Editorial comment: In the Eisenhower letter, united nations is capitalized. The formation of the UN was at least a year in the future, so I think Ike musta meant those nations united against Germany. IMHO.

Tomorrow he head out for the annual family gathering. Grandbabies are going to be there, then they are going to come for a visit at our house. We have spent the last few days rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic - actually had to clean all of the stuff off of the dining room table 🤣🤣🤣 We're going to take them to the zoo while they are here, maybe go to the local pool, maybe visit our friends who have llamas. We drug out all of the old toys that have been stored around here. Hey Theresa - I went to the new Forest Park pool with the grandkids at its grand reopening, they did a good job! Different than before but still good. Grandson misses the diving board but nobody does diving boards anymore. Inexpensive fun for the kids.

Another item in his portfolio, was managing the massive egos of most all of the Lesser Generals under his Supreme Command. Turns out, he was great at this, too. Even with the more difficult stuff, like relegating Patton to command the Phantom Army in NorthEast England, to spoof the NotSees into staging hard up around Calais. I think he was a very competent leader, for all the reasons you note, and his warning about the "military-industrial complex" rings more true with every passing year. But as a spokesman for the moderate wing of the GOP, one clearly opposed to the hard-core conservatives led by Nixon, a lot of the future intra-party conflict does (in my opinion) have to be laid at his feet. Remember that story about the black guy who called into a zoom hearing with a judge about his suspended license? And the judge ordered him to go to jail, because he was driving when he called in?
It was Fake News. The man's license had only been suspended due to a clerical error, which he was attempting to get resolved at the hearing. The judge didn't listen to his explanation -- he just ordered him to jail. It turns out that this being fake news is, itself, fake news. The judge did some research and found that the guy never had a driver's license. There's a bonus bench warrant for his arrest stemming from a previous charge of driving without a license from years ago. His defense attorney found out about this from the judge himself whilst in court. I don't think it was any accident that Ike did Great Britain dirty in the Suez.
Because I think that a great deal of Ike's "appreciation" of British "leadership" was formed by having to put up with the likes of General Montgomery. And the Brits "Bomber Mafia" couldn't have been cake to work with, either. They fought against the Eighth Air Force daylight mass raids, well into the war. IRRC, Ike stepped in to back Hap Arnold in that, to settle the issue. I'm not saying the Brits "deserved" the disrespect at Suez. I think it was wrong. I watched a show the other day that briefly showed the terrain at Pointe du Hoc. Pretty steep casualties in the process and aftermath. I do wonder whether America is up to that again. Zappa was prolific, yes, but I find a lot of his music unlistenable. He defies you to listen to his music, especially his guitar solos, which, while virtuostic, were designed specifically to sound like something you wouldn't want to listen to, unless you were a fellow autist. I say this as a Zappa fan. I like about a tenth of his works. The rest, wow.

I was in the business of it. That was my livelihood. Today my income is all residuals from my works, and a pension. It's pretty good, better than nothing. Once in that category, and type the word "tube" into the Search field, and hit enter. You'll be amazed at all the new-production, tube driven stereo amplifiers offered for sale. Some, are affordable. More though, are OMG$pensive! If you ever get to listen to one at a high end stereo store, you'll know why they're popular, still. Don't want one though. Having to stock an inventory of spare tubes and dealing with all that goes with tube technology, ain't my idea of a good time. But damn. Polynikes, if you want a show that's in the same vein as Fake or Fortune but with less drama, check out The Art Detectives (aka Britain's Lost Masterpieces), which is currently on Tubi. Bendor Grosvenor left Fake or Fortune to do The Art Detectives and took some heat for it, but the show is focused more on restoring previously unattributed or misattributed works in public collections and pinning down a possible attribution. There's only one episode I can think of where the expert refused to reconsider the evidence after Bendor and his team finished the restoration. Lots of cool art history and some really astonishing transformations.

Re: D-Day: History Hit has been posting some good documentaries on YouTube this week: one filmed at the Royal Armories testing weapons the US forces used on D-Day, one compilation of videos from 2021 about an Operation Nightingale archaeological dig at the site where Easy Company was stationed before D-Day, and one called "Could You Survive as a Soldier on D-Day?" that's more of an overview of the history of the invasion--mainly from a British viewpoint, as one might expect, but still excellent and respectful. (The Royal Armories has its own video about D-Day weapons that was just posted to YouTube today, but I haven't watched it yet.) Time Team also joined that Operation Nightingale dig in 2022 and posted a special, "Digging the Band of Brothers," last summer on the Time Team Official YouTube channel; that's also well worth a watch, although there is some overlap in the artifacts shown.
