Last Breath
Jozef Israels

Israels paints a powerful painting about grief and peppers the scene with symbolic imagery of sudden death and a life cut short before its time. The painting is divided into two halves. On the left is the deathbed and a mourning relative — a mother or wife. It’s difficult to determine her age. The age or sex of the deceased is also uncertain. According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the figure is male but doesn’t say what his relationship is to this family. I’ll just refer to him here as “the man”. Anyway, he looks old enough to work and is most likely the breadwinner of the family. Looking around at the state of the room, this family was not well off. This painting shows a great tragedy and implies a depressing future.

The younger woman (the mourner) has been reading as the man lies on his sickbed. This seems like a vigil. When the man finally dies, the mother rose from her chair and calmly lays her head on the corpse. Notice how the book was laid gently down onto the chair. It wasn’t flung out of her lap. It’s still open. I think she expected him to die, that he had been ill for a while, and he finally took the titular last breath. She reacts, but in a way that won’t scare the children.

The older woman seems to be the main caretaker for the children. Notice how they gather around her, not their mother. To me, this is another sign that the man has been sick for some time. The older woman, maybe a grandmother, has taken on childrearing as the mother tends to the man. The mother sobs but she muffles them to protect the children. Notice how they aren’t crying. Children tend to pick up on cues from the adults. Here, they are quiet and concerned. One sucks its thumb. The other was playing on the floor but left its toys quickly. They are very young and don’t understand what happened. Something made their mother very sad however, so they draw close to the older woman.

I like how the lighting is used here. The sun is shining through the window and lights up the man’s dead, pale face. It also shines on the mother, and the grandmother and children. Israels is highlighting the range of human drama — the tragedy and those that will be affected by it. In the dim light I can also make out objects that symbolize life and mortality. On the left is a clock and an unlit lantern. Clocks and other timekeeping pieces have symbolized the passage of time since ancient times. An unlit lantern can mean that a light has been extinguished. Another unlit candle sits on the right near the window. The book the woman was reading might be a Bible. If you zoom into the painting, one of the pages seems to have a picture of a saint – you can make out the halo around the head. She was finding comfort in The Bible and may be reading to the man as he died.

A dog lies in the bottom center of the painting in shadow near the man’s feet and looks so sad. The internet is full of photographs of dogs at their masters’ funerals and almost every one of them looks just like this. It’s heartbreaking. It too reacts to the death. This dog may also be symbolic. Since ancient times, dogs have symbolized loyalty and their devotion to their humans is cliché. Israels could have included it to represent the love, loyalty, and fidelity within this family unit. They are not well-off, but they had each other. Now one of them is gone.

For me, the dog represents the true emotional weight of this scene. The mother weeps but she is trying to protect the children. The grandmother’s emotions are also subdued for the same reason. The children react to the adults’ emotions, sure, but they cannot fully grasp what is happening so aren’t really doing anything. The dog, however, has no such concerns or responsibilities. Like those dogs from the internet, it stays by its master’s side as the very image of loyalty. It is the Greek chorus for this work, displaying and amplifying pure, raw grief.

Yours is a fascinating explication (if that's the right word) of this painting. My initial reaction was, "Damn, that's dark and dirty. No wonder Hobbes referred to early human existence as 'nasty, brutish, and short.'" But there is much more to this artwork than that.

They found tales of suffering and courage in poor communities that seemed to have escaped the artifices of the modern world. Jozef Israëls set an international example with his emotional depiction of the cycle of work and death in the villages of Holland. With fishing nets and a Bible nearby, a woman throws herself over the pale body of a man in a traditional Dutch bed; an older woman tends two children too small to understand the misfortune that has befallen the family.

36 Okay, Izraels was Dutch, and he lived into the twentieth century. This was painted in 1872, late Victorian era, not the 18th century as I'd supposed.

Seems like a lot of his paintings were dark, indoor studies, but not all of them.

On the bright side, today is my Aunt Maxine's 97th birthday. She still lives alone in the house she and my uncle bought in 1954. She gets around with a walker, reads and embroiders every day and would be outside working in the yard if her daughter would let her. Her family and extended family, like me, are blessed beyond measure to have her in our lives.

Kris, that is a wonderful precis of the painting. The clock at first seemed incongruous against the poverty in the room until I considered the idea of time as a symbol.

The idea of generations struck me. The children who are too young to understand death and its consequences to the family. The young wife in mourning and distress at the loss of the husband. Then the stoic older woman who has no doubt seen this before and must protect the children at that moment. The sunlight illuminating the grandmother's figure might indicate she will be the one to guide the others through the loss.

An incredibly powerful painting.

The House apparently passed something without any Democrat votes. It seems to be in flux, but there was also some report yesterday that Democrats were just going to get around it by having the Zoom call to do the official nomination before the deadline.

The GOP was fine with revising the law in the Ohio Legislature--it was the Dems. The GOP in OH in regular session tacked on an amendment banning foreign money being spent in statewide constitutional amendment referenda.

Dems were unanimous in opposing it and the bill required a 2/3rds majority for passage for some reason. Bill failed due to Dem votes.

Essentially, with the recent allegations that Tammy Baldwin Dem Senator from WI along with ActBlue had illegal contributions designed to skirt FEC law, I think it is fair to say that a lot of the money corrupting politics in the US is coming from abroad.

I think, in general, campaign money for elections should have to be from the district itself, not from unaccountable money laundering organizations.

Scotus ruled that the jury must find unanimously each element of the crime was committed by the defendant. Merchan is letting the jury pick and choose whatever predicate felony crime 'might' have been violated so that Trump can be convicted on statutory limited misdemeanors.

That includes FEC, NY State, etc. regarding illegal campaign contributions that affect elections.

Lawfare Bullshit. Merchan and any jury convicting Trump should be in prison themselves for perverting the course of justice and conspiracy to do just that along with the entire Lawfare project, the DNC honchos, Bragg, etc.

We have the financial tools to prevent that because essentially most of the money now is transferred via digital transactions. Even the famed BitCoin transaction ledgers can be breached if govt has a mind to do so and it has already demonstrated it can do so with the Silk Road prosecutions.

A college club that I had been a member of was housed in a Flemish revival brick and limestone building. It had been donated by Dr. Alan Gregg (1890-1957) who worked for 37 years at the Rockefeller Institute and developed the model for medical research and development grants. He was involved in getting the medical trials established for sulfonamide and penicillin antiobiotics. Although Dr. Fleming had discovered penicillin's antibiotic effect, it was not given to a patient until 1940 when that little girl in Connecticut, I think, was saved by it. (she passed recently). Then our industrial base started producing it in bulk just in time for the War.)

In Amsterdam, there were "hofjes" almshouses for widows. The Begijnhof in Amsterdam by Spui Square is well preserved and beautiful.
