Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ satellites out there!
I slept all the way to the alarm, canyabelieveit. It woke me from a dream about waiting for someone (prob. Miss Linda) as she prowled a NYC consignment store. I was outside, leaning against the wall under the awning. It was a dreary rainy day, but still crowded. Richard Boone, wearing a topcoat and no hat, was standing nearby looking out at the street. I was swatting at one of those big mosquito things, you know, the ones you *shouldn't* kill because they eat the small biting skeeters, when the alarm went off. That the D-Day invasion was a massive undertaking should be known. Originally was to go June 5th but a 2 day weather
break the Allies knew but Germans didn't made the surprise. But even that, the Germans through a comedy of errors still hardly started a counter defense for a day and it was too late. Posted by: Skip at June 06, 2024 04:46 AM (fwDg9) 11
I looked up "sundowner" the other day after encountering it in an article on The President. And LOL three VASTLY different meanings:
1 informal, mainly British English: an alcoholic drink taken at sunset. 2 a person with dementia who becomes increasingly irritable or difficult as the day progresses. 3 Australian and New Zealand English informal, dated: a person arriving at a sheep station in the evening under the pretense of seeking work, so as to obtain food and shelter. Why would anyone need a toothbrush that talks to you?
This reminds me of the Beany and Cecil toys, and others, where you pulled a cord and a recording would speak one of five or six sentences at random. Eventually the device stopped working; and even back then, nobody repaired them. The plush toys were still attractive; my mother kept my Cecil until the end of her life (and I wish I'd kept it). But the voice thing was gone. Does an Oral-B toothbrush still work as a toothbrush without the Alexa frills? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 06, 2024 04:50 AM (omVj0) 14

Over the past three and a half years, our domestic production would have been almost 2.5 billion barrels higher if Biden and radical environmental activists had simply left the industry alone.
At the average world price of $75 a barrel, these attacks on fossil fuels have meant a $150 billion loss of domestic output. Posted by: rhennigantx at June 06, 2024 05:41 AM (ENQN6) 27

Posted by: Tuna at June 06, 2024 *** Despite being one of the *ugliest* actors in TV/movie history, at least compared to people like Cary Grant and Robert Vaughn, he has always impressed me in anything he did: Paladin the hero, villains in Big Jake and Hombre, etc. Had Lawrence Block been writing the NYC-set Matt Scudder stories in the late Fifties or early Sixties, Boone would not have been a bad choice to play Scudder the recovering alcoholic/investigator in a film. Maybe that's what I was thinking, since in the dream I was aware that I was in New York City. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 06, 2024 05:51 AM (omVj0) 35

I spent the last few days in downtown Sacramento for the first time in 3 years, at a large conference. I and many other attendees were absolutely shocked to find the capital area completely decrepit and overrun with hostile, aggressive, and drugged out hobos. Most commercial locations were vacant. It was worse than the Tenderloin. Absolutely shocking. I've been to many hellholes and this was among the worst I have ever seen.

On Youtube can see a few specials on the 80th D-Day.
One involved paratroopers re-enacting the landing at one of the drop zones. And like 80 years ago things didn't go as planned. The Canadian CC-130 actually didn't fly. The RAF, Belgium had their A.400s and the USAF had a C-130. Because of the variable wind the first stick of Americans ended up scattered and almost landing amidst the viewing stands. And this was all in daylight. Now imagine this happening at night knowing Germans waited below.
