Solar storms are simply no longer a threat
Today’s Chicken Little Report: When NOAA predicted on May 9, 2024 that a powerful solar flare had erupted from the Sun and was aiming a major solar storm directly at the Earth, the scientists at the federal government’s Space Weather Prediction Center could not help underlining the disaster potential, and were ably aided by the mainstream press. This CNN report was typical: “Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations,” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. “(The center) has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.” The center has notified operators in these areas to take action to mitigate the potential for any impacts, which include the possibility of increased and more frequent voltage control problems. Other aspects operators will monitor include a chance of anomalies or impacts to satellite operations and frequent or longer periods of GPS degradation.

Buildings where EPA partially leases space and such space includes restroom facilities exclusively for EPA use.
These policies do not apply to facilities that are not controlled exclusively by the federal government or EPA. Employees who believe they have been discriminated against, including harassment based on their gender identity or transgender status, have a right to file an EEO complaint with the Office of Civil Rights. That was way before AI image generation even existed let alone reached the level it has now. I won't be surprised if the issue is relitigated now that it has.

I never did find out when we were working on becoming foster-to-adopt parents if the "90% of foster care girls have experienced sexual abuse" was through the system or outside the system and therefore the reason for removal. I will tell you one thing, though-states are making it harder for kids to make clean breaks from clearly abusive parents and be adopted into loving families. No therapist in this area had ever seen that document before, and the office's legal counsel advised against signing it. We didn't want them held liable either, so we dropped our foster care application. I would argue that since actual socialism in practice is almost always an oligarchy (just with different oligarchs in charge) probably the purest form on paper would be Cambodia. Early Soviet period- which required the NEP period to actually finance the revolution (which is just sweet.)
It never actually IS the communal rule that they say they want. It is just top down micromanagement, not organic rule by everyone.
I have seen it argued that the Kibbutz model is actually the biggest scale, successful implementation of the principle (which is also kind of bitterly ironic) but I have not studied it myself enough to really say one way or another.

6000 foot descent in 5 minutes is not an extreme drop. That's 1200 feet per minute, or 20 feet per second. I'm guessing there was one Hell of an air pocket, and the aircraft dropped a lot faster than that for a very short period.

Some in the Santa Cruz coastal mountains were into selling handicrafts and had small shops along Hwy 9. I recall a few that sold very fine carvings and inlaid jewelry boxes to massive empire styled dressers with drawer fronts fashioned from redwood burls.

When you get a Carrington, you get spectacular aurora visible at the equator.

Think of accelerations and forces with your scaling factors, and the physical constants.

The other night when we saw aurora down here in South Carolackey, I found this aurora 30 minute forecast thing NOAA runs.
He showed that to some of his buddies, and then regretted it because he had to explain why it wasn't the NWS that did that. They think it's "weather", so the NWS should do.
Then he recalled when he was working in some offices near earthquake territory, how they'd get swamped with calls about the earthquakes.
"No, ma'am, we do meteorology, not geology here. Call the USGS, not us."

The oldest son Alfred fought in the CW, my ancestor Thomas stayed home to farm and care for his widowed mother and siblings. Alfred did get to come home after serving just to die of illness in 1862 contracted in the service.

I'm ok. Too much work, not enough free time. Dealing with some chronic pain stuff, but still, life is good!
My little Hailey is also almost 3. Still able to do "Grandma Day" on Thursdays. Thankful for that
