  • Just in time for the weekend, there's a new critical security vulnerability in PHP. (Ars Technica)

    Sysadmins worldwide panic.

    On Windows.

Sysadmins worldwide go back to sleep.

If you have Chinese or Japanese language packs installed and run PHP on Windows, Windows itself will helpfully slip unsafe characters past the normal security mechanisms and into database queries where they will wreak havoc.

There are several fatal design flaws working together to make this a problem, and none of them are unique to PHP.

Though PHP is still awful and nobody should use it for anything, ever.

Random Anime Music Video of the Day

Song is Hall om mig by Nanne Gronvall. Anime is Princess Tutu, the greatest story ever told about a duck who saves the world through the power of ballet.

It's like... Someone took Swan Lake, turned it inside out, shook out all the parts, and put it back together, only somehow better and also even more weird.

Disclaimer: No ducks were harmed in the filming of this video. Much.

5 Adobe did change its license terms to grant itself permission to steal your content, but Adobe says Adobe would never do that except in certain very specific circumstances, such as if it really wanted to.

Okay, maybe "steal" is a little too harsh of a word.

How about "borrow permanently"?

12 Microsoft and Adobe are going out of their way to be completely retarded this week it seems. There antics make you wonder if anybody's sentient is actually showing up for work or if they're letting AI run the place.

Microsoft's roll out of Recall Is one of the most ham-fisted things I've ever seen them do. Microsoft kicks out the door preview software all the time to get feedback so them doing that with recall is pretty normal. What's not normal is they did it with Stasi spyware; by definition, creating an index of everything you do on your computer is spyware and a cop's wet dream. Making matters really bad is the product was so half baked that the critical features were non-existent while messaging that they were there. Totally dumb. And finally the one part they never articulated is the elevator pitch about why I would want this in the first place. It all feels like they're casting around for a killer app so they can mainstream AI to the unwashed masses. Instead what they did was piss everybody off so they want to kill Microsoft instead. Total rollout cock-up score: 9.9.

If Adobe ever gets around to becoming a straight-up extortion play, meaning they no longer ship products and just hold your your data hostage, I will be awarding them 14 points.

No, they wanted the full field of digits. I don't think you're correct about the last digit, unless it's been changed. For example:

My last four digits* = 1821
My sisters last four = 1822
My brothers last four = 1820

The beginning digits are a location code. If you're giving away the last four, there's a chance someone can figure out where you were born and guess the first five.

Recently my electric company screwed up their web page so I couldn't log in. At that point I sent them an email asking for somebody to call me so we could sort this out. Instead I got an email back from them and before they would provide technical support they wanted my address, my account number and my full social security number sent to them via email. Having a sense of humor I wrote them back and told them they are the electric company and not the goddamn IRS and I wasn't about to give him that stuff plus I was already their customer. In reply I got back an email that admonished me for getting snippy. Miraculously their stupid web page started working again and I just gave up on banging my head against the wall.

If it was 'the usual' settlement in sexual abuse cases they seem to settle around $350,000. I think the BSA expected 10,000 cases and allocated a 20% bankruptcy to provide that amount. Instead, nearly 10X as many claims were filed. I think the math is easy at 10% of $350,000. In my case, not worth it. I'm far from poor and the risk of title/identity theft is significent.

Yeah. Nobody uses the first three as a verbal identifier anymore. Asking for a whole SSN is verboten also. Last four only.

There are many other ways a company has to verify ID these days which I won't get into but SSN isn't as important as it used to be as an identifier.

anecdotal, sure, but when I was looking for a job last summer, probably two out of three of the recruiters / contract houses / direct employers I contacted required the full nine digit SSN before they would proceed with the application

the first time I was asked for the whole SSN, I told them to piss off and hung up...then it happened again and again

{{{Salty}}}

I arrived home last night.

Every day was the best. Hiking the coastal path. Singing sea shanties in the meadow above Kynance Cove. Putting my feet in the water and collecting interesting rocks at Cadgwith beach. Kayaking at Coverack. The sweet poem the writing group wrote about me on the day I left (I came back early for work stuff), and it wasn't even a limerick.

Most of all it was experiencing all of this with my brother and seeing him in his element, teaching about the Inklings.

Val is Delilah's brother. On Thursday afternoon, I saw that Val or Dan, who share a pen, was bleeding. I determined it was Val and took him in to the vet. They took X-rays and, since he had a fever, prescribed antibiotics.

The vet sent the X-rays to a radiologist, who diagnosed him with pneumonia. So he's getting Clavamox twice a day. But he's still having these incidents of coughing up blood. So I'll have to keep him quiet and give him medicine to see if we turn this. Yesterday I was optimistic. Today, less so.

I used to be a huge fan of inheritance and family name, afterall it is in almost all non Western cultures dating back to expulsion from the Garden a holy and sacred thing.

But what I have learned is that most people who inherit a property are no where near a good tenant/owner as the people who chose that site and arranged their lives in order to acquire, live and maintain the property.

Our exclusive community has existed for over a century and it is abundantly clear who are inheritors and who is first generation (moved in during the past 0-40 years).

An Intel 13th or 14th generation CPU (I'm looking at this solution for my desktop replacement) allow you to avoid having to deal with Co-Pilot/Recall. On the other hand, the improved battery life from the Snapdragons makes that solution extremely interesting with the one caution is if you have specific heavy lifting applications, say AutoCAD, that may pose some challenges when it comes to drivers or performance. As for the Recall issue, it can be turned off.

Some (ungrateful) fans have said that Blish did a terrible job with the adaptations. But you have to remember, *he'd never seen an episode at that time* -- he lived in England -- and was working from the scripts alone, sometimes early drafts of the first-year shows, when the characters and background were still in flux. He made Kirk, his viewpoint character, an accessible and understandable fellow.

"Feeling like a man caught in a long fall of dominoes, Kirk jerked his eyes toward Spock." And in his original novel, "Kirk tried to imagine an n-dimensional space, and was not surprised to fail."

I use Zerowater, similar concept (eg excellent filter short of osmosis) , and no descaling required for almost 2 years now.

We are on our second coffee maker, which is probably about 20 years old. Never descaled it. Needs replacing now as it has a leak. Cuisinart 12 cup. My coffee mug is a 2-cupper so 6-mugs but now I only get 5.

Prior to World War II, Argentina was one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Then Peron climbed to power and the country went to hell. It has never recovered and it may never. Too much smoosh handed out to too many people has created a constituency against reform.

Many people say this about Portuguese. It's much more "sing-song" than Spanish.

However Spanish is more intelligible for an Italian than Portuguese. We had two Portuguese-speaking countries as neighbors, Moçambique and Angola, so heard a lot of it.

173 The James Blish novelizations? (They weren't novels -- except for his original, Spock Must Die! -- but collections of short stories. I guess "adaptations" is a better word.) I read those before I actually saw some of the episodes, the early ones I'd missed in first run. Blish did a good job with those scripts.

I have the two-volume collection of those. Yep. They are more akin to short stories than novelizations...Most TV episodes aren't long enough to justify a full novel-length treatment in written format...

175 Six channels in NYC: NBC4, CBS2, ABC7, WPIX11 Yankees, WOR9 Mets, WNET13 and that was more than enough crap for the idiot box.
Once Rush died, I have no interest in radio except for WFAN which has become tedious garbage.

Actually, CBS 2, NBC 3, WNEW 5, WABC 7, WOR 9, WPIX 11, and WNET 13 (PBS). 13 was a commercial station when I was growing up in the 50's. We could receive channels 3, 6 and 10 from Philly as well. I retired in 2019 after 35 years of working as a broadcast engineer for one of the NY stations. It stopped being fun.

185 Don’t sleep on that Affinity Suite. Affinity Designer is easily the best vector graphics program I’ve ever used. Very intuitive in a way that Adobe Illustrator isn’t. And Affinity Photo is a pretty decent Photoshop replacement if you need an image editor for light use once in an while and don’t want to pay Adobe’s subscription fees. I have the Mac versions of these and they’re my go-to programs for these tasks.
