The Saturday Night Joke

At the end of the sermon, the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express a praise for an answered prayer. Suzie stood and walked to the podium.

She said, "I have a praise. Two months ago, my husband, Frank, had a terrible bicycle accident and his scrotum was completely crushed.

"The pain was excruciating, and the doctors didn't know if they could help him."

You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Frank must have experienced.

“Frank was unable to hold me or the children," she went on, "and every move caused him terrible pain." We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Frank's scrotum and wrap fine wire around it to hold it in place with metal staples.”

Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Frank.

“Now," she announced in a quivering voice, "thank the Lord, Frank is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely.”

All the men sighed with unified relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say.

A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, "I'm Frank." The entire congregation held its breath.

“I just want to tell my wife that the word is sternum.”

Perhaps if I lived in a city and didn't commute more than a block, I might buy a used Tesla. Oh FFS who am I kidding. I don't ever plan on an EV.

The launch of a new electric vehicle these days is invariably met with a chorus of "this car is too expensive"—and rightfully so. But for used EVs, it's quite another story, particularly used Teslas, thanks to a glut of former fleet and rental cars that are now ready for their second owner.

"Due to a variety of reasons, Tesla resale values have plummeted, making many Tesla models very affordable now. Plus, for some consumers, an additional $4,000 Federal tax credit on used EVs may apply, sweetening the deal even further. Buying a used Tesla can be a great deal for the savvy shopper, but there are significant things to look out for," says Ed Kim, president and chief analyst at AutoPacific.

Indeed, a quick search on the topic easily reveals some horror stories of ex-rental Teslas, so here are some things to consider if you're in search of a cheap Model 3 or Model Y.

For more than a year, Tesla has been engaged in an EV price war, mostly driven by its attempt to maintain sales in China. Heavily cutting the price of your new cars is a good way to devalue the used ones, and Hertz's decision to sell at least 20,000 of its Teslas was in part a response to the lower residual values.

Is That A Sex Doll Inside Your Body Bag?
Cops: Funeral home worker wanted to smuggle adult items

MAY 30--Investigators charge that a funeral home worker planned to use a body bag to smuggle a life-size sex doll out of the home of a man who died in his Nebraska residence, according to court records.

Ryan Smith, 42, was arrested in October for allegedly breaking into the Omaha apartment where the deceased man lived. At the time, Smith worked for Mid America First Call, which handles “removals, transportation, embalming, cremations, and ship-outs.”

As detailed in recent court filings, Smith and a coworker were dispatched to the Rock Creek Apartments to collect the decedent’s body. Inside the unit, a sheriff’s deputy noted, “Near the body on the bed was a very real life size version of an adult female.”

57 So, my parents became very hard of hearing. And I talk loud. The cubicle people beside me were not happy. They got used to it and I toned it down,

But volume levels. I would watch 'Sherlock Holmes' with my friend. We would settle on volume level 18 of100. English show, accents, so yeah...But so loud!

In my room alone at night, main volume is set to 1, I push it up to 2 and can pretty much make out most dialogue from TBBT and other shows. New science fiction shows or kids shows I enjoy..6 or 7 out of about 50 or so.

But as I've been watching horror movies, I have to say, I like the 13% volume level with sub titles for whispering or foreign accents.

I could do a lot of work to my 2003 with $60,000.
It's been weird to watch my dead project vehicles become worth more than the sum of their parts.
I parted out a 96 Ford Ranger and still have the hulk.
4 years ago I would have given it to somebody but now when I get people offering $2000 for it I get weird.
WTF?
I've had $3000 offers on the 4runner. Which I won't turn loose.

Likewise, sirens from some blocks away, etc.

Guar-an-damn-tee-ya, the helmeted rider can have a lot more situational awareness than the non helmeted. Until, that is, the helmeted rider plonks in a set of earbuds for toonz, or such. Then he becomes a self-cancelling fool.

119 I saw a clip from that old movie The Day After on youtube and one thing I hadn't noticed before - a lot of the videos of destruction were of random farm houses out in a field.

When I saw it years ago I didn't really think about it but...in the event of WWIII back in the 80s that wouldn't have been that common.

The Soviets had nukes aimed at our cities, military, and economic targets.

So unless Farmer Jones was unlikely enough to live near one of those target types he was likely fine (well, in the immediate term). I'm guess they were able to get clips like that from past nuclear tests though to use in their movie and outside of the two, uh, tests in Japan there wouldn't be video of nukes hitting a city.

It’s not a “one and done” thing.

I had dry needling done alongside regular acupuncture.

I’d like to say it accelerated the healing process. It certainly didn’t hurt things …

226 This is turning out to be one of THOSE years. Mom had a big stroke on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, and passed two days ago, in her sleep. Best outcome possible, since it prevented my sisters from having hospice morphine her to death. She's with Dad now, wherever he ended up, and I don't think it is a very nice place, but they are together, so there's that.

Kicked the boy out of the house today, moved his crap to a storage locker, and he was about as gracious about that as you can imagine. It isn't easy having a psychopath for a son.

We are cleaning out this house to sell it, and moving out of Anchorage, probably to Sutton, which is tiny and distant. Anchorage just elected a flaming liberal for Mayor, to go with the flaming fag liberals on the Assembly. There are addicts living on the street everywhere who have better winter gear than I do, and those assembly asshats are making bank off them. They have ruined my city. I'm leaving.

I'm not working as an architect any more because my boss was a spineless wimp and his boss was an ignorant bully who made it impossible for me to work ethically in that position, so now I'm learning to be a "Cost Engineer," which means...

It really does piss me off to no end this whole reparations crap. Slavery has been a part of humanity since before the historical record, that is writing. It's hard to think of one people throughout history that hasn't either been enslaved or slavers, or both, at some point in time. To think otherwise is to deny the very nature of humanity that allowed survival. Survival way back then wasn't pretty: It was nasty, brutal and short. Not condoning slavery, by any means, it's just the way it was. But why have people dealt with that historical past up until now? I hate all this historical presentism passing itself off as intellectual rigor. Presentism is just historical garbage wrapped up in pretty woke 'we are superior to those dead white cretins' quotes. Enough.

Rant off.

Is "scrotum" really Latin? Merriam-Webster says the etymology is from the Latin word "scrautum," meaning "quiver."

"Quiver" as in "a bag for arrows," not as in "vibrating," presumably.

Which makes me wonder how ancient Latin-speakers knew how sperms worked and what they looked like. Arrows? Kinda.

It is, but I was wrong earlier. The plural IS 'scrota'.

As for Merriam-Webster, they are partially correct. Here is a good explanation for that: "from Latin scrotum, which probably is transposed from scortum 'a skin, hide' (see corium), perhaps by influence of scrautum 'leather quiver for arrows'."

Seems like some "misspeak", or maybe a sexual pun what with the testes being that leathery hide that holds the arrows that come shooting out (the Romans were pretty coarse/explicit, language-wise, with a lot of sexual innuendo/puns), and became a part of the language. Who knows? We don't know how the language is truly spoken even today. It's dead, Jim.

Around that time they had another great series, 'Sherlock Holmes', with Jeremy Brett. Not only in my estimation but some critics as well, that portrayal was the definitive Sherlock Holmes. A truly superb interpretation of Doyle's character. Just as David Suchet's portrayal of Hercule Poirot was spot on, 'definitive' if you will of Agatha Christie's character.

I loved both of those shows. Throw in some 'Inspector Morse' (John Thaw) and I'm good for hours.

Was that the one with Michael Gambon, or the Rowan Atkinson one (which, although I was a huge Blackadder fan I didn't think I'd like, but did)? I know Rupert Davies did a series in the early Sixties that Simenon really liked.

Posted by: John Drake Nearing the Caspian Sea at June 02, 2024 03:19 AM (u/Zei)

406 Sorry, senior moment there with Magritte stuck in my poor excuse for a brain. You're talking about David Suchet's Poirot, right? Because he was awesome. The only other actor that I thought came close was Albert Finney in Murder on the Orient Express.

Posted by: John Drake Nearing the Caspian Sea at June 02, 2024 03:23 AM (u/Zei)

407 I think you don't have to excuse your brain, Mr Drake. It seems extremely well functioning aside from senior moments that people above a certain age who don't have dementia, I mean , and yes, I was speaking of David Suchet's performsnce.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 02, 2024 03:31 AM (G+cIq)

408 Further senior moment - that should have been "Maigret," of course. Somewhere in the Great Beyond René Magritte is saying "Encore? Merde..."

Mrs. Drake has helpfully slapped me on the back of the head Jethro Gibbs-style and maybe my system will reboot.

Hearty ditto on Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, by the way, and John Thaw's Inspector (Endeavour) Morse. Kevin Whatley's Detective Sergeant Lewis was great as well.

Posted by: John Drake Nearing the Caspian Sea at June 02, 2024 03:31 AM (u/Zei)

409 Rowan Atkinson was Black Adder. Michael Gambon Was Georges Simenon's 'Inspector Maigret', also a fine portrayal of a novel's character.

Some of those actors broke into Hollywood from those roles, including the actor who played 'Hastings' in the Poirot series and Michael Gambon. It was like a quick invasion where that group (less Jeremy Brett) were in a lot of movies. Then POOF!

I'm seeing that out again with Ioan Gruffudd (who was 'Horatio Hornblower' in a few A & E movies where he was really good and was in the 'The Fantastic' 4 movies) and Benedict Cumberbatch, though I find him less talented. They were striking while the iron was hot, or were, until white guys, even with British accents, don't cut it.

That's a good point - in many ways that character was a throwback to the Edwardian era to the early Thirties when Chesterton was crafting the tales, and provided a sort of anchor for the narrative. I didn't think they did a good job with Flambeau - making him Father Brown's nemesis misses the point of who Flambeau formerly was and whom (with the good Father's help) he eventually became.
