I found the following story fascinating. 'Hour by hour, how D-Day unfolded...'
Eighty years ago, almost 160,000 British, US and Canadian forces embarked on the largest amphibious invasion in history. On June 6, Allied troops crossed the English Channel by boat, aircraft and glider to attack and secure beaches in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord, with the end goal of liberating Nazi-occupied Europe and defeating Adolf Hitler’s German regime. Supreme Commander General Dwight D Eisenhower, in charge of the extraordinary offensive, looked at the cards he had been dealt and decided to go all in. What happened next has gone down in history as D-Day... Thousands of ships carrying brave men, as well as tanks and other equipment needed to defeat Hitler’s forces, landed at five designated sites along the coast of Normandy - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Tomorrow he head out for the annual family gathering. Grandbabies are going to be there, then they are going to come for a visit at our house. We have spent the last few days rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic - actually had to clean all of the stuff off of the dining room table 🤣🤣🤣
We're going to take them to the zoo while they are here, maybe go to the local pool, maybe visit our friends who have llamas. We drug out all of the old toys that have been stored around here. We are planning on being super grandparents for about a week 😊

I don't consider Eisenhower a very inspiring figure on a personal level. Decent man, but I have quibbles with his presidency as well as his willingness to play footsies with the Soviets near the end of the war. But in his mastery of logistics and the other managerial tasks winning a modern war required, he was second to none. I don't think anyone could have done as well.

I don't *hate* Eisenhower, I want to stress. I think he was a very competent leader, for all the reasons you note, and his warning about the "military-industrial complex" rings more true with every passing year.
But as a spokesman for the moderate wing of the GOP, one clearly opposed to the hard-core conservatives led by Nixon, a lot of the future intra-party conflict does (in my opinion) have to be laid at his feet. And as Tom Servo notes, his handling of the Suez Crisis was a serious blunder.

It was Fake News. The man's license had only been suspended due to a clerical error, which he was attempting to get resolved at the hearing. The judge didn't listen to his explanation -- he just ordered him to jail.
It turns out that this being fake news is, itself, fake news. The judge did some research and found that the guy never had a driver's license. There's a bonus bench warrant for his arrest stemming from a previous charge of driving without a license from years ago. His defense attorney found out about this from the judge himself whilst in court.

That's true, and there's a puzzle there. I cannot think of a comparably inept ruling class in history. Many like to cite the French under Louis XVI. But that's not true. The fact is that in our Revolution their navy had one of its best wars vs the Brits, of the century leading up to Waterloo. The army was at least competent. They were not the dithering cowards we are ruled by. They were miles better than our leaders.
Also, I know many will hate to hear this, but it was our real meritocracy which led to it. We were arrogant, 1950-2000, and thought we'd broken the code, and could choose the best ruling class. We couldn't. Our notion of what merit entailed was faulty.

Because I think that a great deal of Ike's "appreciation" of British "leadership" was formed by having to put up with the likes of General Montgomery.
And the Brits "Bomber Mafia" couldn't have been cake to work with, either. They fought against the Eighth Air Force daylight mass raids, well into the war. IRRC, Ike stepped in to back Hap Arnold in that, to settle the issue.
I'm not saying the Brits "deserved" the disrespect at Suez. I think it was wrong. But I do think they did damn little to make a winning impression on Ike, a decade earlier.

We discussed it a couple of days ago, but Windows hilariously has a "reduce your carbon footprint" option where you can briefly disable all of the telemetry and data collection phoning-home.
When testing it my battery went from two hours to over five hours estimated time remaining. Because all of the background programs were halted.
It sure does seem like the easiest way to stop using so much energy would be on the MS end by stopping that stuff on a few billion computers, but I'm no Global Warming Sciencetist.

If you're referring to the North Hollywood bank robbery back in the 90's (?) - I remember watching it live on tv and seeing the one robber bleeding out on the street and wondering why the cops were just milling about. I have no sympathy for the robbers but still it seemed a little inhuman even to me....

Maybe. They might not have had electronic or "software" limiters then, but the physical constraints were there. You just cannot get that much sound pressure out of a telephone earpiece. It's never going to make the volume of even a 4" speaker in a 5 tube radio.

Thanks but, honestly, it's one of those things that goes with the territory of congestive heart failure. The good news is my device overrode an impending fibrillation without shocking me. When these things happen, I just take it easy as possible and take baby aspirin twice a day instead of just once for maybe a week. I did walk the couple of blocks to and from a grocery store this morning; light shop, mostly milk but I have a lightweight cart.
Life doesn't stop, it just slows down some every so often.

To elaborate a little - I came to Calif in 1980 as a newly-minted engineer. Married a native-born local girl, we raised two sons here, all her family is here, I have just about none of my own, so unless we all go, I don't think any of us will go. That could change after the last of the parents goes - they're all in their 90's now.

Tubes last a long, long time, Jim. You probably could not stand to listen to a tube amp run hard enough to burn out the output tubes. Having said that, a full set of spare tubes should not cost more than a hundred-odd dollars, and would be cheap insurance.
