The Weekend Hobby Thread (6/8/24) Presented By - TRex

20060308-swiss-army-knife-officers-knife-2048x1975.jpg

Welcome hobbyists. Do not adjust your interweb. This thread is going to have an edge. A spin of the Ace of Spades “wheel of hobbies” has come up with knives.

TRex is not wise in the ways of collecting or making knives, but the horde has shown in various posts and threads that there is deep and wide interest.

Do you collect knives? Did you have a favorite every day carry? Do you have a favorite that was lost seized at airport security? Have older knives been passed down through your family? Have you forged your own knives? Do you use knives for carving wood or turkey? How do you sharpen your tools?

As usual, keep this thread limited to hobbies. Politics and current events can wait for other threads. You get the point. Behave or I will summon Bluebell and her shiv.

How else could we possibly start?

Swiss Army Knife history – ln the 1880s, the Swiss Army bought folding pocket knives for the soldiers. This knife was used to open canned food and for rifle maintenance, which required a screwdriver for assembly and disassembly. No Swiss company had the production capacity, so the initial order for 15,000 knives was given to a German manufacturer.

In 1891, Karl Elsener began to make folding knives in Switzerland. He began to complete with the German company but lost money as the Germans could make knives at a lower cost. In 1896, he developed an improved knife with tools attached on both sides of the handle using a single spring mechanism. It saved him from bankruptcy.

His knife was a called the “Schweizer Offiziers- und Sportmesser” or, in English, the "Swiss officers and sports knife." The company was renamed Victorinox – combining the name of his deceased mother (Victoria), with the French word for stainless steel (acier inoxydable).

The term "Swiss Army knife" was used by American soldiers after World War II because they could not pronounce the name in German language.
Victorinox and Wenger were the two main Swiss producers of “Swiss army” knives until Wenger sales suffered in post-Sept 11 security changes. Victorinox acquired Wenger in 2005.

Survival knives made and used in the Rambo movies were so popular that they were almost a character themselves. There was no knife in the original “First Blood” novel, but Stallone wanted one.
How were the knives for each movie made?

People collect Rambo knives?
Both stories are from 2017, so values might be out of date.

Two cities on opposite side of the globe are each known as the “City of Blades” because of their long history of manufacturing knives, swords, and other sharp things.

The German version is Solingen , located just north of Cologne. It is the home of firms such as WKC, DOVO, Wüsthof, Zwilling J. A. Henckels, Böker, Güde, Hubertus, Diefenthal, Puma, Clauberg/Klauberg, Eickhorn, Linder, Carl Schmidt Sohn, Dreiturm, Herder, Martor Safety Knives, Wolfertz and others. The original contract from Switzerland to manufacture multi-purpose knives went to a company located in Solingen (Wester & Co.).

The Japanese version is the city of Seki in the Gifu prefecture. Its manufacturing history stretches back over 800 years. The town is cradled by two rivers. The clean water, good river clay used in the quenching process, abundant coal, and strategic location helped establish Seki as a steel forging powerhouse.

On December 9, 1942, after the start of World War II, KA-BAR submitted a knife to the United States Marine Corps in hopes that it would become a general issue to that branch of the military. The USMC KA-BAR was adopted by the Marines as well as the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Underwater Demolition Teams.

2 Just got a CRKT folder. A bit smaller than the monster pic on Amazon's page, but damned sharp. I'm not going to build a collection but I can see the path down there.

3 I have many, many, many knives.
The ones I carry and use the most are made by:
Victorinox
Cold Steel (their folders are sturdy AF)
Spyderco
Emerson.

Best knife? Spyderco Delica. I have 4.

4 Was doing my hobby of repairing my truck rust spots, grinding them out and filling with Bondo.
But also finally simplify my miniatures game board, originally had multiple boards biscuit together but now have just 3 x 3,/4 boards to come out 6 feet 7 by 11 feet 7.
Just have to paint the newest board

5 I’ve posted before I collected pocket knives and more specifically mostly trappers . Gave it up about 20 years ago and my collection is just sitting in my closet collecting dust. I’ll probably take it out soon, reminisce and then see if I can sell it .

Most prolific.

I've purchased a couple over the years that are "collectable" but not "valuable."

The "C. Platts & Sons" piece is a large version of the venerable "Autumn Bone" Case version. Like a 8" version. Very nice. But not a daily cutter.

36 Good folding knives for EDC are cheap enough I don't bother sharpening them, just buy another every few years. I prefer the tanto blade with half serrations at base. Amazon always has what I want at a fair price. I have forgotten I always have one on me and have given TSA and the courthouse deputies quite a few. for $10 to $15 dollars it doesn't seem worth the walk back to the parking garage, especially if I'm on a tight schedule

38 Tommy McKissack of Sonora, TX, a (former) member of the Knifemaker's Guild. My former Brother in Law.

I've got three of his knives. Two, are ivory handled folders.

The other is his blade No.49. True, 440c Stainless, simple brass hilt and bolsters, sanded elkhorn handle. Which never, ever gets "slippery", no matter how elbow deep in the gut pile you might be. Razor sharp, and stays that way.

That's the One Knife, for me.

If you ever see a McKissack knife for sale on *any* table, buy it.

47 Not a knife fan here. But I keep what I got because they work OK.

Still have Gerber Gator lockblade, Leatherman Multitool, and small n-name stilleto that I got in army thirty years ago. Leatherman has at least a hundred thousand miles on it and has been around the world a few times... well, half-way and back a few times.

Same set of Henkels kitchen knives for about 25 years.

Last time I bought a knife is was an insulation knife (used to cut board insulation) that I got about 5 years ago to help me rebuild the ducts in my house.

Like many others I regard them as simple tools.
TEOTWAWKI - I keep the multitool and insulation knife (because in a pinch it would make a good fighting knife).

50 I use two carry knives. First is a Zero Tolerance 0350, the model Gibbs carried on NCIS. It opens easily in an instant one-handed, a surprisingly handy feature, locks up tight and can be closed with one hand. It came shaving sharp, keeps its edge with stropping. It's not light weight and I use the pocket clip for carry. It gets more use opening boxes and in the garden but it could be a fighting knife if required. It's sturdy enough. Fortunately, that hasn't been put to the test.

The other EDC is a Swiss Army Knife, the Explorer model. It has the little magnifier feature and three screw drivers along with the scissors, blades, etc. I have a bunch of different SAK models from tiny to the Champion with a gazillion features. It's fun but too big for EDC.

Japanese nail clippers are the absolute best.

Clean cuts and they never seem to go dull.

I came across them at a kitchen knife store in Tokyo Skytree. Loved the stupid thing so much, I made sure to give them as Christmas presents.

Great kitchen knives too.

Though overall, the knives made by Wusthof seem to fit my hand better, so that's what I mainly use.

82 I have two knives I carry with me, though not in my pockets. One is the one-hand-open CRKT M16 w/ partly-serrated blade. I keep it in my lunch bucket, and yeah, it gets used to open boxes more than anything else. The other, tucked away in a pocket of my leather saddle/shoulder bag, is a 2-blade Browning, a 50th-anniversary Buckmark 310.

Oh, and I have a bone-handled folding knife I keep in the took kit in the car. Haven't used it in a while; it's time to bring it in and oil it, I guess.

83 My knives fall into two categories: kitchen/general purpose and woodcarving. The angle of the edge is the biggest difference.

BTW, in my opinion the Victorinox kitchen knives with fibrox handles are the best value on the market. They take care of 80 percent of my kitchen needs. (The other 20 percent are hand forged carbon steel knives from Townsends. The Townsends knives aren't cheap but they are the kind that can be handed down through several generations.)

I've also got an LST "keychain" knife in the machinist chest. Wee lil 1 in. blade. I don't keep it on my keychain, but it'd be a perfectly adequate box opener, if so!

The lovely and ninja-skilled Mrs naturalfake prefers using ceramic knives when cooking.

They stay sharper longer than steel blades but you have to be more careful with them or the edges will chip.

Also, they won't have any chemical reaction with your food as some folk believe steel knives will.

Son't buy a cheap one. Buy a good one like maybe a Kyocera knife.

114 The best knife sharpening 'devices' I've found are DMT Dia-sharp diamond infused steel slabs, 8" x 3", in three grits. They clean up with water and work perfectly after twenty years of use. Del Stubbs of Pinewood Forge sells and uses them himself.

I keep a good sharpening steel on the wall for kitchen knives that I use after every use. Ten strokes on each side is enough to maintain the edge. I have a Beavercraft wooden paddle strop for the woodcarving knives. So I rarely need to use any stones once I get the edge I want.

Jap knives are the best. I have a large assortment of Tosagata laminated knives. Not super expensive for Japanese knives, but they really hold and edge. I seldom use coarser than 600 grit for resharpening & I work through the grits up to a 14K polishing stone. The hardness of the steel really responds to a very fine grit & the edge stays super sharp. Sounds crazy, but food cut with a super sharp knife looks & tastes better.

Both from the Rambo knife craze of the 80's.
Neither available anymore.
One thing I have learned is never pass up an oportunity to buy any knife you are compelled too.
I owned the Mark 2 before the Army and they sold it for $35.00 at the PX. I should have bought all of them as they go for $300 to $1500 now. Buckmasters are simply unicorns these days. I've had 3. Lost two in a burglery in 1993.

168 41 (Caution: radio nerd talk follows.). I made attempt #2 at a SOTA activation this morning. I got two contacts (including a summit to summit), but needed two more. Couldn't get the antenna up very high, and I could barely get a match on 20m. Oh well, two contacts is two contacts, and the hike was nice to boot. Got ribs in the smoker and will mix up a margarita in the near future. 73.

172 I have two Bokers. The first was some giy's beloved knife. The tree medallion had been pried out so he made a wooden replacement for the side piece. The big blade broke, so he ground down what was left. And he engraved his name on it. Figure he died and that's how it wound up in the second hand shop. But I don't think it likes being owned by a woman. The other one does not have a story but is my everyday carry.

I use those small Swiss Army knives. I like the scissors for cutting yarn on projects. Jake has furry feet and sometimes gets mud that hardens between his toes. Those scissors do a good job of cutting it out.

I like knifes and try to actually use them. But sometimes I buy one I find interesting

181 167 ... "Are woodworking planes considered a sort of knife?"

Hi Ben Had,

My first thought was: it depends on what you're cutting up. (Sometimes my smartass nature comes out.) Seriously, I think of a knife as having bevels on each side of the blade. A plane is basically a chisel (one side beveled, one side flat) in a holder. Just my guess.

Posted by: JTB at June 08, 2024 07:20 PM (zudum)

182 JTB. My most used knife is a hoof knife used for paring out dead sole. It is only beveled on one side.

190 "laminated" - never heard of this before, but saw it mentioned during prep for the thread content. Guess it is a thing.

Posted by: TRex

You may know about the Samurai sword from Weasel, where there are layers of hard & soft steel folded over & over. The hard steel is for the edge which stays very sharp, but is brittle. The soft steel is there to keep the blade from breaking. In a laminated knife, hard steel in the middle is laminated to softer steel on the sides. Not as difficult to make as the folded steel knives, but work great.

There is something so cool about getting together which is why I try so hard to convince people to come to one of the MoMe's. I gave up trying to figure out why it's so much fun and just accept each one as the blessing it is. I have made so many great friends over the years through my association with the blog and encourage anyone interested in organizing a MoMe to contact either bluebell or me for some tips for how to host one where you live. It can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be, and is very much worth any effort you make in arranging things!
