FUNdamentals Are "you people" practicing your fundamentals? In addition to correct sock tension, the watch a shooter is wearing is an important element of proper marksmanship. Revolver Carry? Far too many people overlook the revolver as a carry option. Katana Korner ![]() I've had a good chance to study your blade. This is an absolutely authentic antique Japanese blade. It probably dates from the mid-1600's. It looks like it is from Mino province, possibly from the town of Seki which was a major sword production center for centuries. The blade is a traditional forging and it looks like it has a complete hamon (temper line) and boshi (temper line around the point), so it should be completely restorable. There are a few small defects that will not be completely removable such as a small open weld spot, about 1/8" in size, about 1" up from the tang on one side and a visible black weld line about 3/8" long about 4" up from the tang on the other side. These may be improved significantly by polishing, but probably can not be completely removed. This is common and to be expected in an authentic hand forged blade of this age. I should be able to start on your blade next week. It will probably be about 3 more weeks after that to get it finished. So now I wait, and to say I am excited to see the finished product is something of an understatement. Again, the polishing restoration is done completely by hand which is why it takes time. Frankly I am a little amazed someone has the capacity and dedication to work on something like this for so long, but again, this is for a museum quality restoration. After lengthy conversations with the togishi we agreed this is the proper way to treat this antique item of art. I have asked for some photos of the process to share here, but evidently they will likely not show much and was cautioned as follows to manage my expectations: I will try to make some in progress photos but they are generally not too interesting. Went shooting with my family today. Finally got to try out my Ruger 77/357 that I bought in March 2020 just before demand started going up. Wonderful to shoot. I mostly put .38 Special through it today.
Would love to have an extended capacity magazine for it. A group called IQ Munitions used to make one thats been well reviewed, but it hasnt been in stock for a couple of years now. Also put a few rounds through my 30-30 revolver that some TxMoMe folks have tried. Always a fun gun. First time my second youngest brother has shot it. He was sure it was going to kick hard. That was smooth. It doesnt kick at all! Which is a bit of an overstatement the other way but it is smooth firing. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at June 02, 2024 06:22 PM (olroh) 36

The restored 1911 reminds me of my first Battery Commander. He told me he was on a field exercise at Ft Bragg (mid-1960's) when they were taking a break and he saw this moldy green thing hanging from a tree branch. Turned out to be a pistol belt with a holster with an old 1911 in .38. They figured out it had probably been hanging there for a couple decades. The Army let him keep it and he completely restored it.

Ah yes, my journey with fundamentals continues...and is finally paying off. Being a left handed shooter, I was told the shots that went down and to the right were due to anticipating the recoil....then I was told it was dominant hand pressure...well, I can tell you it was neither. I, who knows nothing, didn't believe I had any issue with my trigger control. The class last week included an exercise on trigger - whether or not you wanted it. Well, seems I learned a thing or two. Friday I focused on that aspect and saw improvement. Today it paid dividends. I was shooting so accurately that I got into a zone and nailed the center of the target repeatedly. I try not to bring politics into the thread but this is sorta related. After the Trump verdict this week I suspect a lot of people quickly thought about their ammo and reloading supplies. Not for defense or anything, just from a concern about access to supplies being narrowed by the lefties.

I have a policy with estate sales and pawn shops. I buy every sword I see. Even the cheap crap from vendors at fairs and the like.
Pushing probably 15 good swords or daggers. The 4 or 5 I have found really worth a shit well make up for the ones I destroy and throw away. Most are scrap steel with 6 inch long 1/4-20 bolts welded to the "sword" to keep the pommel and tang on. Break first time you actually hit something with them. By design I believe. I also buy all BB guns and old militaria. Posted by: Reforger at June 02, 2024 06:52 PM (xcIvR) 92
I watched a number of videos on Japanese sword making recently, and evidently very rare examples turn up from time to time. Often, they were hidden by the families who owned them, then lost or forgotten for hundreds of years.

I will need to have a new mounting made which is a process all by itself! They are custom made to the shape of the blade and are virtually airtight. Also, there is a whole oiling process using special oil from Japan.
Posted by: Weasel at June 02, 2024 06:19 PM Make sure you order the soft Hogue grips to go over your new handle. They really soften the felt impact to your hands when the blade strikes an opponent with decent armor! Posted by: Pillage Idiot at June 02, 2024 06:52 PM (HlyYF) 94
It's a special thing to completely take apart something and put it back together. I wish I had the tools. But I don't, so field stripping is the best I can do.
Posted by: nurse ratched at June 02, 2024 06:35 PM (XA4WA) The 1911 has all the tools you need to detail strip it built in. You can use the firing pin to knock out the mainspring housing retainer pin, which lets you get to the flat sear spring. The sear spring has a little nub on it that fits in the magazine catch retainer's slot. Everything else comes out with your fingers. Of course, just because you can do something, that doesn't mean you should. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 02, 2024 06:52 PM (JGpCh) 95

Range Report
Smaller group than usual, only 4 of us. We took two lanes and did the one hole drill to start. Iris and I started with 22s. It was okay. Iris shot better than I but I did okay but at 7 and 10 yeards could not really see the rounds hitting the target. Moved to 9mm for the same exercise. Well, having the Holosun green dot sure made a difference and I could see the big holes in the paper. Then we shot a zombie target. The target starts way back and comes towards you while you shoot until it's almost in your face. Pulled out the Kimber for that and was surprised to find that I preferred shooting the Glock. So, green dot beats red dot. Looking forward to seeing everyone who makes the trip to NoVa. I am getting better at deer hunting set ups on my farm and have been drawing them in to closer and closer ranges every year. Probably about time for me to move up to bow hunting. It would probably be a good idea to add a little archery range beside the pistol range I am working on! (Good suggestions from the Horde, as usual.) Youngest daughter weighs 103# at 18 y.o. So, range report: Hit the range for a 1,000 yard and 500 yard steel comp with the rifle. Had the 1,000 yard target been 12 inches rather than 10, I'd probably have done well. 1 for 10 was disappointing, to say the least. It didn't take me long to get the elevation dialed in but the wind just decided to make me look bad, once again. Still did better than my competitor. He went zero for 10.
So, moved to the 500 yard, 10, 5, 3 and 2" targets. I rung the 10" in pretty short order but the 5" laughed at me. Which was aggravating because last time though I did quite well at this. Oh well, so it goes. On the rifle maintenance front, I finally dialed the trigger pull on the Savage way back. Which means more practice to get used to the lighter pull, Oh darn. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at June 02, 2024 07:15 PM (R/m4+) If you submitted your paperwork after November of last year with digital fingerprints vice paper and ink, I understand that your wait time will be cut a lot (8 months from 12 to 18 months?). I put in my paperwork for an MP5-N last November with paper fingerprint cards, so I'm not expecting anything back for at least six months, if not more. Welp, this week I experienced an issue that in over a half century of shooting 1911s I had never before encountered.
While firing my Colt Combat Commander I had a complete jam, with the slide locked up out of battery and a round stuck about 3/4 of the way into the chamber. I dropped the mag, tried to rack it without success, then happened to notice that the slide stop had worked itself out of the frame by maybe a millimeter, and was hanging up the slide. Figuring that I had maybe not assembled it correctly last time, I cleared the jam, broke down the pistol, and made damn sure it was reassembled correctly. 1/? Three rounds through a new magazine, it jammed again. The slide stop had worked out of the frame again. I tried the whole process one more time, with the same results. GRRR! My first thought was a weak plunger spring, but it seems to be strong, and the plunger moves freely. I'm thinking the slide stop itself may have worn out of spec, so I ordered a new one from Brownells to see if that will resolve the problem. If Whig or any of the other 1911 pistoleros here have any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing them. 2/2 Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at June 02, 2024 07:36 PM (3rnQf) 207

Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at June 02, 2024 07:36 PM (3rnQf) Have you checked the frame beneath the slide stop and the holes for the slide stop? If your theory is correct, shouldn't you see metal debris in the frame or signs of wear on the slide stop holes themselves? Also, wouldn't you also see wear from the recoil spring guide hitting the area of the frame right above the trigger? If this is the case, you might want to have the slide itself looked at. The slide stop notch is a known weak point where cracks can develop as the slide itself begins to fail. Source: "Colt .45 Service Pistols" by Charles W. I do have a range report. I finally got the wife to the range. She wasn't really into it, but she did apply herself to me goals of simply getting her to fire a few rounds downrange safely.
I took the 1911 9mm, the G3c, the Windicator .357, and the Ar-15 5.56. Starting with the AR, then those handguns in order, I introduced the safe operation and handling of the weapons, had her load at least one extra round in the magazine (or load the cylinder), then insert the mag, take it off safe, and shoot. Mission was accomplished with only one oddness. I did NOT talk about sight picture at all - it was merely a familiarization exercise. And somehow she managed to aim the AR such that she was pointing it above the target. The range officer got a little concerned and came over and tried to get her to see a proper sight picture, but without some intervention she kept pointing it high. So we need to debrief that at some point. But I *did* get her to the range and get her to handle the firearms safely. So, mission accomplished. (I also got her to talk to me about where the problem lies in going to the range, and we're working on that.) Posted by: GWB at June 02, 2024 07:57 PM (AWrpC) 260

Ok, here’s something interesting in the dumb shit interesting category: last week I took my 6.5 Creedmoor along to see how it matched with the AR 10.
It didn’t. I could not lock the bolt down at all. Took it home and got out the bore snake. I found a patch of hard carbon right in the donut ring area. All good suggestions, but I can see no signs of wear on the frame or slide stop holes. I did, however, notice some wear on the face of the slide stop (where it contacts the plunger), which is why I suspect the slide stop itself. Any experience with those? The Signature Z rings with the spherical plastic inserts? Absolutely my favorite rings for rimfires. 244 My first thought was a weak plunger spring, but it seems to be strong, and the plunger moves freely. I'm thinking the slide stop itself may have worn out of spec, so I ordered a new one from Brownells to see if that will resolve the problem.
Posted by: That SOB Van Owen ======= If you shoot your 1911 a lot and clean it by field disassembly after you shoot, you can wear the pin of the slide stop enough for it to be relative loose in the frame. You will notice it being looser than normal usually. Usually fitting a new slide stop can fix that. EdL is correct about the slide stop notch being an area for failure. To check, you use a volatile chemical like gasoline, the high grade isopropyl alcohol, or acetone. Any crack will still have a bit a liquid after the rest of the area dries as the liquid penetrates the crack. Posted by: whig at June 02, 2024 08:05 PM (PkS4e) 280

Even though the Ruger American Mark 2 looks mighty fine. Posted by: RI Red ======== No reason not to have a borescope for rifles any longer as the new digital types have made it a LOT cheaper than the former optical types. Very useful for buying used rifles for example or for diagnosing certain problems. The major issue for newbies to borescopes is that even new barrels can look quite bad but shoot just fine after running a box or two of some plain fmj bullets down them. Sometimes, though, you find truly awful workmanship and unfortunately that can be common if you buy enough no name AR barrels. Fine for plinking but not for precision shooting. Found a little artillery (really little) history at the Museum of The Great Lakes, not long ago. I had seen -- and fired off -- reveille cannons to open the range at several old-school matches from the old "Regional" days. I kind of wondered who'd made those heavy, small-gauge muzzle loaders, and why, and it turned out...
They were from the old Lifesaving Service, used to launch a line to a foundering vessel. The laid-line that followed the grapple was a masterpiece of 18th century rope engineering. Hemp was no good, or silk. It was pre-flexed and worked linen fiber. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at June 02, 2024 08:15 PM (zdLoL) 298

Again, great suggestions. The pin of the slide stop doesn't appear to be loose in the frame. I'll use your tip to see if I can spot any cracks in the slide stop notch.
The good news in all of this is that I have become very practiced in clearing a Type 4 jam. I have the cuts on my hands to prove it. Next time I'll wear gloves. :-) Posted by: That SOB Van Owen ----- If your 1911 is of a modern make by Colt or other premium US makers, a crack would be rare due to better steels and better heat treatment. Dunno about Turkish or Philippine Island makes though and I would not be surprised that durability of slide and frame might not be as much as something like a Ruger, Kimber, Colt, or Sig 1911. Use to, dunno about now as Brownells seems to be paring back parts inventory, you used to be able to get oversized parts that could be carefully reduced to fit a worn frame and barrel link. I have a refinished 1939 M1911A1 that clearly shows where the slide (matched to the frame) was heat treated to harden those areas. I think it's a bit difficult to see the heat treated areas with the original finish, but they're very easy to spot after refinishing.

Sutliff Match Pipe Tobacco Evening https://tinyurl.com/2a9y3qsb This is a very pleasant, non-aromatic blend. Someone in the comments described it as having an almost campfire aroma, which isn't far off but seems much more offensive than it is. It's just a hint of it, the type that reminds you of the fun times catching lightning bugs or fishing with friends and not the one where you've spent all day burning dead pine to clean up the lower acreage. I thoroughly enjoyed the initial smoke and look forward to having it again soon. Posted by: Moron Robbie - WHY ARE YOU TRUMP SUPPORTERS SO HAPPY?!!! at June 02, 2024 08:30 PM (sIl7T) 333
This came up years ago in a whole different context. Pretty sure the last (legal) whale-oil product on the market was GM's own brand of limited slip differential lube additive. It had a distinctive odor, and may have been te cause of a lot of unneeded rear-end gear oil changes. So if you ever open up a Twin Traction, that whiff is not spoilage. It's Old Katana.

The best Opening Ceremonies BLAST to be had, is at the annual Boomershoot, long-range reactive target shoot, held in (IIRC) Orofino, Idaho.
The initial "shot" is an Anvil Launch, where they pack enough Boomerite (federally licensed, locally made, better than tannerite, explosive product), in a hole under a 250 lb. anvil, and see how high they can launch it. Every year, it's a new Record and Goal! Then, the Opening Fireball. Think, about 20 lbs. of Boomerite, a couple of Propane cylinders, and a few gallons of gasoline, all nestled snugly together. And then, a shot rings out. And all HELL breaks loose. Think, larger than Apocalypse Now grade explosion and fireball. Targets at Boomershoot, are Chinese takeout containers, packed with Boomerite. Small ones at +/- 400 yards. Large ones at +/- 800 yards. No DOUBT when the shooter hits ! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 02, 2024 08:37 PM (e6UQI) 343

Note that direct impingement guns (i.e. most AR-15s) will push a fair amount of gases back into your face if you put a silencer on it. That's because in order to do its job, the silencer limits how much gas can exit the muzzle. The gas coming back to cycle the weapon has to go somewhere, and the path of least resistance is through the ejection port and into your face. This can be a potential safety issue if you're a lefty because more of your face will be in path of gases coming out of the ejection port. Posted by: Ed L at June 02, 2024 08:42 PM (yRXSd) 355

The worst thing you can do is snatch the trigger and high power scopes can make that irresistible as you see the x wander in and out. I prefer low power scopes or iron sights for that reason. One can be the grayman but it takes a major effort to protect privacy because it means no gun mags, no internet searches, no phone internet searches, (VPN alone doesn't protect you from nation state actors much), and the latest FISA law extension allows the Feds to make anyone including your local cafe owner squeal and turn over logs of customer communications that they have without telling you.

It comes with adblockers and such, but the beauty is that it has a built in screen resolution (768x something?) and other set-in-stone settings that make everyone using the browser look the same. You can't easily create a fingerprint with it, which is what people do when they start modifying their browser to (ahem) "protect their privacy." 387 Didn't get any range time in this weekend but did get 1000 rounds of Winchester 9mm and put some blue loctite on the grip screws on the Springfield Armory SA-35 Browning High Power clone I bought a couple months ago. Shoots great but those grip screws seem to want to work themselves loose so hopefully a little dab of loctite will cure the problem.
Posted by: TheOsprey at June 02, 2024 09:06 PM (QUHlP) Thanks for that tip. I replaced the extractor and spring, safety and linkage on mine. It's slicker than snot. Posted by: Eromero at June 02, 2024 09:12 PM (NxC5+) 396

I'm betting this is in large part what all the AI development is for.
Posted by: Moron Robbie ======= Heh. That is going to be a shitfest to mark my words. LLM models become insane after a couple of iterations with real data and the feds are notoriously incompetent with data technology and that includes even the military. They lose shit all the time because bidders for these projects are lowest cost and the bidding process is very political. AI systems can be useful if you cut down the ambitions to very small niches but determining who would be a threat to the state is quite simply unattainable without a huge number of false positives and false negatives. Essentially a random walk. Used to deal with huge datasets and the larger the dataset, the fewer variables were usable because you started getting random noise when you tried to analyze cause and effect. Essentially datamining starts generating spurious correlations between variables. AI might be something in twenty years or so when LLM models are abandoned but they are in their infancy and oversold right now. Ask Pixy about them if you are around early AM for his thread. AR uppers: Most uppers (including MILSPEC ones) have the ejection port on the right side. Lefties shooting these have more of their face in the path of hot brass and the gases coming out of the ejection port. Thus the need for brass deflectors and eye pro for the gases. There are manufacturers that make lefty friendly uppers out there, but the number of lefty uppers are far, far smaller than the number of righty ones. Magazines: There's no point to CNC-ing an AR magazine when injection molding is around for plastics (i.e. Magpul PMAGs). HK was the last holdout for including steel magazines with its AR copy (MR556A1/HK 416), but even they switched over to Gen 3 PMAGs last year. Posted by: Ed L at June 02, 2024 09:14 PM (yRXSd) 401
Stag Arms sold left-handed ARs but I don't know if it was only the ejection port reversed or if the lower controls were reversed also.
Posted by: Oddbob They did sell ambi controls. There are quite a bit of ambidextrous control replacement parts for the AR that are much more available than left sided ejection upper receiver types. Posted by: whig at June 02, 2024 09:15 PM (PkS4e) 402

Thanks Weasel, appreciate this thread every Sunday. And all the commenters. Was thinking about that AR down the road, but will think twice about a silencer for it. Looking forward to seeing many of you next weekend. Have a great week.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 02, 2024 09:08 PM (o9S4q) Hey AOP I called you last week Saturday when I was at 12 West with Rich and Debbie. Randall Arms once made a mirror image 1911. A TRUE Left-Handed gun. I do not recall if they'd made provision to use conventional 1911 magazines, or had to produce mirror image magazines, as well.
Also of note, Charter Arms made the "Southpaw", five shot, .38 Special revolver. Slightly smaller than a S&W "J" frame equivalent, but also, a true Mirror Image to Charter Arms' conventional "Undercover" snubbie. I was gonna get one for Herself New Dawn, but never could find any Left Handed Ammunition for the dang thing. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 02, 2024 09:24 PM (e6UQI) 411

Since we're talking food...
We're doing a potluck for St John's Natal Day. It's kinda cool to do it that way. I just ordered the locusts and honey. I got some grasshoppers ordered, and some honeycomb. Yes, for real. I figure the kids will be most interested. Posted by: GWB at June 02, 2024 09:30 PM (AWrpC) 417

You for the thread, weasel-san. I will get to the range this weekend, either inside pistols or out in the woods for some rifle action. Should be fun either way! Posted by: nurse ratched at June 02, 2024 09:30 PM (HXGNm) 418

Grateful, just about any modern service rifle other than a bolt action will roughly have the same kind of problem. You can't cheat physics. You'll have to accept the penalties that come with certain capabilities. Posted by: Ed L at June 02, 2024 09:30 PM (yRXSd) 419
