No, it's really not. I work with an Australian partner and Australia is much closer in law and culture to the Canada than it is to the US. Perth is the only part of Australia that is remotely like what most Americans think Australia is like.
Much like Canada it has held its allegiance to the crown far longer than we did and the culture and laws are much more similar to the UK and Canada than here. Crocodile Dundee does not live in Sydney or Brisbane or most definitely not Melbourne.

All good and if you don't like the ocean that's fine. But the facts don't lie. Shark attacks get a lot of ink primarily because they are rare and kind of like alien attacks. We tend to shrug and so "Oh well" when someone is just shot or stabbed to death by another human but when a shark attacks, which is exceeding rare given the numbers, it's a major story.
But the fact remains the later is far more common and the occurrences are happening much more regularly. We tent to pretend it won't happen to us because if we did we would never leave our homes.
You are far more likely to get murdered by another human than you are by a shark or a lighting bolt or both but you still leave your house everyday and don't blink an eye. I trust actual sharks a lot more because facts.

It's Casey Anderson and one of the bears he trained, I think that one is Cocoa. He used to work out at the same gym that I did in the 90s and he and his brothers would bring Cocoa into town in a two-ton truck that had a wire cage holding Cocoa in. Flags are only updated on July 4, so there never was a 41 star flag.
Actually, after New Hampshire and Kentucky were added as states, and the flag changed to 15 stars and 15 stripesthe flag wasn't updated again until, I believe, we had 20 (maybe 21) status. That's when it was decided to just stick with 13 stripes but keep adding stars for each Staten.
I'm guessing a lot of you already know this and will correct any errors my cops editor made above.

Actually some good news on that front. A solid date has been set for a serious K9 search with excavation to be guided by the dogs rather than GPR.
These are some serious dog handlers coupled not with the County Sheriff (God bless his pea picking heart), but with the CO Bureau oof Investigation. They trust their dogs better than GPR and will dig on the spot if thee dog signals. We will have a definite yes or no by the end of this month.

1-5 years
then if going to college -- several years of high school

In the old days before "railroad time" (ie Time Zones and GMT offsets, now UT/UTC), time was an entirely local thing. One couldn't travel or communicate fast enough for that to make any difference.
The Equation of Time was known since the Romans, and formalized to pretty good understanding by the 17th century or so, but that didn't even matter really.
One set one's watch/clock to noon when the sun was directly overhead. They had a clever little prism device, much cheap that a transit scope that could tell local high noon to within 5 minutes.
You aligned the thing due south. When the sun was off meridian, it would project two images of the sun. At high noon, those two images would merge, and that was High Noon.
There's a name for that device, I forget.

That part of Oregon in mountain time zone is just the northern part of one largish county. Not even the whole county.
It has to do with the politics of which "hub" of civilization a part is close to, seems like, and that can get crazy. I was reading that parts of the county to the west in Oregon "unofficially" go on Mountain time to be in sync.

Playing pickup baseball and other games as a kid taught one not to be an asshole. Other kids will let you know pretty damn quick when you're acting like one, sometimes with a little force behind the complaint.
Also, kids revert to a Lord of the Flies lifestyle without proper discipline.

The constitution sets an upper limit on the reps/people ration, no more than 1 per 30K (lower limit on people per rep ratio), but does not set a lower limit.
That limit is the "faction" limit, but they did not set a "cabal of the few" limit.
There are arguments the House should be more like 2000....

If we stuck to that ratio - 30K to one Rep, assuming the population is 330 million (we need a Constitutional amendment restricting the Census to counting citizens only - that would deeply piss off the government), we are looking at a HR that is as twice as big as the nearest town to me - 11,000 members.

1:30K would be too much, really, but I do think we're at the "cabals of the few" level, and need to expand it.
The idea (and read the Federalist Papers for the thinking from the Horses' Moufs on this) was that an individual representative shouldn't be that big of fucking deal.
Think of how the Bigs see it. They've got 435 they need to buy off. Raise that to 2000, and that's a little too much.
The way the law about this is now is there is a "soft" limit of about 435. The ratio expands to keep that number constant, but each state gets shifted around as the population balance shifts around.

Re the "faction" vs "cabals of the few" the Founders were Going On About. Faction: too many representatives (which they set at 1 per 30K), allow very local, penny-ante differences to rise to the national level.
A whimsical example here in South Carlackey. Too many reps, and you get Clempson vs Gamecock disputes at the national level. The Founders wanted each rep to have to handle the Clempson vs Gamecock level at his own conscience.
Cabals of the few: the rep to people ratio gets so low that they become an elite, like the Senate. They no longer give a shit, and cut deals with themselves or are bought off.
It's funny that they didn't set a cabals of the few limit.

Now, the Senate was supposed to be the Elite, the American aristocracy. That was checked and balanced by the House, which was to be the "hot blood of the people".
The 17th Amendment, popular election of state senators, fucked all that up. Indeed, and I agree, that was the one of the biggest architectural changes to the federal govt ever done, and it fucked things up mightily.
The Senate was supposed to represent the states, state goverments, not the people directly. The 17th took the state governments out of the loop entirely.
The history of the 17th amendment is complicated. There was a lot of corruption going on, but it did alter the balance of power between the federal govt and the states greatly.
