Kloos, is also a great science fiction author. His "Front Lines" series chronicles what happens when the Americans and the Russo-Sino Alliance, which have been fighting over the possession of colony planets for decades, are suddenly faced with a Very Big Bad Alien invasion. Suitable reading for those who enjoy a smart military blog.

Quick drive-by comment on my way to bed. To go with the concluding piece, have a somewhat loose prose translation of Wilhelm Busch's poem "Fox and Hedgehog," which I think was written just after the end of the Franco-Prussian War:
A hedgehog was walking through the wood one day, minding his own business, when he met a fox. "Hey, you scofflaw!" said the fox. "Don't you know the war's over? The king's banned private citizens from bearing arms in peacetime. Hand over your prickles!" "Not so fast!" replied the hedgehog. "You break your teeth first. Then we can talk." And he curled up into a bristling ball "and thus confidently defied the whole world," Busch concludes, "armed, but a hero of peace." Posted by: Elisabeth G. I noticed another element to the climate bs today, which has been there my whoooole life, unseen.
They always talk about the coming bs global rise in temperature in what. In celsius. Because it's a smaller number. They're such deceitful children. All we need to do is rise 1.5 degrees *celsius* in the next 50 years and we're screwed. But never in Fahrenheit. Because that would be more like 3 degrees and everyone instinctively knows that shit just ain't happening. Posted by: ... at June 15, 2024 01:36 AM (lX8VI) 363

Honestly, why is Carlsberg so difficult to acquire here in the South? And other parts of the country as well, apparently. Don't they do what a number of other breweries do and outsource their production to someone on this side of the Atlantic?
I mean, otherwise, did Denmark *do* Something? They're a pretty whimsical people who are oddly obsessed with elephants in my experience. Did we diss Hans Christian Andersen or something? Are they pissed that we attempted to buy Greenland? Posted by: John Drake, The Kopet Dag Behind Him, Is Within Yards Of The Caspian Sea at June 15, 2024 02:53 AM (u/Zei) 395

Germanic, Farmer, but not Danish. My wife and I just really got fond of Carlsberg while living in the UK and can't find it anywhere within 500 miles of where I now live. Tuborg Gold is pretty awesome, and I have heard good things about their Special Brew - Churchill was supposedly a big fan.
One story that I always hoped was true was that, in recognition of his scientific genius, Carlsberg ran a line into his home that would allow him to fill a pint of lager just by turning on the tap. There is a Macedonian family here, ran one of our favorite restaurants.
Posted by: Farmer One of the landmark eateries in Jackson, Mississippi (Mrs. Drake's home town) was The Elite, founded by a pair of Macedonian brothers. Great for a family dinner, but also a favorite lunchtime stop for members of the State Legislature as well as city and federal government officials. That was the highlight of every trip we made to Jackson - they employed the same wait-staff as long as they could, and you were welcomed as a friend after you became a regular. Mr. Pete, the younger of the two brothers, who had the nickname "Stoneface," held court in one booth and made sure that everything ran smoothly. It was a Covid lock-down casualty, and its loss is still deeply felt to this day by us and so many, many others.
