81 I enjoy everything about the Pre-Raphaelite school of art and Hunt was a master, and founder, of it. The slightly romanticized realism, detail and brilliant colors that are vibrant but not garish. Then there is the symbolism and visual allusions to legend. It all adds up to a fascinating viewing experience. CBD has used at least two other of Hunt's works and they were just as pleasing.

Why yes, I'm a fan. Funny you should ask.

I never got the hatred for receiving useful appliances as gifts. If a woman bought me an impact drill, I'd be pretty pleased about it. Yeah, it's a gift of future labor on my part, but that's not the point. I'm going to be doing that labor anyway, just more easily and with nicer equipment.

Appliances are high-value gifts. "I appreciate what you do for me, so I'm spending a lot of money to make it easier and nicer for you to do it." Appliances are - or, I suppose, should be considered - great gifts.

110 Hmm. I guess this is OK, but I prefer his The Light of the World.

My problem with Hunt is that his colors are always too garish to my eye, but I also know that the Victorians were fond of bright and - to us - eye-piercing colors. So this is appropriate to the time. Not something I would hang, though.

Yup. Responding to persistent grumbling about bad tools with a gift of new tools strikes me as a good thing. You're paying attention, and are willing and able to solve the problem. It's thoughtful. Hurr durr, that Nate Silver's a real genius. "Kill the Jews!! Rape their wives in front of their kids, and then kill them, too!!" is not going to be a broadly popular message.

But then, none of the ruling class's positions are popular. The only places where you're going to find them to be popular are in their own institutions. And no institution will be more rigidly supportive of ruling class policy positions than the galleries where they hatch their larvae. Of course that's where this is concentrated.

167 The Birthday was the first painting by William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, to enter a public collection on the West Coast of the United States. It portrays Edith Waugh—Hunt’s second wife and the sister of his deceased first wife, Fanny—on her twenty-first birthday. With its vibrant coloring and tactile brushwork, The Birthday embodies the aesthetic forged by the Pre-Raphaelites against the grain of the more narrative approach then championed by official art institutions. As one observer noted in a review of the 1869 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where The Birthday was first exhibited, “Mr. Holman Hunt […] is ‘in’ the Academy as an exhibitor, but, for reasons best known to himself, not ‘of’ it.”

“We are not where we hoped we would be when we started this process,” he said, adding that finalizing an international agreement on how to respond to a pandemic was critical “for the sake of humanity” even as a host of countries disagreed with the basic principle that unelected, unaccountable, health bureaucrats could somehow decide major global decisions on government policies.

220 I can't find any info re. the painting but roses indicate romantic love, pearls both mourning and purity, amber -- I can't find, and I don't feel like looking about watches although would guess it is related to time before one's death.

||Unlike other gemstones, pearls were considered understated and somber, making them suitable for the subdued nature of mourning attire. The soft luster of pearls was thought to symbolize tears and the quiet sorrow of loss. This association with mourning led to an increase in the creation and wearing of pearl jewelry during periods of grieving.

Apart from their role in mourning, pearls in the Victorian era were also symbols of purity and innocence. This symbolism made them a popular choice for bridal and christening jewelry. The tradition of brides wearing pearls on their wedding day, to symbolize purity and chastity, was solidified during this era.||

In my burg minimum wage is still in single digits. But McDonalds pays $18 an hour. It wasn’t minimum wage that made a Big Mac meal $12. It all stems from the same root cause. The govt spent $5T in Covid “aid” in 2 years. You don’t need a PhD in economics to figure out what happens to prices when that happens.

I saw the oddest complaint from a lefty about housing prices recently.

She decided the reason the cost of housing is up in our area is because of AirBnB.

Now...I don't live in a tourist area. But apparently the 5 people in the area renting out houses on AirBnB are why housing is up 50%+ in the last 4 years.

ONE MORE SMALL STEP TOWARDS WASHINGTON DECIDING WHO GETS LIFESAVING MEDICAL TREATMENTS: Joe Biden’s ‘Equity Agenda’ Has a New Target: Kidney Transplants.

The Biden administration unveiled a plan that would push American hospitals to prioritize low-income patients when performing kidney transplants, a move Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra says is aimed at rooting out “racial inequities” in the “transplant process.”

The proposal, which Becerra’s agency announced on May 8, would place 90 of the nation’s 257 transplant hospitals into a pilot program that uses an annual point system to grade participants. Under the system, a successful kidney transplant counts as one point. A transplant furnished to a low-income patient, however, counts as 1.2 points thanks to a “health equity performance adjustment,” thus incentivizing the hospitals to prioritize such patients.

- When it comes to carbon sequestration and the natural world, many efforts go into planting more trees. But large land mammals also have a significant role to play.
- A new study analyzing the climate impacts of a small herd of European bison in Romania discovered that the bovine increased the surrounding grasslands’ carbon capture capacity by a factor of 10.
- This is thanks in large part to the animals’ immense bulk, as their hooves regularly compact the soil, which allows it to trap more carbon.

In 2020 they din't care about electability and they certainly didn't want a leader. They wanted someone that will say and do what he is told.

They want to change things that can’t be changed, and they want to ignore things that can be repaired, but are difficult, require effort. That’s why they focus on intentions, not results.

One adviser to major Democratic donors keeps a [long] running list of reasons Biden could lose.

All year, Democrats had been on a joyless and exhausting grind through the 2024 election. But now, nearly five months from the election, anxiety has morphed into palpable trepidation, according to more than a dozen party leaders and operatives. And the gap between what Democrats will say on TV or in print, and what they’ll text their friends, has only grown as worries have surged about Biden’s prospects.

So no one is aspiring to anything else?

The concept of class is meaningless in a country where people’s fortunes are in constant motion. But Americans want a fixed class structure like what exists in Europe.

What Is Clapter (And Why Late-night Comedians Love It)?
The Urban Dictionary defines clapter as, ” ‘joke,’ often making a political or social statement, whose purpose is to make the audience applaud and agree instead of laugh. Popular with hack comedians and their fans.”
when someone tries a joke that doesn’t have a punchline and is just them saying they don’t like Trump and they’re progressive. Congrats, you told a room full of progressive people that you share the same views as them.

The IDF has released more information from its investigation into the strike in Rafah that eliminated two senior Hamas terrorists this weekend.

The IDF did not strike within the humanitarian zone. Hamas continues to lie about it.

The strike targeted a Hamas compound more than a kilometer (more than half a mile) from the humanitarian zone. The IDF took several steps to ensure no women or children were in the Hamas compound before carrying out the strike.

The IDF also identified rocket launch pits in the vicinity of the strike.

Israeli fighter jets used two small munitions, each with a 17 kg (37 lb) warhead, in an attempt to prevent any civilian casualties.

The IDF suspects that due to the precision strike, ammunition, weapons, or some other combustible substance it was unaware was stored there caused a secondary explosion, leading to a fire that spread in an area housing displaced Gazans and killing several civilians.

Saw this on the CNN Chyron today. They have three of the Capitol policemen from J6 out on the campaign trail for him. That includes Harry Dunn.

Dunn ran for a Congressional seat in Maryland - and got beaten in the primary. Maryland. If there is any place likely to elect some J6 hoaxer who happens to be black, Howard County MD is that place. And he lost.

But Biden is still using a guy who lost in a place he couldn't possibly lose to support his campaign. They can't possibly just be this inept.
