Top Story

In addition to the Zen 5 desktop lineup, AMD has announced its first Zen 5 laptop CPUs, codenamed Strix Point. (Tom's Hardware)

These are mainstream chips with integrated graphics.

Compared to the previous generation, the CPU cores increase from 8 to 12, and the graphics cores from 12 to 16.

Eight of the twelve CPU cores are the smaller, slower, Zen 5c, so the 12 core model is probably equivalent to a 10 core Zen 5 CPU - or as fast as a 12 core Zen 4.

The model I'm really waiting for is Strix Point Halo, with more than 16 CPU cores - we don't know exactly how many - and 40 graphics cores. That hasn't been announced yet.
Asus has announced several laptops based on the new AMD chips. (Liliputing)

None of them have the Four Essential Keys.

No release dates yet but this particular model is listed for pre-order at Best Buy for $1399.

Intel also announced new laptop chips. (AnandTech)

Lunar Lake is due out by September, aimed at mainstream laptops. Intel says that the new Performance cores offer 16% better IPC than the previous generation - exactly the same increase as AMD claims for Zen 5.

Intel also claims that the Efficiency cores can provide 70% better single-threaded performance and 3x better multi-threaded performance than the previous E-cores in Meteor Lake.

If that's accurate, it's a huge improvement, taking the E-cores (which were adequate but not good) to a level where they are directly comparable to Zen 5c.

Lunar Lake will be followed up by Arrow Lake before the end of the year, by while Arrow Lake will have the new Performance cores, it might still have the older, slower Efficiency cores.

So go for Lunar Lake? Not so fast. Lunar Lake will only be available with memory soldered directly onto the CPU, a maximum of 32GB.

I had a really moment (PG rating) when I read that. I can't wait to see what Intel comes up with for their desktop silicon. I was going to buy a 13th gen system from Dell but they ran out of 750w systems by the time I got my act together. Now that I see where Intel heading I am going to pick up a 14th gen system; being able to expand the memory is kind a desktop prerequisite feature. Plus I don't have to deal with the whole Recall fiasco which will be in the next generation of silicon.

And AMD's naming conventions, geezh...

Nope. x86 and ARM assembly are different. One difference is Apple includes an instruction to drain your bank account while Intel has an instruction to release the same CPU each year with a new model number. Intel borrowed this innovation from 1980s GM.

Programmers use these keys all the time to quickly move around the code being written. The essential part is they are full size keys and laid out in such a manner that they can be quickly be accessed without looking. Additionally the arrow keys should be full size. This is not a trivial issue if you are a programmer.

73 Just tried somethin g new in my shave routine: Cella brushless shave cream. (Yes, I know, just about any cream can be used without a brush.) I bought it to bring along on my road trip. It is slick, and works okay . . . but it is transparent, and so it's hard to tell what you've actually shaved and what you haven't when you're used to a white cream or soap.

I may use it as a pre-shave here at home, and just toss a soap stick and brush in my shave kit for traveling. I can always lather up the soap in my hand before applying it to the face.

I'm sick of the phrase "jailing political opponents". That isn't actually a bad thing. Are they guilty of something deserving jail? Can you prove it in a real prosecution that follows the same rules of prosecution everyone else must follow? Well then throw them in jail, dammit! The problem is not jailing political opponents. The problem is jailing the innocent and acquitting the guilty. Discarding your own rule set because something is deemed too important. And it doesn't matter if the object is a president or a hobo, those are civilization killers in their own right. It's always a "political" decision when you go down that path. Doing it against presidential candidates just makes it more visible.

85 I have re-used a windows OS drive on a different laptop before. There is a way to do it. But it's absurdly complicated as far as i recall, and also nerve wracking, although i don't remember any details about the process.

I just know i needed a usb to sata adapter and some goofy software that i think came from Microsoft off a link buried deep in their knowledge base forum thingy.

127 Programmers use these keys all the time to quickly move around the code being written. The essential part is they are full size keys and laid out in such a manner that they can be quickly be accessed without looking. Additionally the arrow keys should be full size. This is not a trivial issue if you are a programmer.
