And the word got changed over confusion whether people were saying "a numpire" or "an umpire." The word "orange" similarly got changed due to incorrect parsing of the "a" and "n." The Spanish for orange is naranja, and English speakers weren't sure if the word was "a naranja" or "an oranja." We wrongly interpreted it as the latter. A crystal-clear lake in Lofoten, Norway. The contemporary economy of eastern Patagonia revolves around sheep farming and oil and gas extraction, while in western Patagonia fishing, salmon aquaculture, and tourism dominate.
Etymology and toponomies The name Patagonia comes from the word patagón.[7] Magellan used this term in 1520 to describe the native tribes of the region, whom his expedition thought to be giants. The people he called the Patagons are now believed to have been the Tehuelche, who tended to be taller than Europeans of the time.[8][9] Argentine researcher Miguel Doura observed that the name Patagonia possibly derives from the ancient Greek region of modern Turkey called Paphlagonia, possible home of the patagon personage in the chivalric romances Primaleon printed in 1512, ten years before Magellan arrived in these southern lands. This hypothesis was published in a 2011 New Review of Spanish Philology report.[10] Posted by: andycanuck (ZdexC) at June 14, 2024 07:55 PM (ZdexC) 61

Thought Ace was making it up, but the Online Etymology Dictionary tells it this way.
umpire (n.) mid-14c., noumper, from Old French nonper "odd number, not even," in reference to a third person to arbitrate between two, from non "not" (see non-) + per "equal," from Latin par "equal" (see par (n.)). Initial -n- lost by mid-15c. due to faulty separation of a noumpere, heard as an oumpere. Originally legal, the gaming sense first recorded 1714 (in wrestling). https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=umpire Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at June 14, 2024 07:59 PM (klJTj) 67

Imagine the response if Joe Biden had made the same remarks. Greg Price @greg_price11 Jun 13 I'll keep this in mind the next time Joe Biden tells the story of when he taught constitutional law at UPenn, that cannibals ate his uncle, that he was a civil rights activist, that he was arrested with Nelson Mandela, or that he had secret service protection as a senator in the '70s. ====== BTW, PDT was adlibbing a joke about he'd rather be eaten by sharks than be electrocuted to death in an electric boat, having something to do with something Newsom said. The cases before the court involved migrants who failed to appear for their deportation hearings and were ordered deported in absentia. Years later, when the government tried to deport them, they said their proceedings were marred by an inadequate initial summons.

Posted by: Dr_No at June 14, 2024 08:25 PM (ayRl+) No disagreement on the OIL RULES. Because, it does. Those "sawtooth" edges though? They're on the trailing edge of the blade, and are there to help reduce the deep bass "thump" that the +/- 200 mph blade tip makes as it passes near to the ground. Look at the engine nacelles of a Boeing 787 or a 737 Max, and you'll see a similar "sawtooth" pattern cut into the trailing edge of the main fan enclosures. They really do work on breaking up the "coherency" of the sound waves as those waves "depart" those particular surfaces. The word "orange" similarly got changed due to incorrect parsing of the "a" and "n." The Spanish for orange is naranja, and English speakers weren't sure if the word was "a naranja" or "an oranja." We wrongly interpreted it as the latter.
>>> 88 The Wikidingdong entry on Orange, however, does have this... "The word ultimately derives from a Dravidian language – possibly Tamil நாரம் nāram or Telugu నారింజ nāriṃja or Malayalam നാരങ്ങ nāraŋŋa — via Sanskrit नारङ्ग nāraṅgaḥ "orange tree". From there the word entered Persian نارنگ nārang and then Arabic نارنج nāranj.[2] The initial n was lost through rebracketing in Italian and French, though some varieties of Arabic lost the n earlier." Old man Murphy and old man Sean were contemplating life when Murphy asked, “If you had to get one or the other, would you instead get Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s?
“Sure, I rather have Parkinson’s”, replied Sean “‘Tis better to spill a couple of ounces of Jameson whiskey than to forget where you keep the bottle!” Posted by: runner at June 14, 2024 09:34 PM (V13WU) 210

Paddy Irishman checks into a hotel for the first time in his life and goes up to his room. Five minutes later he calls the desk and says, “Ya have given me a room with no exit. How do I leave?”
The desk clerk says, “Sir, that’s absurd. Have you looked for the door?” Paddy Irishman replies “Well, there’s one door that leads to the bathroom. There’s a second door that goes into the closet. And there’s a door I haven’t tried, but it has a ‘do not disturb sign on it.” Posted by: runner at June 14, 2024 09:37 PM (V13WU) 213

I hoped I'd retire with a small ice cream and cake social but instead I was escorted off the site.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh My leaving was very anti-climatic. Tried to walk around and say tata to my old workmates but there were damn few around. Walked out to the main gate, gave my badge to the guard, shook his hand and walked to the car. I had processed it all by the time I arrived home. Posted by: Tonypete Since I was working from home when I retired it was all emails back and forth to various departments. Easy peasy. I did get a $300 Amazon gift certificate though. That was unexpected and nice. Posted by: Tuna at June 14, 2024 09:50 PM (oaGWv) 226

As a fan of all things astronomical, I can say the middle of the Pacific Ocean is the place you wanna be to observe anything. My big thrill was seeing the astronomical things from the southern hemisphere. Everything is different down there! Even the water in the toilet flushes in a different direction. When we were living in Michigan, we experienced a ceiling collapse in the living room. The previous owner had installed solar panels on the roof and pipes in the attic "for the extra hot water" (in Michigan, go figure). One cold spring, the pipes froze and burst, and down came the ceiling. We were cleaning up insulation throughout the house for weeks.
