20 Sort of willowed:

There is a four hour utube video by Jenny Nicholson, about her trip to the now defunct DEIsney Galactic Starcruiser hotel. She paid $6066 for a two night stay for the experience, and explains the incredible suck of it.

She has a slightly annoying high pitched voice. The bullshittiness of it is interesting. As a small bonus, her average looking friend appears to have a nice rack, but sadly, I have seen little of her in the first hour.

This video is making the rounds right now, and has over six million views. At least she can get some of her money back via Google ads.

I just heard about it tonight when Valiant Renegade mentioned it. It came out a week ago or so, and it is causing a stir in the financial news, because these financial reporters are imbeciles and are finally starting to wake up to the shittiness that has been DEIsney for the last number of years.

It takes a youtoober, be it something niche, like this, to an investigative type guy, like turtleboy, to shake things up and deliver real news.

May is almost over. Damn, it flew by. The past few days we've had some very nice weather. Dry air blew in from the north, and dew points have been down right 50F and even below, with temps in the mid-70s today.

Tonight, forecast low is 51F, and I usually run a couple or three degrees below, so it might actually dip into the 40s for the first day of June.

Now, I'm not saying that I couldn't have been suckered into paying for a similar experience at Hogwarts, but for 6,000 dollars, it needs to be a real castle, with real props, a real sorting into my house, and real robes in proper colors that I get to take home, a wand that chooses me, that is unique to me, interaction with cast members, and I damn sure better get a few Potions classes with Snape. When Alan Rickman was alive. I would have paid for that, and extra for detention with him.

Disney missed a huge opportunity there. People were willing to pay for it, and Disney should've blown them away, but they blew it instead!

Brave and Bing both tell me it was the P-80 Shooting Star, which is about what I expect from search engines these days. My limited research led me to the Boeing Model 15, which was based off of from studies of the Fokker DVII, but that first flew in 1923, which seems pretty late.

It's 11:53 and temp is 54.3F and falling. Yep, it's a good bet the low will be below 50F early this morning.

The record low for June 1 at GSP is 40F, set in 1972. That's also the record low for the month of June. We won't touch that. And good thing. Miley's maters wouldn't like that one little bit.

As I type, temp hit 54.1F. That's equal to the low early morning today.

261 “If the prosecutor is obliged to choose his cases, it follows that he can choose his defendants. Therein is the most dangerous power of the prosecutor: that he will pick people that he thinks he should get, rather than pick cases that need to be prosecuted. With the law books filled with a great assortment of crimes, a prosecutor stands a fair chance of finding at least a technical violation of some act on the part of almost anyone. In such a case, it is not a question of discovering the commission of a crime and then looking for the man who has committed it, it is a question of picking the man and then searching the law books, or putting investigators to work, to pin some offense on him. It is in this realm-in which the prosecutor picks some person whom he dislikes or desires to embarrass, or selects some group of unpopular persons and then looks for an offense, that the greatest danger of abuse of prosecuting power lies. It is here that law enforcement becomes personal, and the real crime becomes that of being unpopular with the predominant or governing group, being attached to the wrong political views, or being personally obnoxious to or in the way of the prosecutor himself.”

Search the "Crosley Icy Ball". It is a batch-cycle ammonia absortion refrigerator that can keep an icebox cool for up to 24 hours. And can make ice! It is a practical do-it-yourself project, and might be useful for a prepper. To regenerate it, you heat the "hot side" ball with a small burner, and chill the cold ball with cold water. It contains anhydrous ammonia and water, and has no moving parts.

Pretty well all absorption fridges use anhydrous ammonia as the refrigerant. It's cheap, and thermodynamically efficient. And it's a closed cycle, all the gases are in a network of hermetically-sealed steel pipes and vessels.

I remember seeing a kerosene powered fridge that worked just fine. Servel cycle, powered by an oil lamp under the column. I think the user had to brush soot away from time to time. It was kept on the covered porch of the owner's cabin.

The tragedy that inspired Einstein and Szilard to develop their refrigerator design was caused by a gas-burning Euro fridge (maybe Electrolux?) that had a burner problem, and burned too rich, emitting carbon monoxide into the room as a result. And, given the era, probably ran on "producer gas" which contained plenty of CO from the get-go. You will note that all RV fridges now have their gas burner vented to the exterior of the RV.

It not being a true rectangle, I can only estimate its size (within the double electric deer fence). Maybe 110' x 170'

You should see it, Miklos. We got a late start this year so it's still like a blank canvas (in that the seeds are underground and nothing's up yet). But it's all flagged and measured in a mildly OCD way. No mulch cloth between rows yet, except in the tomato section.

I'm trying to remember what I knew about N fertilizer and how plants use it. You've got two forms, Ammoniacal, NH4+ ion, and Nitrate, NH4-NO3.

Now, plants can only use N in nitrate form. The ammonium form has to be converted to nitrate, and soil bacteria do that job.

You've got Urea, 46-0-0, as well. That's complicated, but it's Ammoniacal at first.

Say "ammoniacal". The sophisticated way is "amun-nye-ical". The redneck way is a-MOAN-ee-acal".

Liquid nitrogen, what we used to us on grain and side dressing of corn, is UAN solution, about 32-0-0, a mixture of Urea and Ammonium Nitrate in aqueous solution. It was the easiest and most economical for us to use.

I remember reruns of 'Hee Haw'

America had enough hot rural young women for a ton of shows...

419 Hee Haw was (and is, because still in syndication) a remarkable cultural exemplar.

Highly popular among the stereotyped hillbillies and rednecks.

Who got the jokes, because they were on us, and among us.

I am not aware of any group in America so ready to laugh at they own selfs.

It was required viewing in my redneck residence when I was a young'un. Lots of delightful looking young ladies in daisy dukes and some incredible musical talent, especially Roy Clark.

It surprised me years later when I learned a lot of the cast had actually been recruited from the Beatnik movement. Lulu did an amazing interview on that aspect of the show a few years back.

It's still blurry that way, though. Although that's what I did.

TinEye didn't find a better version anywhere else.

It says it came from "Business Insider," but the article I saw there doesn't have a map. And it's from 2018. And it has a few differences. Like Kentucky being "the happy birthday song."

"Happy Birthday" more famous than bourbon? Pshaw.

Also, a song isn't an invention.

423 I sowed tomatoes on May 3, and I'm setting them out this weekend. I've got 12 Rutgers 250, 21 San Marzanos, 15 Terra Cottas and 1 Kentucky Beefsteak (I found a seed stuck in the bottom of the packet, and it grew). Also 3 Spoons and 8 little Tiny Tim cherries, but they won't be in the garden.

I harvested my first tomato haul of the year today. The plats are going crazy, several of them are taller than I am, in the storms yesterday they overturned their cages and I had to drive stakes to get them back upright, tomorrow I have to drive taller stakes to tie the top branches to.

True indeed - and willing to self-parody. One of my professors at Ole Miss was driving across the US/Canadian border when that was an easier matter, and the Canadian border authorities asked "Are you an American, sir?"

He deadpanned "Hell no. I'm from Mississippi!" And they waved him through.

Same guy published a journal article with ample anecdotal evidence of the astonishing willingness of non-Southerners to believe anything Southerners told them, no matter how absurd, so long as it played into their preconceived stereotype of the South.

Back in the Seventies, WTVA (Tupelo) news had a meteorologist who frequently did rain dances and snow dances as part of his forecasts. From those days when folks with his job were just known as Weather Men and it was a given that they were required to inject some comedy and a lighter touch,

Fellow went on to become one of the first meteorologists to sign on with the Weather Channel when it was just getting started.

They was both farmers. Mr. Andy had a mouth on him They joked that when he died, "Cannon" (the local funeral home in Ft. Inn, SC) would have to wire his jaw shut to shut him up even then.

Well, he died. I asked his son, at the Receiving of Friends, if they did indeed wire his jaw shut. You might think that was "inappropriate", but the son knew the spirit, and LOL'd. "No, they thought they might, but quieted up there at the last".

Now, Mr. Andy had some instructions for what was to be done when he departed this here mortal coil, what you call it.

First, he was to be buried in a pair of overalls. And the casket was to be a pine box.

That was carried out faithfully. I saw Mr. Andy in his overalls, as I always knew him lying in state. They was brand new, Sunday-go-to-Meetin' overalls, but overalls they were.

Now, at his funeral, he had a guitar picker and a banjo picker a-playin'. Now, they weren't Roy Clark or Buck Trent level, but they were good enough. And yes, they tore it up a time or two, with some real foot-tappin' tunes there at the service.

That was how Mr. Andy wanted to be escorted off this mortal coil. And it was faithfully executed per his wishes. Mr. Andy (pbuh).

I'm sure he and my Daddy are up there having a Big Time now.

I miss general stores and their ambience. The nearest to where I lived had an established set of customs. Coming in to buy something didn't mean you would leave quickly. There was conversation to be had, and you turned up a wooden Coke crate and balanced on it. Dining often occurred - either a Red Neck Cocktail (a bottle of Coke with salted peanuts mixed in with it) or crackers and sardines. Occasionally someone would buy vanilla extract with a wink and a nod (Dry county). There was a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere that I haven't seen many places since then.

Oh, yes, they were definitely drinking it. Country store merchants made a sizable part of their sales from it. Folks that might have some moral qualms about dealing with a bootlegger wouldn't hesitate to buy a legal alternative.

The local Shine was not highly regarded - the distillers cut corners, and ended up with contaminated products. In one case I heard, a possum had crawled in and died in the apparatus, and a lot of mason jars full had been made and sold before the Moonshiners found out.

The best Shine, bar none, that I ever drank came from North Carolina - Mississippi just wasn't in their league. If you were willing to deal with the Stateline Mob (see the story of Buford Pusser for reference) you could buy the regular conventional liquor, but that was like dealing with a red neck version of the Mafia, with all of the bad and none of the good.

I have had a shot of vanilla. I doubt 99% of the people out there today could say that. Most people can’t stomach Fernet Branca. They called that the bartender shot because bad ass bartenders will drink it while most won’t. Heh, that is cool aid. Try a shot of bitters, that will make Fernet seem like nothing.

The thing about vanilla extract is even though it is 70% alcohol. It is by law considered non-potable. People with snap benefits can buy it as a food item and I don’t think anyone IDs you though I wouldn’t know because I’m old. The pint is even our government says it’s not an alcoholic beverage. It is a food item, And booze and 99% of the booze you find at the liquor store. But I doubt many people in this day and age drink it, though I know some do as you say.
