A local Portland alt-weekly had an article about why Portland, one of the most gay-friendly cities on the planet, had no lesbian bars.
The alt-weekly was somewhat defensive about the fact that the extensive Portland underground lesbian party scene existed primarily to keep the trannies out.

At the beginning of this season of lawfare this case was widely considered the weakest of all the cases against Trump because it's idiotic. It's so obviously partisan bullshit that Biden did not get the huge bump they were hoping for and instead Trump has raised over $200 million since the verdict and he's enjoying a huge amount of public support. They've made Donald Trump into a martyr. And the other cases are fizzling out.
And instead of being bombastic he's being very calm and said in an interview today that his lawyers shouldn't plead that he not be jailed and just let things go forward. None of this has worked out the way they have planned.
I have no idea how this is going to play out but I don't think leftists are very happy with how this is unfolding right now.

Nowadays on a day-long road trip I buy pre-made sandwiches at grocery stores the night before. I keep them in a cooler (out of the ice) and have one for lunch, and also dinner if I will get to my destination late. Add a small bag of chips and a soda from the cooler for a meal and I save money and time.

Reason being, intelligent and knowledgeable electronic and audio engineers worked together to meld a balance of adequate electronic performance, a favorable acoustic cabinet to best project the sound from the few-steps-above-cheap speakers which then served those markets.
And, the multi-hundred pound cabinets were, of themselves, pretty damn good resonance proof audio environments, relying on their own structure for sound wave reflection and projection, and not to some random wall, sliding glass doors or set of drapes behind the array.
Immediately following the mid-century cabinets and internals, the short-lived "gold-faced" stereo era led directly to the 60's, 70s', early '80s Silver Face, mid-Fi and Hi-Fi eras. Stereo at it's best, seldom equaled, especially now.

Similar, but not the same, to the first pic. Does not have the hook (quillon?) on the blade guard. just a blunt triangular extension opposite the loop for the rifle muzzle. Markings on blade, from top down: a Crown, G R, 1907, 9----6, Wilkinson. There are crowns, "T5", and a "D" within a square on each scale of the wooden handle. The blade guard is stamped on the right edge: "5 D ^ D", where ^ is an upward-pointing arrow. Reverse side of the blade has what I assume are acceptance stamps. The sheath is leather, and has a round, not lozenge-shaped button.

Piltdown was much later, around 1912, and was also an intentional fraud, though it was never found out if it was on purpose or a joke, since most of the people blamed for it died in France in the war.
I once paid a few bucks to look at the Minnesota Ice Man at the state fair, which turned out to be a hazy figure in a block of ice in a trailer, and I was sorely disappointed by the experience

Nah. On a good turntable, you can play a 78 with a few grams tracking force. The old acoustic reproducers did weigh a lot. A good 78 RPM record, played with a good cartridge and diamond needle, has pretty good fidelity. "Hi-Fi" was a thing before 33 1/3 LP records were invented.

Danged if I didn't 0.54" of that dihydrogen monoxide falling out of the sky today. Forecast called for at most .021" (it was bouncing all around), and I had thee little bursts that added up.
The last one just popped up out of nowhere right to the west, dumped 0.15" then moved on West and got pretty big big, still going now in Union County, SC.
That was just what the doctor ordered for the garden and Miley's 'maters.

This fits with my #336, upthread.
Every era has it's "crossover" points. Tube era leading to Solid State. Solid State leading to a very few Integrated Circuits in the layout and design. I.C. leading to full digital receivers, the CD revolution, and more.
There is a LOT of the "former" eras, that needs revival, and return to the present day.
Large, Heavy, REAL transformers, for one. You want audio, you need power. Wee, tiny transformers with an array of amp-switching circuits ahead of them, might save on electrons here or there. But DO NOT match the sound quality of the dinosaur amps.

1st band I was ever in was an AC/DC/judas priest tribute band. This was back right before bon scott went carbon neutral. Malcolm was a bad ass, but really not that hard to play. You only need to know 1 trick, when you hit that chord you need to make all the strings go off at once. Usually you don't hear individual strings, the chord just appears in it's entirety. Do that and you got it made, you'll nail the sound. Scott Ian is doing exactly that if you watch, fast strum attack and get the chord to just explode at once.

Israel controls most of Gaza now. Just get some big-ass trackhoes, and dig canals from the seashore to the tunnel entrances. I think most of Gaza is pretty low-lying, so the canals might be dozens, not hundreds, of feet deep. Link a canal to a shaft, and let gravity do the work.

Israel controls most of Gaza now. Just get some big-ass trackhoes, and dig canals from the seashore to the tunnel entrances. I think most of Gaza is pretty low-lying, so the canals might be dozens, not hundreds, of feet deep. Link a canal to a shaft, and let gravity do the work.

I'll have my Sansui turned up to maybe "2". The other guy will have to turn that Onkyo up to "6" to keep up. Maybe "7". And then his finals will overheat, and the fuse will blow.
"Headroom", requires a BIG transformer. Always has, always will.
JVC mastered this with their "Super A" amp switching technology. But were smart enough to keep Big ENOUGH transformers in the plan, to survive the demands of High Power Delivery. Much respect for '70s/'80s JVC pro-sumer gear.

Vacuum tube amps used big transformers, too, but they could sustain huge temporary overloads by simply heating up the plates of the output tubes, which could handle that, for a short period of time. Exceed the limits on a solid-state device, and the magic smoke gets out real quick.

I've read with amusement of experiments with double blind testing that demonstrate they are full of shit, ie can't tell the difference between some good, but not ridiculously expensive piece of equipment and some of their ridiculously expensive stuff.
They then argue that double blind testing is flawed. There is a difference, they say, you just have to know which is which beforehand.

I remember reading a good article on this a long time ago. It summed it up pretty nicely, and it goes something like this:
Everything distorts. You play some recorded source back, or amplify something live, whatever. You're gonna get some distortion. But, different equipment distorts differently.
It went out about vacuum tube vs modern solid state amplifiers. They distort differently.
So, which sounds better amounts to which distortion you like better. :-)
There was a bit about how some people actually prefer some distortion over the real thing. Something sounds better to them when it has a certain distortion.

The Audio Freaks aren't so much 'wrong' as they're INSANE!
You want "accuracy" in your system. Staging, separation, voice, imaging, production/reproduction.
The violinist playing into the mic, needs to be as close to the EXACT SAME violinist you hear through your speakers. Same for vocalists, etc.
But, yeah. LOUD is thing, too. See above. My Sansui at "2", vs. the modern Onkyo at "6" or "7".
And it'll BLOW YOUR WINDOWS OUT by time you turn it to "5". IF, that is, the speakers can hold out that long!

If you search on "people like distortion" that can get you started on this.
Anyway, in that article I mentioned, the author was a audio engineer. Imagine his task. You want to faithfully reproduce "live sound" as best you can. You set up the system to do that as best you can. As little distortion to get a sound field as best to the real thing as you can.
Define that as follows. Imagine someone playing a real guitar in your living room. Now, you want to set up your audio equipment so that it sounds just like that real guitar being played in your living room.
This guy does that with expensive equipment, as best he can. Objectively, per his instruments, he's got in the best he can do.
The customer then hears it, and yells, "That sounds awful!". So, he learns he has to distort things to the customer's preference. And different people have different preferences.

What you've done, is to have bought Good Enough audio gear at the lower/mid range of the Pro-Sumer market, and have paid attention to the TUNING capabilities it gave you, and tweaked it to fit the Sound Stage of YOUR environment.
Which is far more than the 98% of "plug and play" audio IDIOTS do, and then complain about muddy and indistinct sound.

My current boxes do all that remarkably well. My experience says having a well recorded and mastered recording, be that a direct to disk or high quality FLAC is far more important than gear for us mortals. If your hobby is gear, well, yeah, that stuff can be pretty great.

A great test for what your gear can do and how a recording affects all that is to get your mitts on a high quality recording and a Spotify version of a popping jazz track, combo or big band. Then pay very close to the ride cymbal and the attack/decay on the upright bass. Buddy Rich comes to mind here as a useful place to begin. Yeah, it is a live altering moment that cannot be undone.

I had more than two of those. There is a level beyond that where the band played live and brass master was cut while playing. Those would be the direct to disc recordings. I had more than three of those and they were absolutely mind blowing, especially after growing up listening to AM radio. The best late analog period recordings have never been exceeded in my opinion.
