13 Some Steve Jobs magic introducing the MacBook Air in 2008. Looking back, to me, the MacBook Air is the most significant PC of the last 25 years as it defines the modern laptop. The second most significant PC is Microsoft's Surface Pro though it took the three tries to get it right and five more, version 8, to perfect it.

I first saw "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World" as a teenager in the '80s. They ran it one Sunday afternoon.

You know the expression "ROFL", rolling on the floor laughing? I literally did that, right there in the den of the house during that hardware store scene. I stood up out of a chair, my knees got weak, and I just fell in the floor, rolling and laughing.

The scene where Jonathan Winters destroys the gas station single handedly did it too. I may have pee'd myself a little bit during that.

16 "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World" Is one of my favorite 1960s movies. It seems Stanley Kramer called up all his pals and said let's make a movie about what you guys do best which is being funny.

21 The Jonathan Winters station is brilliant and the use of practical effects is masterful. The airplane scene where the beechcraft was flowen through a Coca-Cola billboard is a classic practical effect. Jim Baccus, Mickey Rooney, and Buddy Hackett are just magnificent in that whole sequence.

24 >> The airplane scene where the beechcraft was flowen through a Coca-Cola billboard

I'm trying to remember something about that scene. The plane was flown by a stunt pilot, and the billboard material was supposed to be some sort of flimsy material. Somebody got their wires crosses and the billboard material was stronger than it was supposed to be, and the plane suffered some damage. The pilot, being a master, saved the day.

He was later killed doing some stunt.

The pilot was Frank Tallman. He also flew the plane under and through a hanger. For real.

They would never be allowed to do stunts like that now. It would have to be CGI.

Tallman didn't die doing a stunt. It was a routine flight. He flew in a mountain, Santiago Peak, during bad weather.

An experienced, hell of a stunt pilot, did a controlled flight into terrain.... That shows you....

Tallman's business partner during the Mad, Mad World shooting was another stunt pilot, named Paul Mantz.

He died later flying a stunt scene for some movie. The investigation found he may have been drinking a bit too much the night before and was perhaps hung over.

This is disputed.

Mantz was very good at "outside loops". Look that up. High negative g's pulled.

60 Watched the 2023 (?) Dune -- Part Two last night. Impressive stuff. My memories of the original book are dim, it's been (mumblety-mumble) years, but they came back and were enough for me to follow the story.

I don't see why Paul would fall for the unattractive Chani -- Princess Irulan was much better-looking all around. Aside from that the casting was very good. Miss Linda keeps thinking the sandworms should be like gigantic pets of the Fremen. (Insert eye roll here)

It's time for somebody to reissue the parody, Doon, which National Lampoon published in '84 and which I remember details from better than I do from the original.
